    Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

    In Genesis 37 we meet Joseph, one of the twelve sons of Jacob. His story dominates the balance of the book, all the way to the end of chapter 50. He first appears as an immature boy of seventeen, but soon enough he finds himself in the trouble of his life as his family situation quickly deteriorates under the awful weight of jealously and hatred. Like Abraham, Joseph is one of the central figures in the Biblical story of redemption. Embedded within the historic details of his life we find glimpses of God’s way of salvation, which culminates in the appearance of His only-begotten Son.

    On Sunday, we will begin our journey through Joseph’s life and times. Our sermon text will be Genesis 37:1-36. If you’re not familiar with this section of Genesis, let me encourage you to read his entire story from Genesis 37:1 to 50:26. And as you read, look for the four key themes of divine providence, suffering before glory, reconciliation, and God’s perfect faithfulness.

    I love you all so dearly, and I look forward to our fellowship and worship together on the Lord’s Day!

    In His abundant grace,

    Mike

    Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

    Over the last several Sundays we have been tracing the story of Abraham from the pages of the Book of Genesis. One of the most dramatic episodes in his life is recorded in Genesis 22 where, under direct orders from the Lord, Abraham journeyed to the land of Moriah and offered his only son as a sacrifice. However, a strange thing happened in the very course of the sacrifice. The angel of the Lord stopped the patriarch in his tracks, and God provided a substitute sacrifice in the form of a ram.

    This incredible episode is taken up in the New Testament and used in two marvelous ways. First, it presents us with a picture of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, whom God the Father provided as the perfect sacrifice for our sins. And then, the obedience of Abraham, born out of a heart of faith and trust in the promise of God, is set forth as an example of what saving faith does. Abraham, then, is the prime example of how God freely justifies sinners apart from their works solely upon the basis of Christ’s imputed righteousness. But, he is also an example of how the same faith in Christ that freely justifies the sinner also bears spiritual fruit–the fruit of love and obedience.

    As you prepare for this coming Lord’s Day worship and the proclamation of God’s Word, take time to read Genesis 22:1-18, and then reflect upon Hebrews 11:8-12, 17-19 and James 2:14-24.

    May our Lord bless you this weekend, and I can’t wait to see you all on Sunday morning!

    In His wonderful grace,

    Mike

    Confession of Faith: The Westminster Shorter Catechism

    Q. 33. What is Justification?
    A. Justification is an act of God’s free grace in which he pardons all our sins and accepts us as righteous in his sight for the sake of the righteousness of Christ alone, which is credited to us and received by faith alone.

    Yet God, my God, forgets me not
    And he is safe, and must succeed, for whom the Lord is sure to plead

    Friend of the friendless and the faint, where should I lodge my deep complaint?

    Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

    One of the most amazing stories in all of the Old Testament is the account of the sacrifice of Isaac by his father Abraham. Genesis 22:1-14 records the drama that unfolded on Mount Moriah, the eventual site of Solomon’s temple in the city of Jerusalem.   In response to an unthinkable command from the Lord, Abraham made preparations to offer his own son, the son of the covenant promise, as a burnt offering to the sovereign God who had saved and called him as the father of a new nation. The Lord instructed the patriarch to destroy the very one in whom the promises of Genesis 12 would be fulfilled. Certainly this made no sense at all, and yet at every point Abraham offered unhesitating obedience. Of course, in the end, the God whose very name is ‘Yahweh our Provider’ supplied another sacrifice. A ram strangely caught in a nearby thicket would take the place of Isaac and set the stage for the appearance of another Substitute, the very Lamb of God whose death 2000 years later would take away the sins of the world.

    On Sunday we will explore this incredible passage of Holy Scripture in the morning sermon. As you prepare for Lord’s Day worship, you’ll benefit from reading Hebrews 11:17-19 and James 2:21-24 along with Genesis 22:1-14.

    And thank you again for your faithful prayers for the proclamation of God’s Word. May our Lord bless you all and I’ll see you Sunday morning!

    All my love and prayers,

    Mike

    Song: How Deep the Father’s Love For Us CCLI# 1558110

    How deep the Father’s love for us, how vast beyond all measure,
    That He should give His only Son to make a wretch His treasure.
    How great the pain of searing loss – the Father turns His face away,
    As wounds which mar the Chosen One bring many sons to glory.

    Behold the man upon a cross, my sin upon His shoulders;
    Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice, call out among the scoffers.
    It was my sin that held Him there until it was accomplished;
    His dying breath has brought me life – I know that it is finished.
    I will not boast in anything, no gifts, no power, no wisdom;
    But I will boast in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection.
    Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer;
    But this I know with all my heart – His wounds have paid my ransom.

    Song of Response: Abide With Me CCLI# 43190

    Abide with me: fast falls the eventide; the darkness deepens, Lord with me abide
    When other helpers fail and comforts flee, help of the helpless, abide with me.

    Thou on my head in early youth didst smile; And though rebellious, and perverse meanwhile
    Thou hast not left me, though I oft left thee, On to the close, Lord, abide with me.

    I need Thy presence every passing hour; what but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s pow’r?
    Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, abide with me.

    I fear no foe with Thee at hand to bless; ills have no weight, tears lose their bitterness
    Where is thy sting death? Where grave thy victory? I triumph still, abide with me

    Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes; shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies
    Heav’n’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee; in life in death, abide with me.

  • Sermon Preview – February 6 2015

    Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

    In the sixteenth century the Protestant Reformers identified and defended (often at the cost their lives) what they referred to as ‘the article of a standing or falling Church.’ By this they meant that one doctrine or Biblical truth that served as the very foundation for the Church, and without which the Church would all but cease to exist. That one doctrine is ‘justification,’ or, as the Reformers further articulated it, the justification of the sinner by grace alone, through faith alone, in the work of Christ alone, to the glory of God alone. This grand phrase is nothing less than the Gospel itself, and without a robust commitment to its proclamation the Church ceases to be faithful to the Savior and His Kingdom.

    I suspect that when most of us reflect on the doctrine of justification we naturally think of the New Testament, and especially the way Paul so powerfully expresses it. Yet, this most essential truth actually surfaces about 2000 years before Christ was born. We initially discover it in the words of Genesis 15:6–“Then he believed in the Lord; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness.” In this verse the “he” of course is Abraham, and we learn here that this former idolater from “Ur of the Chaldeans” placed his faith (which was itself a gift from God) in the Lord.  And this act of faith was “reckoned” or counted to Abraham “as righteousness.” Here, then, is the Gospel in one blessed verse from the Old Testament!

    On Sunday we will once again examine this most important passage of Scripture and we will trace how this doctrine of justification flows from the life of Abraham up to the life and ministry of Jesus. Take some time this weekend to read Genesis 15:1-6 along with Romans 3:21-31 and 4:1-5.

    I love you all, and can’t wait to see you on Sunday morning!

    In His grace,

    Mike

    Song: By Thy Mercy

    Jesus, Lord of life and glory, Bend from Heav’n Thy gracious ear;
    While our waiting souls adore Thee, Friend of helpless sinners, hear:

    Chorus: By Thy mercy, O deliver us, good Lord.
    By Thy mercy, O deliver us, good Lord, good Lord.

    From the depth of nature’s blindness, From the hardening power of sin,
    From all malice and unkindness, From the pride that lurks within:

    When the world around is smiling, In the time of wealth and ease,
    Earthly joys our hearts beguiling, In the day of health and peace,

    In the solemn hour of dying, In the awful judgment day,
    May our souls, on Thee relying, Find Thee still our Rock and Stay:

    Song: The Church’s One Foundation Hymn 347 (v.1,2,5,6)

    Confession of Faith: The Westminster Confession of Faith
    Of Christ the Mediator, Chapter VIII/I Trinity Hymnal p. 853

    God was pleased, in his eternal purpose, to choose and ordain the Lord Jesus, his only begotten Son, to be the mediator between God and man. As the mediator, he is the prophet, priest, and king, the Head and Savior of the church, the heir of all things, and the judge of the world. God gave to him, from all eternity, a people to be his seed and to be by him, in time, redeemed, called, justified, sanctified, and glorified.

    New Testament Lesson: Mark 1:14-20

    Song of Response: Have Thine Own Way Hymn No. 688 (v. 1-4)

    Scripture Reading and Prayer for the Church:
    Galatians 4

    Preaching of the Word: Dr. Michael Calvert, Teaching Elder
    Genesis 12:1-4; 15:1-6 “The Covenant With Abraham–Part Three”

    Corporate Prayer of Confession:

    Merciful Lord, we confess that with us there is an abundance of sin, but in you there is the fullness of righteousness and abundance of mercy. We are spiritually poor, but you are rich and in Jesus Christ came to be merciful to the poor. Strengthen our faith and trust in you. We are empty vessels that need to be filled; fill us. We are weak in faith; strengthen us. We are cold in love; warm us, and make our hearts fervent for you that our love may go out to one another and to our neighbors. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

    Communion*:

    Song: Be Unto Your Name CCLI# 2177476

    We are a moment, You are forever, Lord of the Ages, God before time
    We are a vapor, You are eternal, Love everlasting, reigning on high

    Holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Worthy is the lamb who was slain
    Highest praises, honor and glory, Be unto Your name, be unto Your name

    We are the broken, You are the healer, Jesus, Redeemer, mighty to save
    You are the love song we’ll sing forever, Bowing before You, blessing Your name

    Benediction:
    *Professing and baptized members in good standing of a Church in which Jesus Christ is proclaimed as Lord and Savior are warmly invited to join with us in the celebration of the Lord’s Supper.
