    May 31, 2015

Call to Worship: Dr. Michael Calvert, Teaching Elder
    Psalm 29:1-4,11

Pastor: Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
People: Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.
Pastor: The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over many waters.
People: The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
Pastor: May the Lord give strength to his people!
All: May the Lord bless his people with peace!

    Prayer of Adoration:

    Old Testament Lesson: Isaiah 6:1-8

Confession of Faith: The Heidelberg Catechism

Q 32: Why are you called a Christian?

A: Because I am a member of Christ by faith and thus share in His anointing, so that I may as prophet confess His Name, as priest present myself a living sacrifice of thankfulness to Him, and as king fight with a free and good conscience against sin and the devil in this life, and hereafter reign with Him eternally over all creatures.

Song: Praise to the Lord, the Almighty Hymn No. 53

Song: Before the Throne CCLI# 2306412

Before the throne of God above, I have a strong and perfect plea
A great High Priest whose name is love, who ever lives and pleads for me
My name is graven on His hands, my name is written on His heart
I know that while in heav’n He stands, no tongue can bid me thence depart
No tongue can bid me thence depart

When Satan tempts me to despair, and tells me of the guilt within
Upward I look and see Him there, who made an end of all my sin
Because the sinless Savior died, my sinful soul is counted free
For God the Just is satisfied, to look on Him and pardon me
To look on Him and pardon me

Behold Him there, the risen Lamb, my perfect, spotless Righteousness
The great unchangeable I AM, the King of glory and of grace
One with Himself, I cannot die, my soul is purchased by His blood
My life is hid with Christ on high, with Christ my Savior and my God
With Christ my Savior and my God

    New Testament Lesson: John 3:1-8

Song: Great Is Thy Faithfulness Hymn No. 32

Scripture Reading and Prayer for the Church:
Dr. Bud Lancaster, Ruling Elder Romans 10

Preaching of the Word: Dr. Michael Calvert, Teaching Elder
“The Covenant With Moses, Part I” Exodus 19:1-6

Confession of Sin and The Lord’s Prayer

    Assurance of Pardon: Galatians 1:3-5

    Communion*:

    Song: Joyful, Joyful CCLI# 25321

Joyful, joyful, we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of Love
Hearts unfold like flowers before thee, praising Thee their sun above
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, drive the dark of doubt away
Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day

All Thy works with joy surround thee, Earth and heaven reflect Thy rays
Stars and angels sing around Thee, center of unbroken praise
Field and forest, vale and mountain, blooming meadow, flashing sea
Chanting bird and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in thee

    Benediction:

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

Over the last several months we have been tracing some of the great events of the Bible that display God’s one eternal plan of redemption. And for the last few weeks we have been in the Book of Exodus, following the Covenant people as they were miraculously rescued from their bondage in Egypt, and then began to make their way east and south toward the destination the Lord had prepared for them, Mt. Sinai. In Exodus 19 we find them there, deep in the Sinai Peninsula at the foot of the “mountain of God,” the very site where Moses had previously encountered the Great “I AM” at the burning bush (Ex 3:1ff). It was there, “in front of the mountain,” that the people of Israel “camped” (Ex 19:2). All told, they would remain there in their tents for nearly a year. During that time, the rest of the Book of Exodus, all of Leviticus, and the first ten chapters of Numbers would unfold. Obviously, the central feature of this section of Holy Scripture is the giving of God’s Law.

It’s been said that the subject of the Law of God is one of the most difficult and controversial themes in all of theology and the Bible. Perhaps there are many people who simply assume that the Law (and the whole Old Testament itself) is radically disconnected from the New Testament and the Gospel message. It’s so easy for us to draw the mistaken conclusion that the Old Testament has little, if anything, to do with the New, and that the Law is really of no use in the lives of sinners who have been saved by grace in Christ Jesus. Even for those who do recognize the blessed continuity between the testaments, there are yet legitimate questions about how the Law functions in light of our justification “apart from the Law” (Rom 3:1). Do we have to keep the Law as Christians? Can we keep it? Are the Ten Commandments still in force? Didn’t Jesus fulfill the Law of God?

    Well . . . we’re going camping!

During these hot weeks of summer we are going to camp out with Israel at the foot of Mt. Sinai. We will be making our way through Exodus 19:1 to 20:26. As we prayerfully navigate these verses we will encounter a Holy God, but One who is also a merciful Father who extends the wings of His sovereign grace to cover the sins of a persistently rebellious nation. We will also discover His will for those whom He has redeemed, set forth in ten words, or Ten Commandments. And while we’re here, roasting marshmallows by the campfire with Moses, we will carefully explore the relationship between Law and Gospel, and grace and works.

This coming Lord’s day we will consider Exodus 19:1-6, and here we will encounter a beautiful pattern that will be repeated throughout Scripture–one that we dare not miss: salvation by sovereign grace, obedience as a response, and blessing as a reward.

To better prepare yourself for these messages, let me suggest that you do a little studying in our Westminster Standards. Check out . . .

The Westminster Confession of Faith, Chapter XIX, ‘Of the Law of God.’

The Westminster Larger Catechism, Questions 91-153.

The Westminster Shorter Catechism, Questions 39-84.

You will also greatly benefit from the Heidelberg Catechism, Questions 92-115.

Links to these documents are available at our Church website.

So, get your gear and let’s go pitch our tents at Sinai!

I love you all and can’t wait to see you on the Lord’s Day,

    Mike

    ORDER OF WORSHIP
    May 24, 2015

Call to Worship: Dr. Michael Calvert, Teaching Elder
    Isaiah 12:2-6

    Pastor: Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid;
People: For the Lord God is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation.
Pastor: With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. And you will say in that day:
People: Give thanks to the Lord, call upon his name,
Pastor: Make known his deeds among the peoples, proclaim that his name is exalted.
People: Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously; let this be made known in all the earth.
All: Shout, and sing for joy, O inhabitant of Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.

    Prayer of Adoration:

    Old Testament Lesson: Ezekiel 37:1-14

Song: Lord Most High CCLI# 2037688

From the ends of the earth, from the depths of the sea
From the heights of the heavens, your name be praised
From the hearts of the weak, from the shouts of the strong
From the lips of all people, this song we raise, Lord

    CHORUS: Throughout the endless ages
You will be crowned with praises, Lord most high
Exalted in every nation, sovereign of all creation
    Lord most high, be magnified

Song: God Of My Life, To Thee I Call CCLI #5397370

God of my life, to Thee I call, afflicted at Thy feet I fall
When the great water flood prevail, leave not my trembling heart to fail

CHORUS: Poor though I am, despised, forgot
Yet God, my God, forgets me not
And he is safe, and must succeed, for whom the Lord is sure to plead

Friend of the friendless and the faint, where should I lodge my deep complaint?
Where but with Thee whose open door invites the helpless and the poor

    That were a grief I could not bear didst Thou not hear and answer prayer;
But a prayer hearing, answering God supports me under every load.

New Testament Lesson: John 15:26-27, 16:4-15

    Confession of Sin:

Eternal and merciful God, You have loved us with a love beyond our understanding, and You have set us on paths of righteousness for Your name’s sake. Yet we have strayed from Your way; we have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, through what we have done and what we have left undone. As we remember the lavish gift of Your grace we praise You and give You thanks that You forgive us yet again. Grant us now, we pray, the grace to die daily to sin, and to rise daily to new life in Christ, who lives and reigns with You, and in whose strong name we pray. Amen.

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

    Water from a rock? Really?

In our age of assumed enlightenment and intellectual superiority (what we might refer to as ‘scientific self-righteousness’) the miracles recorded in the Bible are often summarily dismissed as mythological, or easily explained away by some natural phenomena unknown to the ancient, uncivilized world and its people. For a good while now, the inherent supernaturalism of Scripture has fallen on hard times, cold hearts, and spiritually deaf ears. However, ours is a thoroughly supernatural faith, and the Bible is the inspired and infallible record of many events that have no explanation other than the sovereign power and work of God. Miracles, then, are essential to the Christian Gospel simply because they are part of God’s self-revelation in history, in Holy Scripture, and in our Lord Jesus Christ!

This Lord’s Day, we will encounter another such miraculous event in the unfolding story of redemption. In Exodus 17:1-7 there is the account of water flowing from a rock, water that quenched the thirst of the entire nation of Israel as they continued their journey in the wilderness. The water the people so desperately needed came to them as a result of Moses carrying out the direct orders of the Lord–“strike the rock and water shall come out of it” (v. 6). When Moses’ “staff,” which the Lord had given to him earlier, struck that inanimate mass of stone (vv. 5-6), it gushed forth streams of living water to the glory of God and the satisfaction of His people. A miracle indeed!

But what does this amazing and miraculous event have to do with us, and why has it been preserved in Scripture?

As you prepare for Sunday’s message, carefully reflect upon this event in the light of two other passages from Scripture. Check out John 4:1-14 and then 1 Corinthians 10:1-14, and I think you’ll begin to make the ‘covenantal connection.’

    No Sunday School

And don’t forget that there is no Sunday School beginning this week until we resume on August 9. Our time of Fellowship will be at 10:00 AM, followed by Worship at 10:30 AM.

Have a blessed holiday weekend and I’ll see you Sunday!

    I love you all,

    Mike

Call to Worship: Dr. Michael Calvert, Teaching Elder
    2 Samuel 22:2-4,31-33

Pastor: The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my Savior; You save me from violence.
People: I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies.
Pastor: This God—His way is perfect; the word of the LORD proves true; He is a shield for all those who take refuge in Him.
People: For who is God, but the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God? This God is my strong refuge and has made my way blameless.

Song: All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name Hymn 296 v.1,3,6
Song: How Deep, the Father’s Love For Us CCLI #1558110

How deep the Father’s love for us, how vast beyond all measure
That he should give his only son, to make a wretch his treasure
How great the pain of searing loss, the Father turned his face away
As wounds which mar the chosen one bring many sons to glory

Behold the man upon a cross, my sin upon his shoulders
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice call out among the scoffers
It was my sin that held him there until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life; I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything: no gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ; his death and resurrection
Why should I gain from his reward? I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart: his wounds have paid my ransom

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

This Lord’s Day our series of messages on ‘Great Events In The History of Redemption’ will continue as we consider Exodus 16:22-30. In this passage we find the very first use of the word “sabbath” in the Bible, and the record of the Lord’s initial commands regarding the seventh day of the week. What is clear from this passage is that the seventh day was to be one of rest–a holyday, set apart from the others, and dedicated to God for the purpose of renewal and celebration.

Of course, the Lord’s will for the seventh day is codified later in Exodus 20 where we discover the Ten Commandments. The fourth commandment (and later repetitions and expansions of it) specifies in more detail how the day is to be sanctified and used for the glory of God and the good of His Covenant people (Exodus 20:8-11). Then, in Exodus 31:12-17 we learn that the “sabbaths” (note the plural, referring to the weekly sabbath day as well as the seventh year sabbath and fiftieth year sabbath) are a “sign” (v. 13) of the Covenant between Israel and Yahweh, and the penalty for violation is death (v. 15).

Now, what we want to know is, what does the giving of the sabbath (and sabbaths) have to do with God’s plan of redemption and with us as the New Covenant people of God? We are prompted to raise this question in view of something that Jesus Himself claimed. In Matthew 12:8 He said, “For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”  What does this mean? What does the sabbath have to do with Jesus?

As you pray and prepare your heart for worship, spend some time reflecting upon these passages along with Hebrews 4:1-10.

Sunday is the Final Day of Sunday School for the Summer

    Old Testament Lesson: Psalm 98

Song: O The Deep, Deep Love of Jesus Hymn 535 v.1-3
Song: Wonderful, Merciful Savior CCLI# 106879

Wonderful, merciful Savior, precious redeemer and friend
Who would have thought that a lamb could rescue the souls of men?
Oh you rescue the souls of men
Counselor, comforter, keeper, Spirit we long to embrace
You offer hope when our hearts have hopelessly lost their way
Oh we hopelessly lost the way

CHORUS: You are the One that we praise, you are the One we adore
You give the healing and grace our hearts always hunger for,
Oh our hearts always hunger for

New Testament Lesson: 1 John 5:1-6
Confession of Faith: The Heidelberg Catechism

    Q. 61. Why do you say that you are righteous by faith only?

    A. Not that I am acceptable to God on account of the worthiness of my faith, but because only the satisfaction, righteousness, and holiness of Christ is my righteousness before God; and I can receive the same and make it my own in no other way than by faith only.

Song of Response: In Need CCLI# 2431435

In need of grace, in need of love
In need of mercy raining down from high above
In need of strength, in need of peace
In need of things that only You can give to me

In need of Christ, the perfect lamb
My refuge strong, the great I Am
This is my song, my humble plea
I am your child, I am in need

Scripture Reading and Prayer for the Church: Romans 8:1-25

Preaching of the Word: Dr. Michael Calvert, Teaching Elder
    “Bread From Heaven” Exodus 16:1-36

    Confession of Sin:

Pastor: Seek the LORD while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the LORD, that He may have compassion on him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon (Isaiah 55:6-7).

All: O most mighty God, and merciful Father, who has compassion upon all men, and who wills not the death of a sinner, but rather that he should turn from his sin, and be saved; mercifully forgive us our trespasses; receive and comfort us, who are grieved and wearied with the burden of our sins. Your disposition is always to have mercy; it is Your character to forgive sins. Spare us therefore, good Lord, spare Your people, whom You have redeemed; enter not into judgment with Your servants; but so turn Your anger from us, who meekly acknowledge our transgressions, and truly repent of our faults, and so make haste to help us in this world, that we may ever live with You in the world to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

    Assurance of Pardon: Ephesians 2:13-14

    Communion*:

    Song: How Deep CCLI# 4803944

You were broken that I might be healed
You were cast off that I might draw near
You were thirsty that I might come drink
Cried out in anguish that I might sing

CHORUS: How deep is Your love, how high and how wide is your mercy
How deep is Your grace, our hearts overflow with praise to you

You knew darkness that I might know light
Wept great tears that mine might be dried
Stripped of glory that I might be clothed
Crushed by Your Father to call me Your own

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

    “What is it?”

That’s the question asked by the Israelites when they woke up one morning, fresh off the miraculous deliverance at the Red Sea, and discovered a “fine flake like thing” on the ground there in the wilderness of Sin–Exodus 16:14-15. The Hebrew expression ‘what’ is used here as a play on words resulting in the term ‘manna.’ The bread that the Lord faithfully provided for His Covenant people there in the wilderness derives its name from what the people said when they first saw it on the ground. This sweet bread-like substance was the staple meal for the Israelites for forty years, and the Lord’s daily provision for the physical needs of His people sustained them all that time until they finally arrived in Canaan, the Land of Promise.

If we fast-forward through the centuries, the full magnitude of what the Lord did for His people in the wilderness with the manna becomes evident in a spectacular and most unexpected way. In John 6, Jesus provides ‘bread’ for a large multitude of very hungry people–we know this as the miracle of the feeding of the five thousand. But immediately following that amazing sign, the very crowd that Jesus fed demanded more proof that He was the divine Son of God. You can read about this in John 6:26-31. The response that Jesus gave to their challenge must have rocked them to the core–“I am the bread of life” (v. 35).

On Sunday we will discover the link between these two events, separated as they are by time, but joined by a covenantal connection that is amazing indeed!

As you pray and prepare your heart for Lord’s Day worship this week, read Exodus 16:1-21 and John 6:1-14, 26-35, 52-58.

May our Lord bless you with a restful weekend, and I’ll see you Sunday morning!

    In His great love,

    Mike

    Psalm 10:16

Prayer of Adoration and The Lord’s Prayer:

    Old Testament Lesson: Psalm 22:24-30

Song: Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus Hymn 679 v.1-4

Song: All Things New CCLI #5448157

    Come Lord and tarry not; bring the long looked for day;
O why these years of waiting here, these ages of decay?
    Come for thy saints still wait; daily ascends their sigh;
The Spirit and the Bride say “Come”, dost thou not hear the cry?

    CHORUS:
O come and make all things new, come and make all things new
O come and make all things new, build up this ruined Earth,
Come and make all things new

Come for creation groans, impatient of thy stay
Worn out with these long years of ill, these ages of delay.
    Come for love waxes cold, its steps are faint and slow;
Faith now is lost in unbelief, Hope’s lamp burns dim and low.

    New Testament Lesson: John 15:1-8

Confession of Faith: The Westminster Larger Catechism

    Q. 53. How was Christ exalted in His ascension?

    A. Christ’s exaltation in his ascension began after his resurrection when he appeared to the apostles a number of times, talked to them about the kingdom of God, and commissioned them to preach the gospel to all nations. Forty days after his resurrection, in our human nature and as our head, he visibly went up into the highest heavens, triumphing over enemies. There he receives gifts for men, raises our minds, and prepares a place for us, where he himself is and shall continue to be until his second coming at the end of the world.

Song of Response: This Is My Father’s World Hymn 111 v.1-3

    Introduction of Guest Speaker:

Confession of Sin and Assurance of Pardon: Ephesians 1:7-8

Song: Be Unto Your Name CCLI# 2177476

We are a moment, You are forever, Lord of the Ages, God before time
We are a vapor, You are eternal, Love everlasting, reigning on high

Holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Worthy is the lamb who was slain
Highest praises, honor and glory, Be unto Your name, be unto Your name

We are the broken, You are the healer, Jesus, Redeemer, mighty to save
You are the love song we’ll sing forever, Bowing before You, blessing Your name

    Benediction:

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

What a great joy it will be this weekend to welcome Jerry Bridges to our pulpit! This is Jerry’s eighth time to be with us over the last ten years, and with each visit the Lord has powerfully used him to instruct and encourage us in His service. As you know, Jerry is a gifted Bible teacher and author. His books include The Pursuit of Holiness, Trusting God, Transforming Grace, The Practice of Godliness, and The Discipline of Grace, and many others. Through his teaching and writing Jerry has faithfully proclaimed the Gospel of the grace of God in our Lord Jesus Christ as well as the profound implications associated with being a Christian disciple.

The schedule for our weekend with Jerry is:

    Tonight, 7:00-9:00 PM

    Saturday, 9:00-11:00 AM

Sunday, 9:15 AM and 10:30 AM

(A nursery will be provided for all sessions)

Please be in prayer for Jerry and Jane as they travel here today, and especially as Jerry teaches God’s Word. We look forward to a great feast of Gospel truth and sweet fellowship with our Lord and His people.

    I love you all!

    Mike
