    ORDER OF WORSHIP
    June 28, 2015

    Call to Worship: Revelation 3:20-22

Confession of Faith: 2 Timothy 2:11-13

The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful—Amen.

    Prayer of Adoration:

    Old Testament Lesson: Lamentations 3:22-32

    Corporate Confession of Sin:

O Holy Father, if Your mercy had bounds, where would be my refuge from just wrath? But Your love in Christ is without measure. Thus, I present myself to You with sins of commission and omission, against You, my Father; against You, adorable Redeemer; against You and Your strivings, O Holy Spirit; against the dictates of my conscience; against the precepts of Your Word; against my neighbors and myself. But I bless You that the finished work of Jesus needs no addition from my deeds, that His sacrifice is sufficient satisfaction for my sins. If future days be mine, help me to amend my life, to hate and abhor evil, to flee the sins I confess. O help me to set an upright example that will ever rebuke vice, allure to good- ness, and evidence that lovely are the ways of Christ. Amen.

    Assurance of Pardon: Hebrews 10:17

Song: O The Deep, Deep Love of Jesus Hymn 535 v.1-3
Song: Wonderful, Merciful Savior CCLI# 106879

Wonderful, merciful Savior, precious redeemer and friend
Who would have thought that a lamb could rescue the souls of men?
Oh you rescue the souls of men
Counselor, comforter, keeper, Spirit we long to embrace
You offer hope when our hearts have hopelessly lost their way
Oh we hopelessly lost the way

CHORUS: You are the One that we praise, you are the One we adore
You give the healing and grace our hearts always hunger for,
Oh our hearts always hunger for

Almighty infinite Father, faithfully loving your own
Here in our weakness you find us falling before your throne,
Oh we’re falling before your throne

New Testament Lesson: 2 Corinthians 10:1-5

Song: Be Unto Your Name CCLI# 2177476

We are a moment, You are forever, Lord of the Ages, God before time
We are a vapor, You are eternal, Love everlasting, reigning on high

Holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Worthy is the lamb who was slain
Highest praises, honor and glory, Be unto Your name, be unto Your name

We are the broken, You are the healer, Jesus, Redeemer, mighty to save
You are the love song we’ll sing forever, Bowing before You, blessing Your name

Fred Fohrell, Ruling Elder Romans 13

Preaching of the Word: Rev. Jeff Hamm
    John 1:1,14

    ORDER OF WORSHIP
    June 21, 2015
    Call to Worship: Psalm 143

Pastor: Hear my prayer, O Lord; give ear to my pleas for mercy! In your faithfulness answer me, in your righteousness!
People: Enter not into judgment with your servant, for no one living is righteous before you.
Pastor: For the enemy has pursued my soul; he has crushed my life to the ground; he has made me sit in darkness like those long dead.
People: Therefore my spirit faints within me; my heart within me is appalled.
Pastor: I stretch out my hands to you; my soul thirsts for you like a parched land.
People: Answer me quickly, O Lord! My spirit fails!
Pastor: Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust.
All: Deliver me from my enemies, O Lord! I have fled to you for refuge.

Confession of Faith: The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary: Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead and buried: He descended into hell: The third day he rose again from the dead: He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty: From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost: The holy universal church: The communion of saints: The forgiveness of sins: The resurrection of the body: And the life everlasting. Amen.
    Prayer of Adoration:

    Old Testament Lesson: Job 38:1-11

    Corporate Confession of Sin:

Almighty God, rich in mercy to all those who call upon You, hear us as we come to You humbly confessing our sins and transgressions, and imploring Your mercy and forgiveness. We have broken Your holy laws by our deeds and by our words, and by the sinful affections of our hearts. We confess before You our disobedience and ingratitude, our pride and willfulness, and all our failures and shortcomings toward You and toward our fellow men. Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father, and of Your great goodness grant that we may hereafter serve and please You in new- ness of life; through the merit and mediation of Jesus Christ our Lord.

    Assurance of Pardon: Colossians 1:22

Song: O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing Hymn 164 v.1-4

Song: In the Shadow of the Glorious Cross CCLI #5133895

In the shadow of the glorious cross, compelled by grace to cast my lot
I’ll discard the loss and bare your name, forsaking all for your own fame.

Your hymn of grace sung over me, abounding forth in glorious streams
My thirst is quenched by you my Lord, sustained am I, redeemed, restored
    Sustained am I, redeemed, restored

    CHORUS: Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

When death’s dark shadow’s at my feet, when I am plagued by unbelief
You place my hands into your side, by precious blood identified
    By precious blood identified

These crowns I’ve clenched with fisted hands, I cast the down before the throne
Of Christ my God, the worthy lamb, Christ crucified, the Great I AM
Christ crucified, the Great I AM, Christ crucified, the Great I AM

    New Testament Lesson: Mark 4:31-35

Song of Response: The Precious Blood CCLI# 4804297

Before the cross I kneel and see the measure of my sin
How You became a curse for me though You were innocent
The magnitude of Your great love Was shown in full degree
When righteous blood, the crimson spill rained down from Calvary

    CHORUS
Oh, the precious blood that flowed from Mercy’s side
Washed away my sin when Christ my Savior died
Oh, the precious blood of Christ the crucified
It speaks for me before Your throne where I stand justified

And who am I that I should know this treasure of such worth
My Savior’s pure atoning blood shed for the wrath I’d earned
For sin has stained my every deed my every word and thought
What wondrous love that makes me one your priceless blood has bought

  • Announcements – June 19 2015

    Church Family,

This coming Lord’s Day we welcome PCA Chaplain Rev. Bob Owen (Colonel US Army) to our pulpit to preach in Mike’s absence (see his bio below). Colonel Owen will be peaching a message entitled, “Identity Trumps All: Answering ‘These Things’ By Faith” from Romans 8:31-39. Please be in prayer for Bob as he comes to deliver God’s Word to us.

The God Who REDEEMS: Our Identity in Christ

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

Romans 8 is one of those well-known passages of scripture that yet defies comprehensive exposition and understanding due to the depths and riches of what the Holy Spirit communicates to us about our triune God’s redemption through Christ.

Last week, Pastor Mike took us to Exodus 19, at the foot of Mount Sinai to meet the God who IS, where we found God to be altogether DIFFERENT, HOLY, Set-apart, awe-inspiring and merciful. He concluded with both the reassuring and deeply challenging REALITY that God is NOT how we would have Him to be, BUT AS HE has revealed Himself to be: Holy, Just, full of BOTH wrath AND MERCY, showing HIS GREAT love for us by giving His One and ONLY SON. Remember what Mike reminded us? The justice and Mercy of God come together in the Love of Christ shown/demonstrated/displayed for us on the Cross.

This LORD’s Day we will look to Romans 8 and find the GOD WHO REDEEMS via Paul’s wonderful exposition of our IDENTITY, INHERITANCE, and INTERCESSOR IN CHRIST. Some have suggested that the letter to the Roman Christians is the highpoint of Scripture and JI Packer has noted that if so, then Romans 8 is the highpoint of Romans! I was inspired by the majesty and HOPE, by the glories of God in this chapter WEEKS ago, hearing the simple and straightforward reading of it in worship by Ruling Elder Fred Fohrell. What a MESSAGE Christ’s Church must hear and embrace by faith, each and every generation! In Christ we have a new identity which transforms us not only into a new creation, people, and community, but an identity which includes us as adopted heirs of the glories and riches of His kingdom!

This coming Lord’s Day morning we will continue to meet the God who is Holy AND Redeems. We will be reminded of His great salvation in Christ and our Adoption so that, by His grace, we cry out in faith, “If God is for us, who is against us? . . . in all these things, we are MORE than CONQUERORS through him who loved us.”
As you pray for the preaching of the Word and prepare your heart for worship, prayerfully read over our text several times (include all of Romans 8 for context; also read Colossians 1:13-20 for a preview of some concluding applications).

Pastor Mike Sightings? (He said he would ‘Disappear!’)

As many of you may know, ministers in the PCA are encouraged to take off four weeks per year, as this is greatly beneficial for them and for the congregations they serve. Pray for Mike and his Family as they take a well-deserved and needed rest. Next week, June 28, Rev. Jeff Hamm (also a Teaching Elder in the PCA) will lead us in worship. Please pray for this dear brother as he prepares to lead our worship and deliver God’s Word in Mike’s absence.

  • Announcements – June 12 2015

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

At some point in our lives we’ve all been in those conversations when the subject of religion comes up. Eventually the talk turns to address the nature and character of God. Someone in the conversation will typically begin a sentence this way: ‘I believe that God is __________.’ Or, ‘I just know in my heart that God would never ___________.’ Those blanks are filled in with all kinds of things, normally expressing our own expectations and preconceived notions about the divine.

However, the veiled question on the table in such discussions is ‘What is God really like?’ And that’s obviously a huge thing to consider. But who among us has the definitive answer? Who is authorized to say what God is like, and to speak authoritatively about what He would or would not do?

As Christians who affirm the full inspiration and sufficiency of the Scriptures, we open up our Bibles in order to discover the true nature and character of the awesome God who has saved us (not to mention beholding His handiwork in creation–Psalm 19). Rather than appealing to our own needs, subjective expectations, and preconceived ideas about God, we seek the truth He has revealed concerning Himself in His Word and, ultimately, in His Incarnate Son.

Exodus 19:9-25 is one of those critical places in the Scripture where God has made Himself known to us in a most spectacular way. This divine self-disclosure occurs on Mount Sinai just before the Covenant people are given the Ten Commandments. What we read about Him here is breathtaking, awe-inspiring, and frankly disturbing. It shatters all of our ideas about Him, rewrites our theology, and leaves us in the dust calling for divine mercy!

This coming Lord’s Day morning we will meet the God who is Holy. We will behold Him as He has seen fit to reveal Himself, not as we might want Him to be. And, quite strangely, by means of His grace we will be drawn in closer despite our appropriate apprehension.

As you pray for the preaching of the Word and prepare your heart for worship, prayerfully read over our sermon text several times (as well as Hebrews 12:18-29 for the ‘New Covenant connection’).

    Pastor to Disappear

Beginning this coming Monday (June 15 until June 29) I am going to ‘disappear’ for a little while. As many of you may know, ministers in the PCA are encouraged to take off four weeks per year, as this is greatly beneficial for them and for the congregations they serve. This year I’m going to take two of these weeks together here in June. Preaching in my place on June 21 will be Colonel Bob Owen (a PCA Teaching Elder and Chaplain with the US Army), and on June 28 will be Rev. Jeff Hamm (also a Teaching Elder in the PCA). Please pray for these dear brothers as they prepare to lead our worship and deliver God’s Word in my absence. And should a need arise while I’m away please contact one of our Ruling Elders or Mr. Jack Cooper our Administrator.

I pray that you will all have a restful weekend, and I can’t wait to worship our Great God with you this Lord’s Day!

I love you all so dearly,

    Mike

    ORDER OF WORSHIP
    June 7, 2015

Call to Worship: Dr. Michael Calvert, Teaching Elder
    Isaiah 60:1-12,19,21

Pastor: Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you.
People: For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the LORD will arise upon you, and His glory will be seen upon you.
Pastor: The sun shall be no more your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give you light; but the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory.
People: Your people shall all be righteous; they shall possess the land forever, the branch of My planting, the work of My hands, that I might be glorified.

    Prayer of Adoration:

    Old Testament Lesson: Genesis 3:8-15

Confession of Faith: The Heidelberg Catechism

Q 4. What does the Law of God require of us?

    A. Christ teaches us in sum, Matthew 22, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

Q 5. Can you keep all this perfectly?

    A. No, for I am prone by nature to hate God and my neighbor

Corporate Confession of Sin and Assurance of Pardon: Colossians 1:13-14

He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Song: All Creatures of Our God and King Hymn 115 v.1-2,5

Song: To Thee I Come CCLI #5445851

To thee I come, a sinner poor, and wait for mercy at thy door
Indeed I’ve nowhere else to flee, Oh God be merciful to me!
To thee I come, a sinner weak, and scarce know how to pray or speak
From fear and weakness set me free, Oh God be merciful to me!

To thee I come, a sinner vile, upon me Lord vouchsafe to smile
Mercy through blood, I make my plea, Oh God be merciful to me!
To thee I come, a sinner great, and well thou knowest all my state
Yet full forgiveness is with thee, Oh God be merciful to me!

To thee I come, a sinner lost, nor have I aught wherein to trust
But where thou art, Lord I would be, Oh God be merciful to me!
To glory bring me Lord at last, and then when all my sins are passed
With all the saints, I’ll then agree, Oh God was merciful to me!
Oh God was merciful to me!

  • Announcement – Women’s Summer Bible Study

    Ladies,

I am super excited to announce that we are planning a summer bible study so that we can stay in the Word and in fellowship throughout the long, hot months coming up! This study will begin in July and run through August.

What? A summer bible study for Christ Pres women (and guests)

    When? Mondays at 7 p.m.

    Idol Addiction

Facing your false gods and restoring your sanity with the gospel you thought you knew.

I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead I do what I hate.” – The Apostle Paul

We may not bow to golden statues but we are idolaters. An idol is anything we turn toward to make life work apart from God and we all have one (or more). Approval, family and career are among the host of false gods we look to for our security and satisfaction. Rather than freeing us, these idols drive us to anxiety, control, anger and countless other sins that erode our connection with God and one another. Like Paul, we don’t do what we truly desire and do what we despise. We are addicts, returning repeatedly to the fruitless means we use to attempt to please our idols and numb our pain; thwarting our heart’s desire by grasping for it on our own. We don’t need a ‘little help” to break this crazy cycle. We need an all-out rescue from the God who not only saves but satisfies. This is for all of us not just the alcoholic, work-aholic or codependent. Come along as we identify together our individual idols, confront our personal powerlessness to overcome them and discover how the life we’re yearning for is right inside the gospel we thought we knew.

Bible study will consist of a 45 minute video teaching by author Julie Sparkman, followed by a 25-30 minute group discussion of the material and prayer time (related to the material). Each week, there is a one page homework assignment with scripture and a few diagnostic questions for discussion.

Group will be facilitated by Ashley Turnbull.

What’s Law Got To Do With It?

Dear Brothers and Sisters in our Lord Jesus Christ,

Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) once wrote that there are few things within the Christian life that are as frustratingly complex and difficult as understanding the rightful place of the Law in the life of the believer in Christ:

“There is perhaps no part of divinity [Christian doctrine] attended with so much intricacy, and wherein orthodox divines [theologians] do so much differ as stating the precise agreement and difference between the two dispensations of Moses and Christ” (From his Inquiry Concerning the Qualifications for Communion).

In other words, even a massive Christian intellect like Edwards struggled at times to understand the exact relationship between the Law of Moses and the Gospel of our Lord and Savior. This struggle for understanding has historically resulted in two extreme and disparate views of Law and Grace. Some believe that the Law of God has been totally abrogated in Christ to such a point that there is little, if any, use for it at all. The technical name for this view is antinomianism–or literally, ‘against-the-Law-ism.’ The antinomian is the person who essentially believes that Law and Grace are totally opposed and cannot possibly coexist, particularly in the experience of the Christian who has been saved by grace alone. They believe that the Christian life is all about grace, exclusively so, and that there are no commands (especially those in the Old Testament) relevant to and binding upon New Covenant believers.

The other side of that heterodox coin is, of course, legalism. The legalist is exclusively concerned with the Law, as if Grace does not exist and plays no part in our relationship with God. The legalist looks at God’s Law and sees within it a plan of redemption. He assumes that the righteousness that God requires comes by obedience, not by faith in Christ alone. And legalists are notorious for creating ‘homemade laws’ in addition to those recorded in Scripture just as the Pharisees did centuries before! At the end of the day, both the antinomian and the legalist make the same fatal error, that of interpreting the Law apart from its redemptive context–that is, apart from the One who is the telos, or termination point of the Law (see Romans 10:4).

So, if both of these extremes are far removed from the truth, what is the purpose (or purposes) for God’s Law? Are Law and Grace hopelessly opposed? Or, to put this another way, is the Covenant with Abraham (the Covenant of salvation and grace) somehow replaced by the Covenant with Moses (the Covenant of Law)? Has Law superseded Gospel? Were the Old Testament ‘saints’ saved by Law or by Gospel? And finally, why did God give and preserve His Law in the first place? What use is it to us today?

Well, these are the very important questions we will attempt to answer this coming Lord’s Day from the pages of Scripture. Our sermon text will be taken from Exodus 19:5-8.

Let’s join in prayer that our Lord’s blessed Word will be proclaimed in power and clarity, and that He will show us the beauty, simplicity, and abiding relevance of His Holy Law and the sweetness and power of the Gospel of our Lord and Savior.

I love you all so much,

    Mike
