    ORDER OF WORSHIP
    September 27, 2015

Call to Worship: Proverbs 21:1-2; 30-31
Pastor: The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; he turns it wherever he will.
People: Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the heart.
Pastor: To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.
People: No wisdom, no understanding, no counsel can avail against the Lord.
All: The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but the victory belongs to the Lord.

    Prayer of Adoration:

    Old Testament Lesson: Psalm 124

Song: O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing Hymn 164 v.1-4

Song: In the Shadow of the Glorious Cross CCLI #5133895

In the shadow of the glorious cross, compelled by grace to cast my lot
I’ll discard the loss and bare your name, forsaking all for your own fame.

Your hymn of grace sung over me, abounding forth in glorious streams
My thirst is quenched by you my Lord, sustained am I, redeemed, restored
    Sustained am I, redeemed, restored

    CHORUS: Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

When death’s dark shadow’s at my feet, when I am plagued by unbelief
You place my hands into your side, by precious blood identified
    By precious blood identified

These crowns I’ve clenched with fisted hands, I cast the down before the throne
Of Christ my God, the worthy lamb, Christ crucified, the Great I AM
Christ crucified, the Great I AM, Christ crucified, the Great I AM

    New Testament Lesson: Ephesians 4:17-27

    Corporate Prayer of Confession:

Almighty God, we confess how hard it is to be Your people. You have called us to be the Church, to continue the mission of Jesus Christ to our lonely and confused world. Yet we acknowledge we are more apathetic than active, isolated than involved, callous than compassionate, obstinate than obedient, legalistic than loving.

Gracious Lord, have mercy upon us and forgive our sins. Remove the obstacles preventing us from being Your representatives to a broken world. Awaken our hearts to the promised gift of Your indwelling Spirit. This we pray in Jesus’ powerful name. Amen.

    Assurance of Pardon: Romans 7:24-25

Song of Response: I Know Whom I Have Believed Hymn 705 v.1-4

Scripture Reading and Prayer for the Church:
Dr. Bud Lancaster, Ruling Elder Matthew 4:1-25

Preaching of the Word: Dr. Michael Calvert, Teaching Elder
“The Sixth Commandment: You Shall Not Murder, Part Two” Exodus 20:13

    Prayer of Preparation:

Confession of Faith: The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary: Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead and buried: He descended into hell: The third day he rose again from the dead: He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty: From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost: The holy universal church: The communion of saints: The forgiveness of sins: The resurrection of the body: And the life everlasting. Amen.

    Communion*:

Song: Holy, Holy, Holy Hymn 100 v.1-4

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

The Sixth Commandment in the Decalogue is composed of just two terse words as originally given, “Never murder” (Exodus 20:13). When asked about our own personal guilt regarding this Commandment, most of us might reply as did the ‘rich young ruler’ in Luke 18:21, “All these things I have kept from my youth up.”   No bloodshed, no dead bodies. Therefore, no murder, no guilt, and no problem.

    Then . . . along comes Jesus . . .

Take a good look at what He said in the Sermon on the Mount about the sin of murder:

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire”–Matthew 5:21-22.

Now, all of the sudden we have a big problem indeed!

While the Law of Moses does, in fact, say “Never murder”–that is, never take an innocent life–Jesus declared His authoritative interpretation and application of this Holy Commandment. And according to the way Jesus reads the Law of Moses, one can murder with the heart and the mouth, not only with the hand. One can be guilty of murder and the violation of the Sixth Commandment without actually killing anyone, without bloodshed, without the need for a funeral!

This coming Lord’s Day we will explore these powerful words of Jesus as recorded in Matthew 5:21-22. As you pray and prepare for worship spend some time reading and reflecting upon the larger context of this passage in Matthew 5:17-48.

    Reminder for All Men

I’m very excited about our 2015 Men’s Fall Bible Study that will take place during the month of October! Each Sunday evening in October (4, 11, 18, 25) we will gather from 5:00 to 6:30 PM in the Education Building for fellowship and the study of God’s Word. Our lessons will be based upon one of the sermons of Thomas Watson (the great Puritan theologian and preacher of seventeenth century England) entitled, ‘Man’s Chief End Is to Glorify God.’ Our special time of study will end with a Men’s Cookout on Friday night October 23 and a Breakfast on Saturday morning October 24. All men of the Church are invited, and guests are most welcome to join us!

Have blessed and restful weekend and I’ll see you Sunday!

    In His great love,

    Mike

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

The Sixth Commandment in the Decalogue simply states, “You shall not murder” (Exodus 20:13). This Commandment, consisting of just two words in its original Hebrew form, represents the first of four tersely stated prohibitions (the others forbidding adultery, stealing, and bearing false witness). However, as simple as these words are they are often misapplied. Perhaps you’ve memorized this Commandment as rendered in the King James Version–“Thou shalt not kill.” But the word “kill,” at least as we typically understand it, is not what is in view here. “Murder” is the better translation, and this refers to the unjustified taking of a human life.

Over the course of the next few Sundays we are going to explore this simple Commandment. As you might suspect, the implications and contemporary applications of this sacred Word are as numerous as they are convicting, and as close as today’s headlines. To better prepare for the introductory message on this Commandment look over the following passages from the Old Testament: Genesis 1:26-27; 4:8-11; 9:6; Exodus 21:12; Leviticus 24:17; Deuteronomy 27:24.

  • Order of Worship – September 20 2015

    Call to Worship: Psalm 18:16-19
Pastor: He sent from on high, He took me; He drew me out of many waters.
People: He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me.
Pastor: They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the Lord was my stay.
    People: He brought me forth also into a broad place;
All: He rescued me, because He delighted in me.

    Prayer of Adoration:

    Old Testament Lesson: Jeremiah 11:18-20

Song: All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name Hymn 296 v.1,3,6
Song: How Deep, the Father’s Love For Us CCLI #1558110

How deep the Father’s love for us, how vast beyond all measure
That he should give his only son, to make a wretch his treasure
How great the pain of searing loss, the Father turned his face away
As wounds which mar the chosen one bring many sons to glory

Behold the man upon a cross, my sin upon his shoulders
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice call out among the scoffers
It was my sin that held him there until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life; I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything: no gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ; his death and resurrection
Why should I gain from his reward? I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart: his wounds have paid my ransom

    New Testament Lesson: Mark 9:30-37

    Prayer of Confession:

    Assurance of Pardon: Colossians 1:19-20

Song of Response: Have Thine Own Way Hymn 688 v.1-4

Scripture Reading and Prayer for the Church:
Fred Fohrell, Ruling Elder Matthew 3:1-17

Preaching of the Word: Dr. Michael Calvert, Teaching Elder
“The Sixth Commandment: You Shall Not Murder, Part One” Exodus 20:13

    Prayer of Preparation:

Confession of Faith: The Heidelberg Catechism – Lord’s Day 40

Q 105. What does God require in the sixth commandment?

A: That I do not revile, hate, insult, or kill my neighbor either in thought, word, or gesture, much less in deed, whether by myself or by another, but lay aside all desire of revenge; moreover, that I do not harm myself, nor willfully run into any danger. Wherefore also to restrain murder the magistrate is armed with the sword.

Q 106. Does this commandment speak only of killing?

A: No, but in forbidding murder God teaches us that He abhors its very root, namely, envy, hatred, anger, and desire of revenge; and that in His sight all these are hidden murder.

    Communion*:

Song: Why So Heavy CCLI# 5543234

Oh why so heavy, oh my soul? Thus to myself I’ve willed
Oh why so heavy, oh my heart? And why so sorrow filled?

CHORUS: Hope thou in God, He still shall be Thy glory and thy endless praise
His saving grace shall comfort thee through everlasting days,

His goodness made thee what thou art and yet will he redeem
Oh be thou of a contrite heart and put your trust in him.

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

The Fifth Commandment in the Decalogue, found in Exodus 20:12, is typically regarded as the first of six Commandments in the ‘Second Table’ of the Law. Commandments one to four, the ‘First Table,’ have to do with our relationship to God, while the remaining six treat our relationships with others. Of course, our Lord Jesus divided the Decalogue into two tables, the first revealing how we are to love God, and the second revealing how we are to love our neighbor (Luke 10:27). This Fifth Commandment, addressed to the children of the Covenant, requires that both “father” and “mother” receive the “honor” they are due as God’s representatives.

With this Commandment, the subject of ‘authority’ is introduced, and here we learn that God has established a command structure among His people. While ultimately ruled by His Word as delivered and mediated through Moses, the people of Israel were also to recognize the earthly authorities that God had appointed for them. And first among these are the parents.

Admittedly, the word ‘authority’ is not the most popular term these days. Indeed, we might even characterize our age as ‘anti-authority’ given the pervasive presupposition of personal autonomy that seems to rule our thinking. However, from the very start God’s Covenant people have always been a people under authority; first, under God’s Sovereign reign, and also under the authorities He has ordained in the ‘city of man’ (see Romans 13:1-7 for example).

But what exactly does this Fifth Commandment mean, and how is it applicable to us as the New Covenant people redeemed by Christ and made members of His body, the Church? Well, this will be our subject for the sermon this coming Lord’s Day as we continue our journey though the ‘Great Events In the History of Redemption.’

Along with Exodus 20:12, get familiar with these other passages from Scripture that we will also consider on Sunday: Ephesians 6:1-4 and Colossians 3:20-21.

I love you all, and you are always on my heart and in my prayers,

    Mike

Pastor: I love the Lord, because he has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy.
People: Because he inclined his ear to me, therefore I will call on him as long as I live.
Pastor: The snares of death encompassed me; the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me; I suffered distress and anguish.
People: Then I called on the name of the Lord: “O Lord, I pray, deliver my soul!”
Pastor: Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful.
People: The Lord preserves the simple; when I was brought low, he saved me.
Pastor: Return, O my soul, to your rest; for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.
All: For you have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling.

    Prayer of Confession:

    Assurance of Pardon: Colossians 2:13-14

Song: How Sweet to Wait Upon the Lord CCLI#5543210

How sweet to wait upon the Lord, while He fulfills His gracious word
To seek His face, and not in vain, to be so loved, and love again

CHORUS: Amen! Our heart with rapture cry, may we with reverence look so high
Ascended savior, fix our eyes, by faith upon this glorious prize

With this delightful prospect fired, we’ll run, nor in thy ways be tired
And all the trials here we see, will make us long to reign with Thee

To see, while prostrate at His feet, Jehovah on the mercy seat
And Jesus, at the Lord’s right hand, with His divine atonement stand!

“Father” he cries, “I will that these before thee on their bended knees
for who my life I once laid down, be with me soon on this my throne.”

Scripture Reading and Prayer for the Church:
Fred Fohrell, Ruling Elder Matthew 2:1-23

    Prayer of Preparation:

Confession of Faith: The Heidelberg Catechism – Lord’s Day 39

Q 104. What does God require in the fifth commandment?

A: That I show all honor, love, and faithfulness to my father and mother, and to all in authority over me, submit myself with due obedience to all their good instruction and correction, and also bear patiently with their infirmities, since it is God’s will to govern us by their hand.

    Communion*:

Song: Before the Throne CCLI# 2306412

Before the throne of God above, I have a strong and perfect plea
A great High Priest whose name is love, who ever lives and pleads for me
My name is graven on His hands, my name is written on His heart
I know that while in heav’n He stands, no tongue can bid me thence depart
No tongue can bid me thence depart

When Satan tempts me to despair, and tells me of the guilt within
Upward I look and see Him there, who made an end of all my sin
One with Himself, I cannot die, my soul is purchased by His blood
My life is hid with Christ on high, with Christ my Savior and my God
With Christ my Savior and my God

Behold Him there, the risen Lamb, my perfect, spotless Righteousness
The great unchangeable I AM, the King of glory and of grace
Because the sinless Savior died, my sinful soul is counted free
For God the Just is satisfied, to look on Him and pardon me
To look on Him and pardon me

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

On this coming Lord’s Day we will take our fourth and final look at the Fourth Commandment in the Decalogue. Having surveyed the Old Testament background of this Commandment and traced the development of the ‘Sabbath theme’ from creation to the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ, we will now seek to apply this Commandment to the life and witness of the New Testament Church. Of primary concern to most of us is why the first Christians stopped observing the Sabbath, the seventh day, and met for their corporate worship on Sunday, the first day. What brought about such a drastic change? What is the connection, if any, between the Sabbath and Sunday? And do the Old Covenant restrictions of work on the seventh day still apply to the first day? Each of these questions is very important, and we must proceed with great care and prayer as we seek to answer them in light of the New Testament’s witness to Christ as the “end of the Law” (Romans 10:4).

As you pray and prepare your heart for Lord’s Day worship, take some time to meditate upon the words of our sermon text–Hebrews 3:12-4:11.   And thank you once again for your faithful prayers for the proclamation of God’s Word to His people.

    Special Announcement for All Men

Oh our hearts always hunger for

Almighty infinite Father, faithfully loving your own
Here in our weakness you find us falling before your throne,
Oh we’re falling before your throne

    New Testament Lesson: Mark 7:24-37

    Public Confession of Sin:

Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of all things, Judge of all men; we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, by thought, word and deed, against your Divine Majesty, provoking most justly Your wrath and indignation against us. We so earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings. The remembrance of them is intolerable. Because of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, forgive us all that is past. And grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please You in newness of life, to the honor and glory of Your Name. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

    Assurance of Pardon: Galatians 3:13

Song: Be Unto Your Name CCLI# 2177476

We are a moment, You are forever, Lord of the Ages, God before time
We are a vapor, You are eternal, Love everlasting, reigning on high

Holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Worthy is the lamb who was slain
Highest praises, honor and glory, Be unto Your name, be unto Your name

We are the broken, You are the healer, Jesus, Redeemer, mighty to save
You are the love song we’ll sing forever, bowing before You, blessing Your name

Scripture Reading and Prayer for the Church:

Preaching of the Word: Dr. Michael Calvert, Teaching Elder
“The Fourth Commandment: Sabbath Rest, Part 4”
    Exodus 20:8-11; Hebrews 4:1-16

    Prayer of Preparation:

Confession of Faith: The Heidelberg Catechism – Lord’s Day 38

Q 103. What does God require in the Fourth Commandment?

    A. In the first place, God wills that the ministry of the Gospel and schools be maintained, and that I, especially on the day of rest, diligently attend church to learn the Word of God, to use the holy sacraments, to call publicly upon the Lord, and to give Christian alms. In the second place, that all the days of my life I rest from my evil works, allow the Lord to work in me by His Spirit, and thus begin in this life the everlasting Sabbath.

    Communion*:

Song: Oh Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go Hymn No 708, v,1, 3-4

    Benediction:

*Professing and baptized members in good standing of a Church in which Jesus Christ is proclaimed as Lord and Savior are warmly invited to join us in the celebration of the Lord’s Supper.
