    Call to Worship: Hebrews 12:1-2

    Prayer of Adoration:

    Old Testament Lesson: Psalm 66:1-9

    Pastor: Shout for joy to God, all the earth; sing the glory of his name; give to him glorious praise!
    People: Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds! So great is your power that your enemies come cringing to you.
    Pastor: All the earth worships you and sings praises to you; they sing praises to your name.”
    People: Come and see what God has done: he is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man.
    Pastor: He turned the sea into dry land; they passed through the river on foot.
    People: There did we rejoice in him, who rules by his might forever, whose eyes keep watch on the nations—let not the rebellious exalt themselves.
    All: Bless our God, O peoples; let the sound of his praise be heard, who has kept our soul among the living and has not let our feet slip.

    Song: How Deep – CCLI# 4803944

    You were broken that I might be healed
    You were cast off that I might draw near
    You were thirsty that I might come drink
    Cried out in anguish that I might sing

    CHORUS: How deep is Your love, how high and how wide is your mercy
    How deep is Your grace, our hearts overflow with praise to you

    You knew darkness that I might know light
    Wept great tears that mine might be dried
    Stripped of glory that I might be clothed
    Crushed by Your Father to call me Your own

    Song: Come Ye Souls By Sin Afflicted – CCLI# 2263115

    Come ye souls by sin afflicted, Bowed with fruitless sorrow down;
    By the broken law convicted, through the cross, behold the crown;
    Look to Jesus; Look to Jesus; Look to Jesus;
    Mercy flows through Him alone.

    Take His easy yoke and wear it; Love will make your obedience sweet
    Christ will give you strength to bear it, while His grace shall guide your feet
    Safe to glory, Safe to glory, Safe to glory,
    Where His ransomed captives meet.

    Blessed are the eyes that see Him, Blest the ears that hear His voice;
    Blessed are the souls that trust Him, And in Him alone rejoice;
    His commandments, His commandments, His commandments
    Then become their happy choice.

    Sweet as home to pilgrims weary, Light to newly, opened eyes,
    Like full springs in deserts dreary, Is the rest the cross supplies;
    All who taste it, All who taste it, All who taste it
    Shall to rest immortal rise.

    Look to Jesus; Look to Jesus; Look to Jesus;
    Mercy flows through Him alone.

I believe in the Holy Ghost: The holy universal church: The communion of saints: The forgiveness of sins: The resurrection of the body: And the life everlasting. Amen.

    Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus our Lord,

    This Sunday morning we are beginning a series of messages from the Epistle of James.  This is a New Testament letter that most of us are familiar with, at least in terms of the memorable verses that appear in the first chapter concerning various kinds of trials, and the summons to meet them all with great “joy” in the Lord (1:2).  And we might also think immediately of the very strong words that James has written in chapter 2 about the relationship of saving faith in Christ and the outward evidence that accompanies true faith.  James declares that, “faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead” (2:17).  And there are other prominent themes in this letter: temptation and its source; the use of the tongue; the care for the poor and needy among God’s people; the grave dangers of worldliness; warnings to those who are rich; and suffering as a believer.

    But there is another very important theme that develops quite apparently here in the five brief chapters of James’ letter. It is that of wisdom—the “wisdom” that is from the Lord above. This special wisdom is to be vastly distinguished from the kind of wisdom that circulates in the world in its estrangement from God.  And though the actual word “wisdom” makes an appearance only 4 times in the Epistle, it is nevertheless most critical for understanding the letter that this man named “James” has penned.  Let me show you where this key word is found in the Epistle:

    1: 5  “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”

    3:13  “Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.”

    3:15This [see v. 14] is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.”

    3:17But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.”

    We might say, then, that one of the most important reasons for the writing of this New Testament letter was the need for God’s people to develop this “wisdom”—the kind that characterizes the Kingdom of God.  In other words, it would seem that one of the vital needs of the Body of Christ in any age and place is that of the “wisdom from above.”

    As we begin a summer-long study of this Epistle, let’s beseech the Lord to teach us to be wise, and to show us the pathway of wisdom upon which we must walk in a true and living faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.

    Have a blessed weekend and I can’t wait to see you on the Lord’s Day,

    Mike

    Call to Worship: Revelation 22:13

    Prayer of Adoration:

    Old Testament Lesson: Psalm 31

    Song: O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing – Hymn 164 v.1-4

    Song: In the Shadow of the Glorious Cross – CCLI #5133895

    In the shadow of the glorious cross, compelled by grace to cast my lot
    I’ll discard the loss and bare your name, forsaking all for your own fame.

    Your hymn of grace sung over me, abounding forth in glorious streams
    My thirst is quenched by you my Lord, sustained am I, redeemed, restored
    Sustained am I, redeemed, restored

    CHORUS: Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

    When death’s dark shadow’s at my feet, when I am plagued by unbelief
    You place my hands into your side, by precious blood identified
    By precious blood identified

    These crowns I’ve clenched with fisted hands, I cast them down before the throne
    Of Christ my God, the worthy lamb, Christ crucified, the Great I AM
    Christ crucified, the Great I AM, Christ crucified, the Great I AM
    New Testament Lesson: 1 Peter 2:2-10

    Confession of Sin: From Romans 7

    Pastor: For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.
    People: For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.
    Pastor: For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.
    People: Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?
    All: Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

    Assurance of Pardon: 1 Corinthians 1:30-31

    Song: Amazing Grace – Hymn 460 v1-3,6

    Scripture Reading and Prayer for the Church:

    “Wrath and Mercy: The Fall of Jericho, Part Three” – Joshua 6:22-27

    Confession of Faith: The Heidelberg Catechism

    Q 88. In how many things does true repentance or conversion consist?
    A. In two things: the dying of the old man, and the making alive of the new.
    Q 89. What is the dying of the old man?
    A. Heartfelt sorrow for sin, causing us to hate and turn from it always more and more.

    Communion*:

    Song: Before the Throne – CCLI# 2306412

    Before the throne of God above, I have a strong and perfect plea
    A great High Priest whose name is love, who ever lives and pleads for me
    My name is graven on His hands, my name is written on His heart
    I know that while in heav’n He stands, no tongue can bid me thence depart
    No tongue can bid me thence depart

    When Satan tempts me to despair, and tells me of the guilt within
    Upward I look and see Him there, who made an end of all my sin
    One with Himself, I cannot die, my soul is purchased by His blood
    My life is hid with Christ on high, with Christ my Savior and my God
    With Christ my Savior and my God

    Behold Him there, the risen Lamb, my perfect, spotless Righteousness
    The great unchangeable I AM, the King of glory and of grace
    Because the sinless Savior died, my sinful soul is counted free
    For God the Just is satisfied, to look on Him and pardon me
    To look on Him and pardon me

    Benediction: 1 Peter 5:14

    Peace to all of you who are in Christ

    Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

    This coming Lord’s Day we will take one final look at the story of Joshua and the mighty fall of the walls of Jericho.  Our text will be Joshua 6:20-27. To be sure, the actions that are detailed here in this inspired chapter of Holy Scripture are disturbing. Not only did the Lord bring down the walls of the once great city, but all of the inhabitants of Jericho from the youngest to the oldest died by “the edge of the sword” (v. 21).  The one blessed exception to this act of complete destruction was the household of “Rahab the prostitute” (v. 25).

    As we examine the debris of the flattened city—and her once impenetrable walls— we wonder how the Lord’s sweeping judgment upon the entire population of this city fits in with the overall story of redemption. That is, we are curious as to how this act of divine retribution ‘connects’ with our Lord Jesus and the Kingdom He came to establish.  Is the story of Jericho’s annihilation a glaring contradiction (and embarrassment) to the Gospel of grace and mercy through our dying and rising Savior?

    In a most particular way, this Old Testament account of God’s well-deserved judgment upon sinners serves to foreshadow both a great act of judgment and a deeper reach of God’s mercy in Jesus our Lord.  We will look at how this happens as we gather around the Word on Sunday.

    Looking Ahead

    Beginning next Sunday, May 1, we will be setting Joshua aside temporarily to begin our summer preaching series entitled ‘The Way of Wisdom: Expositions From the Epistle of James.’ If you would like a good commentary to read as we study this book together, let me suggest The Message of James, by J. A. Motyer.  You can check it out at the link below.

But the unrepentant and hypocrites eat and drink judgment to themselves.

    Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

    Over the last few weeks we have been studying those events that immediately precede the most well known story in the Book of Joshua, the mighty fall of the walls of Jericho. And this coming Lord’s Day we will consider the precise plan that the Lord gave to Joshua for the conquest of the city—their first objective in the actual possession of the land that He had promised to Abraham and his descendants so long ago.

    As we reflect upon the rather strange details of the plan of battle (vv. 3-7), let us remember that the Lord had given to Joshua and the Covenant people a most marvelous and reassuring promise of complete victory—And the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and mighty men of valor” (v. 2). Such a wonderful promise as this was no small thing, for the Word of the Lord was the very foundation of their hope. Without this Word, without this clear and definitive message from the Lord God Almighty, there would be nothing to guide them, nothing to believe in, and no reason to anticipate victory over such a formidable enemy! Truly, the Covenant people had to decide right there and then to be a people who were always “standing on the promises of God.”

    As you prepare for worship, carefully read this story again (vv. 3-21), and join me in prayer that our Lord will teach us the rich truths of salvation from His inspired Book.

    Before I go, let me remind all of our men that our Men’s Spring Bible Study will conclude this Sunday evening from 5:00 to 6:30 PM with our Fellowship Dinner. We will wrap up our study of ‘Christ: Our Prophet, Priest, and King,” and enjoy a delicious meal together.

    I love you all so dearly, and I look forward to seeing you this Lord’s Day!

    In His grace,

    Mike

    Thou on my head in early youth didst smile; And though rebellious, and perverse meanwhile
    Thou hast not left me, though I oft left thee, On to the close, Lord, abide with me.

    I need Thy presence every passing hour; what but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s pow’r?
    Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, abide with me.

    I fear no foe with Thee at hand to bless; ills have no weight, tears lose their bitterness
    Where is thy sting death? Where grave thy victory? I triumph still, abide with me

    Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes; shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies
    Heav’n’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee; in life in death, abide with me.

    Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

    Our sermon passage for this coming Lord’s Day is Joshua 6:1-7. In this portion of the chapter, the Lord promises Joshua and the Covenant people that He has given the walled city of Jericho into their hands (v. 2), and that victory over the Canaanite stronghold is a certainty. But the battle plan the Israelites will employ by order of the Lord is a very strange one indeed (vv. 3-5). Once again we will look for the ‘covenantal connections’ that point us to the work of our Savior and the life of discipleship that He has called each of us to in His redeeming grace.
