    Call to Worship: Psalm 118:1-4

    Prayer of Adoration:

    Old Testament Lesson: Genesis 25:19-23

Confession of Faith: The Heidelberg Catechism

Q 4 What does the Law of God require of us?
    A. Christ teaches us in sum, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

Song: A Mighty Fortress Is Our God – Hymn No. 92, v.1-4

Song: O The Deep, Deep Love of Jesus – Hymn 535 v.1-3

    New Testament Lesson: Romans 7:15-25

Confession of Sin: From Psalm 106 and 79

Pastor: We have sinned like our fathers.
People: We have committed iniquity, we have behaved wickedly.
Pastor: Our fathers in Egypt did not understand Your wonders.
People: They did not remember Your abundant kindnesses.
Pastor: They rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea.
People: Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of Your name.
All: Deliver us and forgive our sins for Your name’s sake.

Assurance of Pardon: 1 John 2:12

    Song: Abide With Me – CCLI# 43190

Abide with me: fast falls the eventide; the darkness deepens, Lord with me abide
When other helpers fail and comforts flee, help of the helpless, abide with me.

Thou on my head in early youth didst smile; And though rebellious, and perverse meanwhile
Thou hast not left me, though I oft left thee, On to the close, Lord, abide with me.

I need Thy presence every passing hour; what but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s pow’r?
Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, abide with me.

I fear no foe with Thee at hand to bless; ills have no weight, tears lose their bitterness
Where is thy sting death? Where grave thy victory? I triumph still, abide with me

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes; shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies
Heav’n’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee; in life in death, abide with me.

Scripture Reading and Prayer for the Church:
Dr. Michael Calvert, Teaching Elder – Matthew 23:1-12

Preaching of the Word: Dr. Michael Calvert, Teaching Elder
“A Blessing for Those Who Endure” – James 1:12

    Communion*:

Song: Hark! The Voice of Love and Mercy – CCLI# 2793362

Hark, the voice of love and mercy, sounds aloud from Calvary!
See it rends the rocks asunder; shakes the earth and veils the sky!
“It is finished, it is finished,” hear the dying Savior cry.
“It is finished, it is finished,” hear the dying Savior cry.

“It is finished,” o what pleasure do these charming words afford.
Heavenly blessings without measure flow to us from Christ the Lord.
“It is finished, it is finished,” saints the dying words record.
“It is finished, it is finished,” saints the dying words record.

Finished all the types and shadows of the ceremonial law.
Finished all that God had promised, death and hell no more shall awe.
“It is finished, it is finished,” saints from hence your comfort draw.
“It is finished, it is finished,” saints from hence your comfort draw.

Tune your harps anew, ye seraphs, join to sing the pleasing theme
Saints of earth and all in heaven join to praise Immanuel’s name.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Glory to the bleeding lamb!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Glory to the bleeding lamb!

    Benediction: 1 Peter 1:2

May grace and peace be yours in the fullest measure

We are glad to have a friend or neighbor come with you! Several ways our members, guests, and CPC extended families can register:
    1. Stop by the table in the Narthex Sunday and fill out a form.
    2. Download a form on our website; complete and drop in the offering box or the church mailbox.
    3. Fill it out and email a photo of the completed form to Betsy Morgan at bsm7305@yahoo.com so as to hold your spot.
If your child wants a t-shirt, drop a $10 per shirt check into the offering box.
Volunteers Snack Sign-up: As part of VBS, we have around 30 adult and teen volunteers here to help us. THANK YOU! We would like to have a snack area for these volunteers to be able to sneak away and refuel. Tending to 50+ kids is hard work! I am asking four members to drop a snack off each morning for this purpose. Please consider donating a baked good or store-bought good during our week of VBS. Such snacks include granola bars, cookies, fruit or veggie trays, meat tray, chips/dip or crackers, etc. Sign up by clicking HERE.

As always, please add this to your prayer list. It’s a large undertaking, and there are many details yet to be worked out. But, we know that God has gone before us and will provide for our every need! This is all about HIM and pointing our little ones to Christ in every way! I know He will be glorified through our VBS planning and execution!
    Thanks!

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

How would you go about describing the ‘blessed life’?  What are the ingredients necessary to make one’s life truly ‘blessed’?

We might immediately be compelled to describe the ‘blessed life’ as one without difficulty, or one with an abundance of material resources, or a life of good health or inward tranquility. Others might readily think of having children who behave, or at least children who have left the nest and have become responsible adults who are off the parental payroll. A ‘blessed life’ might also be expected to include quickly answered prayers, deliverance from some affliction, or victory over a besetting sin.  Now, if this is the way you think then you are certainly in good company, for we are all prone to define the ‘blessed life’ in such terms as these.

But what if we’re wrong?  What if the truly ‘blessed life’ is really not about these things at all? Could it be that—with help from the Word of God—we need to seriously rethink how we define what a ‘blessed life’ actually is?

This coming Lord’s Day we are going to discover from the pages of Holy Scripture that the person who is truly “blessed” of God is the one who “remains steadfast under trial”–James 1:12.  That is, the one who is most “blessed,” as far as our loving Heavenly Father is concerned, is the one who is facing adversity, and yet endures!  Wow . . . that’s pretty crazy!  Or is it?

Our sermon this week will come from James 1:12, and in it we will explore this eternal truth that totally reshapes our view of the ‘blessed life’ we all desire!

Special Offering for the New Parking Extension

Please prayerfully consider making a special offering to help fund our New Parking Extension.  Our Deacons have done a most wonderful job of anticipating our current needs and planning for the future. This addition will make it so much easier for us to accommodate our worshippers, and we appreciate how our Deaconate has faithfully addressed our present needs and led us to prepare for the days ahead.  As you seek the Lord and He leads you to give, you may simply mark ‘Construction’ or ‘Parking Extension’ on your check.

    Speaking of Our Deacons . . .

On behalf of each of our Active Deacons, let me say that these dear brothers are most ready and willing to serve you in any way they can.  Should you have a practical need, or know of a member in need, the Deacons are at the ready to assist.  Please simply contact our Chairman, Phillip Jones, or speak to any of our Deacons.  They love you and are here to serve Christ by serving you. Thank you brothers for all that you do!

Have a most restful weekend, and I’ll see you Sunday morning!

    In His great love,

    Mike

  • Order of Worship – June 19 2016

    Call to Worship: Isaiah 65:24

    Prayer of Adoration:

    Old Testament Lesson: Genesis 22:9-18

Confession of Faith: The Heidelberg Catechism

Q 2. How many things are necessary for you to know, that in this comfort you may live and die happily?
    A. Three things First, the greatness of my sin and misery. Second, how I am redeemed from all my sins and misery. Third, how I am to be thankful to God for such redemption.

Song: Take My Life And Let It Be – Hymn 585 v1,2,5,6

Song: Come Ye Souls By Sin Afflicted – CCLI# 2263115

    Come ye souls by sin afflicted, Bowed with fruitless sorrow down;
    By the broken law convicted, through the cross, behold the crown;
    Look to Jesus; Look to Jesus; Look to Jesus;
    Mercy flows through Him alone.

Take His easy yoke and wear it; Love will make your obedience sweet
Christ will give you strength to bear it, while His grace shall guide your feet
Safe to glory, Safe to glory, Safe to glory,
    Where His ransomed captives meet.

    Blessed are the eyes that see Him, Blest the ears that hear His voice;
    Blessed are the souls that trust Him, And in Him alone rejoice;
His commandments, His commandments, His commandments
    Then become their happy choice.

Sweet as home to pilgrims weary, Light to newly, opened eyes,
    Like full springs in deserts dreary, Is the rest the cross supplies;
All who taste it, All who taste it, All who taste it
    Shall to rest immortal rise.

    Look to Jesus; Look to Jesus; Look to Jesus;
    Mercy flows through Him alone.

    New Testament Lesson: Romans 7:1-6

Confession of Sin and The Lord’s Prayer:

    Assurance of Pardon: Colossians 1:22

Song: How Deep, the Father’s Love For Us – CCLI #1558110

How deep the Father’s love for us, how vast beyond all measure
That he should give his only son, to make a wretch his treasure
How great the pain of searing loss, the Father turned his face away
As wounds which mar the chosen one bring many sons to glory

Behold the man upon a cross, my sin upon his shoulders
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice call out among the scoffers
It was my sin that held him there until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life; I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything: no gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ; his death and resurrection
Why should I gain from his reward? I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart: his wounds have paid my ransom

Scripture Reading and Prayer for the Church:
Dr. Michael Calvert, Teaching Elder – Matthew 22:23-46

Preaching of the Word: Dr. Michael Calvert, Teaching Elder
“Poor Man, Rich Man, and the Wisdom of God, Part Two” – James 1:9-11

    Communion*:

Song: Come Thou Fount – Hymn 457 v.1-3

    Benediction: Hebrews 13:25

    Grace be with you all

  • VBS Registration & Teen Volunteer Needs

    Church family,

    VBS Registration going on NOW
We are currently registering our kids for VBS – this is any child who has completed pre-K (4 yr old class). If you are able to volunteer, we will have a nursery available to you for 3 yrs and under. It looks as though we have some availability for friends to join us, so please invite a friend (or your own families, if local). At the bottom of this email is a blurb you can copy/paste into a new email and forward to friends.
Several ways our members, guests, and CPC extended families can register:
    1. Stop by the table in the Narthex Sunday and fill out a form.
    2. Download a form on our website; complete and drop in the offering box or the church mailbox.

If your child wants a t-shirt, drop a $10 per shirt check into the offering box.
It is key that we know by June 26th so that we can place our t-shirt order, our materials order, AND group children into age classes.
    Teen Volunteers Needed

As part of the VBS experience, kids are placed in groups of 3-4 with a teen helper or “royal helper,” as we are calling them this week! 🙂 If your pre-teen or teen can help us to usher our small groups around, please email me at aoturnbull@gmail.com I still need a few more (girls or boys) who can commit to a volunteer meeting and the three days of VBS.
All of our volunteers have such a great role in all of this – building relationships with all of our covenant children! Lord-willing, He will create a neat bond between teen and child; one that can last for all of their time at Christ Pres.
    Thanks!
    Ashley

    Call to Worship: Isaiah 55:1

    Prayer of Adoration:

    Old Testament Lesson: Genesis 22:1-8

Confession of Faith: The Heidelberg Catechism

Q 1. What is your only comfort in life and in death?

    A. That I, with body and soul, both in life and in death, am not my own, but belong to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ, who with His precious blood has fully satisfied for all my sins, and redeemed me from all the power of the devil; and so preserves me that without the will of my Father in heaven not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, that all things must work together for my salvation.

Song: What Wondrous Love Is This? – Hymn 261 v.1-3

Song: How Sweet to Wait Upon the Lord – CCLI#5543210

How sweet to wait upon the Lord, while He fulfills His gracious word
To seek His face, and not in vain, to be so loved, and love again

CHORUS: Amen! Our heart with rapture cry, may we with reverence look so high
Ascended savior, fix our eyes, by faith upon this glorious prize

With this delightful prospect fired, we’ll run, nor in thy ways be tired
And all the trials here we see, will make us long to reign with Thee

To see, while prostrate at His feet, Jehovah on the mercy seat
And Jesus, at the Lord’s right hand, with His divine atonement stand!

“Father” he cries, “I will that these before thee on their bended knees
for who my life I once laid down, be with me soon on this my throne.”

    New Testament Lesson: Romans 6:12-18

    Corporate Confession of Sin:

Pastor: Almighty and merciful God, we have erred and strayed from Your ways like lost sheep.
People: We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts.
Pastor: We have offended against Your holy laws.
People: We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; and we have done those things which we ought not to have done.
Pastor: O Lord, have mercy upon us. Spare those who confess their faults.
People: Restore those who are penitent, according to Your promises declared to the world in Christ Jesus, our Lord.
All: And grant, O merciful God, for His sake, that we may live a holy, just, and humble life to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

    Assurance of Pardon: Ephesians 2:13

Song: We Shall Feast in the House of Zion – CCLI #7041364

    CHORUS:
We will feast in the house of Zion, we will sing with our hearts restored
“He has done great things” we will say together
we will feast and weep no more

We will not be burned by the fire; He is the Lord our God
We are not consumed by the flood; upheld, protected, gathered up

In the dark of night before the dawn, my soul be not afraid
For the promised morning, oh how long! O God of Jacob, be my strength

Every vow we’ve broken and betrayed, You are the faithful One
And from the garden to the grave, bind us together, bring shalom

Song: All Creatures of Our God and King – Hymn 115 v.1-2,5

Song: To Thee I Come – CCLI #5445851

To thee I come, a sinner poor, and wait for mercy at thy door
Indeed I’ve nowhere else to flee, Oh God be merciful to me!
To thee I come, a sinner weak, and scarce know how to pray or speak
From fear and weakness set me free, Oh God be merciful to me!

To thee I come, a sinner vile, upon me Lord vouchsafe to smile
Mercy through blood, I make my plea, Oh God be merciful to me!
To thee I come, a sinner great, and well thou knowest all my state
Yet full forgiveness is with thee, Oh God be merciful to me!

To thee I come, a sinner lost, nor have I aught wherein to trust
But where thou art, Lord I would be, Oh God be merciful to me!
To glory bring me Lord at last, and then when all my sins are passed

  • Announcements – June 3 2016

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

For the next two Sundays it will be our joy to have our pulpit filled by two of our dear brothers and ministry colleagues.  This coming Sunday, Rev. Jim Daughtry will be preaching.  And then on June 12, Rev. Jeff Hamm will deliver the message.  As you know, both of these brothers and their sweet families are part of our Church fellowship. What an honor it is to have two gifted PCA Teaching Elders among us!  Jim and Jeff will be filling our pulpit while I am away on vacation from today through June 18. I will be back in the pulpit on June 19, and we will resume our studies in the Epistle of James.

While we are away I am hoping to engage in the discipline of ‘unplugging’ as much as I possibly can. Perhaps like many of you, I also sense a deep need to disconnect for a season from all of those devices that, for good or ill, flood our hearts and minds with information. In our age there is such a powerful tendency to become technology-dependent, even to the point of addiction. So, for the next couple of weeks I am going turn off the devices and allow the quietness and slower pace of life to do its work in my soul. I am so grateful for your encouragement to do this, and for the opportunity you graciously provide for us to rest and recharge. And thank you in advance for your prayers for us as we are away. We simply don’t have the proper words to express our gratitude for your love and prayerful support!  As I have often said, I cannot possibly imagine a pastor who is more blessed than I am!  You are my joy, and I love you all with all my heart!

Please pray most fervently for Jim and Jeff as they deliver God’s Word. I know you will be greatly blessed through them and the eternal message the Lord has laid upon their hearts.

    In His abundant grace,

    Mike
