    Sermon Preview

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This coming Lord’s Day morning we will arrive at the last two verses of the Epistle of James.  And in the rather abrupt style that we have come to expect from him, the brother of our Savior ends his letter with what is at once a rather ominous word, but also a note of comfort and hope. In 5:19-20 he says, “My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

Here James suggests that it is possible for “anyone” within the fellowship of the Church to wander away from “the truth.” We have all experienced this to one degree or another; that slow drift away from the Word of God and the way of life demanded of those who belong to Jesus. The cause of such wandering is multifaceted. It may be due to neglect of the Christian disciplines of prayer, corporate worship, and the study of the Word. It may also be attributable to the experience of temptation, or various tribulations that deplete our strength and the resolve to fight the good fight of faith.  Another cause of spiritual drifting is setting our affections on things of the world.  We move away from Christ, His Word, and His body (the Church) when we are seduced by the siren calls and devilishly alluring beauty of this world. But whatever the cause, James informs us that such wandering is serious business.  Spiritual life and death are in the balance (v. 20), and this means that there is no trivial drifting.

But the good news is that there is a way back, and we each have a part to play in the recovery of the wanderer. And added to this blessedly good news, there is a profound promise awaiting the one who returns to the truth through the pathway of contrition and faith.

Let’s all take time to read and prayerfully mediate upon these words, and then ask the Lord to speak powerfully to us this Sunday.

Before I go, let me tell you about this year’s celebration of Easter. Of course, Easter Sunday is April 16, but our celebration begins with Palm Sunday April 9, then continues with our Maundy ThursdayService April 13 at 6:00 PM, and our Good Friday Service April 14 at 6:00 PM.  This year we will be tracing our Lord’s story from the cross to the empty through the lens of Mark’s gospel.

I love you all so dearly, and pray for you always,

    Mike

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

For the last several weeks we have been following along with James as he has addressed the subject of prayer (James 5:13-15).  On this coming Lord’s Day we will arrive at the final section of the fifth chapter where James seeks to bring his teachings on this subject to a conclusion (5:16-18).

We remember how he has already addressed the situation of believers who are in need, and especially those who are seriously ill. And he has explained how prayers should be offered for those who are in distress with the full expectation that God will answer them according to His will (5:13-15). In the verses we will consider this week, James takes this subject of prayer further as he seeks to impress upon us the great privilege and responsibility of praying to our Father—to the “Father of lights” who delights in giving good gifts to those who love His Son (1:17).

In James 5:16-18, our Lord’s brother offers us a magnificent promise concerning prayer. And again, the purpose is to supply the encouragement we all need for a life of faithful praying and intercession. The promise he offers is this: “The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working” (v. 16).  Then, to illustrate this promise, James appeals to the prayers of the Old Testament prophet “Elijah” (vv. 16-18).

Let me encourage you to become familiar with Elijah’s amazing story. You’ll find the details in 1Kings 17-18.  And as you read, keep in mind that, according to James, the great Elijah was just “a man with a nature like ours” (v. 17).

    Called Meeting of the Congregation

Just another reminder that we will have a very brief meeting of the congregation immediately following our worship service this week.  After the benediction, there will be a short recess so that we may dismiss our guests. Then, we will reconvene in order to hear a report from our Session. Our nursery workers will remain in place so that parents may attend this short meeting.

Have a blessed weekend, and I’ll see you Sunday!

    With His love,

    Mike

To run this as smoothly as possible, we would like each team to have a lead.  Presently, we have 3 individuals who are lead to lead a team and another 7 willing to serve on an Usher/Greater team.  This is open to all, but would prefer no one younger high school age.

    Sermon Preview

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

In Matthew 6:9, our Lord Jesus says, “Pray then like this” (ESV).

Of course, you immediately recognize this passage as the place where Jesus teaches the disciples how to pray. And this is that most familiar and beloved part of the Sermon on the Mount we call the ‘Lord’s Prayer.’ On Sunday we will consider this passage in view of our recent studies in the Epistle of James, and most importantly chapter 5 of James where the Lord’s brother also speaks of prayer.

You will remember that last week we examined that controversial passage where James calls upon those who are seriously ill to summon the elders of the Church, who should then come to their side and pray for their deliverance from affliction (5:14-15). And in that larger section of the epistle (5:7-18), James refers to prayer no less than 7 times, which is equal to the number of times he refers to suffering. His purpose is to promote fervent and faithful prayer among God’s people.

But before we look at the balance of James 5, we will journey once more to the model prayer of Matthew 6 to see what else we may learn from the older brother of James that will assist and encourage us in our praying.

As you prepare for worship, take some time to read once again the inspired words of our Lord in Matthew 6:1-13.

I love you all with all my heart!

    Mike

New Adult Sunday School Class Begins This Sunday:
For the Spring Adult Sunday School semester beginning on March 19, we will be studying the Doctrines of Grace, also known as ‘Calvinism.’ Calvinism is the Biblical teaching that we are saved in a monergistic, God-centered way, i.e. God alone accomplishes the salvation of his elect, without any help from man. In contrast, ‘Arminianism’ is the understanding that man cooperates with God in salvation; its chief presupposition being a belief in the autonomous free will of man that Calvinism rejects. In the course of our study we will investigate the TULIP acronym that includes Total depravity, Unconditional election, Limited atonement, Irresistible grace, and Perseverance of the saints.

The book we will be using is entitled For Calvinism by Dr. Michael Horton.  Here’s the Amazon link:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

This coming Lord’s Day we will continue our look at James 5:13-15. In this section of his letter, James is addressing the believer’s life from two broad categories of experience. As we discovered last week, there are times of suffering and times of cheer.  And in both of these seasons of life believers are to cast their hearts heavenward in prayer and song (v. 13).

Then, in verses 14-15 James speaks of a specific kind of suffering that may befall a member of the body of Christ. In verse 14 he asks, “Is anyone among you sick?” And he has in mind a very serious illness, one that leaves the sufferer bedridden. To such an afflicted one the instructions are, “Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.” Then, James declares that, “the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven” (v. 15).

New Testament scholars tell us that this is one of the most controversial passages in James, and perhaps, even in the whole New Testament.  On Sunday, we will ask the Lord to teach us from these inspired verses, and we will trust that His blessed Word will never return void.

New Adult Sunday School Class Begins Next Sunday:

    Greeter/Usher Ministry:
Christ Presbyterian is growing and is now in need of Usher/Greeters. Our initial plan is to have 4-6 teams with 7 people in each team to accomplish this new requirement. The reason for having many teams is to allow more of us who have been called to serve at Christ Pres the opportunity to serve while not overburdening anyone.  Each team would only have to serve 2 weeks a quarter.  The initial plan is to have 3 greeters and 4 ushers per week serving each Sunday from 10:10 to 10:40.  If we have the numbers willing to assist, we can have each team serve for a two week rotation. To run this as smoothly as possible, we would like each team to have a lead.  Presently, we have 3 individuals who are lead to lead a team and another 7 willing to serve on an Usher/Greater team.  This is open to all, but would prefer no one younger high school age.

If you are interested in helping with this important ministry, please contact Steve Profozich at steveprofozich@gmail.com. Please get in touch with him soon, as we would like to move forward with this starting March 10. Thanks.

    Sermon Preview

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

In James 5:13 we find these words: “Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise.”

Here at the end of his inspired epistle, we see that James has categorized our lives under two broad headings. While not simplistic, it is a simple way to think about and to look at the whole of our existence. There are times of sorrow and difficulty—experiences of “suffering.” And then, there are times of happiness and joy—experiences that we classify as “cheerful.”

Every child of God has known these two life-conditions.  Even as you read these words, you are in one of these seasons (perhaps you are experiencing a combination of both!).  However, you’re in great company, for we cannot name one saint in the Bible who did not walk on these two pathways, perhaps going back and forth between the two with an almost predictable regularity—sorrow and joy, pain and deliverance, adversity and prosperity, debilitating fear and supernatural peace, doubt and assurance, despair and radiant hope. This rhythm, the perpetual movement between these two opposites, is what life is made of for all of us!

On Sunday as we gather together to hear the Lord’s Word for us, James will teach us 1) that we have a faithful and loving Father for all seasons, and 2) that we also have a corresponding responsibility in the two broad conditions of life. We must always “pray,” and we must always “sing”!

I can’t wait to pray and to sing with you on the Lord’s Day!

    All my love in Christ,

    Mike

It’s also a chance for us to fellowship! If you didn’t make it last week, it’s not too late.
