Dear Brothers and Sisters in our Lord,

I trust that by now you have all enjoyed a wonderful time of giving thanks for the bounty of spiritual and material blessings that we have been granted by our Heavenly Father. I know that many of you are on the road and will be traveling home over the weekend. We pray that you will be safe on your way back, and refreshed by the days away from the weekly routine.

This coming Lord’s Day we will once again consider the remarkable story of Gideon, which we discover in Judges 6. Our sermon will come from Judges 6:25-27 where we uncover the one last thing that Gideon must do before he becomes Israel’s savior and delivers the Covenant people from the tyranny of the Midianites. As the Lord explicitly commands, Gideon must go and destroy his father’s idols. He must smash the “altar to Baal” and “cut down the Asherah that is beside it” (v. 25). And then, with these pagan deities in ruins, Gideon must reclaim that spot for Yahweh by constructing “an altar to the Lord your God” (v. 26).

As you can already anticipate, this Old Testament passage sets forth some profound challenges for us as the Lord’s New Covenant people. As we prepare for Sunday, let’s carefully study the whole scene as it is presented in 6:17-32.

On Behalf of our Church family, I want to express my appreciation for Cliff Smith who has led us in a wonderful study of Reformation Church History in our Adult Sunday School Class. We have learned so much about that event called the ‘Protestant Reformation,’ and about who we are and how we got here as Reformed Christians. Our final lesson on this subject will be this Sunday as Cliff will wrap up our fascinating look at the history of the New Testament Church.

Next Sunday, December 3, the Session will be conducting an Informational Meeting during the Sunday School hour for our Adults. We want to share some very exciting news with you, and give you a look at some of the future plans that we have been prayerfully considering. Then, on December 10 and 17, I will be teaching a two-part Sunday School lesson on the Doctrine of the IncarnationThere will be no Sunday School on December 24 or 31.

Finally, Advent begins next Sunday! Our Advent Sermon Series for this year will be entitled “Who Said What About Jesus?” The sermon texts and titles for each Sunday of Advent are:

    December 3, “What Mary Said”–Luke 1:34, 38, 46-55

December 10, “What the Heavenly Host Said”–Luke 2:13-14

    December 17–“What Simeon Said”–Luke 2:21-35

December 24, “What the Chief Priests and Scribes Said” –Matthew 2:4-6

December 24, Christmas Eve Service of Worship (5:00 PM), “What Herod Said”–Matthew 2:8.

May our Lord bless you with a restful holiday weekend, and I can’t wait to see you on Sunday!

All my love for each of you in Christ Jesus our Lord,

    Mike

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

As we have been considering the life and times of Gideon, I’m sure we have all shared the experience of meeting ourselves in his story. As we discovered last Lord’s Day, Gideon, the one chosen by God to deliver his people from the oppression of the Midianites, was very much like the nation he was to save. He was, as the narrative of chapters 6 and 7 of the Book of Judges will make clear, a sinner for sure.  Gideon’s weaknesses are particularly revealed in his reply to “the angel of the Lord” who summons him into the service of the Covenant people.  The “angel,” who is Yahweh Himself, provides Gideon with the magnificent promise that “the Lord is with you” (6:12), and further guarantees that by means of the power of God he will “defeat Midian as one man” (6:16). Verse 13, however, reveals Gideon’s verbal response to this divine Word of assurance:

“Please, my lord, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all his wonderful deeds that our fathers recounted to us, saying, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the Lord has forsaken us and given us into the hand of Midian.”

We could rephrase Gideon’s questions this way: ‘Where were you, Lord, when the Midianites came and destroyed our land, flocks, homes, and crops?  Do You not care about Your people? Why have You permitted these awful things to happen to us? Are You unable to help us?  Are You unaware of our suffering? Why have You abandoned us?’

I would imagine that we have all raised such questions heavenward, if not openly, at least in our hearts. Gideon is wrestling with something that we all deal with at one time or another. Theologians and philosophers call it ‘the problem of evil.’ Why would our good, and gracious, and great God allow such terrible things to occur in the lives of His own redeemed people?  This is Gideon’s essential question, and it is the very one that often haunts us today.

On Sunday we will explore this interesting and informative interchange between Gideon and the Lord that we discover in Judges 6:13-24.  As always, let’s prepare for worship by spending some time reading and meditating on our sermon passage, and then by praying that the Lord will open our eyes and hearts to the wonder and glory of His Holy Word.

    A Special Fellowship Opportunity

Before I go, I want to tell you about a special fellowship opportunity that we have coming up on December 3.  You may know that we are now scheduling a quarterly Visitor’s Lunch at the home of Rich and Christina Bagdazian following Sunday worship. Beloved Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

In Exodus 34, something most amazing happened to Moses and to the nation of Israel.  You will remember that at Mount Sinai the Covenant people had fallen into idolatry with the construction of the golden calf (Exodus 32:1-6), and that in angry response to this incomprehensible act of spiritual treason, Moses shattered the original stone tablets upon which the Ten Commandants had been inscribed by the very finger of God (32:19). Then, after a time of fervent intercession for the wayward people and the re-issuing of the Decalogue (34:1-4), Moses encountered the Lord Himself in a glorious cloud-theophany (34:5-7):

The Lord descended in the cloud and stood there with him as he called upon the name of the Lord. Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth; who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.”

What is truly remarkable about this appearance of the Lord, and His self-description, is His claim to be “compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness.”  The true meaning of these blessed terms, however, cannot be discovered in a dictionary or lexicon.  In order to know what compassion, grace, patience, and kindness are (when used in reference to God) we must consider what He has done and is doing.

In the context of Exodus 34, these characteristics of the Lord are witnessed in the fact that He did not destroy those who had been unfaithful to Him! He did not give them what their sins deserved.  He preserved them. He withheld His hand of judgment. He gave them yet another chance. He did not abandon them. And, most critically, He remained true to His Covenant promises despite His people’s faithlessness!

Another dramatic example of this is found in the Old Testament account of Gideon. In Judges 6 we are introduced to his amazing story. And like the events of Exodus 34, it is also one of sin, rebellion, treason, and idolatry. But we are also given another demonstration of the character of our God, and most importantly, His grace, compassion, kindness, and covenant-mercies.

So far in our sermons on Gideon, we have seen what the people have done in the sight of the Lord. They have embraced the idolatrous ways of the Canaanites (6:1-10). God’s own people have become like the lost world around them in their behavior and attitudes.  As a consequence, they are suffering under the hand of God’s Fatherly discipline (6:1-6).  But, the Lord does not abandon them! Again, the sinful people do not get what their sins deserve! Rather, the Lord once more sends them His Word through the prophet (6:8-10), and then raises up another leader and savior (6:11-12)!

Ultimately, the call and ministry of Gideon foreshadows the ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ. For it is in the act of sending Christ Jesus that God’s compassion, grace, patience, and kindness are most powerfully revealed. And this makes it all the more important that we understand and apply the Gideon story correctly.

Sunday’s message will be from Judges 6:11-24, with special focus upon verses 11-12. Take some time this weekend to read the entire sixth chapter, and then let’s pray that when we come together in worship, the Word of the Lord will instruct and richly bless us, and that we will see and more fully understand the One who has saved us in His Beloved Son.

I love you all so much!

    Mike

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Perhaps you’ve had this experience. You are at your favorite restaurant, anticipating a scrumptious meal, your favorite of all. You order it. The 9-ounce filet mignon, medium-well, with baked potato and green beans. Your stomach growls, and your taste buds are at full alert as you mentally rehearse the flavor of this succulent dish. But when the server finally delivers it, you discover that he has brought you spaghetti and meatballs instead!  Not what you ordered! Not what you ‘needed’! You’re disappointed and surprised, to say the least!

Well, if you can relate to that experience, then you know how the ancient Israelites must have felt during that most tumultuous period of the Judges.  In Judges 6:1-6 we learn of the awful conditions that the Israelites endured as they lived in the ‘Land of Promise’ among their enemies, the Canaanites.  The Israelites had once again done “what was evil in the sight of the Lord” (v. 1). And, as a consequence of their rebellion, “the Lord gave them into the hand of Midian [aka ‘Canaanites’] seven years” (v. 1).  It was a ghastly experience for the Covenant nation!  Their terrible afflictions, which came directly from the hand of Yahweh, brought them “very low,” and they desperately “cried out for help to the Lord” (v. 6).

Clearly, their anxious cries for help from Yahweh anticipated an immediate deliverance from their pains and tribulations. It was assumed to be axiomatic: ‘We pray. Then God gives us what we want, what we need, right now.’  However, a funny thing happened on the way to their recovery. Rather than sending relief in the form of another powerful warrior-judge who would beat back those pesky Canaanites, “the Lord sent a prophet to the people of Israel” (v. 8).  They had ordered the fillet mignon. But the divine ‘Waiter’ delivered the spaghetti and meatballs!!  They requested a fighter, a man of ruthless power and military prowess. But the Lord delivered a preacher, ‘armed’ only with the Word of Yahweh!  What gives?  What did this mean? And, more importantly for us, what does it mean?

On Sunday we will look carefully at the events recorded in Judges 6:7-10, and we will see that there is a very important lesson for us today.  So before we gather for worship and the ministry of the Word, re-familiarize yourself with the storyline from Judges 6:1-10. And then let’s all pray that we will understand why it is that sometimes the Lord does not give us what we’ve ordered, or what we think we need. And this is what proves that He loves us!

Also, remember to set your clocks back one hour on Saturday night! It is that blessed time of the year when we ‘fall back’!

I love you all so very much!

    Mike
