Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

Over the last few weeks in our series of messages on the ‘Great Events in the History of Redemption,’ we have reacquainted ourselves with the (in)famous man named Samson. And we have studied him in a much different light than many of us have considered him before. We have certainly witnessed the good, the bad, and the ugly of Samson’s life as it has been splashed unfiltered before our eyes in the Old Testament book of Judges.

Samson, the strongest man on earth, was Israel’s final judge. But, spiritually speaking—and even militarily and politically—he was the very worst and weakest judge of all! The spiritual life of Israel and that of Samson tragically paralleled one another on downward trajectories, ever descending into the abyss of wholesale rebellion against the Lord God. Rather than saving Israel from the oppressive hand of the Philistines, which was Samson’s original mission, he pursued his own gratification. In direct disobedience to the commands of the Lord God, He sought immoral relationships with non-Israelite women, driven by an insatiable lust that would sacrifice literally everything for its carnal gratification. Like the people of the nation, He always did what he considered right in his own eyes, caring nothing for the commandments of Yahweh or the spiritual needs of those whom he was called to represent and deliver.

Well, this coming Lord’s Day morning we are going to trace the developments of Samson’s life as it comes to its spectacular and rather ignoble end. And, of course, this final act in his life is one of the more well-known episodes from Old Testament history. You will find it recorded in Judges 16:23-31. As we look carefully at this passage, we will ask the Lord to teach us the vital spiritual lessons that Samson’s tragic life embodied.

Before I sign off, let me say a special word of appreciation for my dear brothers, Rev. Jim Daughtry and Matthew Elliott. Thank you Jim for so powerfully preaching the Word for us in my absence last Sunday. And thank you Matthew for leading our Adult Sunday School Class in such a vital lesson on how to care for those who are struggling with ‘spiritual depression.’ We are a blessed Church indeed!

I love you all so very much!

    Mike

She gave me a very special Christmas present this year—tickets to an out of town concert (some of you will remember Steven Curtis Chapman). Please pray for Jim as he delivers the Word of the Lord, and take some time before Sunday to prepare your heart for worship by reflecting upon this great Psalm of David.

Also on SundayMatthew Elliott will be teaching our Adult Sunday School Class. He will be speaking on the subject of how the body of Christ can assist those who are dealing with ‘spiritual depression.’ Matthew will continue this important topic on February 25.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ our Lord,

When I say the name “Samson” what, or who, do you immediately think of next? Well, what automatically rolls of my tongue (and probably yours as well) is the name “Delilah.” Samson and Delilah! They just fit together. And, indeed, these two names are forever linked in history and in our minds!

This coming Lord’s Day morning we are going to explore their story, and why it is that these two names and lives are so connected. You will find all of the tragic details of their relationship (and the terrible consequences resulting for Samson and the people of God) recorded in Judges 16:1-22. And if you haven’t read this passage in a while, I would encourage you to reacquaint yourself with this part of Samson’s life as it prepares us for what transpires in 16:23-31.

Also on Sunday, we will have a wonderful opportunity for fellowship as we officially welcome Mathew and Meg Elliott to our Church family. There will be a ‘Meet and Greet’ for them from 3:00 to 5:00 PM this Sunday afternoon at the Church in the fellowship area. We are so very thrilled to have Matthew as our Pastoral Assistant for Counseling, and I know you will want to come and meet him and share words of encouragement as he and Meg begin their ministry with us.

I love you all more than I can express, and I pray for you always!

    See you Sunday!

    Mike

    Sermon Preview

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This coming Lord’s Day morning we will be considering (for the third time) the life and exploits of that most famous Biblical character named “Samson.” Our text will be Judges 14:1-19 with a special focus upon verses 1-4.

I suspect that we would all confess that we’ve learned some things about this man that we didn’t know to be true, and that his life’s story has been set before us in a different light than we have previously observed. I can tell you that for such a long period of my own life, what I knew about this man was fragmentary. He was really strong! He killed a whole bunch of Philistines with the jaw bone of a donkey (15:15). He got involved with a woman named “Delilah” who tricked him into giving up his secret. And then, he met his end at the temple of Dagon as he, literally, ‘brought the house down,’ and killed more of Yahweh’s enemies in this act of self-sacrifice than he did in all of the pervious twenty years he judged Israel (16:30).

But, as we are now seeing, there is much more to this man than this! And his story and his place in the history of God’s Old Covenant people is very important and somewhat complicated! As we have said before, there is much to learn from him and from God’s dealings with His persistently rebellious people at this stage of their history.

So far, we have discovered that things were really bad by the time Samson came on the stage. And we have also learned that Samson’s appearance itself was most unusual. He was called to be the savior of his people while in his mother’s womb. And his unnamed mother had been unable to have any children until the angel of the Lord appeared to her and announced that she would give birth to a son. And she would give birth not just to any little boy, but to one who would “begin to save” the Israelites “from the hand of the Philistines” (13:5). And then we remember how the Spirit of God came over Samson, and began to “stir him,” moving and empowering him to do the Lord’s bidding (13:25).

And here is precisely where the problem is for us. Over and again in the inspired record of his adventures, we are told that Samson was empowered and directed by the Holy Spirit. And yet, in these 4 chapters of Judges (13-16) he looks like anything but a man full of and led by the Spirit of the Lord! There is tension abounding in the life of Samson!

That tension reaches its full magnitude in 14:4 where we are given a piece of inside information about Samson that serves as the key truth regarding his whole life. According to this verse, all that Samson did, even in his willful defiance of the commands of the divine Word, was “from the Lord”! What a perplexing claim! Even in his sinning, Samson was accomplishing the will and purposes of Yahweh! Here we encounter the incomprehensible mystery of divine providence, and a truth that will not only confound us initially, but will comfort us ultimately, and point us to the cross of our blessed Savior and Lord!

I can’t wait to explore this passage with you, and I look forward to seeing you on the Lord’s Day as we joyfully come together in His Wonderful Name!

    Much love and many prayers,

    Mike
