Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

It is so good to be back with you after some blessed days off.  Thank you for your kind prayers for us as we were away on vacation. We feel refreshed and rested, both physically and spiritually.

I want to especially express my deep appreciation for Rev. Jim Daughtry who so skillfully filled our pulpit for us the last two Sundays.  So many of you have reported to me how you were richly fed by Jim’s preaching.  Thank you dear brother for being available, and for being used of the Lord in such a wonderful way. One of the most treasured blessings a pastor can have is the assurance that while he is away, both the pulpit and the people are in good hands! We love you and Sharon and your dear family, and it is such an honor to have you among us!

This coming Lord’s Day we will resume our messages from the Epistle to the Colossians. Our text will be Colossians 1:13-14.  In these two verses Paul tells us about our salvation, and, more particularly, about what God has already accomplished for us in Christ His Beloved Son.  You may remember that the Bible speaks of our salvation in three ways: 1) what our Father has done, once and for all; 2) what our Father, through the Holy Spirit, is doing now; and 3) what our Father is yet to do for us in the future.

In this passage, Paul’s chief interest is in what has already been done for us. Namely, the Father has delivered us from darkness, transferred us into the kingdom of His Son, redeemed us, and forgiven us of all our sins. On Sunday we will explore these ‘once-for-all’ blessings that we all share in our Savior and Lord.

    Meet Our Missionaries: Part Two

On Sunday morning, July 15, it will be our great joy to have Seth and Jessica Lewis with us, our missionaries serving in Ireland.  There will be a fellowship with them and their family at 9:15 AM that Sunday morning in our fellowship area.  And then we will hear a report from Seth in our morning worship service.

    Pray for VBS—July 16-19

I wonder how many of us who are adults came into the Kingdom of God through Vacation Bible School.  I have nothing but fond memories and sincere gratitude as I recall my childhood years attending VBS in our church each summer.  Ours will be Monday July 16 through Thursday July 19 from 9:00-11:30 AM each day.  Please join me in fervent prayer for Ashley Turnbull, our Children’s Ministry Coordinator, and her team of teachers and helpers who are preparing for this important week in the life of our children and our whole church family.

I love you all so very much, and I can’t wait to see you on the Lord’s Day!

    Mike

NOTE: This announcement earlier indicated that it was for men’s ministry only; actually everyone is encouraged to participate. Recitation can be individual, or together in a group or family. If desired, you may give a reason for picking your specific Psalm before you recite it. Once we’re done sharing God’s word from memory, we’ll share some ice cream in the fellowship hall.
“How sweet are your words to my taste…” Psalm 119:103. We are planning the event for Sunday, August 12 at 4:30pm.

CASA Ministry: The Senior Fellows would like to invite others in the church to join them in forming a ramp building ministry in conjunction with CASA (Care Assurance System for the Aging and Homebound) of Madison County. This organization provides all the necessary building materials—but the need is great for teams of builders of all skill levels to come together whenever possible to offer this much needed service to the homebound. Builds can be done on Saturday mornings and generally take about 3-4 hours. If you would be interested in being a part of this, please attend the one hour informational meeting on Thursday, June 21, at 7:00 pm in the Church House. If you are interested but would be unable to attend the meeting, please contact David O’Neil or Al Bart for more information.

FCA Power Camp Food Needs: Thank you so much for the response to filling food needs at the upcoming FCA camp! Your food donations feed the interns, huddle leaders, coaches, volunteers, and staff the week of camp. It is amazing how many of the younger volunteers work so hard for the reward of a food treat 🙂 (ice cream, little Debbie’s, granola bars, and fruit snacks are some favorites). If you are still interested in dropping food off there are still needs and there is still time! We would love more of the following:

    Root Beer (2 liters)
Ice Cream or Ice Cream Treats
    Ice Cream Toppings
    Granola Bars
    Fruit Snacks
    Cookies, bars, cakes
Veggie or fruit trays with or without dip

Food can be dropped off this Sunday (June 17th…Fathers Day😊), or at anytime during the camp. Camp is held at Hampton Cove Middle School across the street from our church from 8:30am-3:00pm.

Even above food needs, we always need prayers! There is a great group of young huddle leaders, coaches, and staff that such a heart to share the gospel with their young campers. It would be such a blessing to cover them in prayer as they work this summer to serve the Lord! May we do everything in order to please the Lord our Savior above all else!

If you have any questions let me know!

VBS Needs: We are still in need of storytellers for VBS. This involves coming each day for about 1.5 hrs to present a short story to each age group. This is fun and interactive. I had amazing tellers last year, and it is such a blessing for our children and the main method that the gospel theme is presented to them each day. Please email me to volunteer for 1 or more days! This can be men, women, or a young adult. Sign up HERE. There are several needs, so please pray about helping us! We cannot do it without you guys!

    Sermon Preview

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

If we could have listened in on the prayers of the Apostle Paul as he wrestled before the Lord on behalf of those fellow-believers in Christ that he loved so much, what would we have heard? What would he have desired for them? What would he seek the Lord for on their behalf? What did he believe they needed more than anything in all of the world, and more than any other blessing that God might give them?

Well, we don’t have to speculate about this for long, for we have the written record of exactly what Paul so desperately wanted for his brothers and sisters in Christ. We find his prayer preserved for us in Colossians 1:9-12.

As we examine this passage on Sunday, we will identify three major requests that the Apostle mentions in his prayer for the Colossian Christians:

First, Paul prays that they will all be filled with the knowledge of God’s will (v. 9).

Second, he prays that they would all live in a way that pleases the Lord (v. 10).

Third, Paul prays that they would all be divinely strengthened for endurance and patience (vv. 11-12).

But, because this is the living and abiding Word of God, what Paul desired in prayer for those believers serving the Lord in Colossae two-thousand years ago is also an inspired list of things that we need today! Here is an Apostolic prayer for Christ Presbyterian Church and for all of us who are in Christ Jesus!

As always, I eagerly look forward to probing this wonderful Word from God with you this coming Lord’s Day!

    Fellowship With Our Missionaries

Remember that at 9:15 AM this Sunday we will enjoy a wonderful time of fellowship with Dr. Steve and Rita Williams, our missionaries to New Zealand. I hope you can come and meet them and learn more about their ministry.

    Vacation Time

From Monday June 11 through Sunday June 24 Carol and I will be away on vacation. In my absence it will once again be our great joy to have Rev. Jim Daughtry preaching for us on June 17 and June 24. Jim will be preaching from John 15:1-11 on both Sundays, and I know you will be richly blessed by his ministry to us. Please keep Jim in your prayers as he prepares to deliver these messages.

I love you all so much and can’t wait to see you on Sunday!

    Mike

FCA Power Camp Food Needs: Hello Church Family! In just a few weeks; June 18th-22nd FCA will have its Madison West Power Camp at Hampton Cove Middle School right across the street from our church! Many of our youth have attended this camp and as they get older go back to volunteer and serve in some way. It is neat to see how boldly the interns love on and present the gospel to the 7-13 year olds that attend camp. I get the privilege of being the lunch lady again this year and am looking for help! My favorite part of this camp is working alongside fellow brothers and sisters while serving the kids and staff at camp. We feed about 450-500 people each day for lunch, not to mention the snacks and goodies for the staff and interns. Each year we prep lunch, fill many many cups with Gatorade, serve food, clean up and have a blast doing it! If you are interested in joining us and helping during lunch (10:30-2:00 time frame), or during the family night meal Wednesday June 20th 6:00-9:00 let me know!

I also have a wish list of needs for the camp. If you are interested in providing things from the wish list below drop it by church the next 4 Sundays, or even during the camp. Please label the items dropped off with my name and leave them in the Christ Pres. kitchen. I will put together the dessert and snacks for coaches, staff and interns from what is donated and dropped off by our church. Anything dropped off will be MUCH appreciated!

4-6 gallons of vanilla ice cream
    ice cream Sunday toppings
10- 2 liters of root beer
veggie or fruit trays for coaches and staff each day (such a treat and a blessing for the adults trying to be “good” food wise)
snack items such as granola bars, fruit snacks, muffins, cookies (we need lots and lots of these )
cakes, brownies, bars, or any dessert to be served at lunch for coaches and staff each day

As always we ask for prayers that the hearts of campers would be opened to hearing the Gospel and that lives would be impacted for Christ! If you have any questions don’t hesitate to get in touch with me!

    Thank you,

This can be men, women, or a young adult. Sign up HERE. There are several needs, so please pray about helping us! We cannot do it without you guys!

Senior Fellows June Activities: On Monday, June 25 from 6:30 to 8:00 PM the Senior Fellows will attend Music In The Park at Big Spring International Park (behind the Huntsville Museum of Art) to hear the US Army Materiel Command Bands. Bring chairs, picnic dinner, etc. Meet at the Kennedy Memorial Torch. Bring your spouse, kids, grand-kids and friends.

    Sermon Preview

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

As you know, over the summer months we are preaching through the Epistle to the Colossians, authored by the Apostle Paul while imprisoned in Rome, and delivered to the members of the church in the city of Colossae.  Having introduced the letter in the first two messages, this coming Lord’s Day morning we will begin digging down into the rich soil of this most magnificent Epistle.  Our text will be Colossians 1:3-8.

When we consider this opening paragraph, we can see that the obvious theme of this section of Paul’s letter is thanksgiving.  And having stated his spirit of praise and gratitude to God for his Colossian brethren, Paul sets out the reasons for this attitude of heart.

Now, this is pretty remarkable given the fact that Paul was in prison as he penned this letter! And, furthermore, the Colossian church was facing a grave threat to its very existence!  On the surface, there was, to be sure, cause for alarm!  As we have already discovered, the fellowship of believers in Colossae was under attack from a false teacher who was offering to them a gospel contrary to the truth. It sounded good and “plausible” (2:4), and it had the “appearance of wisdom” (2:23), and by some measures it seemed to offer a better way toward living a disciplined and godly life (2:23).  But this was a most destructive and damning heresy in the eyes of Paul!  So the Epistle has been written as an Apostolic warning to a church square in the bull’s eye of spiritual danger!

And then we learn later in chapter 2 that Paul was not only in prison for the cause of Christ Jesus, but deep in his heart there was a profound “struggle” going on.  In 2:1, he says: “For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you and for those at Laodicea and for all who have not seen me face to face.”  That word translated as “struggle” is our word agony. So Paul himself was clearly alarmed and disturbed as he wrote this inspired letter!

But despite all of this, the Apostle begins his message to them on the note of thanksgiving!  Why would he do this?  Why express gratitude to the Lord beforedealing with the church emergency? Why make thanksgiving his first move?

As we explore this passage on Sunday, I believe the reasons will become very clear. And as they surface, we will be most encouraged in our service of the Kingdom of Christ!

Breakfast with Our Missionaries—Sunday June 10

Next Sunday, June 10, Dr. and Mrs. Steve Williams, our PCA missionaries to New Zealand, will be with us.  At 9:15 AM we will have a time of breakfast and fellowship with Steve and Rita, and hear more about their work in New Zealand. We will meet in the fellowship area. Then, Steve will give us a report from the mission field during our morning service of worship at 10:30 AM.  All members and guests are invited to attend!

    Announcements:

Summer Schedule: As of Sunday May 27, Christ Presbyterian is on Summer Schedule. There will be no Sunday School, and regularly scheduled bible studies for men, women, and youth are on hiatus. Fellowship will be each Sunday at 10 AM, with worship beginning at 10:30 AM. Check this space for information regarding when the normal schedule will resume, including dates and times for specific studies and activities.

Women’s Monthly Lunch: The next Women’s Monthly Lunch is June 7 at 11:30 AM.

Men’s Whitewater Rafting Trip: Are you a man who likes moderately dangerous river-based team activities? If so, we have a compelling and rich opportunity for you. Adam Turnbull is planning our annual day trip to raft the Ocoee. We will meet at the church in the early morning, drive the 2 hours it takes to get there, raft, eat lunch, then be back by mid afternoon. You’ll need a bathing suit, water shoes that aren’t flip flops, and a change of clothes. Cost will probably be around $40. If you are interested, there will be a sign up sheet in the Narthex Sunday to gauge interest and to determine which upcoming Saturday to go. Alternatively you can email Adam directly and let him know your interest and availability for 6\16, 6\23, 7\14, 7\21, or 7\28. This is a great opportunity to get to know some of the other men in the church. Please sign up so we can make plans. Thanks!

Men’s Ministry Psummer Psalms: Psummer Psalms! Memorize one entire Psalm this summer, then join us for a recitation at the church, followed by ice cream.
We are planning the event for a Psunday evening in early August (maybe August 5th).
If interested, email darondrown@gmail.com for weekly encouragement and accountability.

10- 2 liters of root beer
veggie or fruit trays for coaches and staff each day (such a treat and a blessing for the adults trying to be “good” food wise)
snack items such as granola bars, fruit snacks, muffins, cookies (we need lots and lots of theseJ )
cakes, brownies, bars, or any dessert to be served at lunch for coaches and staff each day

As always we ask for prayers that the hearts of campers would be opened to hearing the Gospel and that lives would be impacted for Christ! If you have any questions don’t hesitate to get in touch with me!

    Thank you,
