My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This coming Lord’s Day we will continue our look at Colossians 3:12-17 and the beautiful virtues that we must “put on” as those who are new creations in Christ Jesus.

As you remember, we have learned that these striking virtues stand in radiant contrast to what we used to be before we met our Savior. This list of personal moral and spiritual qualities—five in verse 12, two in verse 13, and one in verse 14—is also set forth in contrast to what we must continually “put off” and “put to death” (v. 5). These are sins and character traits that once defined who we were apart from Christ.

On Sunday we will concentrate our attention on the five positive virtues that are listed in verse 12, remembering that each one is especially linked to our relationships within the Church. And, as I confessed to you last week, we have deliberately ‘tapped the brakes’ as we have arrived at this section of Paul’s letter (yes, once gain this ‘summer series’ has been extended!). We want to go slow here as we try to understand such a critical passage regarding the life of the Church.

Last Lord’s Day we considered the first of the initial five virtues, “compassionate hearts.” This week we will look at the next two; “kindness,” and “humility.”

May our Father bless you richly and keep you in His loving care until we meet together before Him this Sunday!

I love you all so much,

    Mike

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

This coming Sunday, our message will be taken from Colossians 3:12-14. The main subject at hand in this section of Paul’s letter, continuing from verses 1-10, is the “new self” (v. 10) which all who are in Christ now possess.  By God’s grace, we are all “new creations” in Christ Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:17).

And here in Colossians 3, Paul has also introduced us to the phrases “put to death” and “put off.” And we spent some time last week considering that list of terrible things that must be removed from our lives as we increasingly grow in Christ-like character.

On Sunday, we will consider the ‘other side of the fence,’ or what we must “put on” as we seek to follow our Lord. Beginning in verse 12, Paul provides a list of the beautiful virtues that should be progressively evident in our lives as the power of God’s Sprit gradually transforms us into the image of the Son.

This week we will consider the first two on Paul’s list; “compassionate hearts,” and “kindness.”

Men’s Fall Bible Study Begins This Sunday

Just one more reminder to all of our men and young men about our Fall Bible Study that starts this Sunday afternoon from 2:30-4:00 PM at the Church in the Fellowship Area. Getting with our Men is one of the greatest joys of the year, and I can’t wait to gather this Sunday with our brothers in Christ! Our subject will be based on the book Tactics, by Gregory Koukl. We will continue this study on Sunday September 30 and Sunday October 7.

May you all have a most restful weekend, and I’ll see you Sunday as we come before our King!

    In His grace,

    Mike

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

As we continue our studies through the Epistle to the Colossians, we have arrived at a major feature of Paul’s Prison letters.  Some have called it his ‘sin list,’ or ‘list of vices,’ that we find in Colossians 3:5-9 and Ephesians 5:3-11. In these passages, the Apostle lays out the sins that once characterized believers before they encountered the life-transforming grace and power of God in the Lord Jesus Christ.  These verses, in all their awful bluntness, show us what we once were, what we once were enslaved by, and the terrible trajectory of our lives apart from God’s mercy.  It is precisely these ‘sin lists’ that form the dark background upon which our new life in Christ shines with heavenly brilliance.  In both passages, Paul makes it abundantly clear that these sins attract the holy wrath of God, and are not to be a part of our new existence as disciples of our Lord.

However, our transformation from what we were to what we shall finally be in Christ is not yet complete.  We do face temptations that travel along these sinful pathways and involve our bodies as well as our souls.  We are in the process of being sanctified by the Spirit of God. But in this long process, which fully depends upon divine grace and power, we do have duties and responsibilities.  In Colossians 3, these duties are two-fold: There are sins to “put to death,” or to “put off” (3:5-9).  And there are virtues to “put on” (3:12-17).

On Sunday, we will consider what must be “put off” as we examine Colossians 3:5-9.  And we will also try to understand what putting these sins away really means and involves.  We will consider how we “put them to death,” and how we get rid of them so that the new life we have been granted in our Savior may be seen.

Let’s pray for the Lord to open our eyes and our hearts to His Truth, and for His Spirit to bless us as we come together to worship our Great Lord and King!

Church-Wide Fellowship Lunch After Worship This Sunday

Don’t forget that immediately after our service of worship we will have a fellowship lunch for all of our members and guests!  I hope you will plan to join us!

I love you all so very much!!

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Our text for this Sunday’s message is Colossians 3:1-4. This is the opening section of a majestic portion of Paul’s letter that seeks to apply what God has done for us in Christ to every-day living.

As you read these verses, you can see that there are two related commands, each flowing from the fact that all who are in Christ have been “raised with Christ” (v. 1). The first command is, “seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God” (v. 1). The second command is, “set your mind on things that are above, not on the things that are on earth” (v. 2).

This is a way of saying that our salvation, which is eternally secure in our Savior, provides the basis for two specific expressions of obedience.  One concerns what we are chasing after, or what we are seeking. The other deals with what we are thinking about and pondering.

This leads us to ask ourselves a couple of diagnostic questions as we prepare to study this passage:  1) What is it that your heart really longs for?  2) What is it that consumes or dominates your thoughts?  Take a moment or two and reflect upon these questions in light of this passage (and the rest of chapter 3), and pray that our Father will speak His Word to us this Lord’s Day.

Sunday School Begins This Week at 9:15 AM

This coming Lord’s Day we begin our Fall Semester of Sunday School for all ages.  For our list of classes, please see the website under the ‘Ministries’ tab.  And note that the High School Youth class and Matthew Elliott’s class will meet in the Church House (youth upstairs, adults downstairs).

    Men’s Fall Bible Study

All of the men and young men of the Church, and visitors, are invited to our Fall Men’s Bible Study to be held on Sunday afternoon September 23, 30, and October 7, from 2:30 to 4:00 PM at the Church.  Our theme is apologetics, and our textbook will be Tactics: A Game Plan for Discussing Your Christian Convictions, by Gregory Koukl.  This study will equip us to defend the Christian faith by “winsomely using key questions and other techniques to guide the conversation and unveil the flawed assumptions and hidden contradictions in another person’s positions” (from the Foreword).  It will be a very exciting and practical time of study and rich fellowship together.  I hope to see all our brothers there!  The Amazon link to the book is below, and if you have any questions or need more information, please contact Mark Cooper.

I love you all so very much, and what a joy and honor it is to be your pastor and brother in our Lord!
