    Friday November 30, 2018

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

This coming Lord’s day is the First Sunday of Advent. During this blessed season we are going to be considering a passage from Matthew’s account of the life of our Lord that, upon first glance, may appear to have little if anything to do with Christmas and the celebration of Christ’s Incarnation. However, I believe that as we look carefully at this passage of Holy Scripture, we will soon discover that it really has everything to do with the First Advent of our Lord and Savior. It is in this admittedly mysterious event that we see both our Lord’s perfect divinity and His perfect humanity.

Matthew 4:1-11contains the story of our Lord’s temptation by the devil in the wilderness. This is likely a story that you are familiar with, but you have probably not associated it with a celebration of the Incarnation. But I believe that here there is a vital link to Christmas, and one that will not only help us to come to understand who our Lord was and is, but will also provide us with a profound measure of comfort, assurance, and hope!

Our focus this Sunday morning will be upon the first two verses of Matthew 4 where we read:

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.”

Following Sunday’s message, the schedule for our Advent sermons will be:

Sunday December 9—Matthew 4:3-4, “The First Temptation.”

Sunday December 16—Matthew 4:5-7, “The Second Temptation.”

Sunday December 23—Matthew 4:8-10, “The Third Temptation.
    Monday December 24—Matthew 4:11, “The Devil’s Departure.”*

*Our annual Christmas Eve Service of Worship and Communion will be at 5:00 PM.

I hope you will get familiar with this passage of Scripture, and it may be helpful to look over the same account as recorded in Luke 4:1-13.

Thank you in advance for your prayers are we prepare to deliver these messages!

Missionary Letters: At Christmas we have the special opportunity to send a card or greeting to our missionary families listed in the bulletin each Sunday. They have spoken often about how meaningful it is to receive these greetings! They love the picture cards or notes and letters that many of us are sending to family and friends. They are family for us and friends as well. To make it possible for you to include them in your Christmas list we are providing addresses for each family. The PO has global stamps for sending a card or letter to Ireland and New Zealand for about $1.15. If you purchase several at a time you always have a stamp handy for future mailings! It is one way we can be connected to this part of our church family. They have the church directory to remember who they met last summer. It is a good idea to send the cards near the beginning of December to give them time to get to the destination by Christmas. Mailing packages is quite expensive but certainly some small item could be sent as well, something that could fit into the envelope but may require an extra stamp. If you have any questions or need help contact Judi Fikes (judifikes@gmail.com) please email only or catch me at church! Judi has the addresses, so talk to her, or see the email that was sent out earlier this month.

Athey Visit: Vinnie Athey is the RUF Campus minister at UAH. He and his wife Molly will be visiting our congregation on Dec. 9 to tell us more about their ministry. They will also be joining us for Second Sunday Lunch.

Finally, they will visit the Floyd E. “Tutt” Fann Veterans’ Home on Dec. 10 at 9 AM. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I trust that each of you enjoyed a blessed day of thanksgiving yesterday as we recalled the abundant gifts of grace that our Father has richly bestowed on us.

I also want to express my deep gratitude for our dear brother Rev. Jim Daughtry, who preached in my absence last week.  Thank you Jim for blessing the Church with such a powerful and timely Word from the Lord!

This coming Lord’s Day, we will return to Colossians 3:16. You will remember that we have been looking at the way the Apostle Paul has described what a healthy local Church should be like. So far, he has spoken of the . . .

Christ-like character of her members (vv. 12-13)

Of the supremacy of “love” for one another (v. 14)

Of the very “peace of Christ” which should “rule” in each of our “hearts” (v. 15)

    And of thankfulness (v. 15)

Then, we recall how the Apostle commands that the members of the Church are to see to it that “the word of Christ” should “dwell” in them “richly” (v. 16). This, as we discovered, is a description of the Church gathered on the Lord’s Day for worship. This weekly gathering, typically early on Sunday morning, was to be focused upon the Word of God which is both fromChrist and about Christ!

And as this “word of Christ” finds its home among us as the very Body of Christ, there are to be two blessed results, or two distinct sounds:

One—The sounds of mutual “teaching and admonishing” (v. 16)

    Two—The sounds of “singing” (v. 16).

On Sunday, we will be considering the kind of “singing” that the Church should engage in. Our focus will be upon the three terms Paul has used to describe the music of corporate worship, “psalms and hymns and spiritual songs” (v. 16).

I can’t wait to see you on the Lord’s Day, and I love you all so much!!

    Mike

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

By the time you read this note Carol and I will be headed out on the road for a few days of vacation.  We are so very thankful for the time off that you have made available to us, and we look forward to the spiritual and physical recharge that such an opportunity affords.

As he has done so faithfully many times before, Rev. Jim Daughtry will be filling our pulpit in my absence this coming Sunday.  Jim will be preaching a sermon from Proverbs 3:1-12 entitled, “A Father’s Wise Counsel.”  I hope you will prepare your hearts for worship by reading this passage, and by praying fervently for Jim as he comes to preach the Word to us.

Looking ahead, on Sunday November 25 I will continue our look at Colossians 3:16 and the subject of the Church’s singing. And then on Sunday December 2 we will begin our 2018 Advent emphasis leading up to the celebration of the day of our Lord’s birth. This year our Advent preaching series will be based upon Matthew’s record of the temptations of Jesus in Matthew 4:1-11. I’ll say more about this series a bit later.

Finally, don’t forget that this Sunday is the last day for you to submit nominations for the Offices of Deacon and Ruling Elder (and just to clarify, any men who are nominated and eventually elected to Church Office will come alongside those already serving).

I love you all so much and will miss you while we are away these days.   But you are always on my heart and in my prayers!

    In His grace,

    Mike

Before I introduce you to our sermon passage for this coming Lord’s Day, let me give you a few very important announcements.

Our Second Sunday Fellowship Lunch Is This Sunday

Immediately following our worship, we will share a fellowship lunch together. All members and guests are invited!

New Adult Sunday School Classes Begin This Sunday

    Understanding and Discovering God’s Will

Team taught by Fred Fohrell, Bud Lancaster and Matthew Elliott, this Sunday School class will focus on the topic of the Will of God in Christian discipleship.  We will use the book Finding the Will of God: A Pagan Notion? by Bruce Waltke, a notable Old Testament scholar.  Topics include understanding the notion of the will of God, the place of Scripture, developing a heart for God, and how to assess our personal reasoning and desires in discerning God’s will.  This Sunday School class will meet downstairs at the church house at 9:15 AM (This class may be the will of God for you!).

The Authority of God’s Word Applied to Contemporary Issues

With help from the Session, I will be leading a panel-discussion class on the application of the authority of the Bible to some of the larger contemporary issues facing the Church, our denomination, and the world. We will consider topics such as: The Sanctify of Human Life, the Nature of Human Sexuality, and Understating Sin and Temptation. This class will meet in the Worship Center at 9:15 AM.

Church Officer Nominations Are Now Open Until November 18

Church Members may secure an Officer Nomination Form in the Church Foyer.  Nominations will be received for Ruling Elder and Deacon until November 18. Once you have completed your form, please place it in one of the offering boxes at the main entrance to the Worship Center.

Help Is Needed in Our Nursery

The Lord has blessed us abundantly with an ever-growing number of precious little ones. Praise His name!  But we need your help in caring for them during our Sunday School and Worship hours. If you would like to assist us in this vital area of service in the Church Nursery please contact Ashley Turnbull.

Sunday’s message will be a continuation of our look at Colossians 3:16. You will remember that in this verse the Apostle Paul speaks of two distinct sounds that should be coming from every faithful New Testament Church.  Last Lord’s Day we considered the first sound of “teaching and admonishing one another.”  This week we will begin looking at the second distinct sound, that of “singing.”

Why should we sing? Why did singing play such a big part in the lives of the Old Covenant saints? And what place does singing have in the ministry and fellowship the local New Testament Church?  Why would Paul specifically command the Colossian believers to sing “psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs”? And do these terms represent three kinds of music, or just one?

I can’t wait to dive into the deep waters of God’s Word with you!

I love you all so very much!

    Mike

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

Before I introduce you to our sermon text for this Sunday, let me remind you that this is the weekend that we ‘Fall Back.’  Be sure to set your clocks back one hour on Saturday night!

On Sunday, our sermon text will be Colossians 3:16-17. Here, the Apostle Paul will now describe the Lord’s Church by the sounds coming from her! God’s people are not silent! They are, to the glory of the God who has saved them, a ‘noisy’ people!

After giving a general exhortation concerning “the word of Christ,” Paul will then command that there be two distinct sounds emanating from the Church fellowship, each a blessed consequence of the indwelling “word.”

Take a moment to read this passage and see if you can find them:

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

What we discover here is that every healthy local New Testament Church should have these two sounds reverberating from its core: The sound of “teaching and admonishing one another,” and the sound of robust “singing” empowered by heart-felt “thankfulness.”

This coming Lord’s Day we will explore this rich passage from God’s inspired Word!

New Adult Sunday School Classes Begin On November 11

Next Sunday, November 11, two new Adult Sunday School Classes will be offered:

I love you all so very much!

    Mike

Alleluia Choir: Alleluia Choir meets today from 4:00-4:45 pm in the Church House. All second graders through age 12 are encouraged to join us.

Youth Group: We will meet again on Sunday, November 11 at the Church Fellowship Hall. The times will be from 4:30-6:30 pm and this will be for students ages 13-18 years of age. We ask that those who attend be at least 13 years of age due to the content of some of the discussions and the wide age range in the group.

Also of interest to the youth, Westminster Presbyterian is hosting our 2nd annual youth event at Monte Sano on Nov 3rd from noon til sunset. Last year we had about 80 students from 5 churches. Its a great chance for us to work together to have a large youth event. The event is 12-sunset – but as long as you say Westminster at the gate – FREE ADMISSION. So families can come and explore all day if you wish. Additionally there is a winter retreat coming up, and you can get more info by clicking here.

Senior Fellows:  On Tuesday, November 6 at 9:00 AM the Senior Fellows will enjoy breakfast, fellowship and a devotional at the Church House. Guests are welcome. Also on Tuesday, November 13 the Senior Fellows will celebrate their wives and will kick off the holiday season with a dinner at 6:00 PM at Grill 29 in Providence.
