    Sermon Preview

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

This coming Sunday we will return to Colossians 4:2-4. As you know, the subject at hand here is prayer (v. 2). The Apostle Paul exhorts the Church to be steadfast in corporate prayer, and equally persistent in personal prayer. And we also learned that there are two features of this steadfast praying. The first is constant watchfulness (v. 2), and the second is thanksgiving (v. 2).

Then, beginning in verse 3, Paul requests prayers for himself and for his ministry associates (vv. 3-4). Of course, we recall that Paul is in prison in Rome, and it is understandable that there would be many needs facing him. So he turns to his brothers and sisters for help, and for help through the ministry of persistent prayer.

    Look again at this passage:

At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison— that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak” (4:3-4).

As we give attention to this remarkable passage once again on Sunday, I need to ask for your kind indulgence. I sense the need to go very slowly and methodically through this portion of the Apostle’s letter. In fact, the Lord willing, we will turn again to this this passage for a third time on March 3. But I believe that this subject of prayer is of such vital importance for us that I cannot permit myself to go any faster! So this week, we want to zero in on just four words that we find here in verse 3: “pray also for us.”

In the first place, as we examine these four words we can observe three basic truths concerning prayer that are very strongly implied here:

    • Our persistent prayers matter, and they really make a difference.
    • Our persistent prayers are made effectual by God’s sovereign and eternal designs.
    • Our persistent prayers have been commanded by our Father who loves us.

Then, we will discover two major lessons concerning persistent praying that will encourage us as we give ourselves to this sacred duty:

    • Our Father takes great delight in our persistent praying.
    • Our Father sanctifies us by our persistent praying.

Along with this passage from Colossians, let me also invite you to read and reflect upon one of the blessed parables that Jesus told. In Luke 18:1-8 our Lord spoke of the persistent widow and the unrighteous judge. And He gave us this particular parable for the express purpose of teaching us “always to pray,” and to do so with steadfastness, and not to give up our “lose heart” (v. 1).

I look forward to probing the Word of the Lord with you this Sunday, and I love you and pray for you constantly!

    Mike

    Announcements:

Childrens’ Ministry Update: I just wanted to send a quick update from our Children’s Ministry. So many exciting things to look forward to over the next six months. Our ministry thrives because our church body is so supportive! Thank you!!! Our nurseries are always growing and changing. We have been blessed with so many new, young families, and also many visitors. Almost every week we have a family visiting with small children. To be our main support, we have seven paid staff members who work in our three nursery/classrooms or to assist me each week. I also have a member volunteer in the baby nursery to supplement our staff. But, there is always a need to rock babies! I still have some slots needed for Spring: Click HERE to volunteer for the next few weeks.

Need: Nursery Backup Team There are times where I am scrambling to get a volunteer due to sickness or absence. I need women who would be able to sub in nursery on a last minute basis. This might mean a Saturday night text. But, with 6 women on my list, it would happen very infrequently. Ideally, this would be non-baby/toddler moms 🙂 Additionally, I am interested in finding any women who have experience with special needs children. This may mean that you have job experience or that you simply have a heart to serve and pray for this component of our ministry. Click HERE to sign-up to be on my nursery team. And email me at children@christpreshamptoncove.org if you have a heart for special needs (in any way, shape, or form). Please prayerfully consider serving in this way – not much of a commitment to you except to support this ministry!

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Our walk through the Epistle to the Colossians continues this coming Lord’s Day as we now move to consider another section of the letter. For several weeks we’ve studied what Paul had to say regarding the new life in the home, and how the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ changes everything about us, and especially our relationships with one another.

This week, we are moving on with Paul to a new and final section of the letter (4:2-6) where he addresses some additional concerns before he brings his Epistle to an end. In verses 2-6, we will discover some critical duties, prompted by God’s grace and empowered by His Spirit, that every believer in the Lord is to faithfully carry out for the glory of Christ’s name.

As you can see, the first duty, or responsibility, is that of “prayer.” And we will find both an emphasis upon general prayer” (v. 2), as well as specific prayer” (vv. 3-4). And then, Paul will set forth the Christian duty of living in the world as a witness for the Gospel (vv. 5-6). He will exhort all believers to live among the lost in a way that magnifies the name of Christ and assists the free and unhindered advance of the message of salvation.

This Sunday, and the next Lord’s Day as well, we are going to consider the matter of prayer. Our special focus this week will be upon prayer in general as it is commanded in verse 2: “Continue steadfastly in prayer.”

I look forward to seeing you all on the Lord’s Day, and I love you and pray for you continually!

    Mike

    Friday February 8, 2019

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus our Lord,

This coming Lord’s Day we are going to take another look Colossians 3:22-4:1 and consider once more what the Apostle Paul has to say to “bondservants” and “masters.” And we remember that the “bondservants,” or slaves, were regarded as part of the typical Roman household of the first century.

In this passage, Paul is addressing the relationship between the “bondservants” and “masters” in the same way that he has previously spoken of the relationship between the husband and the wife, and the parents and the children.

Last Sunday we got familiar with the terrible reality first-century of slavery.  We considered how slaves were regarded as non-persons with no rights, but how the Apostle Paul boldly set forth a most revolutionary and radical view of the relationship between slaves and slave owners—one totally changed by the reconciling power of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ!

This week our focus will be upon the specific things the Apostle says concerning the way that the Christian servants were to carry out their duties. It is at this point that the direct connection and relevance to us appears, even though the institution of slavery no longer exists for us.

As far as a hint as to what this relevance to us is, let me ask you to notice how often Paul speaks of our Lord in verses 22-25, and how he connects the work of the servant to the Savior:

    v. 22—“fearing the Lord

    v. 23—“for the Lord

    v. 24—“from the Lord

    v. 24—“serving the Lord

You might have already guessed that this inspired Word to servants is also a Word that speaks to anyone who works for or serves others. It addresses our jobs, careers, and our vocations. And it provides for us a divinely inspired a blue-print for the way that we are to carry out our duties in the world, but as citizens of heaven.

I hope you will study this passage carefully as you prepare for Lord’s Day worship.

    Some Reminders

Second Sunday Lunch is this week immediately after Worship. We look forward to a wonderful time of fellowship together, and great food as well!

    Sermon Preview

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On Sunday we will once again open the Word of the Lord to the Epistle to the Colossianschapter 3. Our sermon text will be Colossians 3:22-4:1.

We are continuing our look at a portion of this inspired letter, authored by the Apostle Paul, that has is its subject, ‘The New Life That We Have in Christ Our Lord.’ And in this section, we are learning more specifically about ‘The New Life at Home,’ and how the grace of God changes each of our relationships within the family.

This coming Lord’s Day we will see how Paul speaks of the third component of the first-century household, that of the bondservant and master relationship. Initially, this is the relationship that we are least familiar with from the perspective of our time and culture.

In Paul’s day, the horrible institution of human slavery was alive and well. Some scholars have estimated that a third to one half of the citizens of any given Roman city were “bondservants,” or slaves. Slavery was so ingrained in the ancient Greco-Roman culture that slaves were considered to be a part of the typical family, or household. And this is why Paul addresses “bondservants” and “masters” in this section of his letter which deals with family relations.

Obviously, this fact leads to a significant curiosity about slavery, and the link between such a dehumanizing institution and the Christian Gospel. For example, we might ask why Paul does not speak here of the overthrow of slavery, or at least strongly condemn it. We might also wonder about Christian slave-owners, which there obviously were, for they are directly addressed in Colossians 4:1 (see also Ephesians 6:9). Can one be a “master” and a Christian? And we might want to know about the connection between this passage and our own lives here in a country where, by God’s grace, this institution has been recognized as evil and defeated. Does this section of Paul’s letter really have anything to say to us today? What is the contemporary application of this passage of inspired Scripture?

Well, I believe that this text is so important and relevant to us that we will spend two Sunday’s examining very carefully Paul’s message. I hope that you will take some time to read and reflect upon these words, and also the parallel passage found in Ephesians 6:5-9.

May our dear Father bless you with a restful weekend, and I’ll see you Sunday as we gather before Him.

All my love and prayers to all,

    Mike
