  • Mid-Week Announcement – Church Officer Elections

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

Last week I promised you that in preparation for our Officer Elections this coming Lord’s Day I would be sharing with you the names of those men who have been nominated by the Church to the offices of Deacon and Ruling Elder. The names of four men will appear on the ballot that will be distributed to all Communing Members who are present in worship on Sunday. OurBook of Church Order specifies that in order to be elected to office by the members, each man must receive a “majority vote of those present” (BCO 24.3). This also indicates that absentee voting is not permitted.

There are two men who have been nominated by the Church and trained by the Session for the Office of Deacon, and if elected will be added to our current Diaconate giving us a total of 16 active Deacons:

    Mr. Al Bart (wife Carol)

    Mr. John Dragash (wife Heather)

There are two men who have been nominated by the Church and trained by the Session for the Office of Ruling Elder, and if elected will be added to our current Session giving us a total of 6 active Elders (5 Ruling Elders, 1 Teaching Elder):

    Mr. Daron Drown (wife Amy)

    Mr. Matthew Elliott (wife Meghan)

In regard to Matthew, the Session believes that should he be elected as a Ruling Elder, this will greatly enhance his present ministry to the Church as our Pastoral Assistant for Counseling. It is also the desire of the Session that at some later time in the future Matthew would begin the process of becoming a Teaching Elder (a lengthy procedure that includes the actions of both our Church and those of our Presbytery).

The election of these four brothers will take place as an act of worship following our observance of the Lord’s Supper on Sunday.

Please pray for these men and their families, and for our Lord’s will to be accomplished concerning those who lead and serve His Church.

Before I go, let me say a very special thank you to Ashley Turnbull, who did such a marvelous job coordinating our Church Picnic last Sunday! I also know that Ashley had several people assisting her, and to each of you we say, ‘Thank you, and praise the Lord!’ What a wonderful time of fellowship it was!!

I love you all so very much!

    Mike

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

This coming Lord’s Day we will continue following the story of David’s life and ministry to God as the king of Israel, the greatest of Israel’s kings, the ideal king!  And as you may remember, we are paying particular attention to the outworking of the covenant the Lord made with David, and how that covenant reveals God’s plan of salvation, which reaches its consummation in our Lord Jesus Christ. We learn about this covenant in 2 Samuel 7:12-13, where the Lord says:

When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.”

As we look back upon the life of David, we see him as a ‘type of Christ.’ He is the one whom God raised up to uniquely foreshadow the ministry of our Lord Jesus. And this is why our Lord is depicted in Scripture as the fulfillment of the eternal Davidic Kingship. He is the One who came from David’s lineage. He is the One who would assume David’s throne.  And like David, Jesus would exercise a sovereign rule over His people, and even over the whole universe! He would be the One to provide for His people, even to represent them before the Lord God as a Priest, Intercessor, and Mediator.

This week, we will begin an examination of 2 Samuel 9. Here, we will encounter the most beloved story of David and “Mephibosheth,” the crippled son of Jonathan, David’s dearest friend and the one with whom he had established a special bond and “covenant.” It is within this amazing story that we encounter a most vivid picture of God’s grace, or what is known as “kindness” in 2 Samuel 9 (see vv. 1, 3, and 7).

As you pray for this week’s service of worship and the preaching of the Word of God, please remember our Officer Election that will take place after our observance of the Lord’s Supper. Let’s be in fervent prayer for our Lord’s will to be done.

I love you all, and pray for you constantly!

    Mike

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

This coming Lord’s Day we will be privileged to have Matthew Elliott in our pulpit. Matthew will be preaching from Luke 18:9-14, the account of our Lord’s parable of the Pharisee and the tax-collector. As you may remember, this beloved parable was told by Jesus not only to instruct His disciples concerning prayer, but also to teach them how sinners are able to stand before the Lord, despite their sins. In fact, Jesus will speak here of being “justified” before God (v. 14), and this forms the heart of the Gospel message which is developed later by Paul, most prominently in Romans.

Please lift up Matthew in your prayers, and take some time to reacquaint yourself with this passage. I look forward to leading our worship and sitting under the preaching of God’s Word!

    Officer Elections on May 5

As we announced a couple of weeks ago, we will be having elections for the offices of Ruling Elder and Deacon on Sunday May 5th following our morning worship. Next week, I will be introducing you to the candidates that have been nominated by the Church, trained and approved by the Session, and whose names will appear on the ballot. Please pray fervently for this process as we seek God’s will concerning our Church leaders.

    Church Picnic This Sunday Afternoon!

Finally, I hope to see you all at our annual Church Picnic this Sunday afternoon at 4:00 PM at Monte Sano State Park. We are looking forward to a blessed time of fellowship together, and please invite guests to come as well!

I love you all and can’t wait to worship our Lord with you this Sunday!

    Sermon Preview

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

Today is known among Christians as ‘Good Friday.’ And this is the day that we pause and give studied reflection to the death of our Lord and Savior upon the cross.

Of course, His atoning death in our place occurred on Friday of Passion Week. However, that day so long ago was anything but ‘good’ for our Lord. On that day, including the hours prior to His crucifixion, Jesus suffered to a degree unknown in the history of the world or in the experience of mankind! The Apostle Paul tells us that in that event of becoming the Sacrifice for our transgression, the Son of God was “made” by God the Father “to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21). Who among us can fathom that one verse!

And yet, because it was not a ‘good’ day for our Lord, it forever became a ‘good’ day for us who believe in Him!

The prophet Isaiah helps us understand this blessed fact:

But He was pierced through for our transgressions,
    He was crushed for our iniquities;
The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him,
And by His scourging we are healed.
All of us like sheep have gone astray,
    Each of us has turned to his own way;
But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him (Isaiah 53:6-7)

What great news this is! What a ‘good’ day it is, all because of His love for us!

This evening at 6:00 PM we will gather again to worship our Lord and to observe ‘Good Friday.’ Our sermon will come from Mark 14:27-31, and will focus specifically upon the disturbing thing that Jesus said to His disciples following the Last Supper: “You will all fall away” (v. 27).

Then, this coming Sunday, Resurrection Day, our message will come from John 2:13-22, and we will consider our Lord’s amazing words to the Jewish authorities: “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up” (v. 19).

Please be in prayer for these times of worship and proclamation, and make sure to read and meditate upon these passages as we prepare to come together before our Lord and King.

I love you all so very much!!

    Mike

  • Children’s Ministry Update – April 2019

    Church Family,

I just returned from a great few days at the PCA Children’s Leadership Conference at Ridgehaven Camp in Brevard, NC. This is a yearly gathering of over 200 children’s leaders across the country. It is amazing to see how God is working in PCA churches near and far!

I wanted to highlight a few things I learned and resources I gained from the Committee on Discipleship Ministries. As always, you can go to their website HERE to learn more and find additional links/resources. They work hard to connect people to resources for PCA ministries in general.

I am sending this to the entire church body because all of these can be applied to Christians of all ages! Also, I want you to know what parents are facing and how you can encourage them.

Here are my top 3 takeaways from this year’s event:

    1. Telling the story of the bible from beginning to end.

Author Nancy Guthrie was our keynote speaker. She is amazing! Her seminars were on the topic of “Biblical Themes.” We were broken up into small groups and learned how to go into the bible and connect specific themes (i.e. king/kingdom, God’s presence/Tabernacle, Blessing/Curses, Marriage, Light/Darkness, Creation/New Creation, etc) to specific events on the biblical timeline (i.e. Creation, Fall, Abraham/Promise, Wisdom, Prophets, etc). She reminded us that when we don’t understand the complete bible story, we try and make the story about “us” rather than about “Him.”

I was encouraged to study the bible’s themes for myself and relay that to my own children each time instead of constantly separating the bible into individual events and stories. There is great value and understanding in our children knowing the complete story from Creation to Consummation! You can learn more about this in her new book, Even Better Than Eden.

She also hosts a podcast that is excellent. You can subscribe HERE.

    2. Training your children for corporate worship.

In a day and age where many churches have moved away from keeping small children in worship, this seminar went through biblical reasons for our children to be with us during worship and how parents (and churches) can be encouraged even when it gets tough. I will work to type up my notes from this seminar and distribute to the children’s ministry email list later this month. Lots of good and practical tips on training your children at home (family worship) and at service (corporate worship).

Here are several books that were recommended to me during this seminar. I have purchased a few of them, and they are on the hallway bookshelf. You are welcome to borrow (just be sure to return).

*Nursery of the Holy Spirit (recommended by Pastor Mike)
    *Parenting in the Pew
*Heirs of the Covenant (great for teachers and also those new to covenant theology)
    *Let the Children Worship
    *Family Worship

    3. Ways parents can make a plan for technology.

This was number one on my list, as I face these battles myself already with small children. I know many of you will be raising teens in the digital age and aren’t sure what your plan should look like. This seminar was a good reminder that just like we came up with plans for when our kids were potty training or for how we wanted to discipline them, we should also make a plan for how we will use technology in our homes. He recommended two books: “12 Ways Your Phone is Changing You” and “Tech Wise Family.” I bought both of these and placed them on the shelf. Feel free to look at those when you get a chance.

Thank you all for being a church body who supports my attending training events like this and for supporting our children’s ministry at Christ Pres. Please let me know if you have any questions or want additional information!

    In Christ,
    Ashley

    Sermon Preview

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

This coming Lord’s Day begins our 2019 celebration of Easter, which will take us from Palm Sunday, to Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and then to Easter Sunday.

At each of our worship services this week we will be preaching a series of message entitled, “On the Way to the Cross.” In these sermons, we will take a close look at some of the things that our Lord both did and said as He made His journey toward Jerusalem where He would die upon the cross, and then be raised from the dead on the third day.

This Sunday our sermon text will be Matthew 16:21-23. The event recorded here occurred just after that most important episode where Peter confessed Jesus as the Messiah. And, of course, Peter’s confession came in response to our Lord’s direct question posed to the Twelve: “But who do you say that I am?” (v. 15). The answer given by Peter, was that Jesus is, “the Christ, the Son of the living God” (v. 16).  And then, our Lord Jesus declared that upon the basis of that Apostolic confession of His Lordship, Jesus would establish His Church, His New Covenant people, called by grace out of the world of darkness, sin, and spiritual death, and into the radiant light of eternal life in Him!

However, in our passage for Palm Sunday we will encounter the incident that took place immediately after this confession of faith. Here, we will discover how our Lord further clarified for His disciples, and for the whole world, what it actually means that He is “the Christ,” God’s Messiah! This is, for all intents and purposes, the deeper answer the Lord Himself gives to the question He first posed to His disciples!

Second Sunday Fellowship Lunch This Week!

Just another reminder that our Second Sunday Fellowship Lunch will be this Sunday!

I love you with all my heart, and I can’t wait to see you on the Lord’s Day!

    Mike

  • Mid Week Announcement – Easter Week Services

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Easter Week 2019 is here, and I wanted to make you aware of our plans for this holy week in the life of the Church.

This coming Sunday will be the first of four special services of worship that we will engage in to celebrate our Lord’s bodily resurrection from the dead. As we come together for worship, the theme of our sermons will be, ‘On the Way to the Cross.’ We will be studying some of the things that Jesus both said and did on His way to Calvary. Below is the schedule of services, sermons, and Scripture passages:

Sunday April 14, 10:30 AM, Palm Sunday–“Get Behind Me, Satan!” Matthew 16:21-23.

Thursday April 18, 6:00 PM, Maundy Thursday–“Deny Yourself and Take Up Your Cross.” Matthew 16:24-25.

Friday April 19, 6:00 PM, Good Friday–“You Will All Fall Away.” Mark 14:27-31.

Sunday April 21, 10:30 AM, Easter Day–“In Three Days I Will Raise It Up.” John 2:13-22.

A nursery will be provided for Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services, and guests are most welcome!

Also, remember that there will be Sunday School Easter Sunday at 9:15 AM.

I love you all, and I look forward to our celebration of new life in our risen Savior!

    Mike

    Sermon Preview

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

When I think about the subject of prayer, the second person from Scripture that mind my immediately rests upon is king David (the first being our Lord, and the Lord’s Prayer). Of course, we have an inspired record of many of David’s prayers preserved for us in the Psalms. And any serious study of this subject will surely need to probe the immense depths of David’s prayerful reflections found there. In fact, we can (and even should!) pray David’s very words, knowing that the Spirit has inspired and preserved them in order to assist us in the formation of our own prayers to our Father in heaven.

In 2 Samuel 7:18-29 there is another recorded prayer of Israel’s greatest king. And it comes immediately after the Lord’s announcement, delivered through the prophet Nathan, that Yahweh would build an eternal house for David. The king’s prayerful response to this divine declaration of grace provides us with some amazing insights about prayer that will both inform and encourage each of us.

This coming Lord’s Day we will explore these inspired words together, and I encourage you to read and meditate upon this passage this weekend (as well as Psalm 89) in preparation for our worship.

Officer Elections on Sunday May 5, 2019

On behalf of your Session, I would like to announce that on Sunday May 5, following our morning worship, we will be having Officer Elections. In the next couple of weeks, the Session will be presenting to you the names of those men who have been nominated by the Church, examined by the Session, trained in the duties of their respective offices, and are being recommended by the Session to the Church for election to the offices of Ruling Elder and Deacon. Please stay tuned for more information, and join us in prayer as we seek our Lord’s will.

I love you all so dearly, and delight in praying for you constantly!!

    In His grace,

    Mike
