Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

It seems impossible, but with the arrival of this coming Lord’s Day we will gather before our Savior in worship for the last time in 2019. The days and weeks and months have flown by, and here we are once again at the beginning of another new year!

Every December I think and pray most seriously about what we should preach on the final Sunday of the year. Advent has come and gone, and the new month and year have not yet arrived. So what text of Holy Scripture should we consider as we worship on this last Sunday of 2019? What passage will help us to faithfully conclude the present year, and launch us off into a new one with an even greater love and commitment to our glorious King?

Well, the text I have chosen for this Lord’s Day is Psalm 100. Many of you will immediately recognize this one, perhaps having committed its five simple verses to memory. It is a psalm about worship. Not only does it define worship for us, but it also provides us with reasons, or motives, for our joyous celebration in the presence of God.

It was Karl Barth, the celebrated Swiss Reformed theologian, who once declared that, “ Christian worship is the most momentous, the most urgent, the most glorious action that can take place in human life.” And this is precisely the main point made in this blessed Psalm!

The reason I’ve desired to come here, to Psalm 100, on our last Sunday together in 2019 is that the arrival of the New Year is a most appropriate time to recalibrate our life-compass, so to speak. Once again, we need to reestablish our coordinates, reaffirm our main priority, and set the course for another year of service to our Savior and Lord. I believe this Psalm will help us to do these things. And its message will lift our hearts, embolden our steps, and solidify our love and commitment to our King as we prepare to enter another year.

I hope you will take time to read and reflect upon Psalm 100 as you prepare for worship. And may our gracious Father bless you all with a wonderful weekend!

    I love you dearly,

    Mike

    Sermon Preview

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

With the arrival of the Fourth Sunday of Advent this Lord’s Day, we will again turn to one of the Old Testament prophets to discover another of the ancient and inspired promises of Christmas.

This week our sermon passage will come from one of the most enigmatic books of the Bible, penned by one of the least known of the prophets, Zechariah.

You might be surprised to know that it is this prophetic book, written after the exile (about the year 520 BC), that is so very important for our understanding of the life of Jesus. In fact, one Bible scholar has noted that,

“ The last six chapters in the book of Zechariah are a part of the Old Testament on which Jesus Himself had deeply reflected and to which the New Testament writers turned to interpret His story.”

And one of my favorite New Testament commentators, the late Dr. F. F. Bruce, also recognized that the final chapters of the apocalyptic prophecy of Zechariah have “ left their mark in the passion narrative of all four Gospels.”

This is particularly evident in the passage we will turn to this Sunday, Zechariah 12:10-13:1.

There we find the following words:

“And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn . . . . On that day there shall be a fountain opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and uncleanness.”

    What a remarkable promise!

I think you can see the most obvious ways in which this prophecy was fulfilled in the life and death of our dear Savior and Lord!  And I believe we can also recognize the links to Christmas as well, for Zechariah envisioned One, a great Redeemer, who was both divine and human.

He saw One who had the sovereign power of salvation and could declare the promise of redemption, “ I will pour out” (the Lord God is the speaker here), but also One who could suffer and die for the sins of the people, “ on me . . . whom they have pierced.”

On Sunday we will prayerfully examine these inspired words, and we will trace their fulfillment in the Gospels as we reflect for a final time upon the profound mystery of the Incarnation of our Lord.

I love you all so very much!

    Mike

    Sermon Preview

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

    Merry Christmas from Ezekiel!

It sounds a bit strange, doesn’t it? And yet, as we have observed over the last couple of Sundays, the prophets of the Old Testament indeed had a ‘Christmas’ message to send! And we have drawn the practical conclusion that our celebration of Advent, and our basic understanding of the Christmas Miracle, is not at all complete until we have considered what the prophets foretold about the coming Messiah and King!

This Lord’s Day we will turn to the thrilling Messianic prophecy discovered in Ezekiel 37:24-28. In these verses, the prophet provides us with an ancient promise of One who will come to Israel in her exile and spiritual hopelessness. He will be God’s “ servant,” and Israel’s new “ king,” “ shepherd,” and “ prince”!  And the results of His appearance and His ministry will be nothing less than miraculous!

As you pray and ready your hearts for Lord’s Day worship this Sunday, you’ll be richly blessed by reading and meditating upon the entire thirty-seventh chapter of Ezekiel.

    Christmas Cards for Missionaries:

At Christmas we have the special opportunity to send a card or greeting to our missionary families listed in the bulletin each Sunday. They have spoken often about how meaningful it is to receive these greetings! They love the picture cards or notes and letters that many of us are sending to family and friends. They are family for us and friends as well. To make it possible for you to include them in your Christmas list we are providing addresses for each family. The PO has global stamps for sending a card or letter to Ireland and New Zealand for about $1.15. If you purchase several at a time you always have a stamp handy for future mailings! It is one way we can be connected to this part of our church family. They have the church directory to remember who they met last summer.

It is a good idea to send the cards near the beginning of December to give them time to get to the destination by Christmas. Mailing packages is quite expensive but certainly some small item could be sent as well, something that could fit into the envelope but may require an extra stamp. If you have any questions or need help contact Judi Fikes (judifikes@gmail.com) please email only or catch me at church! Save these addresses so you can use them from time to time.

    Sermon Preview

My dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

This coming Lord’s Day, the second Sunday of Advent 2019, we will once again turn to the prophet Isaiah for another Old Testament ‘Christmas card.’

Our sermon text will be Isaiah 42:1-4 where God the Father introduces One that He describes as “ My Servant” (v. 1).

This passage is the first of four such ‘Servant songs’ in the book of Isaiah, perhaps the most familiar of them being Isaiah 52:13-53:12 (a passage we particularly think of at Easter).

In this passage from chapter 42 we will consider the Servant’s description (v. 1), His mission (vv. 1, 3-4), and His character (vv. 2-4).

And then we will see how this very passage from Isaiah 42 is interpreted by the Apostles, and linked directly to our Lord Jesus in the New Testament (see Matthew 3:13-17; 12:15-21; 17:1-8).

Have a blessed weekend and I’ll see you Sunday!

With His love and my constant prayers,

    Mike

December 8, and January 12 are the next ones coming up. Please make plans to join us in the Fellowship Hall after worship. And please welcome visitors to stay and join us to eat!

***A word of thanks to all the MANY helpers who prep, set out tables, serve the meals, bring food or dessert or tea, and those who linger to clean up – THANK YOU for making these lunches a great success. It is a pleasure to work alongside you and serve the church body this way.

    Sincerely in Christ,
    Denise Brown
