Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

This Sunday our message will come from Hebrews 2:1-4. This passage begins with an inspired exhortation to “ pay much closer attention” to the truth that we have found in Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior.

Some might well ask if there is anything left for us to do, that we must do, once we come to a saving knowledge of Christ. After all, we are saved by grace apart from our works.

Well, here in this passages from Hebrews we find our answer. And what we will discover is that there is, indeed, something most critical that we all must do!

To state it from the positive side, the author exhorts us to “ pay much closer attention” to the Word of God. From the negative side, he warns us not to “ drift away” from the truth, and not to “ neglect” it either (vv. 1, 3). These commands and warnings certainly make it clear that there is much we are responsible for, even after we have experienced the all-sufficient grace and mercy of God in Christ!

Along with this, there is also in this passage the distinct, yet unspoken, implication that throughout the course of our Christian lives we will be confronted with the persistent temptation to slack off in our commitment to Christ and His Word. This is precisely the very serious situation that the original readers of this Epistle faced.

Our task on Sunday will be to explore what it means in practical terms for us to give our fullest and most focused “ attention” to the truth, especially in the midst of the very real temptations to ” neglect” and ” drift away” from His Word.

I love you all so very much!

    Mike

    FCA Help:

In less than a month; June 17th-21st  FCA’s camp (http://northalabamafca.org/madisoneast) will be held right across the street! I get the privilege of helping to serve lunch at that camp. Each year members from our church have donated food items, and volunteered to help prepare, serve and clean up lunch each day during camp as well as the very large family night meal on Wednesday June 19th. Much of the food served is donated by local businesses and individuals. Our church has supplied many needs for past camps; specifically dessert and side dishes for the coaches and staff table, coffee needs for the coaches and staff each morning, a fun dessert for the 13 year olds attending camp their last year, and HOURS of hands on help in the kitchen. This is such a blessing to so many! The kitchen staff is unusual in that we get to serve and come into contact with most everyone attending and working the camp. Having a team of people to help this run smoothly I believe allows more moments to spend pointing those kids to the gospel….the whole reason this camp happens!  If you would like to join me and several others from our church body in helping during camp please contact me! I think we have a lot of fun in the kitchen!  If you would like to donate food items I have a sign up genius for specific food needs. If you have any questions contact me! I love to chat about what we are doing and how this camp blesses so many!

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

For those men among us who have sons, one thing is universally true about us. We all love to brag about them!

Our hearts are often filled with fatherly pride at their accomplishments. It would seem that there is something inside us, an irresistible power, that compels us to tell others about what they have done. And I strongly suspect that wherever we might look in our world, among people of any nation or culture, we will find fathers speaking of their sons with broad smiles across their faces, beaming with joy.

In the Epistle to the Hebrews, we discover this very thing in chapter 1, but on an infinitely greater scale!

From verses 4-14, the author of the inspired letter quotes from seven Old Testament passages which record the words of God the Father as He speaks proudly of His Beloved Son. And each of the seven passages reveals to the world something about the Son which makes Him vastly superior to the angels and all the heavenly hosts!

This Lord’s Day we will close out our examination of Hebrews 1 by looking at the first four of these seven Old Testament passages (vv. 4-8). Here, we will encounter God the Father who joyfully says, in effect, ‘Let Me tell you about My Son!’

Let us all pray that we will be swept up in our Father’s own holy pride as He speaks of the One who is our beloved Lord, Redeemer, and Friend!

I love you all so very much,

    Mike

    Request for Ushers:

Brothers and sisters, you may have noticed in recent weeks that we have been encountering a wonderful situation in the Sunday morning worship service: more people are attending. From another perspective, we’re experiencing overcrowding. This mainly affects persons who are visiting and arriving near the time the service is beginning. They have difficulty locating seats. To relieve this, the deacons would like to implement a team of ushers to assist those searching for a seat.

    To expand:

    • Goal is to have 6 sub-teams of 4 ushers each. These would be amiable men ages 16 and up.
    • A sub-team would serve 2 consecutive Sundays every 12 weeks.
    • Operations would begin at 10:25 and cease at approximately 10:40.
    • 2 entrance ushers would intercept those at the door who appear to need help and direct them to an interior usher. They would also restrict entrance during prayer and readings from the Word. Location: Narthex and rear of sanctuary.
    • 2 interior ushers stay abreast of available seat locations, request those seated to shift when this would create needed space, and escort entrants to available spaces. Location: 3 interior aisles.
    • You will have an official pin-on name tag identifying you as an usher. Dress nicely.
    • Each sub-team will have a captain to coordinate readiness.
    • A full schedule will be created in advance to facilitate absences and swapping.

This is a good but simple way to serve our church, enhance our Sunday welcome, and make a friendly initial connection with visitors.
Questions? Interested? Please contact the deacon in charge, Jack Loose (256 881-8953 or jackdloose@gmail.com), or sign up in the Narthex during February. A brief training session will be held in the sanctuary before we begin in March.

    Prayer Requests:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

As you read this, Carol and I are away for a brief trip celebrating our anniversary.

It will be our joy to have Matthew Elliott preaching for us this coming Lord’s Day. Matthew’s message is entitled, “ At the Feet of the Master,” and will come from Luke 10:38-42.

And teaching our Adult Sunday School class on How We Got the Bible, will be Daron Drown. The lesson this coming week will be on the Inspiration of Scripture.

Also, we look forward to Rev. Jim Daughtry leading our observance of Communion in my absence.

Please pray for these brothers as they teach and proclaim God’s Word to us.

We love you all dearly, and always keep you in our prayers with joy and thanksgiving!

    Sermon Preview

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

This coming Sunday we will complete our ‘ Tour of the Seven Wonders of Jesus Our Lord’ as we examine the words of Hebrews 1:3.

There we read that, “ After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.”

It is here that we encounter the final two of the seven glorious attributes of our Savior. First, He has secured for all time the full salvation of all who have believed upon Him. And secondly, He has taken His seat at the Father’s right hand, and now rules all of heaven and earth!

Once again, we will seek not only to understand the full meaning of these phrases, but also how these magnificent descriptions of Jesus powerfully move us to greater faithfulness, loyalty, and love for Him.

New Adult Sunday School Class Begins This Week!

Also on this coming Lord’s Day, I will begin teaching a new Adult Sunday School Class on the subject of ‘ How We Got the Bible.’

As we engage this very important topic, we will seek to address a number of issues that will help us to have more confidence in God’s written Word.

Some of the key matters we will tackle in this class are:

    • How were the Old and New Testaments formed, and when?
    • How do we know that the 39 books of the Old Testament are the ‘right ones’?
    • How do we know that the 27 books of the New Testament are the ‘right ones’?
    • What do the words “canon” and “canonization” mean?
    • How can we know that the Words of Scripture are true?
    • What about the other ‘gospels,’ and other ‘epistles’ (purportedly written by the apostles) that are not included in the New Testament?
    • Why were some of the books that are in the Bible seriously questioned?
    • Does archaeology help us to better understand how we got the Bible?
    • Should we also include the Apocrypha among those books referred to as ‘Holy Scripture’?

If you would like to read along with us as we cover these topics, below is a list of recommended books. Those in bold print are a bit easier to read.

Bruce, F. F. The Canon of Scripture. InterVarsity, 1988.

Comfort, Phillip W., ed. The Origin of the Bible. Tyndale, 1992.

Frame, John. The Doctrine of the Word of God. See Part 4, ‘How the Word Comes to Us’ (especially chapters 17-23).

Grudem, Wayne, and C. John Collins and Thomas R. Schreiner, eds. Understanding Scripture: An Overview of the Bible’s Origin, Reliability, and Meaning. Crossway, 2012.

Grudem, Wayne. Systematic Theology. Zondervan, 1996. See Part I, ‘The Doctrine of the Word of God’ (chapters 2-8).

Kruger, Michael. Canon Revisited: Establishing the Origins and Authority of the New Testament Books. Crossway, 2012.

Reeves, Michael, and Charles E. Hill. Know How We Got Our Bible. Zondervan, 2018.

Have a blessed weekend, and I can’t wait to see you on Sunday!
