    Sermon Preview:

    Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

    Our sermon this Sunday will come from Hebrews 5:5-6. And we will learn more about how our Lord Jesus serves as our Great High Priest.

    As you get familiar with this text (and through 5:10), you will see that there are three key terms in these two verses. We discover that Jesus our Lord is God’s “ Son,” who is “ begotten,” and is our High Priest “ forever.”

    On the surface, these words seem simple enough, for we are very familiar with how Scripture uses them frequently to describe our Lord. We know that He is the only-begotten Son of God, and that He is eternal. But we need to embrace the full weight of these terms as we consider how Jesus serves as a Priest who is superior to Aaron in every way.

    As you prepare for the message, let me encourage you to begin reading at Hebrews 5:1 and read on through to 7:28. And then we will come together once more on the Lord’s Day to worship our God and to hear His Holy Word proclaimed.

    Time to Fall Back

    Speaking of Sunday, remember that this is ‘Fall Back’ time! Set your clocks back one hour on Saturday night and enjoy the extra sixty minutes of sleep!!

    Thank You!

    We want to send out a very special ‘Thank You’ to all of those who participated in the Church Work Day last Saturday! The building and grounds look so beautiful, and your hard work is very much appreciated!!

    I love you all,

    Mike

  • Monday Encouragement

    But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are the fragrance of Christ . . . .”2 Corinthians 2:14-15 (ESV)

    My Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

    It’s a stinky world out there for sure!

    The other day I was discussing our current national situation with a brother in the Lord. He made the comment that after he has watched the evening news, or caught up with the latest headlines on the Internet, he feels the need to take a shower!

    Perhaps you’ve felt that way too! To use the terms employed by the Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians, there is an aroma of death that hovers over our world like a putrid fog.

    Of course, it has been this way since the Garden of Eden. And from that time forward, the garbage pile of mankind’s sins against God has been inching higher and higher. And the stench emanating from that heap of depravity is ever more potent and nauseating. We’ve certainly made a big mess of things, and the smell of our rebellion gives us away despite our attempts to hide our sins from the One who is our Creator.

    But, there is something else going on today that we need to wrap our hearts and minds around.

    There is another smell, or “ fragrance” as Paul terms it, wafting upward and outward from this lost world. And the inspired Apostle defines this scent as, “ the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him [Christ] in every place.” And the surprising origin of this blessed aroma is the Bride of Christ as she exists in this world! That is, “ we are the fragrance of Christ” (v. 15).

    With this amazing truth in view, we find today’s encouragement.

    Our Heavenly Father is faithfully transforming our lives into the very image of His Son (v. 18). And as He does, there is something like a “ sweet aroma” (NASB) rising from us that stands in stark contrast to the stench of this old world. It’s as if the process of decay is being reversed by His sovereign grace at work in our hearts, and death is giving way to life more and more! In a greater way each and every day, we are giving off the “ fragrance” of our Savior’s life as the Spirit of God sanctifies us, replacing the death we once knew with the life we now have!

    Although it may sound a bit crude to put it this way, the fact is that we are smelling more like Jesus each day! And with this holy aroma flowing from our lives, there is hope for the world!

    We are living proof that life can come from death by the power of God’s saving grace experienced in His Beloved Son! We who were once dead and decaying are now alive in Him! Like Lazarus, the once overpowering odor of our spiritual death is being eradicated. And there remains only the pleasant aromatic evidence of eternal life in Christ!

    Yes, our world is a stinky mess! It is a vast graveyard to be sure. But our Lord has placed us here in the middle of it in order that we might bear witness to the greatest miracle of all–death surrendering to life! And, as this passage suggests, our witness is not only with our mouths as we confess that Christ is Lord, it is also by means of our presence and daily service to our King as we simply give off the sweet “ fragrance” of life eternal!

    So take courage in this! The Lord has you exactly where He wants you! And wherever you go today, and whatever you do, you are “ the sweet aroma” of the “ knowledge” of our Dear Savior! And even more, He is always leading you in triumph! You share His universal victory, and nothing can change that!

    So, let’s go spray a little perfume for the glory of our King!

    I love you all so dearly,

    Mike

    Sermon Preview:

    Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” John 12:21

    Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

    I remember one day, perhaps when I was about nine or ten years of age, I was standing before the mirror in my parent’s bathroom. And if I recall correctly, I was about to ‘practice shaving,’ just as I had seen my Dad perform this daily routine so many times. Just like Dad, I filled the basin with warm water, shook the can of shave cream, and began to apply it to my face (instead of a real razor, I was making use of a plastic picnic knife).

    Then, as I looked back up at the mirror, I was startled to see Dad standing behind me. He was grinning ear-to-ear. And that’s when I noticed something: I looked just like him! That morning, I saw in myself his very reflection. I was, in that moment, a smaller version of my Father. There were differences, for sure. But the similarities were obvious to me even at such a young age.

    If you had been there to witness that scene, your eyes also would have traveled from me, the smaller reflection, to my Dad, the larger reality.

    Now, I bring all of this up because this is what we are dealing with in Hebrews 5:1-4.

    The author of the Epistle is telling us all about Israel’s high priests, including their selection, calling, duties, and qualifications. But behind them, ‘in the mirror’ so to speak, is a much larger reality–our Lord Jesus Christ, the Great High Priest!

    The Old Covenant priests look much like the Great High Priest in many ways. While there are significant differences, there is an obvious resemblance! And if we can look at them carefully, taking in all that Scripture tells us about their role and office, we will know more about the One who stands behind them!

    As guided by this passage from Hebrews 5, we will be led to look carefully at Israel’s high priests, and then to gaze past them, to the greater Reality they foreshadow. Stated simply, if we want to understand Jesus and who is for us, we need to understand the Old Testament, especially its picture of Israel’s priests!

    What a joy it will be to worship together this Lord’s Day, and to explore this inspired Word from our God! For we too, “ wish to see Jesus”!

    I love you all, with all of my heart!

    Mike

  • Monday Encouragement

    Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ our Lord,

    “. . . I saw seven golden lampstands; and in the middle of the lampstands one like a son of man. . . . .”Revelation 1:1-2

    Let me first apologize for being a day late with this week’s Monday Encouragement from the Word. Persistent internet difficulties at our home have plagued us for some time now. So while a day late, perhaps we’re not a dollar short!

    The mere mention of the Book of Revelation brings to the surface a number of thoughts, opinions, and even emotions. Despite the Epistle’s apparent popularity, it remains a New Testament letter that many believers are intimidated by and, as a result, largely stay away from.

    On the surface, it seems much too complicated as it is an apocalyptic book, filled with graphic images, perplexing symbols, and enigmatic references to the Old Testament. To be sure, it is a difficult book to understand, if only because it is written in the language of the Old Testament. John, the inspired author, shrouded his letter to the seven churches of ancient Asia-Minor in the clothing of the Old Covenant Scriptures. He did so in order to protect his readers from imperial persecution.

    Aside from the amazing visual imagery discovered in this Epistle, there is one central theme that should never be lost as we navigate its pages. That theme is expressed in the words from chapter one quoted above.

    As you know, the letter was addressed to seven local churches in the Roman empire. Each congregation was unique in many ways, for they existed in different imperial cities, had different needs and problems, were at various stages of spiritual maturity, and required a specific message from Jesus through the Apostle John.

    But one thing they all had in common was their need for encouragement.Each of the little churches was under the threat of persecution from the hostile powers around them, both local and national.Harassment, if not persecution, was a daily threat, and with it the temptation to compromise their commitment to the Lordship of the one and only true King there is, our exalted Lord Jesus. So the Epistle commences with a most uplifting vision, which John describes in chapter one.

    He sees “ seven golden lampstands,” which represent each of the seven churches (see v. 20). Then he observes someone whose appearance is like that of “ a son of man.” This phrase identifies the mysterious figure as no other than Jesus Himself (see the further descriptions of Him in vv. 13-16). But then he reports that in this vison, the exalted Son of God is “ in the middle of the lampstands” (v. 13).This image is repeated in 2:1 where Jesus is said to be “ the One who walks among the seven golden lampstands.” Here we find the central message of the letter, and our encouragement for this week.

    Where is Jesus now?

    Well, we know that He reigning from heaven as the Lord and King of all. We also know that He is ever before the Father’s throne, serving as our Intercessor, Advocate, and High Priest.

    But this is not all! While this fact defies our limited knowledge and understanding, it is also true that He is in the middle of His churches even now!It is here, with us, that He walks!

    This means that when we gather together, bound by His love, by our common confession of His Lordship, and by our vows of membership, He is with us, right in the very middle of our fellowship!

    • He is with Christ Presbyterian Church as we worship Him together.
    • He is with us as we serve Him, and declare His Word.
    • He is with us as we bear witness to Him in our community.
    • He is with us through all of the hills and valleys of life together as His redeemed Bride.

    But, He is also with each of us as individual members of His body.

    • He walks with us everywhere, always.
    • He is in the middle of everything we do and experience.
    • He sees and knows everything about us.
    • He never leaves us alone, not even for a second!
    • He is with us in our pains and sorrows, just as He is in all of our joys.
    • He is with us as we are tempted, and as we fight the fight of faith.

    He has permanently stationed Himself in the midst of those whom He loves with a love inexpressible!

    There is nothing more encouraging than this!

    So be of good courage today and this week. You are loved. You are protected. You are treasured. And you are never alone!And the same goes for His little church here in Hampton Cove! The Son of God walks among us, and that’s really all we need to know!

    I love you so very much, each and every one!

  • Order of Worship – October 18 2020

    Call to Worship:  Psalm 96:1-4

    1 Oh sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth!
    2 Sing to the Lord, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day.
    3 Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples!
    4 For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods.

    Prayer of Adoration: From Psalm 92

    Pastor: It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to your name, O Most High;
    People: To declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night, to the music of the lute and the harp, to the melody of the lyre.
    Pastor: For you, O Lord, have made me glad by your work; at the works of your hands I sing for joy!
    People: How great are your works, O Lord!

    Why are you so full of heaviness, Why are you disquieted within
    Oh my soul, Oh my soul

    Oh my God, Oh my God

    CHORUS:
    Put your trust in God, I will yet give thanks to Him
    Put your trust in God, I will yet give thanks to Him
    Put your trust in God, I will yet give thanks to Him
    My Help, my God

    Deep goes unto deep like ocean waves, All your floods and rapids on me break
    Oh my soul, Oh my soul
    I will say unto my God, my strength, How it is you have forgotten me
    Oh how long, Oh how long

    Confession of Faith: The Heidelberg Catechism

    Q. How does Christ’s ascension into heaven benefit us?

    A. First, He is our Advocate in heaven before His Father. Second, we have our flesh in heaven as a sure pledge that He, our Head, will also take us, His members, up to Himself. Third, He sends us His Spirit as a counter-pledge, by whose power we seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God, and not the things that are on earth.

    Sermon Preview:

    Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

    If you took just a moment to read Hebrews 5:1-6, you might be tempted to think, ‘Here we go again!’

    What you find in these verses is yet another treatment of the grand theme of our Lord’s superior priesthood. As you know this is a subject that the author of the Epistle has been addressing since 2:17 where, for the first time, he speaks of Jesus as a “ high priest.” And then, as we have recently seen, this subject is explored in detail in 4:14-16 with the chapter concluding with the summons to “ draw near with confidence to the throne of grace.”

    Chapter 5 seems to start all over again with an emphasis upon the priestly ministry of Jesus on our behalf. And this subject matter will be on the ‘front burner’ all the way through 10:25! And if I have counted correctly, there are no less than 39 reference to priests and the priesthood found in the thirteen chapters of this letter!

    So why is this the case? Why the repetition of this theme? Why all of the exhaustive details about the work of the Old Testament priests? After all, isn’t this a New Covenant book, and isn’t the author addressing Christians? And maybe the bigger question on your mind is, ‘Do we really need to hear more sermons about the priesthood, the offerings and sacrifices, and such?’

    If that last question is on your mind, let me encourage you not to feel too guilty about it. While you’re asking that one, I’m asking if I really need to preach all of this yet again!

    Well, despite our questions about this re-emphasis and repetition, we must remember (and believe!) that all of this about the priesthood is found here because, like the first readers of this Epistle, we need it! There are treasures here that will enrich our lives as flowers of Jesus. There is help here. There is profound encouragement here. There is exactly what we all need and must have today, yet to be discovered in these inspired words!

    So, here we go again. But I can assure you that our journey through this key section of the letter will be anything but boring!

    I love you with all my heart!

    Mike

  • Monday Encouragement

    “ No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. Therefore, my beloved, flee . . . .” 1 Corinthians 10:13-14

    Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

    Today’s encouragement from the Scriptures comes from the first of Paul’s two letters to the Church at Corinth. And in these inspired words discovered in 10:13-14, we find one of the strongest encouragements in all of the Bible.

    If you take a moment or two in order to get familiar with the context, you’ll see that this word of encouragement is set within the larger framework of a warning about falling into sin, the kind of sins that the Old Testament Israelites were guilty of, especially the sin of  idolatry (10:1-22). One commentary suggests that this is primarily a “ warning against complacency and overconfidence” on the part of the professing believers there in the great city of Corinth. And this prideful self-dependence would ultimately reveal itself in the practice of pagan worship.

    But it is the word of consolation and hope that we want to focus upon today.  And we see it in two phrases from this passage. First, “ No temptation has overtaken you that is not commonto man,” and second, “ God is faithful, and he will not let you be temptedbeyond your ability.”

    In the first place, we learn here that the temptations and struggles we face each day are not at all unique!  Perhaps it’s just human nature to assume that our particular points of weakness, vulnerability, and spiritual failure are exceptional, and that there are few believers who can understand them, or who have even experienced them at all.

    Do you ever feel that way? In a moment of weakness, or when you actually succumb to a temptation, do you ever get the sense that you are alone in this, and that no other children of the Father have ever been tempted in such a way, or have ever yielded to it?  Do you ever think, ‘No one has the weaknesses I have,’ or ‘No one is as afflicted as me,’ or ‘Other believers don’t struggle with this like I do, or have to face such awful challenges’?

    I would imagine that we can all answer this question in the affirmative!  We’ve all felt terribly alone and isolated in our tribulations and battles with sin.  And I would go so far as to even suggest that this is one of the things that is so insidious about temptation. It seems to always alienate. Despite the exact nature of the temptation, be it greed or lust or idolatry, it always attempts to disconnect us from our Father and from others, leaving us alone and often seeking to hide.  And so we feel isolated. And we embrace the false notion that no one suffers with us in this exact way, no one else deals with our issues, and no one can relate to our particular pains and afflictions. And, sadly, this defective assumption leads us further down the road to even greater misery as we come to embrace the lie that our Lord and Savior has also turned away from us in our most acute time of need.

    Well, here is where we must joyfully claim and resolutely believe the beautiful and eternal truth that we find in the words of the Apostle.

    In the first place, Paul explains to us that there is absolutely “ no temptation” or struggle that we might possibly face that is truly unique!  The sins that often overtake us are “ common” to all believers. Some of the details may certainly be distinctive, but the core temptations are all the same for everyone, no exceptions!

    Now, if I may speak personally here, this really makes a huge difference to me. I find great encouragement in knowing that the temptations and wars that I face each day have confronted all of God’s people through the ages! That means that people like Abraham, Sarah, Moses, and David in the Old Testament, and Paul, Peter, and Timothy in the New Testament, all walked the same pathway of temptation as I am on! There is really nothing exceptional about what I am currently dealing with.  Thus, I am not alone in my battles, or in my frequent failures! I am always surrounded by a great company of saints (and not just the dead ones, but my fellow-believers today) who can fully identify with me in my afflictions and conflicts. Every redeemed child of God has traveled on this same road of discipleship, one that is fraught with difficulty.  And together, we will do so until that great Day that our Lord and King appears for a second time!

    But then, there is another aspect of our assurance and encouragement for times of temptation. And it is this: Our Father in Heaven, who is perfectly “ faithful,” will never permit us to be “ tempted” beyond what we are able to endure as we are empowered by His Spirit!  He Himself “ will not let you be tempted” in such a way that you are hopelessly overwhelmed!  In the words of Dr. Simon Kistemaker, “ What a relief to know that God has set limits!”

    Among other things, this certainly means that our Dear Father exercises His complete sovereignty over all of our afflictions, troubles, temptations, and trials! Admittedly, this involves a profound and impenetrable mystery, but it is nonetheless true enough! Our Great God and Father has, as it were, set His loving and immovable boundaries around us, and nothing may touch our lives that does not first conform to His will and ultimately achieve His eternal purposes for us!

    So, in the end, your story, that of your walk with Christ through the valley of affliction and trial, is really not unusual at all. Others walk with you, just as others have walked this road before you, and this has been the case since God first called out and redeemed His Covenant people. And today, you, like every saint in Christ’s body, are also protected by your Father’s mighty and loving hand. He is the eternal Governor of every aspect and detail of your existence, even your temptations and wars!

    Find your hope on this new Monday in these truths!  And then, as you embrace them by faith, do what you must do . . . “ flee”!  Run away from temptation, and run toward your Savior! And when you do, you will know in your own experience that we are “ more than conquerors though Him who loved us”! (Romans 8:37).

    May our Lord bless you all with His great peace as you serve Him today!

    I love you so very much, and joyfully labor for you in my every prayer,

    Mike

  • Order of Worship – October 11 2020

    Call to Worship:  From Psalm 23

    Pastor: The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
    People: He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.
    Pastor: He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.
    People: Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
    Pastor: You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
    People: Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever!

    Prayer of Adoration:

    Song: And Can It Be – Hymn 455 v.1,3-5

    1 And can it be that I should gain
    an int’rest in the Savior’s blood?
    Died he for me, who caused his pain?
    For me, who him to death pursued?
    Amazing love! How can it be
    that thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

    Refrain:
    Amazing love! How can it be
    that thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

    3 He left his Father’s throne above
    (so free, so infinite his grace!),
    humbled himself (so great his love!)
    and bled for all his chosen race!
    ‘Tis mercy all, immense and free,
    for, O my God, it found out me! [Refrain]

    4 Long my imprisoned spirit lay
    fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
    thine eye diffused a quick’ning ray;
    I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
    my chains fell off, my heart was free;
    I rose, went forth, and followed thee. [Refrain]

    5 No condemnation now I dread;
    Jesus, and all in him, is mine!
    Alive in him, my living Head,
    and clothed in righteousness divine,
    bold I approach th’eternal throne,
    and claim the crown, through Christ, my own. [Refrain]

    The Old Testament Lesson:  Isaiah 25:6-9

    Confession of Faith: The Heidelberg Catechism

    Q. Why is there added [in the Apostle’s Creed]: “He descended into hell”?

    A. In my greatest sorrows and temptations I may be assured and comforted that my Lord Jesus Christ, by His unspeakable anguish, pain, terror, and agony, which He endured throughout all His sufferings but especially on the cross, has delivered me from the anguish and torment of hell.

    The New Testament Lesson: Philippians 4:4-9

    Song: All Things New – CCLI #5448157

    Come Lord and tarry not; bring the long looked for day;
    O why these years of waiting here, these ages of decay?
    Come for thy saints still wait; daily ascends their sigh;
    The Spirit and the Bride say “Come”, dost thou not hear the cry?

    CHORUS:
    O come and make all things new, come and make all things new
    O come and make all things new, build up this ruined Earth,
    Come and make all things new

    Come for creation groans, impatient of thy stay
    Worn out with these long years of ill, these ages of delay.
    Come for love waxes cold, its steps are faint and slow;
    Faith now is lost in unbelief, Hope’s lamp burns dim and low.

    Prayer for the Church:  Matthew Elliott, Ruling Elder.

    The Sermon: “Confidence at the Throne of Grace.”  Hebrews 4:16. Dr. Michael Calvert, Teaching Elder.

    Confession of Sin:

    Assurance of Pardon: Micah 7:7

    But as for me, I watch in hope for the Lord, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me

    *Communion:

    Song: In Christ Alone – CCLI #3350395

    In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song;
    this Cornerstone, this solid Ground, firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
    What heights of love, what depths of peace, when fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
    My Comforter, my All in All, here in the love of Christ I stand.

    In Christ alone! who took on flesh, Fullness of God in helpless babe!
    This gift of love and righteousness, Scorned by the ones he came to save:
    Till on that cross as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied
    For every sin on Him was laid; Here in the death of Christ I live.

    There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain:
    Then bursting forth in glorious Day, Up from the grave he rose again!
    And as He stands in victory, Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me,
    For I am His and He is mine, Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

    No guilt in life, no fear in death, This is the power of Christ in me;
    From life’s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny.
    No power of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand;
    Till He returns or calls me home, Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand.

    The Benediction: From Philippians 4:19-20

    May our God meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen!

    Sermon Preview:

    Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

    Thank you so very much for praying for us while we were recently away in Kentucky. I am especially grateful for Dr. Bud, Mathew, and Rev. Jim who so faithfully ministered to you in my absence last Lord’s Day!

    This coming Sunday our sermon text will be Hebrews 4:16. This final verse of the fourth chapter brings the subject of Christ’s high priestly ministry to a most significant and encouraging summit. Here we find our Father’s invitation to “ approach” His holy “ throne” with “ confidence,” knowing that, as we do, we shall always receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

    Perhaps there is no other verse in all of Scripture that supplies us with such a profound summons to seek our Father’s face in prayer as this one inspired passage! And I can’t wait to discover all that the Lord has for us as we hear the proclamation of His Word!

    This Week’s Sunday School Topic

    For those who are attending our class on Understanding the Times, our subject this week will be ‘Constructing a Biblical View of Race.’ As you know, the words ‘race’ and ‘racism’ are found in abundance in everyday conversation. But what do these terms really mean? And how does the Christian/Biblical worldview define them? And, furthermore, how are these concepts connected to the anti-Christian philosophies that are seeking ascendency today? Be sure and download the class outline from the Church website.

    I love you all so very much!

    Mike

  • Order of Worship – October 4 2020

    Call to Worship:  Psalm 70.  Trinity Hymnal p. 810

    Pastor: Hasten, O God, to save me; O Lord, come quickly to help me.
    People: May those who seek my life be put to shame and confusion;
    Pastor: may all who desire my ruin be turned back in disgrace.
    People: May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!” turn back because of their shame.
    Pastor: But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you;
    People: may those who love your salvation always say, “Let God be exalted!”
    Pastor: Yet I am poor and needy; come quickly to me, O God.
    People: You are my help and my deliverer; O Lord, do not delay.

    Prayer of Adoration:

    Song: Stricken, Smitten, And Afflicted – Hymn 257 v.1-4

    Stricken, smitten, and afflicted, see him dying on the tree!
    ‘Tis the Christ by man rejected; yes, my soul, ’tis he, ’tis he!
    ‘Tis the long-expected Prophet, David’s Son, yet David’s Lord;
    by his Son God now has spoken: ’tis the true and faithful Word.

    Tell me, ye who hear him groaning, was there ever grief like his?
    Friends thro’ fear his cause disowning, foes insulting his distress;
    many hands were raised to wound him, none would interpose to save;
    but the deepest stroke that pierced him was the stroke that Justice gave.

    Ye who think of sin but lightly nor suppose the evil great
    here may view its nature rightly, here its guilt may estimate.
    Mark the sacrifice appointed, see who bears the awful load;
    ’tis the Word, the Lord’s Anointed, Son of Man and Son of God.

    Here we have a firm foundation, here the refuge of the lost;
    Christ’s the Rock of our salvation, his the name of which we boast.
    Lamb of God, for sinners wounded, sacrifice to cancel guilt!
    None shall ever be confounded who on him their hope have built.

    The Old Testament Lesson:  Isaiah 5:13-17

    Prayer of Confession:

    Assurance of Pardon: Romans 5:2

    Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

    The New Testament Lesson: Philippians 3:17-21

    Prayer for the Church:  Crawford Dillon, Ruling Elder.

    The Sermon: “Our Great Physician.”  Luke 5:27-32. Matthew Elliott, Ruling Elder.

    Confession of Faith: The Apostles’ Creed. Trinity Hymnal, p. 845.

    *Communion:

    Song: Be Unto Your Name – CCLI# 2177476

    We are a moment, You are forever, Lord of the Ages, God before time
    We are a vapor, You are eternal, Love everlasting, reigning on high

    Holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Worthy is the lamb who was slain
    Highest praises, honor and glory, Be unto Your name, be unto Your
