I can do all things through Him who strengthens me”–Philippians 4:13 (NASB).

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I would suspect that not only have you committed to memory the words of the Apostle Paul quoted above, you have also frequently uttered them aloud, or at least whispered them under your breath in a time of adversity. This verse is one of a handful of memorable lines and passages found in the Philippian letter (see 1:21, 2:13, 3:7, 3:12-14, 4:4-7, and 4:19 for some examples).

But as you know, there is an inherent, but often unappreciated, danger in memorizing Bible verses without taking into account their original context. And this great verse seems to be especially vulnerable to interpretation in an isolated sense, deployed without allowing its setting to shed light on the true intention of the author. It’s so easy to say, “ I can do all things through Christ,” but without recognizing what the Apostle actually had in mind by the words “ all things.”

If we glance back up to verses 11-12, the “ things” of which Paul speaks are identified. They are first categorized under the general heading of “ whatever circumstances” we might be in (v. 11). Then, they are more directly identified as getting along with “ humble means” or living “ in prosperity,” “ being filled” as well as “ going hungry,” and then “ having abundance” or “ suffering need” (v. 12). Then in verse 14, Paul mentions “ affliction.”

In verse 11 we also see that when Paul says “ I can do,” he means by “ do” the ability to “ be content in whatever circumstances I am in” (v. 11). The Phillips Translation brilliantly captures this linkage:

. . . I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

What the Apostle seems to be saying is that by the strength that His Lord abundantly supplies, he could live with contentment, peace, and joy as he endured the swinging pendulum of divine providence.

As you know, this letter was composed while Paul was suffering the first of his two imprisonments in the imperial city of Rome. Daily, he was bouncing between the radically opposed prospects of martyrdom and release (1:21-26), life and death, all the while rejoicing in the Lord, and fully content in the assurance that his painful “ circumstances have turned out for the greater progress of the gospel” (1:12).

Perhaps better than anyone, Paul knew that the life of a Christian disciple is one of such stark opposites: satisfaction and hunger, pain and healing, freedom and bondage, abundance and abject poverty, and even life and death. Such are the unseen and unfathomable ways of God. Our Father’s wise plans for us take us all through such extremes as these. And this fact is well-demonstrated throughout the Old and New Testament Scriptures.

Every saint one could name has lived between such disparate, drastically contrasting boundaries. Each has experienced the sometimes violent swings between having it all and losing it all. As Job confessed early on in his journey down ‘Providence Avenue,’ “ the Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord” (Job 1:21).

It is, then, the ability to “ be content” in all “ circumstances,” especially those experiences that exist at life’s polar opposites, that we “ can do through Him who strengthens us.” In Christ, we each possess the ever-abundant supply of divine power to endure, and even joyfully embrace, whatever comes from our Father’s hands.

Of course, a fuller understanding of this truth demands that we define ‘contentment.’ The larger context of the letter reveals that as Paul deploys this word “ content,” he means:

    • Living with joy in all experiences as we walk with our Lord.
    • Living with peace in every circumstance that our Father’s plan brings about.
    • Living with trust in the unflagging love and faithfulness of our Father, even at the boundaries of His providence.
    • Living with confidence that God’s greater purposes shall be accomplished.

To “ be content in whatever circumstances” our Father brings to us–that’s what we “ can do though Him who strengthens us”!

It is true enough that there will always be twists and turns for us as we follow our Lord. A good number of these will be severe, even treacherous, and will challenge us at many levels. But every turn in the road, every straight stretch of highway, every ascent, and every descent, is wisely and lovingly governed by our Great God and Father! And by His grace and strength, we can remain content, at peace, full of joy, always giving Him thanks, and fully confident that we will arrive at the destination He has ordained for us!

May all of this bring you great encouragement on this new Monday!

I love you all, with all of my heart,

    Mike

    Sermon Preview:

My Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I have always been intrigued by the clever title of a wonderful book on preaching by Dr. Robert Smith Jr., professor of preaching at Beeson Divinity School (in Birmingham, AL). He calls it, Doctrine That Dances: Bringing Doctrinal Preaching and Teaching to Life.

The main point that Dr. Smith so brilliantly makes is that the great doctrines of the Christin faith must be proclaimed, believed, and put into practice. As he says it, the Christian faith must not only be about believing in “ the streets of gold in heaven” (doctrine), but must have something vital to do with “ the pavement” upon which we now walk (practice). The New Jerusalem above must be united with Hampton Cove and Huntsville here below!

Well, this is what we are trying to do with our series of messages from Romans 12. We are seeking to better understand that critical and essential link between heaven and earth. To use Dr. Smith’s language, our doctrine must dance!

This Sunday and the next two (July 4 and 11), we are going to be ‘slow dancing’ though Romans 12:1-2. It would be difficult to name another two-verse section of the New Testament more densely packed with truth than this passage! So we’re going to take our sweet time as we examine every word.

Our focus this Sunday will be upon our “ bodies” (v. 1). We will discover the critical importance of our physical flesh and blood for our daily Christian walk (or our ‘dance’!).

Don’t Forget! There Will Be a Special Q&A Opportunity With the Building Committee Immediately Following Worship This Sunday

Please stay for a few minutes after worship for a time of questions and answers with our Building Committee. They will be happy to address any questions or concerns that you may have about the plans for the construction of a new Education Annex. And please continue to pray that the Building Committee, our Diaconate, and the Session might have God’s wisdom as we consider this plan.

I love you all so much and pray for you always!

things into which angels long to look”–1 Peter 1:12

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We really don’t know much about those creatures which the Word of God calls “ angels.” Australian theologian Dr. Graham Cole notes that the term angels “broadly considered covers all sorts of spiritual beings, from seraphim to archangels to Satan to demons” ( Against the Darkness, 31). And because the Bible supplies us with precious little information about these spiritual creatures, we need to consider them (and draw our conclusions about them) with a great degree of humility.

From Genesis to Revelation, we find angels mentioned over 80 times, sprinkled here and there in the unfolding drama of redemption as it flows from creation to consummation. Of course, we do know that there are elect angels and fallen angels (see 1 Tim. 5:21). There are those angels who rebelled with Satan against God, and those that did not.

I’ve often wondered what it must be like for those “ elect angels” (which Paul mentions to Timothy, 1 Tim. 5:21). Imagine what they see, what they experience, what they hear, and what they know! I am especially curious about those angelic creatures depicted so strangely in Isaiah 6. There, they are called the “ Seraphim” (6:2), and they minister to the Lord in His heavenly temple. Their appearance is, in a word, rather bizarre! They have six wings each; two shielding their faces, two covering their feet, and two with which they fly.

All of this makes Peter’s passing comment so startling! If you take time to read 1 Peter 1:1-11 you’ll discover that the context of this claim about the angels is a description of the glory of our salvation, which our Savior has accomplished for us in His magnificent grace.

Peter summarizes our salvation in verses 3-4 as, “ a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,” and as receiving “ an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven.”

Now, it is precisely into this salvation that the angles of God “ long to look”!

So, let’s think for a moment or two about what this claim by the Apostle Peter really means in practical terms.

It means that even the “ elect angels” . . .

Are not made in the image and likeness of God.

They are not loved by our Father like we are.

They know nothing of God’s infinite mercy and amazing grace.

Christ’s blood was not shed for them to accomplish their full forgiveness and everlasting redemption.

They have no experiential knowledge of being born again.

They cannot pray “ Our Father in Heaven,” and they have no experience with answered prayer (Matt. 6:9).

They have no ‘personal’ relationship with our Father in heaven.

They are not led daily in the “ paths of righteousness” (Ps. 23:3).

They are not filled with the Holy Spirit.

They cannot cry out “ Abba! Father!” (Rom. 8:14).

They have no Intercessor and Great High Priest representing them before the Father.

They do not experience the eternal hope we possess in Christ.

They are not blessed with the “ peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension” (Phil. 4:7).

They are not destined to be “ conformed to the image” of God’s Son (Rom. 8:29).

And if we had time, we could add many other things to this list.

But now we can at least begin to understand why Peter made such a statement. The angles of heaven have nothing on us!

I believe Peter reveals what is, perhaps, the most significant difference between us and the angels, at least in terms of our daily lives. In 1 Peter 1:8 he tells us that right now, even in this life, with all of its perplexities, temptations, trials, and sorrows (1:6-7), we have a privilege that no angel could ever know. Even now, we “ greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory”!

Imagine that! The angles who serve our Great King are looking at us now and marveling that we, redeemed sinners, have such an incalculable, unimaginable joy at our disposal! It is a joy that leads to rejoicing at all times, in all places, and in all circumstances! It is a joy that only the Bride of Christ may share, the very joy of our Savior Himself!

On this new Monday I pray that you will outdo the angels and further stoke their curiosity! I pray that our Lord’s joy will fill your hearts, and that as the heavenly hosts witness the drama of our redemption unfolding, that they will join us in giving praise to God for such a great salvation!

    I love you so dearly!

    Mike

PS: Thank you for praying for us while we were away on vacation. The Lord blessed us with a special time of refreshment. I am also very grateful for Rev. Jim Daughtry and Rev. Dieter Paulson who preached in my absence.

    Sermon Preview:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This coming Lord’s Day we will begin our series of messages on Romans 12.

Romans 12:1 is certainly one of the most well-known and frequently quoted verses in all of Scripture. Its urgent summons to all professing believers in Christ is set forth in simple terms:

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”

When we consider this one line of inspired Scripture, there are two places in it to which our eyes seem to be directed.

First is the word “ therefore.” And this term forces us to look back to all that has gone before in chapters 1-11 of the letter.

The second point of focus is the phrase “ living sacrifice.” And with this, we are directed to consider our present and future lives as those whom God’s amazing and powerful grace has eternally redeemed.

We might say that there is a huge question suggested when we get to 12:1–

Now that we have been saved by grace though faith in Christ, how are we to live?

For the next twelve weeks this summer, we will follow along with the Apostle Paul as he answers this question in the most practical of ways.

This Sunday, we will survey the landscape of chapter 12, familiarizing ourselves with the great emphases and themes that arise in these verses. And then, on the following Sundays, we will discover the answer to this one essential question having to do with how saving grace is to be put on display in everyday life.

I can’t wait to gather with you on the Lord’s Day with open Bibles and hearts aflame with love for our Great King and Savior!

I love you all so very much,

    Mike

    Sermon Preview:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Beginning today through June 19, Carol and I will be away on vacation. We are so grateful that you have provided this opportunity for us, and we look forward to enjoying a time of rest and refreshment.

In my absence, it will be our privilege to have Rev. Jim Daughtry and Rev. Dieter Paulson preaching for us over the next two Sundays.

This coming Lord’s Day, Jim will be preaching from Jeremiah 9:23-24. His message is entitled “ The Self-Revelation of God.”

Then on June 13, Dieter will be preaching a sermon entitled “ Grace in Lament” from Psalm 77. As you will remember, since 2017 Dieter has served as the planter and pastor of Redeemer Church (PCA) in Scottsboro. He has been married to his wonderful wife, Marty, a native of Foley, Alabama, for 22 years. They have four children, Gracie (21), Tanner (20), Mary (15), and Georgia (13).

Please pray for these two faithful brothers and servants of the Lord as they deliver God’s Word to us.

The Lord willing, I will return to the pulpit on June 20, and on that Sunday we will begin our Twelve-Week Summer Preaching Series on Roman 12. Our first message in this series will come from Romans 12:1.

May our Lord keep you in His tender care, and I love you all so dearly and pray for you constantly!

    Mike

A note from Amanda, our Nursery Coordinator:

First, a huge thank you to those you have volunteered in our nursery during Sunday worship over the past couple of months. It has been a great blessing to our children, nursery staff, and families.

I have created a new sign up extending through the summer months so please click on the link below if you would like to help in the nursery in the coming weeks. Don’t forget our new worship schedule this summer! Since service will begin at 9:30 as of May 30th, we ask that you arrive in the nursery at 9:15 to help welcome our children in. More details can be viewed on the sign up page.

If you have any questions or comments, please reach out to Amanda Dean or Ashley Turnbull. It has been such a blessing as a parent to see our church as a whole lovingly take part in helping raise our children in a way that points them to their Creator. Thank you all!

    Love,
    Amanda Dean
