    Sermon Preview:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As 2021 comes to an end, our minds quite naturally anticipate all that might happen in the twelve months of the New Year. Days like today are typically characterized by the contemplation of resolutions, proposed changes, alterations, and renewed commitments and goals that will improve our lives as time marches forward.

I believe it is a very good and wise thing to consider what we might do better, more faithfully, or with greater zeal as the New Year commences. This is especially vital as we consider our corporate life together as the Body of Christ, and as individual disciples of the Lord Jesus as well.

For several weeks now, a passage from the Epistle to the Philippians has been on my heart as I have pondered the end of 2021 and the start of 2022. While certainly not thinking of New Year’s resolutions, Paul was surely contemplating what should be the main focus of his life, and that of all the redeemed of Christ. Consider what he wrote in Philippians 3:10

that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and may share His sufferings, becoming like Him in his death.”

For the imprisoned Apostle of Christ, the greatest aim of his life was to “know” the One he called “Christ Jesus my Lord” (3:8).

If I could be permitted to speculate a bit, I would venture that if Paul had written down a New Year’s resolution, it would be this very thing. He would simply seek to “know” His Lord!

For the next two Sunday’s we are going to take this passage from Philippians as our sermon text. And we will prayerfully walk with the Apostle as he explains what this could mean; that he would “know” Christ Jesus his Lord. I believe that in these inspired words we will discover the best New Year’s resolution of all!

Remember, Sunday School Resumes On January 9th at 9:30 AM

There will be no Sunday School this week. On January 9 we will begin our Winter/Spring semester of Christian education.

Our Adults will be studying ‘The Attributes of God,’ based upon the book The Identity and Attributes of God, by Terry L. Johnson (Banner of Truth: 2019). I’ll share more about the details of our class next week, but for now please plan to join us for this study of our great and awesome God!

I love you all so much,

    Mike

    Children’s Ministry:

I hope you all had a wonderful advent season and are filled with hope and encouragement as we get ready to face a new year. I have created a new nursery volunteer sign up for the first quarter of 2022.

We invite any lady aged 13-113 who is a member of Christ Pres to volunteer to help our nursery staff during worship service on Sundays. We have been operating with one nursery and have had anywhere from 2-8 children in our nursery. Due to potential large numbers, we are adding an additional volunteer slot. With fewer than 6 children, one volunteer will be dismissed to worship.

Please follow the link below to sign up. On the day(s) you are signed up, you will report to the nursery at 10:15 to help greet our littles as they arrive. Amanda or Ashley will be there to get you started and Mrs. Irene, our nursery worker, will be there the duration of the service.

Signup Genius sends you a reminder two days out so you won’t forget!

    Sermon Preview:

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

We look forward to gathering tonight at 5:00 PM for our annual Christmas Eve Service of Worship and Communion!

As we have done for many years now on this special night, we will read Scripture lessons together, sing the songs of Christmas, and share in the Lord’s Supper.

Our brief sermon at the Lord’s Table will be taken from the promise of John 10:28-29 where our blessed Savior, the “Great Shepherd,” gives us the precious gift of everlasting salvation.

Then on Sunday, December 26, our Advent Series will conclude as we consider another magnificent promise of Christmas, that of peace. Our text will be the words of Jesus recorded in John 14:27. In this verse Jesus promises that all who trust in Him will have not just any peace, but His peace!

Also, please remember that there will be No Sunday School on December 26 or January 2.

I hope you will all be able to join us tonight, and please invite friends and family to come with you!

I love you all so very much,

    Mike

    Children’s Ministry:

I pray each of your families is having a fabulous start to the week! Just wanted to update you on a few things as we move towards Christmas!

    • STAFF: We are prayerfully moving towards opening up our baby nursery in January. Would you pray with me for discernment as to hiring? We desire ladies who will love and care for our sweet children while you worship! But, with all the visitors and babies coming, we need both our rooms open. It has been a long process, but we are praying the Lord would bless us by allowing us to hire new staff ASAP.
    • ELECTRONIC CHECK-IN: I am also moving towards implementing a new check-in procedure for our toddlers and babies. We will have a kiosk with the ability to check-in your child, print a label, and affix it to their shirt. This will be a safer way to keep track of our little ones and to know who visitors are!
    • Our Facebook group is a great place to post about a fun outing or activity you plan to do. Invite a friend! Or all your CPC nursery friends 🙂 If you aren’t a member of that group, please let me know.
    • NEW CLASS: Due to the large numbers we have seen in our Sunday school classes, we have started a brand new class with 5th graders. Mr. Joe Fikes will be teaching “Survey of the Bible,” and we could not be more thrilled to disciple these students as they prepare to leave children’s ministry and head to youth ministry. Ben Calvert is teaching the class to finish out the semester. Thank you, Ben!
    • Finally, we are prayerfully looking towards Summer Bible Club for Summer 2022! I am looking for someone to direct or co-direct the program. Please pray about this with me – it is such a wonderful opportunity to serve our church and children! Planning meetings to start in January 🙂

As always, don’t hesitate to call, email, text if you have any questions or concerns. Don’t forget to say hello and/or welcome a guest you see at drop-off/pick-up.

Much love to each of you!

    Sermon Preview:

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This coming Lord’s Day, the Fourth Sunday of Advent, we will consider the words of Jesus that are found in John 14:16-17. It is in this passage from John that we encounter our Savior’s beautiful promise of “the Helper” who will come from the Father.

The power of this promise is only magnified by the setting that John describes beginning in 14:1. Facing the certain departure of their Lord and Master, the disciples are very disturbed and perplexed. It is here that Jesus utters those blessed words that we all so dearly love: “Let not your hearts be troubled.”

Yet, despite the sad reality that very soon Jesus will no longer be with them physically, the disciples will be at no disadvantage at all, and will not be left behind to go it alone. There will be “another Helper” for them!

Who is this “Helper”? When will He come? And what will He do?

What a great joy it will be to discover another ‘Christmas gift’ from Jesus!

I love you all so much, and pray for you always!

What is a Supper Club Group?

    • It is Christ Pres adults, assigned to a group of 4 couples/singles, who will meet together once a month, 4 times in the spring, from Jan. to Apr.
    • One couple/single in each group is responsible to host their group one of these times. You can host the way you feel most comfortable–in your home, at a restaurant, meet for a picnic, etc. Potluck works well so that everyone pitches in with the meal.
    • The assigned lead will communicate with the group to coordinate monthly hosts. From there, each month’s host will arrange the specific date and location for the gathering with other members of the group.
    • The hope is that you will enjoy fellowship and get to know one another on a deeper, more personal level. It’s such a blessing to know our church family, to share meals together, and to be involved in each other’s lives.

    Sermon Preview:

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

This coming Lord’s day we will again ‘look under the Christmas tree,’ so to speak, in order to discover another gift and promise granted to us by our Savior. Throughout Advent, our focus has been upon the wonderful promises that have come to us by virtue of our Lord’s Incarnation. We have already considered the promises of eternal life and living water.

This Sunday we will ‘unwrap’ the gift of freedom.

In John 8:36 our Lord declared that, “if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” But what is this freedom? And what is it liberation from?

As you pray and prepare your heart for worship, take some time to read the larger context of this saying of Jesus. You will discover it in John 8:12-59.

What a joy it will be this Lord’s Day to gather in the Name of our Great King and High Priest!

    Christmas Eve Worship

Two short weeks from tonight we will once again come together on Christmas Eve for our Service of Lessons, Carols, and Communion. It’s almost impossible to believe that this will be our eighth Christmas in our ‘new’ building! Wow! The Lord has been so good to us!

The service will start at 5:00 PM and end by 6:00 PM. And, as always, guests are most welcome!

You are my blessed joy and delight, and I love you all so very much,

    Mike

    Sermon Preview:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This coming Lord’s Day is the Second Sunday of Advent. Our sermon text will be taken from John 7:37-40, and the message is entitled “The Promises of Christmas: Living Water.”

As you spend time in prayer this weekend for our corporate worship, let me encourage you to reflect upon the larger context of our sermon passage, which is John 7:1-36.

As we see in the words of John 7:37-40, one of the major symbols of salvation to be found in both the Old and New Testaments is water. Correspondingly, thirst is a Biblical symbol of man’s alienation from God due to our sin.

In this episode from our Lord’s life, both of these images are beautifully joined to form another one of the great promises of Christmas. I can’t wait to discover it with you this Sunday!

I love you all, and pray for you always!

    Mike

We would like to invite our men to our Fall study on issues of CRT, wokeness, and the response of the evangelical church. Led and taught by Dr. Mike Calvert, we will take several contemporary Christian works as starting points for our study and discussion. Among these works include Voddie Baucham’s Fault Lines: The Social Justice Movement and Evangelicalism’s Looming Catastrophe and Owen Strachan’s Christianity and Wokeness: How the Social Justice Movement is Hijacking the Gospel.

Time – Friday from 11:30 to 12:30. Please bring a bag lunch to enjoy while we study and discuss.

Locale – Church fellowship hall (to attend via Zoom, contact Senior Fellows at seniorfellows@christpreshamptoncove.org

Schedule – We will meet a total of 10 sessions with our first meeting on Friday, September 24th. Our final meeting will be on Friday, December 10th. skipping Friday, October 8th for Fall break.

Please make plans to join us for this important study! If you have any questions, please contact Matthew Elliott at matthew@christpreshamptoncove.org.
