Who is this King of glory?

    Psalm 24:10

    My Beloved Ones in Christ,

Have you ever forgotten what you are doing. . . in the middle of doing it?

Perhaps this is more common the older we get. Yet I’m sure that many of us, for example, have gotten up from the couch, headed to the kitchen to fetch a snack, and then somewhere along that short journey forgotten what we got up for in the first place. While it could be a sign of sleep-deprivation, illness, or creeping age, I suspect it is more a matter of distraction. We really haven’t ‘forgotten,’ we’ve only allowed our minds to be momentarily turned away toward one or more of the other multitudinous thoughts that persistently vie for supreme attention in our brains.

Generally speaking, such lapses into distraction are part and parcel of every-day life and are mostly harmless. But there is one place where such ‘forgetfulness’ is terribly damaging, and also easiest to fall into.

David sets this before us in Psalm 24. This is a psalm about worship, elegantly depicted as ascending “the hill of the Lord” (v. 3). Perhaps it was recited by Israelite worshippers as they made their way up to Jerusalem during one of the Jewish festivals. What’s interesting, however, is that twice in this psalm David raises the question about “Who” it is that the worshippers are really seeking to worship in the first place (vv. 8, 10).

Of course, the answer is “the Lord, strong and mighty” (v. 8), and “the Lord of hosts” (v. 10). Along the way, those making their trip to the holy city need to remind themselves that they are servants and worshippers of the One who is, indeed, “The LORD” and “the King of glory.”

Crazy, isn’t it! Worshippers forgetting, or losing sight of, the very One they are worshipping!

On this new Monday, let’s consider briefly how this inspired reminder helps us as we worship and serve our great King and Savior.

First, this psalm is instructive about more than just Sunday morning worship. Of course, we face the very real danger of losing track of what we are doing as we worship each Lord’s Day. Going through the motions of worship is a persistent temptation. But we need to expand the application of this psalm to how we live from Monday through Saturday.

In the New Covenant, we are always offering to God our very bodies as acceptable sacrifices (Romans 12:1-2). Worship is a 24/7 duty and delight. This means that, by the exercise of great discipline, we must always remember that “the Lord of Hosts” is our King, Savior, Lover, Protector, and the only One worthy of our deepest affection and loyalty. All of life is worship for those who have been transformed by His redeeming grace!

Then, it is when we are living in the radiant light of “the King of glory” that all secondary matters and daily distractions seem to fade away, or at least find their proper place. We must allow the radiance of His attributes and effulgence of His holiness to blast away all of the pesky distractions that befall us each day, and which tempt us to forget that we serve and belong to an awesome God! The bigger and brighter our LORD is, the more insignificant the cares and worries of this life become.

Finally, as we work very hard at remembering the God we serve and love, there is a deeper rest that we come to experience. It seems odd to say it this way; that work results in rest. But it is true nonetheless! In this psalm, David gives us some identifying qualities of the God we are to work hard to remember.

He is Owner and Establisher of all creation (vv. 1-2).

He is the God of our eternal salvation (v. 5).

He is the invincible Warrior and Defender of His people (v.8).

Creator, Savior, Defender. What else do we need? Who else could we ever need? If He is all of this and more, then we need not be intimidated by the hollow boasts of the evil one or his minions. We need not be overly concerned about the threats and taunts of wicked men and their kingdoms, which are destined for judgment and destruction. We need not worry at all even about what we shall eat, drink, or wear (Matthew 6:25). For our great LORD and King has placed His infinite love upon us, and will richly provide all that we need! Today, like every day, will be a “Sabbath rest” for all who are in Christ Jesus (Hebrews 4:9).

So, as you begin this new week, allow me to encourage you not to forget what you’re doing. Every moment you will live, every breath you will take, every decision you will make, and even each thought that you will think will be engaged in as a worshipper and child of “the King of glory,” the “LORD of hosts”! Don’t dare forget the One who will never forget you!

You are my joy, my delight, and I love you all with all my heart!

    Sermon Preview:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In Matthew 18, we find a tender scene unfolding before us as Jesus interacts with a little child (18:1-4). This Lord’s Day we will take our second look at this encounter as we continue to reflect upon the theme of the sanctify of human life.

Ironically, it is within this beautiful episode that Jesus uses some of the most frightening language we have record of in the Gospels. We find these hard words of our Lord in verse 6. The shocking language of our Savior is designed to reveal just how much the little children matter to Him. It is from this passage that we will again encounter the fact that even the smallest human life is precious in His Kingdom.

Let me encourage you to reflect upon Matthew 18:1-14 as we prepare to come joyfully before our King in worship on Sunday.

A Special Invitation for the Men of CPC

Next Friday, February 4th, we will resume our Friday Lunchtime Men’s Bible Study. We will meet at the Church in the fellowship room from 11:30 AM ‘till 12:30 PM. All the men of CPC and guests are invited to attend (and please feel free to bring your own lunch!).

Our topic will be ‘Knowing Christ,’ based upon the book by Dr. Mark Jones, Knowing Christ (Banner of Truth Publishing, 2015). In this very helpful book, Dr. Jones introduces us to a number of qualities, characteristics, and truths about our Savior, including: His dignity, incarnation, divinity, humanity, emotions, prayers, miracles, sinlessness, and more!

I look forward to some wonderful fellowship and study with our men!

May our Lord bless you all with His peace, and I love you very much,

    Mike

Day to day pours out speech, and night reveals knowledge”–

    (Psalm 19:2)

My Dear Ones in Christ our Lord,

I would venture a guess that there are many of us who encounter seasons of life when we are tempted to believe that God is silent. This is, at least in my experience, usually associated with affliction or difficulties that flow into our lives from our Father’s hand. Of course, king David himself walked this very pathway long ago (see Psalm 109:1-4 for just one example). And if we follow David’s lead, it is not a sin or an expression of unbelief to cry out to our Father in personal admission of this sense of His apparent silence. Frankly, I would suspect that this reality will not change much until we see our Savior face-to-face. We will need the Spirit’s sustaining grace and power as we faithfully await the arrival of that great Day.

But let’s return to this subject of our Father’s apparent silence.

I say ‘apparent’ silence simply because that’s what it is. In this wonderful nineteenth Psalm, David shows us that, in reality, our Father is never, ever silent! He is always, day and night, speaking to us! And if this is true, then what we need is a little adjustment in our ‘listening.’

In Psalm19:1-6, the king of Israel declares that the stars at night and the sun in the day are ‘voices’ shouting out to us, unceasingly declaring our Father’s majestic “glory” (v. 1). Paradoxically, while unable to actually speak, the language of the heavens and the sun “goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world” (v. 4). This means that, for those who are ‘listening,’ the Father shouts to us as the sun moves above the horizon in the morning, sending us on our way each day in His service! And He sings us to sleep at night as the starry hosts appear with the deepening darkness! The theme of both the daytime sun and the evening stars is His awesome “glory”! “Day to day” this heavenly “speech” is poured out upon us like Niagara Falls!

The celestial message of our Father’s “glory” should not be discounted for its seeming simplicity and brevity. That one little word encompasses all that our Father is in His infinity, omnipotence, wisdom, uniqueness, splendor, love, holiness, and more! The Awesome One is never quiet!

But, this is not all there is to His speaking!

In verses 7-10, David explains that our gracious Lord and Father has also delivered to us His written Word. This same Word is referred to by the king as “law,” “testimony,” “precepts,” “commandments,” “fear,” and “rules.” These synonymous terms reveal the sufficiency and power of the Lord’s own voice, which has been recorded in the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments.

When we open and read His Word, we ‘hear’ our Father speak. And as we do this, the Spirit of God illuminates our minds, teaches us our Father’s truth, and applies it to our individual lives. Once again, He is never silent! Morning, noon, and night, and every second in between, the One who made us and loves us is speaking to us!

Our task on this new Monday is simply to listen! As I write this, the sun is on its way over the horizon. It is traveling the pathway through the heavens that our Father has established (vv. 4-5). Its message is “Glory!”, the “glory” of our majestic and sovereign God! In eleven hours or so, the stars will appear as night falls. And their song will be the same! And as you open your Bibles at some point along the way in these next several hours, your Father will speak yet again. And as we listen to the heavens, and as we read the inscripturated Word, let us respond in prayer:

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer”!

I love you so very much,

    Mike

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This coming Lord’s Day is Sanctity of Human Life Sunday. Each year, along with thousands of other churches, we take time to reflect upon the Biblical truth of our creation in the image and likeness of God. This year we will be examining two passages from the Gospel of Matthew that record two separate encounters that our Lord had with little children: Matthew 18:1-9, and Matthew 19:13-15.

Because these texts are so very significant, I will take the next two Sunday’s to preach from them. Let me encourage you to study these passages as we prepare for worship.

Also, it will be our joy this week in worship to receive a missions report from our own Stefanie Miles, Director of the Huntsville Pregnancy Resource Center. Stefanie will tell us about the work of the Center, how we may pray specifically for them, and how you can be directly involved in this vital ministry.

May our Father bless you with a restful weekend, and I love you all so much!

You have set Your glory above the heavens”–Psalm 8:1

My Dear Ones in Christ Jesus,

One brilliantly starry night in ancient Jerusalem, David, the greatest king of Israel, looked up and became overwhelmed with the reality of his own insignificance.   We know this happened because he tells us this very thing in Psalm 8:

When I look at Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have set in place, what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You care for him?” (vv. 3-4).

I suspect that we have all experienced something like this, maybe on a number of occasions.  Into everyone’s life comes those moments when we get a fleeting (and quite disturbing!) glimpse of how microscopically small we actually are in comparison to the vastness of outer space.  The same thing might happen to us as we stand on the shore overlooking the ocean, or perhaps atop a high mountain as we gaze down far below.  Such experiences trigger many thoughts in our minds, not the least being how little our lives must matter.

When I was a young boy, my Dad would often take me to Birmingham’s Legion Field to see our beloved crimson elephants play football.  I remember how I would look out over the seventy-thousand souls filling the stands and wonder how my God and Father could possibly have any concern about me at all. And then, my mind would travel a little further away to the great city of Birmingham itself, with its many tall buildings (they seemed huge back then!), steel factories, and large neighborhoods. How could my life matter at all? How could I not get lost in such a massive crowd?  How could God hear my prayers, or even be the least bit bothered with the details of my life? These were the biggest questions challenging my faith in Christ.

Since those days long ago, the world’s population has more than doubled (from 3.5 billion in 1968 to 7.8 billion today)! Glancing up at the stars seems to illustrate the vast number of human beings alive at any given moment.  How could God be “mindful” of me and even “care” for me?  So many people!  So many events taking place each second!  How could we matter at all?

If this has been your experience, then take heart. David himself was well-acquainted with this rather sick feeling prompted by the realization of his personal finitude.

However, the medicine our hearts really need at such moments is not the ‘snake oil’ of a more robust self-esteem or self-confidence. Rather, it is a much bigger vision of the Maker of the stars Himself that will cure our souls!

David puts it this way in the opening words of the Psalm:

O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!

The Lord’s “name” represents the fullness of His Being.  The word “majestic” sets forth the limitless bounds of His glory, power, and wisdom!  These simple words, human tools for communication, are stretched even beyond their limits by the Being they are attempting to describe! That is to say, that even the most exalted human speech cannot sufficiently set forth the greatness of our God and Father!  “Majestic” will have to suffice for now!

As David would finally conclude, it is because our God is “majestic” that He is “mindful” of you and me, and that He “cares” for each of us!  His loving-mindfulness of each and every one of us is “majestic”!  His loving-care for each and every one of us is also “majestic”!  Hallelujah!

If you would permit me to do a little theological speculating, here’s how I would apply this to us today, on this new Monday:

Because our God and Father is “majestic,”

He contemplates and cares for you as if you were the only human being alive.

He loves each of us as if He had only one sinner to love and redeem.

He guides and protects each of us as if He had only one frail little human being to watch over.

He hears our individual prayers as if ours is the only voice crying out to Him in the whole universe.

Because He is “majestic,” every redeemed sinner can say, “My Father in heaven loves me!”

Again, we want to know how this could be true.  After all, there are multiplied millions of Christians in the world this very moment, calling to Him in prayer, in need, in danger, and fully dependent upon Him for everything.

The answer again is enclosed in this word “majestic.”  It is no coincidence that this word frames both sides of this wonderful Psalm (v. 1 and v. 9).  Perhaps this is the one word that should frame the time between our rising in the morning and our lying down at night!  Our God and Father is awesome in majesty!  He is majestically omnipresent, majestically omnipotent, majestically omniscient, and majestically omni-benevolent!  And in that majestic awesomeness we find our consolation for today and every day!

Beloved ones, He does care for you!  He does know your name!  He does hear your prayers!  And He has you in His great “majestic” hands, and He will never let you go!

I love you all with all my heart,

    Mike

PS: Next up is Psalm 19 for Monday January 24.

    Sermon Preview:

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

Over the last couple of Sundays, we’ve discovered that there are some surprising ways that we develop a deeper and more intimate knowledge of our Savior. In Philippians 3:10-11 the Apostle Paul sets out three pathways whereby believers enter into a deeper understanding and personal knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Last week we examined the first of these ways. And you will recall that it is through our daily experience of the awesome “power” of our Lord’s “resurrection.” This Lord’s Day, we will consider the other two ways: through our fellowship with His “sufferings,” and by means of our conformity to His “death.”

As we prepare our hearts for this message from God’s Word, let us keep in mind that the goal of life is not that we might know more about Christ, or know more about the truths of the Gospel–as essential as these are–but that we would know Him more!

    Family Forum:

We wanted to give you an opportunity to sign up for our upcoming Family Forum ministry event at Christ Presbyterian Church, Friday, February 18th!

Our family forum is an opportunity for our church members to consider various topics on Christian discipleship, family, marriage, and parenting. Our sessions for this forum will orbit around the topic of parenting and sexuality. We will consider Biblical wisdom and guidance for parenting in an age of sexual chaos, promote awareness of helpful literature and resources for talking to your children and teens about sex and sexuality, and devote some time to discussion and Q/A.

While the forum will be directly helpful to parents, the event will be informative and useful to any who have a present or future interest in the discipleship of children. Please consider this opportunity as you consider your role as a parent, grandparent, or your general commitment to the nurture of covenant children in our fellowship!

The event begins at 5:30pm with an optional fellowship dinner preceding the sessions. If you choose to forgo the dinner, the forum will begin at 6:15. The cost of the forum is free. For the dinner, a $10 (per person) donation is encouraged to help us offset the cost of food.

If you are interested in attending, please let us know by clicking here!

For additional questions, please contact Matthew Elliott at matthew@christpreshamptoncove.org.

    Children’s Ministry:

I hope you all had a wonderful advent season and are filled with hope and encouragement as we get ready to face a new year. I have created a new nursery volunteer sign up for the first quarter of 2022.

We invite any lady aged 13-113 who is a member of Christ Pres to volunteer to help our nursery staff during worship service on Sundays. We have been operating with one nursery and have had anywhere from 2-8 children in our nursery. Due to potential large numbers, we are adding an additional volunteer slot. With fewer than 6 children, one volunteer will be dismissed to worship.

Please follow the link below to sign up. On the day(s) you are signed up, you will report to the nursery at 10:15 to help greet our littles as they arrive. Amanda or Ashley will be there to get you started and Mrs. Irene, our nursery worker, will be there the duration of the service.

  • Monday Encouragement

    Encouragement from the Psalms

    Book One: Psalm 1

but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night” (1:2)

    Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It isn’t any wonder at all that we discover these words in the very first of the 150 Psalms. After all, this is a book of worship for those who are members of the covenant. But don’t be fooled by the designation ‘worship book’ for this inspired collection of corporate songs and prayers that are designed to be employed in formal worship. It is also a book of directions. That is, it contains precepts, commands, exhortations, and divine guidance for living as a worshipper of the one true God and Lord. To put this in twenty-first century terms, it is not just a book for Sundays. It is also for Monday through Saturday!

Certainly, “the law of the Lord” is to govern the corporate worship of the Church each Lord’s Day. “Law” here should be understood as a reference to all of Scripture, not just to the Old Testament Law. God’s inscripturated Word shows us how our Heavenly Father desires to be worshipped and adored by those whom He has saved by the righteousness and blood of His Son. But as we read in the second verse of the Psalm, the believer’s meditation upon God’s Word is to take place “day and night.” This is a way of saying that for us who know the Savior, worship never stops!

Have you ever considered meditation upon the Scriptures as an essential act of worship? I would bet that most of us would assume that worship is primarily composed of praying, singing, hearing the Word, and observing the Sacraments. And to be sure, these are necessary elements of our worship. But here in Psalm 1, the unnamed author shows us that the daily (and nightly!) act of deeply pondering the riches of the Holy Word is essential to the kind of worship that pleases our Holy God, both in its corporate and personal expressions.

Additionally, we see that the act of giving our minds to the discipline of studied reflection upon our Father’s Word is set in contrast to being influenced by the “counsel of the wicked” (v. 1). This clearly implies that “whatever shapes a man’s thinking shapes his life” (Derek Kidner, Psalms 1-72).

We might think of our minds as lumps of wax. Each day, forces all around us are persistently shaping our minds in a multitude of ways, many unperceived. That which goes into our minds inevitably has an effect upon the condition of our souls. And it is also true that many of these powerful, soul-shaping forces are actually invited into our minds as we voluntarily expose ourselves to them throughout the day. The “counsel of the wicked” is ubiquitous in our technologically-driven world.

And while the psalmist penned these words many centuries ago, their practical relevance to our current times is uncanny. Never before in the history of humanity have we been exposed to so many streams of information and “counsel,” and so much of it evil. If there was ever a time for the covenant people to give themselves most diligently to the act of meditation upon our Father’s Word, it is now.

Later on in our Monday studies we will examine Psalm 19. There we will read that God’s Law “is perfect, reviving the soul” (19:7). But in this initial Psalm we first encounter the fact that meditation upon the Word produces profoundly beneficial effects in our lives, a ‘revival,’ if you will.

We are filled with joy and happiness–“Blessed is the man” (v. 1).

    We discover strength and stability–“like a tree” (v. 3).

We become spiritually prosperous–“that yields its fruit” (v. 3).

And we are enabled to enjoy more and more of God’s gracious favor–“the Lord knows the way of the righteous” (v. 6).

Finally, it is apparent that there is a choice that we must make, perhaps daily, perhaps even hour-by-hour. The “law of the Lord” and the “counsel of the wicked” are in perpetual opposition. It’s one or the other. Each of us must make a deliberate choice to find our soul’s true “delight” in God’s Word.

What that will look like in practical terms for each of us will involve different changes and alterations in our lives. It will not be easy to distance ourselves from the voices of the “scoffers” (v. 1). But it is essential that we do so if we are to enjoy the incomprehensibly rich benefits of having our minds controlled and shaped by the very breath of our Holy God.

My prayer for all of us today is that we will learn the necessity and incalculable value of meditating upon our Father’s Word. May His Word dwell richly within us! And may our hearts find their true joy and happiness as we do!

I love you all with all my heart,

    Mike

    Sermon Preview:

    Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In the Gospel of John our Lord confronts the Disciple named Philip with a most convicting question: “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip?” (John 14:9). I think of that interaction between the Lord and His Disciple as I ponder the words of Paul in Philippians 3:10.

As we discovered last Sunday in our message, it is here that the Apostle expresses his greatest aim in all of life: “that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death.” We have suggested that this should be our preeminent ‘resolution’ for the New Year, and for each day of our lives.

Obviously, it is one thing to “know” our Lord in terms of becoming a Christian, and in this sense we all “know” Him. But these passages from John and Philippians also imply that there is much more to “know” about Him even after we have been redeemed!

In Philippians 3:10, Paul lays out three ways, or three mechanisms, for gaining a deeper knowledge of the Savior. The first one has to do with the resurrection power of God. The second involves suffering. And the third includes death.

At first glance, these appear quite mysterious to us. But as we probe them more closely, Paul’s message will become very clear, as will that which should be our greatest goal.

This Sunday we will examine what it means to “know” Christ more deeply through the experience of His power, the very energy that raised Him from the dead. Then on January 16, the Lord willing, we will consider the other two ways of knowing Him more.

    Sunday School Resumes This Week!

Don’t forget that our Winter/Spring Sunday School term begins at 9:30 AM on Sunday. As always, there are classes for all ages. Our Adults will be studying the topic of The Attributes of God. I hope to see you all then and there!

I love you all so much!

  • Monday Encouragement

My Beloved Brothers and Sisters in our Lord Jesus Christ,

A good number of years ago now, I was attending a conference led by a noted Reformed theologian on the topic of spiritual disciplines. He suggested that as a part of a believer’s daily routine, one should read and meditate upon “a Psalm a day.” He explained that along with whatever other portions of Scripture one might read each day in their time of devotion, there should be included at least one chapter from Psalms.

Since that day I have endeavored to heed this excellent advice. Along the way the Lord has been so kind and faithful to bless His Word, and to show me more of the beauty, depth, and life-changing power of Israel’s inspired ‘worship book.’

This brings me to a modest challenge I’d like to set out before you as we begin another year together in the service of our Great King and Redeemer.

As you might already know, the 150 Psalms are divided into Five Books. This division was established centuries ago by the ancient Jews. Most modern translations of the Bible indicate the boundaries of the Five Books of the Psalms, either in the text itself or in the marginal notes.

Set forth together, they look like this:

    Book One–Psalms 1-41

    Book Two–Psalms 42-72

    Book Three–Psalms 73-89

    Book Four–Psalms 90-106

    Book Five–Psalms 107-150

If you have a Study Bible (such as the ESV Study Bible) you will find an explanation of this structure, and how and why it came to be.

My challenge for us is to walk together through small portions of these Five Books over the next twenty Mondays (from January 10-May 23). This will take us all the way up to our summer break.

Each month we will consider four chapters from the five sections. Some will be very recognizable as we go along. Others might be less familiar and understood.

I would propose that we follow the schedule below:

    January:

    Ps.1, 1/10

    Ps. 8, 1/17

    Ps. 19, 1/24

    Ps. 24, 1/31

    February:

    Ps. 42, 2/7

    Ps. 51, 2/14

    Ps. 69, 2/21

    Ps. 71, 2/28

    March:

    Ps. 73, 3/7

    Ps. 84, 3/14

    Ps. 86, 3/21

    Ps. 89, 3/28

    April:

    Ps. 90, 4/4

    Ps. 95, 4/11

    Ps. 96, 4/18

    Ps. 100, 4/25

    May:

    Ps. 111, 5/2

    Ps. 115, 5/9

    Ps. 121, 5/16

    Ps. 130, 5/23

To get things started, this means that from today until next Monday you will read and meditate upon Psalm 1. And then, on January 10 my Monday note of encouragement will be a reflection upon some aspect or emphasis found in that chapter. Then for the remainder of the plan we will follow this pattern.

As you can see, we will go deep and not so wide. Rather than ‘a Psalm a day,’ it will be ‘a Psalm per week.’ And even though we are deliberately taking a slower pace, I believe we will all gain a better understanding of this amazing book of worship. And, more than that, we will be renewed and encouraged in our faith as we encounter our Living Lord on these pages of Holy Scripture!

So, for all who would join me on this journey, your assignment for this week is Psalm 1. Read it, over and again. Meditate upon it. Memorize it. Study it. Pray over it. And then, next Monday I’ll share a few thoughts about Psalm 1 that I hope will lift your hearts, fill you with hope and joy, and encourage you in your walk with our beloved Savior.

I love you all so very much! You are my joy and delight! And I pray for each of you, always!

    In His grace,

    Mike
