You rule the raging of the sea; when its waves rise, you still them”–Psalm 89:9

My Dear Ones in the Lord Jesus Christ,

The eighty-ninth Psalm is a magnificent song of praise the Sovereign God who made an everlasting covenant with David (see vv. 3-4). While extolling the unfailing nature of this covenant promise, the author (Ethan, the Ezrahite) also reveals the nature of the God who is able to make such an eternally valid and enduring promise. This is made especially evident in verses 5-9 where Ethan beautifully employs the loftiest of human language to set forth the power and awesomeness of the Lord.

Of course, we know that this Old Covenant promise was ultimately fulfilled in the One who came from heaven as God-Incarnate, and who now rules over a Kingdom of infinitely greater grandeur and glory (see vv. 24-29 where this is stated prophetically).

In verse 9, however, we read of the ability of our God to exercise His sovereign will over the “raging the of sea” and the surging if its “waves.” While this might not register with us to the same degree it did the Old Testament saints, we should remember that in their minds the “sea” was a dimension of created reality that was ruled by evil. There were dark and mysterious forces at work in the world’s great oceans and other bodies of water. Sea monsters lurked there, such as “Leviathan” (Job 41:1; Psalm 104:26). The malevolent powers of chaos were to be found there as well, along with untold dangers awaiting all who ventured upon the waters.

Yet, with all its power and shadowy hazards, the domain of the “sea” was and is fully under the reign of the One who is “awesome above all” (v. 8). The Awesome One rules the seas and makes the tempestuous waves fall flat! There is no power in heaven, on earth, or even in the world’s great waters that may stand against Him! All who are under His Lordship, and who place their trust in Him, are safe and at peace!

But there is even more to consider as we reflect upon these words from Psalm 89! And this is where our encouragement for this new Monday is to be found.

The Gospel of Matthew records a very familiar incident involving Jesus, the Disciples, and the Sea of Galilee. While traveling across the lake in a small boat, Jesus and the Disciples were engulfed in a great storm that suddenly arose with such ferocity that the Twelve were terrified (even those among them who were seasoned fishermen by trade!). Then, as Matthew 8:25-27 says, the frightened men . . .

went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”

At that moment, with the little vessel now floating peacefully upon the once surging waves, the Disciples made the connection between their Master and the Sovereign One praised in Psalm 89. This “man” named Jesus was the great “I Am”! He was and is the One who is King of the seas, and the awesome Lord of all creation! He need only speak His effectual Word and all of the powers of darkness bow in submission!

The picture painted by this episode is an accurate depiction of our everyday life as servants of Jesus. The life of the Church is like a trip with our Lord across the seas. In this world there are dangers galore, and mysteriously evil forces at work that would otherwise frighten us out of our wits! Our little boat, our Church, to which we are all committed by sacred vows to Jesus and to one another, is oftentimes bouncing in the waves, under the constant threat of destruction, and in need of persistent protection.

But Jesus is with us! The King of All sails with us! He is the Commander of the waves, the Sovereign Lord of all monsters and storms! And all who belong to Him and His beloved flock are always safe, no matter what their emotions might tell them! He will not lose even one for whom He died and rose again! His will for each of His precious sheep will be fulfilled, despite all opposition against Him and His Eternal Kingdom of righteousness and peace! And He is, for His own glory and our good, still rebuking “the winds and the sea” (v. 26). demonstrating to us again and again the infinite superiority of His power and grace!

Whatever storms or waves might come our way today or this week, let us all rest assured that He still rules “the raging of the sea”! And “when its waves rise,” He shall “still them” yet again!

You are my joy and my crown! I love you all with all my heart!

    Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As you remember, last Sunday we began looking at the eight beautiful characteristics of the eternal “Mount Zion” as set forth in Hebrews 12:22-24. We identified four of the eight:

First, it is the “city of the living God” (v. 22).

Second, it is also known as “the heavenly Jerusalem” (v. 22).

Third, it is the place where there are “innumerable angels in festal garments” (v. 23).

Fourth, it is also “the assembly of the first born” (v. 23).

This Lord’s Day, we will consider the remaining four features of our eternal home with Christ, “Mount Zion”:

It is where we are “enrolled” as citizens (v. 23).

It is where “the Judge” resides (v. 23).

It is where the “righteous” are (v. 23).

It is where “Jesus” is (v. 24).

There is no doubt that as we more fully realize what awaits us, what God has promise us, we will be powerfully encouraged and uplifted as we serve Him!

I can’t wait to explore this passage from God’s Word with you!

    In His grace,

    Mike

Unite my heart to fear Your name”–Psalm 86:11

My Beloved Ones in Christ our Lord,

Have you ever had the feeling that your life and mind were hopelessly fragmented? So many moving parts in life. So many perplexities to deal with, temptations to overcome, challenges to meet, and the unexpected difficulties that greet us often.

Some people experience this as a sense of the loss of control or direction. They might even express this unpleasant sensation by saying something like, ‘I feel like my life is spiraling out of control.’ My guess is that such a thing is common to all of us. There are plenty of days, perhaps even protracted seasons in our lives, when we feel like we are being sliced into many pieces, pulled here and there, thoughts scattered about, way too many concerns to deal with at one time, and simply overwhelmed.

If this should describe you, then let me first encourage you by pointing out that Israel’s greatest king, David, walked down this same road, even as the man who followed the Lord “with all his heart” (1 Kings 14:8). With blunt and often embarrassing detail the Old Testament chronicles the many sorrows, failures, attacks, and tribulations he faced, a good many of which he brought upon himself. And especially from the Psalms, we also learn that David spared no words or emotions in crying out to the Lord about all of it. Frankly, there are times when David sounds like a man who is. . . well . . . terribly disturbed, if not crazy!

But here in Psalm 86, which is categorized as a psalm of lament, David asks the Lord for something rather unusual at first glance; a “heart” that is unified (v. 11).

What he means by this is that in the midst of all of the craziness that was going on in his personal life and in his kingdom, his soul felt fractured, broken like so many shards of glass laying on the road. So, in understandable desperation, he turns to the One he calls “my God” (v. 2) and prays that he might be granted a soul that is put back together again, rather than fragmented, painfully divided, and characterized by a plethora of thoughts and emotions dragging him in all directions at once.

Yet, take care to notice what it is that David believes will bring such a healing unity to his broken heart; it is “to fear Your name.”

Perhaps this sounds odd, that at such a time of profound distress the great king would loft such a passionate supplication for “fear.” Why not ask for peace, for joy, for relief, for comfort, or for any number of other blessings that might bring unity to his disintegrated soul?

Maybe we can better understand David’s spiritual logic if we ponder the nature of this “fear” he is seeking. What is it to “fear” the “name” of the Lord? And how does this “fear” serve as both a unifying and healing force in our hearts?

While the full answer to this question would take us well beyond the scope of this little devotional (and my abilities!), we might consider just a couple of ideas.

First, our Lord’s “name” represents who He is in all of His power, glory, majesty, holiness, wisdom, love, and grace! You can see some of these attributes mentioned here in Psalm 86. For example, look at verse 5 where David reflects upon the Lord’s goodness, forgiveness, and steadfast love. The same may be said of verse 15 as well. In this sense, to “fear” the Lord’s “name” is to recognize and trust who His is, especially in His mercy and grace towards all who belong to Him. That is to say, what gives us a “united heart” and restores our spiritual well-being is our trust in who our God really is! The unifying power of our souls is nothing less than the very One we, like David, may also call “my God.”

To “fear” Him in this way is to place our childlike faith in Him, totally. The opposite of this is to trust in other things, or to look for other ‘unifying themes’ in life. Some might be tempted to trust their own abilities to sort life out, or their wisdom, or strength, or whatever it may be. Yet, David gets his heart ready to revere God by first confessing that he is, despite all illusions of his personal power and wisdom, simply one who is “poor and needy” (v. 1). It’s frankly impossible to “fear” the “name” of our God while basking in the myth of our own ‘attributes’ of glory and strength. To do so will leave one in broken pieces, full of anxiety and even wretched despair.

Then secondly, to “fear” the Lord’s Holy “name” is to seek only one thing in the ultimate sense. When we find ourselves overly desirous of earthly treasures and benefits, whatever they might be and however good and noble they may seem, the result is the fragmentation of our hearts. You see, our Creator never designed us to live this way. This is why, for example, that Jesus warned us about the impossibility of serving God and earthly wealth (Matthew 6:24). There can be but one ultimate desire. All others, by definition, must be secondary at best. For believers in our Savior, that supreme desire is nothing less than our Lord and His glory! David says as much in verse 12: “I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify your name forever.”

For fractured souls and troubled minds there is only one solution. There is only one unifying power. It is that we might more fully love and trust the Mighty One who has saved us! No other basis for wholeness and spiritual health exists. Fractured, divided, and broken souls can only be healed by a good dose of the “fear” His great “name”!

As we begin this new week, let us join king David in asking our gracious Father in Heaven to bless us, not with worldly treasures or advantages, but with the beautiful, soul-enriching desire for Him alone!

I love you all with an ever-increasing love, and I am so thankful for you!

    Mike

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

As we learned last Sunday from Hebrews 12:18-22, mountains figure very significantly in the Scripture’s unfolding plan of redemption. In these verses, the author contrast two of those important mountains, Sinai, and Zion.

Mount Sinai was only physical, was associated with the Old Covenant, was a place of dread and fear for the covenant people (and even for Moses!), and became the pattern for Solomon’s temple in Jerusalem.

On the other hand, Mount Zion is not a mountain in the way that Sinai was. This mountain is also a city and a temple! In verse 22 it is depicted as “the city of the living God,” and as “the heavenly Jerusalem.”

What could these special designations for Mount Zion mean? And how could understanding them help us now as we serve our Lord ‘on the battlefield’?

This Lord’s Day we will probe more fully the wonder and glory of Mount Zion, which is also “the heavenly Jerusalem” and our eternal home! Our sermon text will be Hebrews 12:22-23, and I can’t wait to explore these inspired words with you!

I love you all with all of my heart,

    Mike

  • Monday Encouragement

Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself . . . at your altars, O Lord of Hosts, my King and my God”– Psalm 84:3

My Dear Ones in Our Lord Jesus Christ,

We’ve got two large trees in our front yard. I often enjoy looking out the window in my study and observing the many little birds that appear there. It seems to me that they are always very busy. They are persistently gathering twigs with which to build their nests, or foraging for worms and insects to eat or feed to their young.

Once I observed one of the little birds flying up to the top of the taller of the two trees, up and down over and again for several minutes, each time lofting more sticks as it made its home high above the ground. It seemed rather exhausting to me, all of that flying around, carrying up twig after twig until the nest was just right.

Sometimes the daily life of such busy little birds seems to be an accurate picture of our lives as well, even as followers of Jesus. We are ever busy building our nests, repairing them after storms, looking for food, tending to our young, while simultaneously avoiding the many predators that lurk nearby, ready to make us the main dish on their table. A bird’s life is not so trouble free after all, and neither is ours!

This is one of the reasons Psalm 84 is so intriguing. Authored by the sons of Korah, it extolls the supreme security, beauty, and satisfaction that is to be found in the Lord’s “dwelling place” (v. 1). Perhaps this Psalm is best known for verse 10 where the author testifies to his experience of the inconceivable blessings of God’s presence: “a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere.”

But what brings us encouragement on this new Monday are the words discovered in verse 3. Here the author compares himself (and all of the Lord’s covenant people) to a little female “sparrow” or “swallow.” And he tells us that in the presence of the Lord, in His “courts” (v. 2), and at the Lord’s “altars” (v. 3), she finds a “home” and a “nestalready made for her and “her young”! She needs only to come to the place where the Lord dwells, and there she will discover shelter, provisions, protection, and rest provided both freely and abundantly by the King, Creator, and Redeemer Himself!

There is a great lesson here for contemporary Christians like you and me.

On this side of our Lord’s triumphant return, our lives are filled with many cares and concerns, all of which seem to be greatly amplified by the rapidly changing and acutely frightening events now taking place in our world. We might feel like little, insignificant birds, frantically hopping around in all directions, scattered here and there by the multitude of threats that greet us each new day, and by the ever-present need to provide for our own well-being and that of those whom we love. It’s exhausting, to be honest.

Yet, there is a place of rest and peace, even for little birds like you and me! It is at the “altars” of our great Lord and King!

Compressed into this word “altars” (v. 3) is every blessing that we have in Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior, both those we possess now in part and those we will experience in the future in all of their glorious fullness! The word anticipates the death and resurrection of the Perfect Son of God, whose blood washes away our guilt, whose righteousness gives us a place at the King’s table as natural sons and daughters of God, and whose triumph over death secures our eternal life with Him!

It is in His Kingdom, in His presence, that we have our eternal home!

This fact leads us to “sing for joy” (vv. 2,4), to find our “strength” in Him (v. 5), always moving “from strength to strength” (v. 7) knowing that the Lord “bestows favor and honor” upon us (v. 11), and never withholds any “good thing” from us as we “walk uprightly,” always trusting His faithfulness even in the driest of valleys, “Baca” (vv. 6, 11).

Until our Savior comes for us, we will continue to build and repair our earthly nests, forage for our food, seek to care and provide for our young, and be on the alert for danger. But we engage in these necessary tasks with the knowledge that we have “a home” already made for us, one that is eternal and impervious! And this fact, this blessed reality, allows us to rest now, even in our busyness and amidst all of the difficulties and perils of this life, and to sing songs of deliverance and praise! After all, as Jesus our Savior said:

Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” (Matthew 6:26).

Let’s trust the Words of Jesus together!

I love you all so much!

    Mike

    Sermon Preview:

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

This coming Lord’s Day, our sermon will come from Hebrews 12:18-24. Verse 18 of this passage begins a paragraph that draws a sharp contrast between two mountains.

The first one mentioned was the central mountain of the Old Covenant, Mt. Sinai (vv. 18-21). The Second one is the central mountain of the New Covenant, Mt. Zion (vv. 22-24).

In order to remain faithful to Christ and His Kingdom, the author of this Epistle summons his readers to look carefully at the distinctive features of each mountain. While they share some very important characteristics, there are critical differences that all believers must see and appreciate.

In our message, we will first explore the fascinating place of mountains in the plan of salvation. Then, we will take a very close look at Mt. Sinai.

As we examine these two mountains over the next couple of week, let’s remember what the purpose for this comparison really is: that we might love, serve, adore, treasure, and serve faithfully the One who is “the mediator of a new covenant” (v. 24).

Don’t forget to move your clocks forward one hour on Saturday night!

    And . . .

Be sure to plan on staying for our Second Sunday Lunch immediately after worship!

  • Monday Encouragement

    until I went into the sanctuary of God . . . .”
    Psalm 73:17
My Beloved Ones in Christ Jesus,
They say that ‘What you see is what you get.’  You’ve heard it more times than you can count.  But I would like to suggest that this little, wildly popular maxim is terribly insufficient for those who know our Savior and Lord.  The fact is, what you ‘see’ isn’t always what’s actually there before you.
I once heard about a man who lived in a third floor apartment in the heart of a big city. One beautiful spring day, he opened his widow overlooking the street below, spied a young couple sitting at a table on the sidewalk, drawn in very close together, and deeply involved in an intimate conversation.  As he looked down upon the two love-birds, he admired such a public display of obvious affection.  He thought to himself, ‘Oh, to be young again, madly in love, and unashamed!’
A bit later, he made his way down to the lobby as he headed off to run errands, exited his building, and began to walk toward the couple.  As he passed by he overheard their conversation.  They were discussing the terms of their divorce!  And the table and the chairs they were sitting in had come from their apartment, along with other items of furniture. All that they once shared was stationed there on the sidewalk awaiting the arrival of two moving vans that would take away their respective belongings!   What you ‘see’ isn’t always what’s actually there!
In Psalm 73, this very thing happened to Asaph, the author of these inspired words.  Long ago he looked around at his world and then contemplated the fate of his people Israel. What he ‘saw’ was a world that hated the Covenant people.  And the enemies of Israel, and of Israel’s God, looked as if they were prospering in every way, living happily, enjoying the rich bounty of earthly treasures, and seemingly getting away with their evil behavior without any consequences whatsoever (73:2-9). Understandably, what Asaph ‘saw’ deeply disturbed him (73:2, 13-14, 16).
I suspect that you can appreciate the pains that Asaph endured at that moment.  I would even go further and suggest that we share his consternation this very morning!  We all wonder secretly, if not aloud, ‘Is the Lord really in charge?  Will He vindicate us? Have we believed and suffered for nothing? Is the Lord even aware of our struggles and adversities?’
Well, in Asaph’s case there is much more to his story than simply his sense of being abandoned and the bitterness that this birthed in his heart (73:21).  He would soon learn that what he ‘saw’ when he looked around at his world was not really the truth!  The change in his soul that he documents in this Psalm is remarkable, to say the least!   The second half of the Psalm is nothing less than a triumphant confession of faith in the God of Israel (73:25-28).
So what happened to Asaph? How did his outlook change so radically?  How did he go from terrible despair to bold praise?
In 73:17 we find the answer.
He made a trip!  He arose from his place of despair, pain, and troubling questions about the Lord, and came to the place of worship, corporate worship, the “sanctuary of God.”  There in that sacred space, he and his Brother-Israelites encountered the God who lives and reigns over all.  He listened as the Word of the Lord was read aloud and explained, he joined in the songs of corporate praise, he shared in the congregational prayers and the confessions of faith, and he reaffirmed his personal commitment in His Redeemer.  And when he did this, he saw the real truth about the world and about himself and his people!  His eyes were then opened.  His soul was renewed.  His perspective on life, and upon the events of his world, was completely transformed!  He then “discerned” something that he had missed (73:17), namely the truth about his enemies:
then I discerned their end. Truly you set them in slippery places; you make them fall to ruin. 19 How they are destroyed in a moment, swept away utterly by terrors! 20 Like a dream when one awakes, O Lord, when you rouse yourself, you despise them as phantoms.”
No doubt about it!  When we ‘look’ out to the world around us, despair might surely overwhelm us.   Perhaps this morning you are ‘looking’ at your life and personal circumstances, and what you ‘see’ is painful, frightening, and even debilitating.  But may I suggest that what we initially assume to be the truth might well be an illusion.  And the way to see through our situation is to come together “into the sanctuary of God.”
When we worship together on the Lord’s Day, one of the amazing things that should and will happen is that we will gain perspective.  As did Asaph of old, we too will “perceive” (NASB) what really is!  Our outlook will change! Our hearts will be renewed!  Our souls will find rest! Our despair will evaporate.  And we will be empowered for another week to serve our King faithfully and boldly!  It’s like each Sunday we get a brand new pair of glasses!  No scratches, no out-of-date prescriptions, no blurred lines between the truth and the devil’s lies. Just renewed vision!  The miracle of sight that happens only in corporate worship is of infinitely more value than a thousand Christian podcasts, videos, devotionals, or personal quite times, as wonderful and beneficial as these blessings can be.  There is simply no substitute for the assembly of the redeemed before the One who shed His Son’s blood for them!
In just six days we will meet again together in “the sanctuary of God.”  In the meantime, don’t be fooled by what you ‘see.’  Remember that with the Lord, what you see isn’t necessarily what you get.  Come expecting to receive a gracious adjustment from the very One who gave sight to the blind!  Let the Divine Eye Doctor give you a new outlook on life!
You are my joy, my treasure, my beloved in Christ!  I love you all, always!
    Mike

    Sermon Preview:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

This coming Lord’s Day we will look again at the inspired words of Hebrews 12:14-17.

You will remember that we have identified five exhortations in this section of the epistle, each having to do with running the great “race that is set before us” (12:1). These appeals answer the question, ‘What now?’ That is, what do we do now that we know about the purpose and eternal benefits of the afflictions that our Father brings into our lives (vv. 4-11)?

We might list the exhortations this way:

One: Raise Your Hands and Walk a Straight Path (vv. 12-13)

    Two: Fervently Pursue Peace (v.14)

Three: Fervently Pursue Holiness (v. 14)

    Four: Don’t Come Short of God’s Grace (v. 15)

Five: Don’t Tolerate Sin’s Bitter Pollution (vv. 15-17)

Last Sunday, we examined the first two of these exhortations. This week, we will consider the remaining three as we learn how to prepare ourselves for ‘racing’ well.

I hope to see you all on the Lord’s Day, and I love you dearly!

    Mike

    Children’s Ministry:

Praise the Lord for a nursery full of covenant children! We had 11 in our classroom this past Sunday. And we have 5 ladies who are expecting babies in the next 6 months!

We have not yet had doors open for us to have more paid staff so we are once again reassessing our nursery plan and making changes that we think will be helpful until we can hire someone. Thank you so very much for your patience as we have made so many changes in the past year. Going from consistent full nursery staff to only one has been a challenge for all. Praise the Lord for Irene!

We will plan to open both nurseries as of this coming Sunday. Hooray! But we will have to do so with leadership from our mothers.

Baby Nursery: Mrs. Irene, Member Volunteer
Toddler Nursery: Rotating Mom Lead, Member Volunteer, Teen Helper if need be

See the link below to sign up for the toddler nursery for the month of March:

    Rotating Mom Lead Toddler Nursery

Moms taking the lead will give our toddlers familiarity! Please make sure our volunteers know how much they are appreciated each week. What a wonderful and beautiful church body we are blessed to be a part of! It really does take a village.

I think this will also be a great way for us young moms to connect with older women in the church in a more intimate way than just exchanging greetings when we drop off and pick up our children.

Please let me know if I can do anything for you! And if you know anyone who would be a good fit in our nursery on a weekly basis, send them to Ashley 🙂
