Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

Those who have become acquainted with the Epistle of Jude will surely be aware of the many strange things we find among its twenty-five inspired verses. For sure, interpreters and preachers find themselves seriously challenged as they navigate the perplexing terrain confronting them in this letter. Among the most difficult portions of this epistle is the reference to the sin of the angels in verse 6:

And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day.”

This brief mention of evil angels and their eternal destiny occurs in the context of three historic examples of divine judgment extracted from the Old Testament:

    • The sin and judgment of Israel in the wilderness (v. 5)
    • The sin and judgment of the angels (v. 6)
    • The sin and judgment of the people of Sodom and Gomorrah (v. 7)

You will notice that these examples are not in chronological order. Rather, they are set forth thematically for maximum impact.

By means of these three examples, Jude is showing that the false teachers, who have “crept in unnoticed” among the Christian brethren (v. 4), will certainly have their day in court before God’s bar of justice. And, as these three accounts make awfully clear, it will not end well for them!

On Sunday, we will begin our exploration of these admittedly difficult verses (vv. 5-7). And as we do, we will seek to draw greater measures of assurance and hope as we serve our Savior and Lord each day.

Let me encourage you to do a little advanced reading and study in preparation for our sermons from this passage.

    Read:

The sin and divine judgment of Israel in the wilderness–Numbers 13-14:38

The sin and divine judgment of the angels–Genesis 6:1-4 (1 Peter 3:18-20; 2 Peter 2:1-10)

The sin and divine judgment of the people of Sodom and Gomorrah–Genesis 18:16-19:29

I love you all, and can’t wait to see you on the Lord’s Day,

    Mike

    Summer Schedule:

Sunday School is on hiatus and will resume September 11. During the Summer, fellowship will begin each week at 10 AM, with our regular service of worship beginning at 10:30 AM.

    Greeting Ministry:

We are looking for church members who are willing to help us form a team of greeters at Christ Presbyterian Church. The primary function of this ministry is to welcome visitors and members on Sunday mornings. This, of course, is a very tangible and accessible way to serve and support the work and worship of the church. Greeting our visitors and members helps our church body fulfill the command to “welcome one another as Christ as welcomed you, for the glory of God” (Rom 15:7). You may serve individually or with your spouse or family. If you are looking for a way to get plugged in to the work of the church, please consider this ministry. You can reach out to Matthew Elliott matthew@christpreshamptoncove.org for more information.

    The CARE Center:

CPC will help restock the CARE Center food pantry in August.  If you can help, please place items below in box in narthex: cereal, powdered milk, protein drinks (like Ensure), shampoo, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, adult diapers, laundry detergent, dish soap. See Joe Sims with questions.

    Sermon Preview:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

If you have been studying the Book of Jude along with us this summer, you’ve doubtless been moved by the language of the fourth verse in the epistle. In this verse, Jude tells us what has prompted his letter, and what has triggered his exhortation to the members of the church to “contend for the faith” (v. 3).

If we were to summarize the situation in view, it would be that the pure, saving grace of the Gospel was being contorted and deformed into something very different. Jude says that the enemies of the Gospel have sought to “pervert the grace of our God” (v. 4). So, there it is. This is the emergency that led the brother of our Lord to pen his note to his fellow-believers in Christ.

The devil, our “ancient foe,” has a number of strategies he uses against the Church and the Gospel. Sometimes it is persecution. Sometimes it is by means of extreme temptation. And then there is his devilish attempt to pollute or change the Gospel message itself. This is the very thing that Jude’s readers were facing. Satan had deployed into the Church a cast of powerfully attractive spokesmen who did not explicitly disavow the grace of God, but sought to twist it into something else altogether.

On Sunday, we will learn more about this demonic strategy, and how we may guard our hearts and our fellowship from such a twisted grace.

I love you all so much,

    Mike

    Sermon Preview:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

This Sunday we will continue our look at the three-fold word of assurance found in Jude 1:1. You will remember that before Jude sends his readers into the world to “contend” for the faith of the Gospel, he provides them with the encouragement every Christian soldier needs. Having reminded us of our call to salvation, Jude will add to this the assurance of our Father’s love for us, as well as the promise that we are always being guarded and kept safe for our Savior. Our focus for this message will be upon the fact that we are “beloved in God the Father,” and are “kept for Jesus Christ.”

You can see that this is one of the wonderful places in the New Testament that provides for us the guarantee of the security, or the preservation, of our salvation in Christ. We also find addition help with this in our confessional standards. The Westminster Shorter Catechism explains our theology of the effectual calling to salvation, the love of God for us, as well as our Father’s preservation of our salvation:

    Q67: What is effectual calling?

A67: Effectual calling is the work of God’s almighty power and grace, whereby (out of his free and special love to his elect, and from nothing in them moving him thereunto) he doth, in his accepted time, invite and draw them to Jesus Christ, by his word and Spirit; savingly enlightening their minds, renewing and powerfully determining their wills, so as they (although in themselves dead in sin) are hereby made willing and able freely to answer his call, and to accept and embrace the grace offered and conveyed therein.

Q79: May not true believers, by reason of their imperfections, and the many temptations and sins they are overtaken with, fall away from the state of grace?

A79: True believers, by reason of the unchangeable love of God, and his decree and covenant to give them perseverance, their inseparable union with Christ, his continual intercession for them, and the Spirit and seed of God abiding in them, can neither totally nor finally fall away from the state of grace, but are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation.

I believe that the Lord has a wonderful word of comfort and assurance for us this Lord’s Day, and I can’t wait to discover it with you!

    All my love,

    Mike

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

This coming Lord’s Day, we will begin exploring what we have called the ‘three-fold assurance of salvation’ that Jude has employed to sustain his readers for the spiritual battle that confronts every generation of Christians. In verse 1 of his epistle Jude assures us that if we have received the gift of salvation in Christ Jesus, we are among “those who are called, beloved in God and Father, and kept for Jesus Christ.”

Each of these terms reveal something wonderful about the nature of our salvation, and, when understood, each offers profound assurance that despite the intensity of the raging conflict we are engaged in, we are safe and secure in our gracious standing before God. On Sunday, our focus will be upon the fact that all who belong to Christ are “called.” As we will see, this is one of the richest terms in all of Scripture, stretching back all the way to Abraham and terminating magnificently in our Lord Jesus Himself.

As you prepare for Sunday worship, let me suggest that you take a moment to read 1 Peter 2:9-12 where you will find some help understanding Jude’s use of the word “called.” Note especially verse 9 where Peter (like Jude does) applies the Old Testament promises, originally made to Israel, to the Church.

I hope to see you all on Sunday!

    Love always,

    Mike

    Sermon Preview:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

Those of you who have lived in Huntsville for a while know that aside from being the ‘Rocket City,’ Huntsville is also known as ‘The Hockey Capital of the South.’

Years ago, when UAH fielded an NCAA Division 2 Men’s Hockey program, the Chargers won two national championships. And then there is the success of minor league professional hockey here in Huntsville. Anyone who has ever attended a Huntsville Havoc game knows how well the city supports the sport.

I would also venture a guess that when most people reflect on the sport of hockey they think about . . . fighting! The fisticuffs that go along with the game are often enjoyed more than the skating and puck handling!

All of this reminds me of that old joke about going to a boxing match, only to see a hockey game break out! Fighting just goes with the sport.

Well, there is at least one Epistle in the New Testament that has fighting as it main theme and purpose. The inspired letter written by a man called “Jude” has one fundamental exhortation for all those who are believers in Christ. In the third verse of the one-chapter note, Jude enjoins all Christians to “contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.”

Paraphrased, this means that all believers in Christ, not just the professional theologians and apologists, are to fight for the faith. And it’s not that we picked the fight, but rather that the fight has come to us! For those my age and older, Billy Joel’s hit song, We Didn’t Start the Fire, might be playing in your head!

In verse 4 Jude says that the conflict started when “certain people” entered the church with teaching that twisted “the grace of God,” contorting it into “sensuality.” With such a poisonous distortion of the gospel seeping into the fellowship of true believers, Jude orders every Christian into the war. In the same way that fighting just goes with the sport of hockey, the war for the truth always accompanies true Christianity.

On Sunday we will begin our series of messages from this little New Testament letter. So, make sure to bring your skates and sticks, and especially your boxing gloves!

Also on Sunday, we will be blessed by a visit from our missionaries to Ireland, Seth and Jessica Lewis. Seth will be giving us a missions report in worship, and they will also have a display set up in the narthex where you may learn more about their work for the gospel in Ireland.

I love you all so very much,

    Mike
