    Sermon Preview:

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Before I give you a brief preview of Sunday’s sermon from Jude 1:8-10, I want to tell you about three important things that will be happening soon at CPC.

    Fall Sunday School

First, Sunday School will resume on September 11 at 9:15 AM.   On that day we will go back to our original (pre-COVID) Sunday Schedule of Sunday School from 9:15-10:00 AM, Fellowship Time from 10:00-10:30 AM, and Worship at 10:30 AM.

As always, there will be Sunday School classes for all ages.  Our Adults will be studying the topic of the ‘Biblical Doctrine of Sin.’  We will be guided in our study by the extremely helpful book authored by Dr. Mark Jones (PCA pastor and theologian) entitled Knowing Sin: Seeing A Neglected Doctrine Through The Eyes Of The Puritans (Moody Publishers, 2022).  I would encourage you to go ahead and secure your copy and begin reading in preparation for our studies.

    Officer Nominations

Beginning on Sunday September 4 through Sunday October 2 we will be receiving nominations for the Offices of Ruling Elder and DeaconNomination Forms will be available for you to pick up next Sunday. Full instructions will be emailed to you on Wednesday of next week.

CPC Town Hall Meeting and Dinner

At the recent meeting of the PCA’s General Assembly in June, a couple of very important overtures regarding proposed changes in the PCA Book of Church Order were approved and sent down to the eighty-eight Presbyteries for debate and vote.   If these overtures are approved by two-thirds of the Presbyteries, they will be voted on for final approval (by simple majority) next June at the General Assembly meeting in Memphis.

Your Session would like to have a meeting of the Congregation to discuss these overtures with you, to take your questions, and to share with you our view of the future of the PCA.  We had initially planned to have this meeting in mid-September. However, there was a delay in getting these overtures handed down to the Presbyteries (they have just now been formally passed down for vote), and this means that our Presbytery, Providence Presbytery, will possibly vote on them at our November meeting (at the earliest), or at our February 2023 meeting.   The Session believes that our discussion time will be much more fruitful after our own Presbytery has voted on these overtures.  This means that we are not exactly sure when our ‘Town Hall’ meeting will take place.  But when we can set the date, we will plan to meet on a Sunday night with a fellowship dinner to follow.  In the meantime, please pray fervently and faithfully for our Denomination and for our Presbytery and her Churches.  And then over the next several weeks, watch for emails from the Session that will explain these overtures, and why we believe they are very important for the health and future of the PCA.

    Back to the Devil’s Workshop

On Sunday, we will continue our look at Jude 1:8-10.  In these verses, Jude presents what we might call ‘Satan’s plan to create the perfect false teacher.’  Jude is, in effect, giving us a glimpse inside the Devil’s workshop where he is feverishly engaged in the task of constructing and deploying false prophets throughout the world to damage and destroy the Church. Having looked at the first two of the four diabolical components of a false teacher, we will examine the remaining ones on Sunday.

I can’t wait to come before our Lord with you!

    Mike

    Sermon Preview:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Here’s a really strange question for you:

If you were going to construct the perfect false teacher who would do maximum damage to the Church, what would be some of the components you’d use (I told you it was strange!).

Well, the reason I have raised such an odd question is that the Epistle of Jude tells us what one needs in order to do this very thing!   As you remember, Jude is raising the alarm about the presence of such bogus teachers within the Church.  In the course of this warning, he depicts their main features.

In verses 8-10, the Lord’s brother sets forth four ‘essential ingredients’ for the construction of the perfect ‘inside man’ who can afflict maximum damage to the Church and to the Gospel of Christ.

We might identify these elements this way:

First: You Need a Corrupted Source of Authority (v. 8)

Second: You Need an Ungodly Pattern of Living Based Upon this Corrupted Authority (v. 8)

Third: You Need a Prideful Rejection of Christ’s Lordship, Especially as Expressed in His Word (v. 8)

Fourth: You Need the Assertion of Their Own Spiritual Superiority Over All Others (vv. 8-10)

This coming Lord’s Day, we will begin looking at these four components, focusing this week upon the first two, and then returning the following week to examine the remaining ones.

I hope you will study this passage over the weekend, and pray fervently for the preaching of God’s glorious Word!

    I love you all!

    Mike

    Sermon Preview:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

One of the greatest joys and blessings we could ever have as a Church family is in seeing one of our own young men, one of our ‘covenant children,’ pursuing God’s call to the Gospel ministry.   As you know, Gannon Miles (son of Scott and Stefanie Miles, and grand-son of Emily Ashcraft) is one of these young, God-called men.

Gannon is currently a Master of Divinity student at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi (you’ll remember that we pray for him each Lord’s Day in worship).  Gannon is also a ministry candidate under the oversight of our Session and our Presbytery, and, following his graduation from seminary, he will be seeking a place of ministry and preparing for his exams for licensure and ordination.

This coming Sunday, Gannon will be preaching for us from 1 John 5:1-5.  The Session has provided this opportunity for Gannon to preach for us as a critical component of his ministry training.  As you can imagine, it is both a privilege and a daunting task to preach to the ‘home crowd’ in your home town!

Gannon’s sermon is entitled, ‘Who Shall Overcome the World?’  Providentially, it will be right in line with the encouragements and challenges we have encountered in our current study of Jude.  I know that you will all be in fervent and expectant prayer for Gannon as he delivers God’s Word to us!   I look forward to hearing what the Lord has to say to me from this passage!

I love you all and can’t wait to see you on Sunday!

    Mike

A Special Announcement from Our Deacons Regarding Service Opportunities

    The Deacon Yokefellow Ministry

The Deacons of CPC are looking for church members who are willing to help them form several teams that will comprise the Deacon Yokefellow Ministry. Sermon Preview:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

As you are well-aware, there are some places in the Word of God where we encounter significant difficulties with interpretation.  Some passages are more obscure than others, at least as we seek to get to the meaning of words penned more than two-thousand years ago. What might be problematic for us today was not so difficult for believers in the past. They were much closer to the events recorded in the Bible, not only in terms of time, but also in terms of culture.

One such place of immense interpretive difficulty is found in Jude 1:6. In this verse, Jude provides the second of three examples of God’s righteous judgment upon those who turn away from Him in unbelief, practice moral anarchy, and seek to harm His people.  Jude makes a reference to,

the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling.”

As we read this verse, we have a number of critical questions:

    When did this sin happen?

What did this sin consist of?

Are there other Biblical passages that relate to this sin?

What does this account have to do with the danger of false teachers?

What did Jude’s original audience know about this sin, and how did they interpret and apply it?

And perhaps the most pressing question of all is, why should we care about the details of this strange happening?

Well, this is what our sermon will deal with this coming Lord’s Day.  I am convinced that since this verse is in Scripture, it is a divinely inspired and timely word for us today.  Despite the challenges related to its interpretation, the Spirit of God has included it in the Bible for our edification.

Let’s pray that as we study it together, we will learn more about the Gospel and the grace and victory of our Lord and Savior!

I love you all so dearly,

    Mike

The primary function of this ministry is to welcome visitors and members on Sunday mornings. This, of course, is a very tangible and accessible way to serve and support the work and worship of the church. Greeting our visitors and members helps our church body fulfill the command to “welcome one another as Christ as welcomed you, for the glory of God” (Rom 15:7). You may serve individually or with your spouse or family. If you are looking for a way to get plugged in to the work of the church, please consider this ministry. You can reach out to Matthew Elliott matthew@christpreshamptoncove.org for more information.

Step Morgan is a graduate of Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson MS and is currently serving as the senior pastor at Grace Presbyterian Church in Cookville, TN. He is married to Jessica Morgan and they have five children. Step will be sharing his personal testimony of his bicycle accident in 2020 and his reflections as a Christian man leading his family in a time of crisis.  A catered breakfast will be served.  A donation basket will be available to help offset the cost of the caterer.  A donation of $5.00 to $10.00 is suggested.
