    Sermon Preview:

How well do you know Jesus?
Does that sound like a crazy thing to ask you? Well, consider the Apostle Paul’s great, but rather strange, prayer: “that I may know Him”–Philippians 3:10.
Of course, Paul knew Jesus!  How could he not have known Him? But he still seeks to “know Him.” And this desire is clearly an all-consuming one!  And even more remarkable is the fact that this supreme desire was both experienced and expressed while Paul was a prisoner for the Gospel, confined in Rome!
We could refine our question just a bit: How well do you know the purpose for the coming of Jesus into the world?  Why did He take upon Himself a human nature? What was the reason for His birth in the manger?  Why did He do and say the things he did?
Obviously, each of these questions is answered with great clarity and detail in that section of the Bible we call the New Testament Epistles.  If one reads those inspired books, then there can be no doubt about why Jesus came, what He did on this earth, and why He said the things He said, and made the astounding claims He made!
But in the good providence of God, we have four other inspired books in our Bibles called The Gospels.  And these four books do not read like the New Testament letters. Rather, they tell a story!  And as we read these four accounts of the life of Jesus, we come to “know Him” in a way that is different than when we read the Epistles.
This coming Lord’s Day, we will begin a trip though one of these Gospels, the one written by Luke, the only Gentile who authored a book contained in Scripture.  This man, a physician and historian by trade, will help us to come to know Jesus by traveling with Him as Luke tells His story.
And this week we are beginning at an odd place with our Lord’s life-history according to Luke. We will not start with His birth in Bethlehem, but with the beginning of our Lord’s public ministry when He was already about 30 years old.
Our sermon text will be Luke 3:21-38, and we will consider how He began His work. Or, more accurately, how He was prepared to begin His work on earth.
I can’t wait to see you all, and I love you dearly!

    Sermon Preview:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

On Sunday, our sermon series on the Epistle of Jude will come to an end. We will take a look at the final two verses in the letter. What we discover here at the end of the Epistle is a glorious doxology!

It would be hard to imagine any more encouraging and reassuring words than the ones recorded in verses 24-25.

Our message will be structured upon two key points that we discover in Jude’s final words:

There is a grand promise to believe (v. 24)

There is a worthy response to offer (v. 25)

For all those Christians who are battle-weary, fearful in the fight for the faith, unsure of final victory, and assailed by the enemy’s persistent taunts, there is the greatest news of all!  I can’t wait to explore God’s Word with each of you this Lord’s Day!

Looking ahead to next week, the Lord willing we will begin a new series of messages from the Gospel of Luke.  We will be tracing Luke’s record of the public ministry of Jesus from Luke 3:21 through 22:53.

Before I go, please remember that Officer Nominations are now underway.  The last day to receive your ballots will be Sunday October 2.

You are my joy, and I love you all dearly,

    Mike

    Sermon Preview:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

    Now what?

This is the subject of Jude’s inspired Epistle as we approach the conclusion of his brief letter to a Church that was being harassed and troubled by false teachers.  As we learned last Sunday, the Lord’s half-brother provides four pastoral exhortations to his people in Jude 1:21-22. We have identified them as:

Constantly build up the Church (one another) in the Christian faith

Faithfully pray in the Holy Spirit

Abide in the love of God

Wait for the mercy of Jesus

Having examined the first of these last week, this coming Lord’s Day we will consider the other three points of instruction and encouragement.

Our final message from Jude will be on September 25 (we will look at verses 24-25).  Then, beginning on October 2, the Lord willing we will commence a study of the Gospel of Luke. I’ve entitled this sermon series  ‘On the Move With Jesus Through the Gospel of Luke.’  We will focus upon our Lord’s public ministry as outlined in Luke, chapters 4 through 23.  Let me encourage you to begin reading Luke as we prepare to take this journey with our Savior.

I love you all, and never cease praying for you!

    Mike

    Sermon Preview:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

This coming Lord’s Day, September 11, we get back to ‘normal’ after our summer break.

Sunday School resumes at 9:15 AM with classes for all ages.  As we have announced, our Adults will be meeting in the Worship Center and studying the Doctrine of Sin (based upon the book by Dr. Mark Jones, Knowing Sin).

Then, immediately following Worship we will be sharing in our Second Sunday Lunch Fellowship. All of our members and guests are invited to stay and enjoy a delicious meal and warm Christian fellowship!

Our Sermon for this Sunday will come from Jude 1:20-21. I have entitled it, “Now What?”  As Jude brings his brief letter to a conclusion, he supplies final instructions to the Church, to the “beloved” ones, as to what all believers should be doing, both in light of the dangers of false teaching, and in view of our Lord’s immanent return.  Our focus will be upon his exhortation to be busy “building yourselves up in your most holy faith” (v. 20).

Finally, let me ask you to continue to pray fervently for our Officer Nominations which are now being received through Sunday October 2.  All communing CPC members may nominate men for the Offices of Ruling Elder and Deacon.  Nomination forms are available in the narthex, and after completing and signing them, you may place them in one of the Offering Boxes.

    I love you all!

    Mike

    Sermon Preview:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

As we get older, few things are as troublesome (and upsetting!) as a fading memory!

Familiar names don’t seem to be recalled with the same ease and speed, dates are all jumbled up, and you don’t remember where you parked your car when you visited the shopping center, or where you last placed your purse or wallet.  That’s just the way it is. Everybody deals with it to some degree (you younger ones just wait, your time is coming!).

But just saying this, just accepting this as a ‘normal’ part of aging, doesn’t really help very much.  This is why there is nothing short of an explosion of new products on the market that are ‘guaranteed’ to fix our memory problems.  Our memories are a precious thing.  Our ability to recall what we want, when we want, is a very big deal indeed!

But believe it or not, the ability to remember, or we might say the discipline of remembering, is critical to the spiritual life and wellbeing of every believer and every New Testament Church.  We see this in Jude 1:17 where the brother of our Lord puts it in the form of an imperative, a command: “remember, beloved . . . .

I don’t want to give it away now, but I think you’ll be very interested in discovering what it is that we are to “remember” and why.  What does a good memory have to do with faithfulness to Jesus?  Inquiring minds want to know.  I can’t wait to discover the answer with you on Sunday!

Now. . . where did I put my phone?

I love you so very much!

    Mike

    Mentoring:
We wanted to invite our men to consider a one-on-one men’s mentorship at CPC. Are you working through questions of fatherhood and marriage? Wondering how to navigate and lead in your work or home? Moving through the seasons of life can be challenging, especially in early family life and career! We would invite those who are interested in growing in their faith and leadership to consider a mentor program at CPC. If you are interested, there are seasoned men within the church that can offer wise and thoughtful counsel to help guide you in some of the specific arenas of your life. We would love for you to consider participating in a program that can offer perspective and counsel in order that “iron may sharpen iron.” If you are interested, please contact David O’Neil for more information on how to get plugged in!
