Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

The title of the famous novel by North Carolina native Thomas Wolfe, You Can’t Go Home Again, is a very appropriate heading for the episode we discover in Luke 4:22-30.  In these verses, Luke tells us about our Lord’s visit to Nazareth, his boyhood home, and His appearance in the synagogue there.  While it was the place where Jesus had lived for so long, His return trip did not go well, to say the very least!  In fact, His visit culminated with what the late New Testament scholar Leon Morris has called, an attempted lynching.

Why was Jesus treated this way? Why was He rejected back home, by the very ones who knew Him so well? Why would His message of “good news” for the suffering and lost transform the synagogue congregation into a violent mob?  Why would Jesus, as far as we know, never again go back home to Nazareth?

On Sunday, our message will once again come from this story that is found Luke 4:22-30.  As we investigate what happened that day in Nazareth, our Lord’s ministry will come more clearly into focus.  And we will also learn something very important about the condition of the human heart.

Thank you so much for your prayers as we prepare to deliver God’s Word.

I love you all with all my heart!

    Mike

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

As we prepare our hearts for this coming Lord’s Day worship, let me encourage you to read Luke 4:14-22. In this section of Luke’s Gospel, we find our Lord in attendance at the synagogue in Nazareth, His boyhood home.  This visit to the synagogue occurs during the Lord’s Galilean preaching tour, which is introduced to us in verses 14-15.

Perhaps a couple of years after His baptism and temptation (according to some New Testament scholars), Jesus goes back home to preach in the very synagogue that He attended as a boy.  But far from a normal Sabbath day worship service, something most startling happened there!

While this same episode is also recorded by Matthew and Mark, Luke supplies us with significantly more detail of the events that transpired back then on that amazing Sabbath in the synagogue.  Verse 22 provides us with a glimpse of the reaction of the worshippers when the service came to its conclusion:

And all spoke well of Him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from His mouth. And they said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?”

What made the crowd say such things?  Why did they marvel that Jesus was the one they all knew as the son of Joseph? What part did this visit to his boyhood home and place of worship play in our Lord’s public ministry?

I can’t wait to find out with you as we gather before our Lord this coming Sunday!

    I love you all,

    Mike

The snacks should be brought to church on Sunday, October 23rd, and will be delivered to the campus on Monday evening October 24., at 6:45 PM.

Additionally, please pray for the young men and women who attend the RUF large group meeting. Many hearts are turned to the Lord during these sessions.

    Thank you for your help.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

What kind of a Savior do we have?

Well, that’s surely a strange question for your pastor to raise.  After all, that question has been answered definitively, and if you did not know the answer you would not be a Christian nor part of our Church family!  As we look back to our Lord’s life, and as we also reflect upon what Scripture has declared to be true about Him, His identity is not the least uncertain as far as we are concerned!

But as Luke tells us in his Gospel, the question concerning the kind of a Savior Jesus would be was the very first challenge our Lord faced as He commenced His earthly ministry.  In Luke 4:3-13, the inspired record of Christ’s temptation in the wilderness, the devil twice raises the issue with the mocking challenge, “If you are the Son of God . . .” (vv. 3, 9).

The three temptations the devil hurled at Jesus were strategically and diabolically designed to seduce Him into becoming a different kind of Savior than He came to this lost world to be.  Would Jesus establish His Kingdom by some other means than following the will of His Father, which would be by the way of vicarious suffering and agony on our behalf?  Would He avoid the shame, pain, and ignominy of the cross and take the way of earthly power and glory instead?  Just what kind of King and Savior would Jesus be?

This Sunday, we will consider our Lord’s experience of temptation as told by Luke.  And when we are finished, there will be no doubt about it!  We have, as that beautiful song exclaims, a “Wonderful, merciful Savior, precious Redeemer and Friend”!

I love you all so much!

    Sermon Preview:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

As you prepare your hearts for worship this coming Sunday, let me encourage you to read and prayerfully reflect upon Luke 4:1-13.  What we find here is Luke’s inspired account of the wilderness temptation of Jesus, which occurred immediately after His baptism in the Jordan by John.

As you will remember, there were three temptations hurled at Jesus by the devil, each answered by our Savior with a quotation from the Book of Deuteronomy.  It almost goes without saying that this entire episode is shrouded in overwhelming mystery, and as we contemplate the details of this event our minds are filled with a multitude of questions:

Why did this happen, and happen when it did?

How could the Divine Son of God be tempted?

    Were these temptations real temptations?

    Could Jesus have sinned?

Does this make God the author of sin and evil?

How does this strange encounter fit in to the public ministry of Jesus?

What does this story have to do with our salvation?

As we approach this most amazing and critical event in the life of Jesus, we are going to ‘tap the brakes’ and proceed slowly and with great caution.  What we will find here will be nothing short of amazing!

I look forward to our worship together this Lord Day, and I love you all with all my heart!
