    SERMON PREVIEW:
Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

Have you ever considered the common language we all seem to speak at Christmastime, both among those who are believers in Christ and those who are not?

There are certain phrases and key words that appear over and again, in Christmas cards, Christmas carols, on the decorations in our homes or in our yards, inscribed on ornaments, tee-shirts, postage stamps, and that also flow naturally from our mouths.  I’m thinking of words and phrases such as:

‘Peace on earth,’ ‘God-Incarnate,’ ‘Glory in the highest,’ ‘Rejoice,’ ‘Joy,’ ‘Hope,’ ‘Salvation,’ ‘Light,’ and many others.

Well, of course we know that this ‘language of Christmas’ comes from the Bible, and from the true story of the incarnation and birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus.  Christmas has a very specific language that we should never take for granted.

That brings us to our series of messages for this Advent of 2022.

Over the next five Sundays, culminating on Christmas Day as we worship together, we will be looking carefully at this ‘Christmas language,’ giving consideration to these familiar words and phrases that tell us what happened there in Bethlehem so long ago.

This coming Lord’s Day our text will be John 1:1-5, 14 and we will examine John’s most unique Christmas phrase, “The Word Became Flesh.”

As we celebrate this blessed Season together, I wanted to provide you with a little Advent Devotional Guide that will correspond with our preaching series.  Each of the next five weeks will focus upon one of the Christmas words or phrases that we discover in Scripture. Along with the sermon texts and themes, there are other suggested Scripture readings, plus readings from the Westminster Confession and the Heidelberg Catechism.

I pray that you will be blessed richly as you direct your hearts and minds toward the greatest Gift and most wonderful mystery of all!

I love you so very much!

    Mike

    Sermon Preview:

My Dear Ones in the Lord,
As we prepare for this coming Lord’s Day Worship, let me encourage you to read and meditate upon Luke 7:1-10.  In this passage, we find another episode from the life of Jesus that will help us to understand more about Him and all that He accomplished in His earthly ministry.
As you will discover, this is another one of the many miracle accounts of physical healing that we find in the Gospels. What’s especially remarkable about this particular episode is how it happened, and the identities of the people involved in it.
Like all of the stories of Jesus in the New Testament, this one is also most instructive and encouraging for those who belong to Him. And, as was often the case following such displays of grace and power, this one should leave us in awe of the One who has also healed us of our spiritual diseases and raised us to new life!
I love you all so very much!
    Mike
PS:  Our next Monday Encouragement will be sent to you on November 28.  In the meantime, I pray that you will all enjoy a most blessed Thanksgiving week!!

    Sermon Preview:

My faithful Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus our Lord,
We’ve all heard the familiar adage, ‘Desperate times call for desperate measures.’
When there is an extreme need or problem before us, we often take extraordinary actions to address or alleviate it. We see this very thing played out dramatically in the earthly ministry of our Lord.
In Luke 5:17-26 we discover an inspired story about a paralyzed man and his loyal friends who desperately want to come into the presence of Jesus, fully assured that the Savior can and will perform a miracle of healing.   But, as Luke explains, it proves to be no easy task to get close to Jesus.  Undeterred, however, the friends of the paralyzed man take drastic measures and are successful in delivering their helpless comrade into the arms of the Savior.
But there is much more to this story than the eventual healing of the paralyzed man, as amazing as it surely was!  There are three critical themes woven though the fabric of this miracle-story that we need to investigate: the nature of true saving faith, the Sovereign authority of Jesus, and the need for the forgiveness of sins.
As we take yet another step with Jesus, guided by Dr. Luke’s Gospel, we will learn some amazing things about the One we call our Lord and Savior!
I look forward to gathering with you on the Lord’s Day, and worshipping our mighty King!
I love you all so much,
    Mike

    Sermon Preview:

    Dear Ones in the Lord,

In the midst of our busy lives, wouldn’t it be great just to hang a ‘Gone Fishing’ sign on the door of our homes or offices!

As I drive by the many small lakes that dot our neighborhood, I often see what is a most pleasant and compelling sight (and one that makes me very envious, I’m sad to confess!).  There will be a grand-father there with his grand-children, fishing, or teaching them how to.  There might be a group of little boys with their rods and reels and worms, hoping to catch a big one.  Or I’ll see one solitary soul, sitting quietly in a chair, cane pole extended over the water, and the little red and white float bobbing up and down on the ripples.   Just beholding such scenes provides me with a brief fraction of tranquility as I enjoy that moment with them vicariously.

Well, this Lord’s Day we will not only gather for worship and praise, but we will take a little fishing trip!  But this expedition on the water will be unlike any we’ve ever seen, experienced, or even dreamed of!  Something most unusual is going to occur.  Something inexplicable!  A truly life-changing event!

Our sermon text will be taken from Luke 5:1-11.  It’s about fishing.  But not the kind of fishing that one would normally engage in!  We’ll be fishing with Jesus!  And since He is our fishing Guide, we can expect the unexpected! We can anticipate that He will tell us something wonderful about Himself and His Kingdom, but also something important about being His disciples!  I can’t wait for Sunday to come!

    Important News From Providence Presbytery

On this past Tuesday, our local Presbytery, ‘Providence,’ met for our quarterly gathering.  As we had previously shared with you, our General Assembly recently handed down twelve ‘Overtures’ related to potential changes in our Book of Church Order, three of which deal with the examination of ministerial candidates and their moral qualifications for Church Office.

These three proposed changes to the BCO were prompted by our recent debates on same-sex attraction.  At last June’s General Assembly in Birmingham, these Overtures were sent to each of the PCA’s eighty-eight Presbyteries for approval.   Each Presbytery will be voting upon these changes in the next couple of months, and, if two-thirds of them approve these amendments, we will be voting upon them again for final passage next June at our national meeting in Memphis.  At that time, the formal passage of these changes and their incorporation into the BCO will require only a simple majority.

I am happy to report to you that each of these three critical items passed at our local meeting on Tuesday.  What I consider to be the most critical of the three would add the following statement to the Book of Church Order (BCO 7):

Men who describe themselves as homosexual, even those who describe themselves as homosexual and claim to practice celibacy by refraining from homosexual conduct, are disqualified from holding office in the Presbyterian Church in America.”

This item passed Providence Presbytery on Tuesday by a vote of 37 for, and 13 against, with 4 abstentions (a 69% margin of approval).

As you can see, this amendment would prohibit the language of ‘Gay Christian,’ or ‘Gay but celibate Christian’ as applied to Teaching and Ruling Elders, and Deacons.  Any man identifying in this way would not be qualified for ordained leadership in the PCA.

Please continue to pray for the other Presbyteries that have yet to vote on these amendments (many will be voting later this month, and some in December and January).  We should all pray most fervently that two-thirds of the Presbyteries will also pass these items and, that next summer, the General Assembly will do the same for the glory of God and the purity of our Lord’s Church.

When we receive news from the other Presbyteries regarding the outcome of their voting, the CPC Session will be scheduling a Church-Wide Q&A on a Sunday night so that we may report, dialog, and pray with you about the status and future of the PCA.

And. . .Don’t Forget to Set Your Clock Back One Hour On Saturday Night!

I love you all so very much!!

    Mike
