Month: December 2022

  • Announcements – December 30 2022

    SERMON PREVIEW:
Beloved Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

This coming Lord’s Day is, of course, also New Year’s Day.  And with the conclusion of 2022 and the beginning of 2023 we have another opportunity to recount the manifold blessings of the past year and to anticipate those that will flow down most graciously from our Heavenly Father in the next twelve months.

The beginning of another new year also provides us with an appropriate occasion for hard thinking about the months to come.  If there were ever any ‘New Year’s advice’ to be found in the Word of God, surely it would be the words of Ephesians 5:15-17,

Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.”

There is another passage from Paul that also comes to mind.  In Colossians 1:10, the imprisoned Apostle says that we are to,

walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him.”

When we consider these Scripture passages together, we can identify a most significant theme as we begin a new year together.  It is ‘Living on Purpose.’

I would suggest that Paul’s exhortations, taken together, give us inspired help in formulating our plan for the coming twelve months, and beyond.  Will life ‘just happen’ in 2023? Or will we live our lives on purpose, with deliberate intent, with a worthy and all-consuming goal in view?

I look forward to probing this question more fully as we gather before our Lord this Sunday!

A Look Ahead to Winter/Spring Sunday School 2023

Remember, there is no Sunday School on January 1.  We will resume Sunday School for all ages on January 8 at 9:15 AM.

Our Adults will be studying the subject of ‘suffering.’  Our textbook will be Surprised by Suffering, by Dr. R. C. Sproul.

I love you all so much,

    Mike

    SERMON PREVIEW:

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Here on this Wednesday, we look forward to this year’s celebration of the birth of our Savior!
It is a most special blessing that the commemoration of the First Advent of the Lord falls on Sunday!  What better way is there to rejoice in His birth than to gather with our Church family in worship before our risen King!
Of course, our Christmas Day worship will be preceded by our annual Christmas Eve Service of Lessons, Carols, and the Lord’s Supper on Saturday night at 5:00 PM.  Our Scripture readings and Lord’s Table message will focus upon the word “peace.” Hearing this word, we can immediately recall the exclamation of the angelic multitude upon the birth of Jesus: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” (Luke 2:14).
But we must also consider what Jesus Himself declared later on as recorded in John 14:27. There, He said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”
Then, on Christmas Day at 10:30 AM we will focus upon the word “joy.”  Again, we can recall the message the angel spoke to the shepherds as found in Luke 2:10. He said, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.”
Then later, in John 15:11, Jesus would say to His disciples, “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.”
Let’s prepare our hearts to worship our Lord as we consider two of the most important words in ‘The Language of Christmas,’ “peace” and “joy.”
I look forward to a wonderful celebration of Christmas with each of you.  And please invite your family members and guests to come with you!
I love you all so dearly!
    Mike

    SERMON PREVIEW:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
This coming Sunday our Advent preaching series on ‘The Language of Christmas’ will continue as we consider the word ‘Salvation.’  Of course, this word finds its Advent connection in Luke 2:11–“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”
But there is another, perhaps unanticipated, Advent connection from Scripture that we will examine this Lord’s Day.  In John 3:16 we encounter what is arguably the most well-known verse in all of the Bible. And here in this context we find Jesus explaining to Nicodemus how one must be “born again” by the Spirit of God.  And then, of course, there is the magnificent declaration by our Savior that all who believe upon Him will experience the gift of “eternal life” and shall never “perish.” Advent, then, is all about salvation!
But what is this gift? What is its link to the Incarnate One?  How does the contemplation of this grand word ‘salvation’ prepare us for Christmas?
As we gather this Sunday, Dr. Matthew Elliott will preach from this most familiar passage on our beloved Savior and the eternal salvation He has won for all believing sinners.
Let me encourage you to lift Matthew up fervently in your prayers as he prepares to deliver God’s Word to us.  I eagerly look forward to leading our worship and hearing about our Great Deliverer, Lord, and Savior!
May our Father bless you all, and I can’t wait to see you on Sunday!
    Mike
