    SERMON PREVIEW:

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
As you prepare for this coming Lord’s Day worship, let me encourage you to mediate upon the words of Luke 10:21-24, our sermon passage for this week.  As you read and pray though it, you’ll discover that the theme of this section of Luke’s Gospel is joy, and specifically, the joy that our Lord Himself experienced.
We might ask, ‘What did Jesus our Savior find joy in during His earthly ministry?’ ‘What things prompted joy in His heart?’ And, ‘What is the relationship between the joy the Lord experienced and the joy we should have?’
The answer is set forth here in these verses, and we will consider them this Sunday as we open the Word together.
A Reminder to All of Our Men
Tomorrow morning (Saturday) is our Winter Men’s Prayer Breakfast. We will gather at the Church at 7:30 AM for a delicious meal and a special message from Rev. I love you all so very much,
    Mike

    SERMON PREVIEW:

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
This Sunday we will be examining a passage from the Gospel of Luke where our Savior sets forth what some have called ‘the cost of discipleship.’  In Luke 9:23-25 Jesus speaks of three costs, or requirements, that are imposed upon any who would seek to walk with Him. We see them in verse 23:
And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
Here we find that all disciples of Jesus must 1) deny themselves, 2) take up their own crosses each day, and 3) follow closely in His footsteps.
But how should we understand and apply these three requirements today?  What do they mean?
I look forward to probing these Words of Jesus with you this coming Lord’s Day!
    A Prayer Request
Please be in prayer for those in our Middle and High School Youth Group who are headed to a Christian camp near Pisgah, AL for the Annual ‘Roots’ Youth Retreat sponsored by our Presbytery.  We have fourteen of our youth attending this year.  Please lift them up in your prayers, as well as those adult chaperones accompanying them.
I love you all so much,
    Mike

    SERMON PREVIEW:

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
This coming Sunday, we will continue traveling along with Dr. Luke as we follow his inspired record of the life and ministry of our Savior.
Our sermon text will be taken from Luke 9:1-6.  It is in this passage that we find our Lord sending out the men He had summoned personally to be His Disciples and witnesses.  In verse 2, Luke tells us that Jesus “sent” them out to conduct a ministry that would be patterned after His.
This term “sent” is the word from which we get ‘apostle.’  The Apostles of Jesus, then, were the men directly commissioned by Him who witnessed first-hand His ministry as well as His death and resurrection. Here, they are dispatched into the region of Galilee in order to “proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal” (v. 2).
As you read this passage you’ll see that Jesus gives the Disciples some very interesting, if not odd, instructions before they go out (vv. 3-5). Why would Jesus speak this way and make such demands of them?
Within this passage we will discover two very important connection points. First, this passage will show us what our corporate mission is as a local body of Christ. Secondly, we will discover how we are to conduct our individual lives as those who have not only been made recipients of the saving grace and power of Jesus, but have also been ‘sent’ into the world by our Lord.
I can’t wait for Sunday to get here!
May our Father bless you all until we meet before Him, and remember that I love you all dearly,
    Mike

    SERMON PREVIEW:
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Before I introduce our sermon for this Sunday, here are just a couple of important announcements:

Sunday School resumes this week!  Our Adults will be engaging in a new study on suffering and the Christian life.  We will be examining the helpful book by Dr. R.C. Sproul, Surprised by Suffering.

This Sunday is our Second Sunday Fellowship Lunch after worship. I hope you will plan to join us!

    Sermon Preview

I once read of a professional airline pilot who was asked what it’s really like to fly the friendly skies for a living.  He replied that being a pilot is to experience very long periods of boredom, occasionally interrupted by moments of sheer terror!  I appreciate such honesty!!

I would suspect that if you asked the four Disciples of Jesus whom we know were professional fishermen (Andrew, Peter, James, and John), they would tell you much the same thing about their line of work as well.  Lots of boredom and just rocking along with the gentle waves, and moments of absolute terror!

We read of such a moment of sheer dread and panic on the water in Luke 8:22-25.

Here we find the beloved story of our Savior who brings calm to the turbulent sea that is sure to take the Twelve disciples to their watery grave.  You’re likely most familiar with Mark’s account of this same miracle, and the memorable words of Jesus recorded in Mark 4:39, “Peace, be still.”

As we continue our journey through the Gospel of Luke this coming Lord’s Day, we will go on a little boat ride with Jesus and the Disciples.  And let me warn you, it will get bumpy along the way!  But. . .there is a most amazing ending awaiting us!

As we examine this miracle on the water, we will learn a lot about our Lord and Savior, and we will also discover wonderful truths about our life together as the Body of Christ.

I love you all so very much!

    Mike

He will speak from a Biblical perspective on leadership lessons from his time in the military. We look forward to having our men come and eat, fellowship, and pray for one another! Click here to sign up for the prayer breakfast!

Please save the date for our Spring men’s retreat March 31st/April 1st. The retreat will be on Friday night and Saturday morning at Guntersville State Park. Dr. Calvert will be providing the teaching for the weekend. This is a great opportunity to fellowship with other men from our church. Please mark your calendars for the event! Further details will be forthcoming.
    Culinary Fellowship
We look forward to a men’s food and fellowship evening together towards the end of April or early May! This is a great event to simply meet other men from the church and enjoy some amazing food!
    Friday Bible Study
Our men’s Friday Bible study will resume on Friday, January 13th running through Friday, April 28th. Mike will be teaching on the book of Ephesians. While no book is required, John Stott’s commentary on Ephesians (The Bible Speaks Today Series) will be a helpful companion. The study runs from 11:30 to 12:30 each Friday.
