SERMON PREVIEW:

This Sunday we will have a message from Dr. Matthew Elliott. We look forward to seeing you Sunday morning for Sunday School at 9:15 and our service of worship at 10:30.

Book study on Christian marriage and relationships: A six-week small group study in the winter/spring beginning in the new year. This study will be a focus on Christian marriage and relationships using Vernick’s How To Act Right When Your Spouse Acts Wrong. Each evening will have a potluck style meal with study and prayer following. Childcare will be provided at the location for those who need it!
When: Wednesday nights (5:30-7:30) in winter/spring (January 18th/25th ~ February 1st/8th ~ March 1st/8th)

Men’s Ministry:
Men’s Retreat (Save the Date)

We wanted to invite you all to our men’s Spring retreat at Guntersville State Park! The retreat will be on a Friday evening through Saturday morning, March 31st and April 1st. Given our culture’s entrenched deprecation and outlook of men in their “toxic masculinity,” Dr. Calvert will be speaking to us on the theme and topic of The Mature Man in Christ. Please note the registration and payment links toward the end of the email after you review the information below. The cost for the retreat is $125. The amount includes your room (double occupancy), two meals at the dining facilities, and use of the conference room. The accommodations are generally very comfortable, hotel-style rooms. I have tried to primarily secure rooms on the lower level for ease of access. Are you wanting to attend but unable to fit the cost into your budget? Please contact us (email below) so we can help! Check-in time for the retreat will be at 4:00pm Friday, March 31st. We anticipate concluding the retreat by 11:45 Saturday morning. Dinner will be served at 6:00 on Friday evening while breakfast will be served at 7:30 Saturday morning. A detailed schedule of the weekend will be forthcoming as we get closer to the event!

Would you like to enjoy some golf with other men at Guntersville State Park prior to the retreat? Joey McCool will be organizing a golf fellowship early Friday afternoon. While no book is required, John Stott’s commentary on Ephesians (The Bible Speaks Today Series) will be a helpful companion. The study runs from 11:30 to 12:30 each Friday.

SERMON PREVIEW:

My Beloved Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

In Luke 11 we encounter an interesting transaction between Jesus and His disciples, and particularly one disciple that is not identified in the text. This unnamed follower of Jesus says, “Lord, teach us to pray” (11:1). In response, our Lord gives an informative and encouraging discourse to His disciples on prayer, which is recorded for us in verses 2-13.

Among the things that Jesus said in reply to the request, we find Luke’s version of ‘The Lord’s Prayer,’ which is worded somewhat differently than we discover in Matthew 6. Not only is this version of the prayer different, the setting of the prayer is also distinct from that found in Matthew.

Over the next few weeks, we will walk together through Luke 11:1-13 in our Sunday morning messages. As we do so, we will have before us the theme of ‘Praying With Jesus.’

If you’ve ever been frustrated with prayer, frequently discouraged, often struggling, or even inconsistent in praying at all, then there is abundant help from our Savior Himself!

This Sunday we will look carefully at verse 1, and we will probe the prayer life of Jesus as we get stated on our journey. I can’t wait to open God’s Word with you!

SERMON PREVIEW:
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

‘The Parable of the Good Samaritan.’

This parable told by Jesus, and found Luke’s Gospel, has been described as “one of the Gospel’s most beautiful parables.” Of course, we all know it by its popular title as mentioned above. But if I could venture to be so bold, I’d like to offer another title. Perhaps we should call it, ‘A Parable for All Those Who Are Seeking to Justify Themselves Before God.’

I suggest this because of what we learn in Luke 10:29.

We discover here what it was that initially triggered the telling of this beloved story to an inquisitive and testy Biblical scholar (Luke 10:25-29). This “lawyer” was the whole time seeking to “justify himself” before Jesus. That is, he was essentially attempting to save himself, to commend himself before God’s perfect standard of righteousness, and to earn his way into “eternal life” (v. 25).

Our Lord’s reply to this question, as we shall see, is really shocking when you think about it. The Savior tells a story. But this story, far from being just a simple (though emotionally charged!) illustration, proves to be a death blow to any attempt at self-salvation.

This coming Sunday, we will take a fresh look at this amazing parable together. And I hope that you will prayerfully reflect upon it as we prepare to gather before our great King on Sunday.

RUF Snacks:

This Sunday (Feb 12) is “Sign-Up” day for snacks for RUF (Reformed University Fellowship)/UAH large group meeting. These college students LOVE home baked cookies (actually anything!!), Other suggested items will be on the sign up sheet in the narthex near the RUF/UAH logo sign. The snacks should be brought to church on Sunday, February 19th, and left near the sign up table. They will be delivered to the campus on Monday evening February 20th.

Additionally, please pray for the young men and women who attend the RUF large group meeting. Many hearts are turned to the Lord during these sessions.

SERMON PREVIEW:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Of all the parables our Lord taught during His earthly ministry, what is your favorite?

I would venture a guess that many (if not most) of us would list the ‘Parable of the Good Samaritan’ as number one. It seems that this beloved parable has a universal appeal that far exceeds the boundaries of those of us who have saving faith in Christ. Reference to this story is made (in one way or another) in all segments of our society, from politics, to education, to entertainment, and even in the world of sports! Yet, as you might already suspect, this beloved parable is frequently treated like the proverbial ‘wax nose’ as it is shaped and twisted in all manner of ways in order to suit the various agendas that are operative in our world.

But have you ever really considered why Jesus told it, and what it was actually meant to demonstrate?

This Lord’s Day, we will probe the words of Luke 10:25-29. This is the passage that immediately precedes the story of the ‘Good Samaritan.’ It gives us a glimpse into an encounter Jesus had with a “lawyer,” and a ‘testy’ one at that! It is here, however, in the midst of this tense encounter, that we find the true intent of our Lord’s most famous parable!

Children’s Ministry: I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas season and are ready to tackle a new year. We have been extremely blessed by so many of you who have volunteered in our church nurseries this past year. From the bottom of my heart, thank you! We are continuing to staff our nurseries with volunteers and we ask that any woman or teenage lady consider signing up for one or two Sundays each quarter. If you have never served before and have reservations or questions, please reach out to me. Men’s Ministry:

Men’s Retreat (Save the Date)

Please save the date for our Spring men’s retreat March 31st/April 1st. The retreat will be on Friday night and Saturday morning at Guntersville State Park. Dr. Calvert will be providing the teaching for the weekend. This is a great opportunity to fellowship with other men from our church. Please mark your calendars for the event! Further details will be forthcoming.

Culinary Fellowship

We look forward to a men’s food and fellowship evening together towards the end of April or early May! This is a great event to simply meet other men from the church and enjoy some amazing food!

Friday Bible Study

Our men’s Friday Bible study runs Friday, January 13th through Friday, April 28th. Mike will be teaching on the book of Ephesians. While no book is required, John Stott’s commentary on Ephesians (The Bible Speaks Today Series) will be a helpful companion. The study runs from 11:30 to 12:30 each Friday.

Tuesday Bible Study

Career Group: Sunday evening Bible study & fellowship meets at the home of Jim and Sharon Daughtry, 5726 Jones Valley Drive each Sunday at 5:30 PM.
