    SERMON PREVIEW:

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
This Sunday we will be continuing our messages on ‘Learning to Pray With Jesus’ from Luke 11:1-4.  So far, we’ve discovered that our prayers are to be lifted to our “Father,” seeking the sanctification of His “name,” and the coming of His “kingdom.”
But now we arrive at what is the third petition in this model prayer, and it has to do with “bread.”  With this third request, we now turn our attention from heaven to our own lives and needs here on earth.  According to our Lord, it is “our daily bread” that we need, and that we must persistently seek from our Heavenly Father.
So what is this “bread”? And does anybody really need it?  Aren’t our cupboards already filled with “bread” and all the other food we need?  Is there really any connection to our modern lives and this seemingly unnecessary and outdated request?
Well, as you might suspect, there is indeed a very big connection to our lives, even in such an affluent culture as ours.  It is, for sure, a prayer that all disciples of Jesus must pray, no matter how much “bread” they may already have!
I can’t wait to see you this Sunday!
All my love and prayers, always,
    Mike

    SERMON PREVIEW:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Let’s do a quick thought experiment.  How many different human ‘kingdoms’ can you name?
As you consider your answer, you first need to determine what a ‘kingdom’ is.  Then you need to recognize that they come in all shapes and sizes.
If we define a human ‘kingdom’ as someone’s domain, or sphere of authority, or place of rule, then the potential number of ‘kingdoms’ in the world increases by orders of magnitude!
There are the big ones like nations, tribes, continents, and territories.  There are the smaller ones like neighborhoods, offices, schools and corporations.  And this is not to mention those that are even smaller, such as homes and families, affinity groups and clubs, even personal friendships.  There is always someone seeking to be the one in charge!  It’s just natural.  As the song goes, “Everybody wants to rule the world”!
Well, into this incalculable morass of human kingdoms big and small, Jesus taught His disciples to pray, “Father . . . Your kingdom come” (Luke 11:2).  If we are reading Scriptures correctly, then the conclusion seems obvious:  There are really just two ‘kingdoms’ in this whole universe:  ours and our Father’s!
In the one, our ‘kingdoms’ big and small, we find the multitudinous earthly places of human rule, but also those of the unseen realm of evil forces, guided and empowered by the devil himself.  After all, humanity is fallen. And this means that every human kingdom is polluted with the noxious stench of sin, and, according to the Apostle John, has been captured and enslaved by “the evil one” (1 John 5:19).  All of these supposed ‘kingdoms’ will one day come crashing down under the righteous judgment of God!
In the other ‘kingdom,’ our Father’s “kingdom,” there is the reign of the Real King.  His rule is eternal, holy, unequalled, and glorious!  The splendor and power of this greatest of domains cannot be captured by human thoughts or language!  It is the “Kingdom of God,” the “Kingdom of Heaven,” of which Jesus spoke so frequently.
This Lord’s Day, we will listen as Jesus teaches us to pray that this great “kingdom” will “come”!
I can’t wait to worship the King with you!
    All my love, always,
    Mike

    SERMON PREVIEW:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
Over the last few weeks we’ve been watching and listening as Jesus teaches us how to pray.  Our focal Scripture passage for our Sunday messages has been Luke 11:1-4 where we discover the shorter version of the ‘Lord’s Prayer.’   Whereas the prayer as found in Matthew 6 contains seven requests, the prayer as preserved by Luke contains just five.
Of course, we have noted that what we have here are two separate occasions where Jesus taught about prayer. Variation of this kind would be expected, and would naturally be related to differences in the setting and the audience.
But these differences notwithstanding, we note that both versions of this beloved prayer agree on the first petition: “Hallowed be Your name” (Luke 11:2; Mathew 6:9). While it’s true this word “hallowed” is not one we use today, we do employ the world ‘sanctify,’ and this is the essential idea inherent in the term that Jesus used in His prayer.
To get at the meaning of this request we will need to travel back in time, further still, to the days of Moses and Aaron. In Numbers 20:1-13 we find the Old Testament background of the first petition in the Lord’s Prayer, and it is not a pretty picture at all.  This chapter sets forth one of the darkest days in the history of the covenant people. Yet, it will prove most instructive in grasping what our Lord Jesus was teaching us about prayer in Luke 11.
As you prepare for worship this Sunday, be sure to read Numbers 20:1-13 as you reflect upon Luke 11:2.
I hope to see you all as we gather this week before our great Lord and Savior!
    All my love,
    Mike

    SERMON PREVIEW:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
According to our Lord Jesus, those of us who are His disciples must always begin our prayers this way: “When you pray, say; Father” (Luke 11:2).  That is, the very first word to flow from our hearts and our mouths when we pray should be the simple designation “Father.”
You will remember that we are currently walking through Luke’s version of ‘The Lord’s Prayer,’ which was likely spoken by Jesus on a different occasion than the version of the prayer that we find in Matthew 6:9-13.  While there are some differences in the two versions (Luke’s is shorter, for example), both begin the same way.  In Matthew 6:9 Jesus says, “Pray, then, in this way: Our Father.”
What should we make of this word “Father”?
I would imagine that just the mere mention of this term brings to mind many thoughts, memories, and emotions.  We, understandably so, think immediately of our own fathers. For some, this is a most pleasant exercise.  For others, it is disturbing and disappointing.  We’ve all had different experiences with our fathers.
But when Jesus uses this term to speak of the One we are to address in our prayers, His intention is not that we think of our earthly fathers.  Rather, we are to think of the very first “Father,” our eternal God Himself, who graciously bids us to seek Him out in our prayers.
Packed into this word “Father” is a veritable goldmine of truth, and deeply comforting truth at that!  And on Sunday we will descend into that blessed mine and extract the infinite treasures of the magnificent Fatherhood of our gracious God.  I can’t wait to open the Word with you!
    Time Change Saturday Night
Don’t forget, it’s that awful time of year again. We have to set our clocks forward one hour on Saturday night.
I love you all with all of my heart!
    Mike

    SERMON PREVIEW:

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Let me first say how very thankful I am for Dr. Matthew Elliott, who stepped in at the last minute to preach for us this past Sunday after I tested positive for COVID.  Thank you brother!!
As Carol and I are still testing positive for the virus, the Session has invited Rev. Adam Venable to preach for us this coming Sunday in my absence.
Adam is the founding pastor of the Southside Mission, a PCA mission Church that is being planted south of town by our Presbytery.  You might remember that a couple of weeks ago, we prayed specifically for Adam and the mission in our prayer time during worship.  The Session is anxious for you to get to know him and his family better, and to support him in your prayers as he serves the Lord.  Please lift him up before our Father as he comes to deliver the Word to us this week, and especially remember the congregation of believers that are meeting each week under his leadership.
Being sick surely isn’t fun. But what’s much worse is being away from each of you, whom I love and cherish so dearly!   Thank you for your kind and faithful prayers on our behalf, and we anxiously look forward, the Lord willing, to seeing you very soon!
A New Adult Sunday School Class Begins This Week!
This Sunday, the Adults will begin a study we are calling ‘Life in the Body.’  We will be examining what the Scriptures tell us about the nature of the Church, which is the body of Christ.  Our lessons will be based primarily upon The Communion of Saints: Living in Fellowship with the People of God, by Dr. Philip G. Ryken (P&R Publishing, 2001).   Topics will include our union with Christ, membership in the body, Spiritual gifts, loving and serving others, and more.  I hope you will join us for this study at 9:15 AM each Lord’s Day.
I love you all so very much,
    Mike

    Cost and Accommodations
The cost for the retreat is $125. The amount includes your room (double occupancy), two meals at the dinning facilities, and use of the conference room. The accommodations are generally very comfortable, hotel-style rooms. I have tried to primarily secure rooms on the lower level for ease of access. Are you wanting to attend but unable to fit the cost into your budget? Please contact us (email below) so we can help!
    Schedule
Check-in time for the retreat will be at 4:00pm Friday, March 31st. We anticipate concluding the retreat by 11:45 Saturday morning. Dinner will be served at 6:00 on Friday evening while breakfast will be served at 7:30 Saturday morning. A detailed schedule of the weekend will be forthcoming as we get closer to the event!
