Month: April 2023

  • Announcements – April 28, 2023

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
In that blessed prayer our Savior taught us to pray, one of the requests seems to be conditional.  In Matthew’s version of the Lord’s Prayer the condition is more explicit than in Luke’s account.
    Note Matthew 6:12 . . .
and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.”
Then observe what Jesus adds to this in verses 14-15 . . .
For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”
Luke’s account of the prayer is shorter at this point, for in 11:4 Jesus simply adds,
for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.”
The conditional nature of this petition has sparked many debates among the experts as to its meaning.  On first observation, it would seem to indicate that our being forgiven by God is grounded upon our having forgiven others for their sins against us.  However, as we will see on Sunday, there are some very good reasons for not reading the prayer this way.   So what, then, is the connection between our experience of God’s forgiveness and our granting forgiveness to others?
What a great joy it will be to open our Father’s Word together this Lord’s Day!
I love you all so very much!
    Mike

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The fourth petition in the Lord’s Prayer, as recorded by Luke, is that our Father might “forgive us our sins” (Luke 11:4). This request is actually composed of two parts.  The first is that we might be forgiven. The second is that we might extend this forgiveness to others.
This coming Lord’s Day, we will look carefully at the first part of this model prayer.  As you examine it, you might have a few of questions springing into your mind. Why do we need to pray this prayer if we are already forgiven by God?  Haven’t all of our sins already been atoned for once-and-for-all on the cross of Christ?  Does our ongoing forgiveness require confession of our sins, many which we may not even be aware of?
As we probe this part of Holy Scripture, we will be taken deep into the glorious wonder and power of our Lord’s cross and the depth of His love. We will also discover the ‘secret’ to finding fresh joy and assurance each day as we serve our great King and High Priest!
I can’t wait to see you on Sunday!
    All my love, always,
    Mike

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This coming Lord’s Day, Dr. Mathew Elliott will be preaching for us. His message will be taken from 1 Peter 1:3-5, and is entitled ‘A Hope That Will Not Disappoint.’  Please prayerfully reflect upon this wonderful and comforting passage of Scripture, and be sure to lift Matthew to our Lord as he delivers God’s Word to us.
And I also want to thank you for your prayers as I travel to Mississippi today to lead a weekend Bible conference at First Presbyterian Church, Louisville (this is the home Church of Joey McCool, and his father, Charlie, is a Ruling Elder there).  Please pray for this dear sister PCA congregation, and for their Pastor, Elders, and Deacons.

    Friday April 7, 2023
Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Tonight we will gather at 6:00 PM for our annual Good Friday Service of Worship.
Everyone is encouraged to join us, and please be sure to invite your family, friends, and neighbors as well. We will read God’s Word together, and sing the hymns of the faith that speak of that first Good Friday, when our Lord and Savor died for our sins.
Our Good Friday message will come from Revelation 20:14, and is entitled, “The Death of Death: Jesus Died for Me.”
Then on Easter Morning, following Sunday School, we will come together on the Lord’s Day to celebrate the truth of the bodily resurrection of Jesus!
Our sermon will be taken from Luke 24:36-43, which details one of the post-resurrection appearances of Jesus.
I look forward to seeing you all tonight, and may our Lord bless you richly on this special day!
