Month: February 2024

  • Announcements – February 23, 2024

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Beginning this week, we will be offering a new Adult Sunday School Class on the Ten Commandments.  Our focus will be upon what is commonly called the ‘Second Table’ of the Law, those commandments that address our relationships to others.  We will be assisted in our study by the practical exposition of the Ten Commandments found in our Confessional Standards, most notably, the Westminster Larger Catechism.   Let me encourage you to begin preparing for our class by getting familiar with Larger Catechism questions 122-148.
Our Session would like to announce to you that on Sunday March 24, immediately after our Worship, we will have Officer Elections.  As you will remember, Officer Nominations for Ruling Elder and Deacon were held in late 2022.  Then, throughout 2023 the men nominated to these two Offices (and willing to serve if elected) were trained according to the plan set forth in our Book of Church Order. Having completed their year-long program of study, these seven men are now ready to be presented to you by the Session for election by the Congregation.  The Officer candidates are:
For the Office of Ruling Elder:
    Jeff Brown
    John Dragash
    Paul Matheny
    Jon Swanner
    For the Office of Deacon:
    Kirk Bailey
    Blake Jenkins
    John Patton
If these candidates are elected by the Congregation, the active Session will consist of eight men; seven Ruling Elders and one Teaching Elder. The active Diaconate will consist of ten men.  Please be in prayer for these brothers and their families, and for our Father’s will to be done in their lives and in His Church.
Finally, I am so thankful that my dear brother Dr. Matthew Elliott will be stepping into the pulpit for me this Sunday.  I have been dealing with a sickness for most of the week and my normal preparations for the sermon have been hindered.  Matthew will lead our worship and will be preaching from 1 Timothy 1:15-17, which contains one of the Apostle Paul’s famous ‘trustworthy sayings.’  I look forward to hearing this message and leading in our observance of the Lord’s Supper.  Please be in prayer for Matthew as he brings us God’s Word.
I love you all so very much,
    Mike

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
As we gather for worship this coming Sunday, we will continue our new series of messages from the prophecy of Ezekiel.  Our focal passage for the sermon will be Ezekiel 1:4 where we learn of the prophet’s experience of the presence of the Lord in the form of “a stormy wind out of the north,” a heavenly hurricane.
This dramatic encounter with God, known as a ‘theophany,’ occurred in association with the massive shift that took place in Ezekiel’s life.  Though he was in the midst of his training to be a priest, the Lord had other plans for the young son of Buzi.  He would now be a prophet of God!
However, before he could become that special messenger of the Lord, he had to get to know Israel’s God more completely.  It would be in the arrival of the desert hurricane that the young prophet would discover the sovereignty and holiness of the God for whom he would serve as spokesman.
As we continue to study this prophetic book together in the weeks to come, let me suggest the following outline for your reading and preparation (our future sermons will follow this structure):
1:5-14–The vision of the living creatures
    1:15-21–The vision of the wheels
1:22-28–The vision of the glorious throne
    2:1-10–The prophet’s call clarified
Before I go, let me express my gratitude to Dr. Matthew Elliott who preached in my absence last Sunday while I was participating in a missions conference at Grace Fellowship Church in Albertville.  I know you were richly blessed by his message!
I love you all so very much,
    Mike

    Brothers and Sisters,
As you prepare for Sunday morning, reflect over the things that you believe are the most stable things in your life. What is it that you can count on each day when you wake up? What are the things that you assume will always be the way they are right now? Is it certain people and relationships? Is it some material thing? A certain situation?
This Sunday we will consider but one verse from the book of Hebrews. It is short, but vast. In Hebrews 13:8, the author will tell us that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” We will dissect the pieces of this verse and hopefully gain a greater sense of how our unchanging Savior encourages us in an ever-changing world.
We look forward to see you all then,
    Matthew K Elliott

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
If you’ve ever read though the entirety of the Old Testament, then you’ve encountered what is, arguably, the most bizarre and perplexing book of the Old Covenant Scriptures.   We know the book by way of the author’s name, a Hebrew name meaning “God strengthens.”  It is a prophetic book, one of the five major prophetic books of the Old Testament.
According to many readers, the book appears to be the work of man who has disconnected himself from reality.  The things he says, the events he claims to have seen and heard first hand, and the actions he engages in are unlike any other prophet before or since.  The general opinion of critical scholars from the liberal tradition is that the author of this prophecy was clearly demented, perhaps suffering from some form of extreme mental illness, or enduring the effects of a significant personality disorder at the least.  Indeed, any honest assessment of the man and his book must account for the obvious ‘uniqueness’ of what he has written.
For Christians like us, we also have to grapple with what we find here.  We must raise the question as to why such a book falls within the Biblical canon, and why we must view it through the lens provided for us by the Apostle Paul, who said “all Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable” (2 Tim 3:16).  The “all” in Paul’s second letter to Timothy certainly included this strange Old Testament book as well.
Ezekiel. That’s his name.  And his prophecy, composed of forty-eight lengthy chapters, is one that we’d really like to avoid if possible.  Aside from two chapters (37-38), most of us know relatively little about its contents, and even less about its initial purpose in Israelite history and its abiding significance for us as New Testament saints.   But here it is in our Bibles, tucked in between Lamentations and Daniel.
I bring all of this to your attention because this Sunday, the Lord willing, we will begin a series of sermons from this prophecy.  Now, fear not, for I’m not suggesting that we will engage in a years-long series of messages from Ezekiel.  While that would be profitable, if not most daunting, my purpose in this series is less ambitious.  My aim is to expose us to the bigger (and breathtaking!) picture that Ezekiel paints for us, one that has implications for all of creation.  Our initial messages will come from the first three chapters.
This coming Lord’s day we will begin with a first look at Ezekiel 1:1-3.  As you prepare for these messages, let me encourage you to start reading through the book, perhaps assisted along the way by a good commentary or study guide (see the links below for my suggestions).  And let us pray fervently together that our awesome God, whom we will encounter afresh in this book, will speak to us with life-changing power!
I love you all so very much!
    Mike
