Month: March 2024

  • Announcements – March 29, 2024

May the Lord bless you all on this beautiful Good Friday!
At 6:00 PM tonight, we will gather together for our annual Good Friday Service of Worship. We will reflect upon the events that took place on this day two-thousand years ago in the city of Jerusalem where our Lord and Savior freely gave His life upon the cross for our sins.  Following our tradition, we will read Scripture, pray, sing, and hear the proclamation of God’s Word regarding the necessity and purpose for the death of the sinless Son of God.
Tonight’s brief message is entitled, ‘The Language of the Cross: A Meditation On the Words of Jesus.’  We will consider several Scripture passages from Matthew’s Gospel in which we find the very words of Jesus that tell us the true meaning of His death.
Then, on Easter morning, we will gather together once again to worship our risen Lord and King.  Our sermon will come from Luke 24:13-35 and is entitled, ‘The Amazing Thing That Happened On the Way to Emmaus.’  This, of course, is the post resurrection appearance of Jesus that we discover only in Luke’s Gospel.
Let me also report on our Officer Election that was held last Sunday.  Each of the seven candidates were resoundingly elected to their respective offices by the congregation.  On Sunday April 14 we will ordain and install these brothers during our worship service.  Please pray for them and their families as they take up their duties in service of the Lord and His Church.
I look forward to seeing you tonight and again on Resurrection Day!
All my love to each of you,
    Mike

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
Before I introduce our sermon for this coming Lord’s Day, let me remind you that there will be a brief Called Meeting of the Congregation immediately after worship for the purpose of voting on our slate of Church Officer Candidates.  The Session joyfully recommends to you that the following men be elected to Church Office:
For Ruling Elder:  Jeff Brown, John Dragash, Paul Matheny, and Jon Swanner.
For Deacon:  Kirk Bailey, Blake Jenkins, and John Patton.
The vote will be by ballot, and (as our Book of Church Order specifies) only Communing Members of CPC who are present may vote.
Thank you so much for your faithful prayers and participation as we seek to know and to do our Father’s will.
Our sermon for this week will come from Ezekiel 1:28, and our theme will be the worship of God.  Ezekiel’s immediate reaction to beholding “the glory of the Lord” is very instructive for us as we contemplate this great theme.
But what does it mean to worship the Lord? How should we worship Him? And what should move us to worship our Lord?
Well, believe it or not, the exiled Old Testament prophet of God who lived and preached so long ago has much to teach us about Christian worship today!
I love you all with all my heart!
    Mike

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
For the last several weeks, we have been carefully considering the amazing and brilliant vision of the Lord’s throne as described by Ezekiel.  We’ve tried to imagine the heavenly storm, the four living creatures, and the interlocking wheels of the chariot-throne upon which one “with a human appearance” is seated (1:26).  As we arrive at verse 28, Ezekiel finally tells in very plain and simple language what the vision was really all about: “Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord.”
That word “glory” is obviously a word we encounter frequently in Scripture, and it certainly seems to be central to the Gospel message itself.  In fact, as theologian Dr. Christopher Morgan has observed, “The glory of God is interwoven throughout the Biblical story and forms the origin, content, and goal of the entire cosmic narrative.”
But what is “glory,” and more specifically, the “glory of the Lord”?
Well, if we stay tuned-in to the message of Ezekiel, the answer we seek will surely become clear.  And if Ezekiel’s reaction to this vision the divine glory is any clue (“I fell on my face”), then we are in for a blessed shock for sure!
What a great joy it will be to worship our glorious Lord together this Sunday!
I love you all so very much,
    Mike

  • Announcements – March 8, 2024

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
Before we all forget, let me remind you that this Saturday night we set our clocks forward one hour. Spring is on the way, and with it comes the day when ‘Spring Forward.’
On Sunday, our study of Ezekiel chapter one will continue as we consider verses 26-28.  We will take the first of two looks at this section of Scripture where the prophet describes (as best he can) what he sees as his gaze drifts skyward to what is above the cherubim. As we will learn, this astonishing vision concludes in a most dramatic way as Ezekiel collapses under the weight of what he has encountered there in Babylon (“I fell on my face,” v. 28).
This Lord’s Day, we will focus upon the “throne” the prophet sees, and the One in “human” form who is seated there above the clouds.  Who could this be?  What does this scene tell us about the God who has delivered us?
May our Father bless you all with rest and peace this weekend, and I look forward to seeing you on Sunday morning!
    All my love,
    Mike

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
What did the prophet Ezekiel see there in the ancient city of Babylon in the year 593 BC?
Well, from our previous studies in this great book of prophecy we’ve learned that he encountered a massive desert storm (1:4), four living creatures (1:5-14), and wheels within wheels (1:15-21). As you would suspect, all of this has sparked not only great fascination with the Book of Ezekiel, but also much wild speculation as to the identity and meaning of these images.
Even more significant for contemporary readers like us is the question of the relevance of such a strange vision.  We naturally want to know how the experience of Ezekiel, over 2600 years ago, connects to the plan of redemption and to our lives as the New Covenant people of God.  At the risk of sounding a bit pedantic, we might well ask, is there anything in this bizarre vision that helps, strengthens, and encourages us to live more faithfully for Christ today in our modern world?
Well, of course, the answer is a resounding ‘Yes’!
This coming Lord’s Day we are going to take a very close look at the visions of the Heavenly Creatures (vv. 5-14), and the Heavenly Wheels (vv. 15-21).  And what we will discover as we do will be life-changing, guaranteed!
I love you all so much, always!
    Mike
