My Dear Family in Christ Jesus,
One of the most important Biblical words related to the Gospel is the word “peace.” And, as you know, this word is also front and center on the minds of virtually everyone alive on this earth.  I can make such a wide and comprehensive claim because this is exactly what all humanity lost in the Garden of Eden.
In the fall of Adam, we all became hopelessly bereft of peace with our Creator, peace among ourselves as image-bearers, and even peace with the creation itself. No wonder our world looks like it does. No wonder the human soul is terminally restless!
However, long ago the prophet Ezekiel introduced a divine promise that would deal directly with the absence of this peace.  In Ezekiel 34:25-31, our sermon text for this coming Lord’s Day, we read of God’s eternal plan to address this most basic spiritual need. The prophet writes of a “covenant of peace” that God Himself will execute, and He will do so unilaterally and unconditionally. It will in every way be a ‘new covenant,’ unprecedented, unanticipated, and unbelievably amazing!
As we will discover, this new “covenant of peace” will come to fallen sinners by way of a great Shepherd-King named “David.”   Even though king David of Israel had been dead for over 400 years, Ezekiel has promised that another ‘David’ shall arise, a greater ‘David,’ who alone will deliver eternal peace to all those without it who simply repent and place their faith in Him.
I can’t wait to explore this great promise with each of you on Sunday!
    I love you all,
    Mike

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
One of the most important titles that our Savior gave Himself is that of “the good shepherd.”  We find this most comforting designation set forth in John 10:11– “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” Perhaps there is no other image of our Savior more blessed than this one!  But have you ever wondered why Jesus used that tender symbol to picture His relationship to us who belong to Him? Well, the answer may surprise you!
This is where Sunday’s sermon passage from Ezekiel comes into play.  In Ezekiel 34:11-16, the Lord makes a promise to the captive Israelites that the prophet Ezekiel is to proclaim to them there in Babylon.  The opening words of this promise say it all:
For thus says the Lord God: Behold, I, I myself will search for my sheep and will seek them out. As a shepherd seeks out his flock when he is among his sheep that have been scattered, so will I seek out my sheep, and I will rescue them from all places where they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness” (vv. 11-12).
This is surely the Old Testament passage that Jesus had in mind when He called Himself the “good shepherd.”
On Sunday, we will explore this Old Testament prophecy further, and we will see even more of the glory and power of the One who is our great and good Shepherd!
Also on Sunday, it will be our delight to receive a report from one of our PCA missionaries.  Adair Evans is a missionary to Germany, and she will be with us this Lord’s Day to share with us more about God’s work in that country. You will have an opportunity to meet her before and after Sunday School, and after our morning worship as well.  Please pray for her as she comes to be with us.
I love you all so much!
    Mike

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
As we gather for worship this coming Lord’s Day, our message from the great prophecy of Ezekiel will come from Ezekiel 20:1-44 (with special focus upon 20:39-44).
If you take some time to read though this lengthy passage you will discover that the prophet of God moves the captive Israelites into the Lord’s courtroom.  This section of the prophecy has been described as a ‘prosecution speech,’ or as an ‘arraignment’ of both the “elders” of Israel who were in captivity at that time (v. 1), and the whole nation of the covenant people in every period of their existence (vv. 4-39).
With the very words of Yahweh in his mouth, Ezekiel sets forth the sordid history of the covenant people upon the framework of four historical epochs: 1) their beginnings in Egypt, 2) the exodus of the first generation of Israelites under Moses, 3) the time of the second generation of Israelites following the rebellion in the wilderness, and 4) the period between the conquest of the promised land and their current status as exiles in Babylon.
Our message will investigate this prosecutorial sermon, and we will see what such a recounting of Israel’s sad history has to teach us today as we seek to follow and serve our Lord and King.  Perhaps in a surprising fashion, we will see that there is great value in deliberately not forgetting our past!
I love you all, with all my heart!
    Mike

    Dear CPC Members,
We are thankful for our senior pastor and an opportunity for him and his family to spend a few days away. I am also thankful for an opportunity to teach this Sunday from the pulpit! Please pray for our worship as well as our teaching that it may be God-glorifying and edifying to the body.
Our sermon this Sunday morning will center around the last handful of verses in the first book of the Bible, Genesis 50:22-26. Joseph will make an odd request to his kinsmen as they live in Egypt: “Take my bones up from here.” We will examine the theme of pilgrim faith and how Joseph’s request encourages and exhorts us on this side of the cross.
I look forward to seeing you all this coming Sunday morning.

    Matthew K Elliott
