Month: November 2024

  • Announcements – November 27, 2024

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
On this Wednesday before Thanksgiving Day, I wanted to introduce our 2024 Advent sermons and our text for this coming Lord’s Day Worship.
This year I will be preaching a series of messages that I have entitled, ‘The Hymns of Christmas.’   The title comes from some of the wonderful Advent hymns that are found in our Trinity Hymnal. However, I have chosen from among those hymns that are least familiar to us.
As you know, the great hymns of the Church have typically been based upon a specific text of Holy Scripture.  The editors of our Trinity Hymnal have also been very careful to pair each of the 742 hymns with a Scripture reference (you will find the Biblical text listed just after the title of each hymn).
Our Advent sermons for each of the next four Sundays, including our Christmas Eve service, will come from the Biblical text associated with five unfamiliar Christmas hymns.  The plan is as follows:
First Sunday of Advent, December 1
Hymn: #221, ‘Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming’
    Text: Isaiah 11:1-5
Second Sunday of Advent, December 8
Hymn #197, ‘Comfort, Comfort Ye My People’
    Text: Isaiah 40:1-2
Third Sunday of Advent, December 15
Hymn: #230, ‘Thou Who Wast Rich Beyond All Splendor’
    Text: 2 Corinthians 8:9
Fourth Sunday of Advent, December 22
Hymn: #212, ‘Within a Crib My Savior Lay’
    Text: 1 John 4:10
Then on Christmas Eve, Tuesday December 24
Hymn: #227, ‘On Christmas Night All Christians Sing’
    Text: Luke 2:10
In order to gain the most from our messages, let me suggest a couple of things you might want to do beginning this week.
First, use the link below to access the free online version of the Trinity Hymnal.  Then before each Sunday of Advent, use the hymn and its Biblical text as your devotional guide for the week.  Read the Biblical passage very carefully, then prayerfully reflect upon the meaning of each stanza of the hymn.
Secondly, each Sunday during our time of Preparation for Worship, Dr. Carol Bart will be playing the Advent Hymn we have assigned for each message. As she plays, open the hymnal to that song and follow along with the music silently in your heart as we ready ourselves for worship.
I hope you all have a most wonderful Thanksgiving Day, and I can’t wait to explore the glory of our Savior’s incarnation with each of you beginning this Sunday morning!
I love you all with all my heart and soul,

    Mike

    Beloved Ones in the Lord,
Whenever you purchase something brand new, it might be a watch, a microwave, or an automobile, the ‘newness’ of it not only relates to its recent construction in the factory, but also to its new features.  It is these advanced capabilities that make it both better and newer than the old item that you have replaced.
For the last few weeks we have been carefully examining the ‘features’ of what the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah called “the new covenant,” and what the prophet Ezekiel has also identified as “the covenant of peace.”  This brand new covenantal plan, unilateral and unconditional in nature, finds its grand fulfillment in the ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Divine Shepherd-King, who has redeemed (and is even now redeeming) His lost sheep by means of His bloody cross and empty tomb.
In Ezekiel 36:24-28, the new and superior ‘features’ of this covenant are laid out in a beautiful catalog of God’s sovereign mercy and grace:
One: He will regather scattered and captive Israel and bring her back home.
Two: He will cleanse away the deep stains of Israel’s many transgressions.
Three: He will grant the regathered and cleansed people a new heart and spirit.
Four: He will place His very own Holy Spirit within each of them.
Five: He will prompt and empower their glad obedience to His will.
Six: And finally, He will make them “My people” for all eternity, and they will live in the land originally promised to Abraham and his descendants forever.
This coming Sunday, we will look carefully at that fourth amazing feature of the “new covenant,” and its corresponding result, which is made clear in the fifth new element. We find these set out for us in verse 27:
“And I will put My Spirit within you and bring it about that you walk in My statutes, and are careful and follow My ordinances.”
What an unthinkable promise, that the Spirit of the holy, transcendent, and all-glorious eternal God would reside in each of us!  Such thought is too wonderful indeed!
I love you all so dearly, and I hope to see you this Lord’s Day!
    Mike

  • Announcements – November 15, 2024

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
For the last couple of weeks, our Sunday sermons have been on the “new covenant” that both Ezekiel and Jeremiah preached and wrote about as instructed and inspired by the Lord.
This is the final and ultimate covenant that God has made with sinners. The “new covenant” is the one that brings the promise that God had made long ago to Abraham to its most glorious consummation in our Lord Jesus Christ.
You will remember that this amazing covenant, like that one made by God to king David, is unilateral, unfailing, and unconditional. The promise of the permanent possession of the land of Canaan made to Abraham, and the promise of an eternal kingdom overseen by a new Davidic king made to David, were Old Testament types and shadows of something much, much greater!  The New Testament makes it abundantly clear that these promises were given in anticipation of all that God the Father would do for sinners through His Only-Begotten Son!
We have identified six blessings of the “new covenant” which Ezekiel has set forth in Ezekiel 36:24-38.  Last Sunday we examined the first of these, and this coming Lord’s Day we will address the second and third blessings that we find in verses 25-26.
To whet your spiritual appetites, we might suggest that these next two blessings have to do with an antiseptic and a heart transplant.  I look forward eagerly to opening the Word of our Father together with each of you on Sunday!
You are my joy in Christ,
    Mike

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
Through our recent Sunday morning messages from the Book of Ezekiel, we have learned that the Lord promised the captive Israelites that He Himself would execute what we have come to know as a ‘new covenant.’  This very name for the covenant comes from Ezekiel’s fellow prophet Jeremiah, who was preaching in the city of Jerusalem during the time of Ezekiel’s exile in Babylon. In Jeremiah 31:31 he declares,
Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah.”
In Ezekiel 36:22-38 we find Ezekiel’s version of this same “new covenant.”
The catalog of the blessings promised to Israel in association with this new act of God on their behalf is truly amazing.  You will see in verse 24 that the very first of these blessed benefits is the fact that the Lord will regather His captive people, and place them back in their “own land.”  This promise is stated again in verse 28.
As we consider this special covenant, now removed from Ezekiel’s time by over 2600 years, we wonder how this promise is to be fulfilled.  Does this mean that, ultimately, the Israelite people, the ethnic Jews, are guaranteed to live in the actual land of Israel forever?  Or, is there something even bigger and better being promised that will encompass all nations and far exceed the boundaries of the Holy Land?  Even more so, we want to know how such a divine promise of a perpetual homeland for ancient Israel is good news to us today.  What does land have to do with the Gospel and our story of redemption in Christ our Lord?
What a privilege it will be to open the Word of the Lord with each of you this Sunday!
    I love you all dearly!
    Mike

    Beloved Ones in the Lord,
As we come near to the end of our series of messages on the Book of Ezekiel, we will spend the next two Sundays probing the wonderful promises contained in Ezekiel 36:22-38.  As we have suggested, this chapter presents what we have come to know as the ‘new covenant,’ the final covenant made between God and sinners, which finds its perfect expression in the saving work of our Lord Jesus.
This Sunday, our focus will be upon verses 22-23 of our text.  These verses serve as the preamble to the announcement of the eternal benefits of the new covenant, which are then outlined most gloriously in the section that follows. Then, on the final two Sundays of November, we will give our attention to Ezekiel’s prophecy of a new temple for the new covenant people of God (chapters 40-48).
Let me encourage you to read and meditate upon these passages as we prepare to hear the Lord’s Word.
A New Adult Sunday School Class Begins This Sunday
On Sunday, our Adults will begin a new Sunday School class on the subject, ‘Resting in the Sovereignty of God.’  We will base our lessons on the very helpful book by Jerry Bridges, Trusting God (NavPress, 2008). This week, I will be teaching the first two chapters of this book, which address two very important questions we have all wrestled with at one time or another: Can we trust God? Is God in control?  I look forward to seeing you all as we meet together at 9:15 AM in the Worship Center!
    Time Change This Saturday Night!
Great news!!  We get to turn the clock back one hour on Saturday night.  Don’t forget!
I love you all so much,
    Mike
