Month: April 2025

  • Announcements – April 25, 2025

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

Things are about to get very interesting in our study of the First Letter of Paul to Timothy. As we examine 1 Timothy 2:8-15 we will be probing one of the most challenged, disputed, and argued over passages in the entire New Testament!

What makes this passage so volatile is the subject matter at hand: men and women together in worship, and in the leadership of the Church.

Here, the Apostle Paul will address the roles and duties of Christian men and women (and husbands and wives) in the Church.  With the very authority of Christ Himself, Paul will explain their respective functions in both Church worship and in Church leadership and, as we will see, with implications reaching beyond the Church into the Christian marriage and family.

Our careful study of 1 Timothy 2:8-15 will take place over several weeks as we walk most prayerfully and deliberately through these inspired words. This Lord’s Day our focus will be upon the men of the Church as set forth in the first part of verse 8: “I desire then that in every place the men should pray . . . .

I love you all so much!

    Mike

    Beloved Ones in the Lord,

Today is Good Friday, the special day of the year that we reflect upon the crucifixion and death of our Lord and Savior.  As is our tradition, we will gather this evening at 6:00 PM for a special service of worship in commemoration of this most incredible event.

Our theme this year is ‘Darkness.’  Through a series of Scriptural readings from the Gospel of Luke, we will trace this Biblical theme as it marks the final days of our Savior’s earthly ministry, culminating in the giving of His life for us and our sins upon the cross.  We will also share the Lord’s Supper, and our brief message from the Table will come from the words of Luke 23:44-45.

Then on Easter Sunday, we will consider the words of the Apostle Paul found in 1 Timothy 2:5-6 as we celebrate the resurrection of the Son of God.  In this inspired passage, we are assured that, “there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.”

I look forward to seeing you tonight and then again on Resurrection Day!

I love you all so much,

    Mike

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

One of the most pressing questions facing Christians today is the very one raised by Francis Schaeffer many years ago in his book, How Then Shall We Live? The Rise and Decline of Western Thought and Culture. That title, and the profound insights gleaned from Schaeffer’s thoughtful reflections, comes to my mind when I read the words of 1 Timothy 2:1-2–

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.

While our attention is naturally drawn to the subject of prayer, the real point of these verses is to be found in the last line that tells us how we are to live, answering the question raised by Schaeffer. Paul employs four key terms to depict the Christian’s way of life in the world: “peaceful . . . quiet . . . godly . . . dignified.

I wonder, what would be the answers given to this same question if we were to poll believers from the broadly Evangelical world? I suspect we might not answer it the way Paul does. In fact, what the Apostle Paul tells Timothy here about the nature of our lives in this world is pretty shocking, particularly in view of its seeming simplicity and rather benign sound. And yet, it is the word of the inspired Apostle, and therefore the Word of the Lord.

On Sunday, we will take a good look at this passage. And, hopefully, we can figure out what Paul means by these terms and how we might conform our lives to the picture painted here for us.

Remember that next week is Easter Week. Our annual Good Friday Service of Worship will be Friday night April 18 at 6:00 PM.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

This coming Sunday will be a very special day in the life of our Church.  Once again, we will have the privilege of ordaining and installing Deacons to serve our Savior and His people.

Sunday will mark the culmination of a long process that began over a year ago with the nomination of candidates by the congregation, their program of training and preparation that took the better part of a year, and finally their election to the Office by the members of the Church.  Through this process, the Lord has set apart ten of our men who will join with our current Deacons in the sacred work of ministry to the body of Christ.

In view of this wonderful privilege, our sermon will be taken from the familiar words of Acts 6:1-7. This passage gives us the Biblical and historical foundation for the establishment of the New Testament Office of Deacon.  Please join me in concerted prayer for our service of worship this Lord’s Day, and for the proclamation of our Father’s Word.

I love you all with all my heart,

    Mike
