Month: August 2025

  • Announcements – August 22, 2025

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Each and every time we are assembled together for worship it is a most unique and wonderful occasion for praise and thanksgiving as we gaze upon our Sovereign God as He has revealed Himself to us in the Word and in our most blessed Savior. However, there are some times of worship where our collective praise is prompted by the commemoration of a special instance of the faithfulness and grace of the Lord in our present-day lives.  This Sunday will be one of those occasions.
On Sunday August 21, 2005, a small fellowship of believers, known then as the Christ Presbyterian Mission of Evangel Presbytery, gathered for worship in the auditorium of Hampton Cove Middle School. Teaching Elders Dr. Frank Barker and Rev. Ralph Keel presided over a service of particularization for the little congregation.  On that Sunday, the mission officially became Christ Presbyterian Church.  And at the conclusion of that historic service we shared our very first Communion as a free-standing congregation of the PCA.
This Lord’s Day we will be remembering our Savior’s faithfulness to us not only in the founding of the Church in 2005, but also in His sustaining grace that has preserved and protected us for twenty years.
On Sunday morning, our sermon will come from a very appropriate text, 1 Timothy 6:20. It is there that the Apostle Paul enjoins young Timothy to “guard the deposit” that has been “entrusted” to him. In our Lord’s sweet providence, there could not be a timelier passage for us to give attention to on this special day!
Then, on Sunday evening at 6:00 PM we will gather again in the worship center for the presentation of a wonderful and exciting video-history of our last twenty years together.  Following the video, there will be a twentieth anniversary fellowship on the grounds of the Church house, with lots of ice cream to make it especially delightful!  Please feel free to dress comfortably for the warm outdoors.
It will be a great Lord’s Day for sure, and I can’t wait to see you all!
    I love you dearly,
    Mike

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This coming Lord’s Day is the first of two very important, even historic, Sundays for our Church.
This coming Sunday night at 6:00 PM, we will gather together for a special service of worship in order to ordain and install Dr. Matthew Elliott as our Associate Pastor.  This is not only a most significant event in the life of CPC, but historic as well!  This special service will mark the first time we have elected, ordained, and installed a minister of the Gospel since our particularization as a Church in 2005!
During this service of worship, a Commission of Teaching and Ruling Elders from our Presbytery (Providence Presbytery) will ordain Matthew to the Gospel Ministry and officially install him as our Associate Minister.  As you remember, in the PCA the ordination of a man to the Ministry is performed by the Presbytery and not the local Church.  In Matthew’s case, by the action of the Presbytery he will be officially designated as a Teaching Elder and will then be able to perform any ministry function that a Senior Minister engages in. Please be in prayer for Matthew and the Commission as we meet together before our Lord to do His will.
Then, on Sunday evening August 24 at 6:00 PM we will gather together for a time of celebration and fellowship as we commemorate our twentieth anniversary as a Church.  We will meet in the Worship Center for the premier of a special video-history of CPC. Following this, we will share in an ice cream fellowship at the Church house.
Let me also encourage you to pick up a copy of our Fall Ministry Guide that will be available for you this Sunday in the Narthex.  In it you will find a listing of all the ministries that we will be engaged in from September through December, including information about Bible Studies, fellowships, Sunday lunches, and our next New Member Orientation Class.
Our Sermon for this Lord’s Day morning will come from 1 Timothy 6:18-19.  As you study this text in preparation for the message, you will find additional insight by looking carefully at Revelation 3:14-18.  As you compare these passages, the link between them will become obvious.
I love you all, and rejoice in our Lord and in you each day!
    Mike

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

What would you think if I told you that every true preacher of the Gospel must be a ‘prosperity preacher’?  And what if I even strengthened that claim by saying that the Lord desires that all believers would be rich, very rich?

I imagine that many of you would be frantically looking up the phone numbers of the members of our Session!  And you’d be assuming, quite understandably, that your pastor has finally lost his mind, or that he has fallen into the devilish oblivion of false doctrine!

Well, while I’m not so certain about my mental status, I am certain that what has been asserted is not false doctrine at all! I know this because of the words that the Apostle Paul set forth before Timothy and his Church in ancient Ephesus:

As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.”

As you know by now, these are the inspired words of 1 Timothy 6:17.  And you can easily see for yourself that the Apostle does, in fact, make the claim that all Christians are rich and prosperous since our God “richly provides” for us!  And not only that, those riches He is so very gracious to grant are to be enjoyed in this life, in this “present age”!

    Are you surprised by this?

Well, the Lord willing, we will look at this verse one last time this coming Sunday as we gather together for worship.  And we will learn about the prosperous and rich life that we are meant to live, that our Father guarantees by means of his graciously granted blessings, and that we are designed to enjoy.

I love you all so very much.  And you are always on my heart and in my daily prayers!

    Mike

As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches”– 1 Timothy 6:17.

My Dear Ones in the Lord Jesus,

Take a very good look at the verse above.  As you do, let your mind focus upon the words “set” and “hopes,” and also the phrase “the uncertainty of riches.”

This language, as you can recognize, is employed in the context of a prohibition delivered by the Apostle Paul to Timothy, who is then to command his wealthy Christian brethren never to locate their “hopes” upon earthly treasures.

Any worthy examination of this command necessitates that we carefully define the terms employed by Paul.  Four are most critical: “set,” “hopes,” “uncertainty,” and “riches.”  As we probe this passage on Sunday, we will be very deliberate in gaining an understanding of Paul’s language since it involves something that we, who are rich by most worldly standards, are never to do.

As you consider the personal implications of this verse, take a moment to ponder the possibility that you may have misplaced your “hopes.” And, even more, that due to this you are experiencing the unpleasant after-effects of such a move.

This Lord’s Day we will consider the meaning and the wide-ranging implications of this warning about where we rest our “hopes.”

I love you all, and can’t wait to worship our Great King with each of you!

    Mike
