    Sermon Preview

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

In the English Standard Version of the Bible, David’s name is mentioned 989 times. To put this in perspective, the name of Jesus is mentioned 1058 times. And just in case you’re curious, Abraham’s name is found 234 times, Jacob’s 361 times, Isaac’s 129 times, and Solomon’s 283 times. It’s obvious that David is a very prominent figure in the Bible.

It’s no wonder then, given David’s central place in the story of redemption, that we find such a large section of Scripture dedicated to one of the darkest periods in his ministry as the king of Israel. Almost two full chapters of Second Samuel are devoted to his sin with Bathsheba and its terrible aftermath. This would suggest that this event, as awful as it proves to be, is a central component of the Bible’s unfolding plan of redemption that finds its blessed fulfillment in our Lord Jesus Christ.

On Sunday, we will probe more deeply into this tragic season of the king’s life. And we will be especially interested to discover how we might face and find victory over our own temptations as we seek to follow our Lord.

I would encourage you to read 2 Samuel 11-12 as you prepare for Lord’s Day worship.

    Mission Report This Sunday

This Lord’s Day it will be our joy to have Franky and Alaina Garcia with us in worship. Franky, a recent graduate of Reformed Theological Seminary (in Jackson, MS), will be giving us a report on their call to plant a mission Church in Montreal.

Men’s ‘Stay at Home Retreat’ Next Friday and Saturday

I am looking forward to spending some good time with our men as we gather for our Fall Retreat next weekend, November 1 and 2. Our theme for the retreat will be, ‘ A Man Under Authority and Entrusted With Authority.’

On Friday night we will meet at the Church from 6:30 to 9:00 PM. Then on Saturday, we will gather at 8:15 AM for a catered breakfast and will conclude our retreat by 11:30 AM.

All the men of the church are encouraged to attend, and guests are most welcome!

I love you all, and look forward to gathering with you before our King this Sunday!

    In His grace,
    Mike

    Counselor’s Corner:

On occasion someone will ask me what books I might give to someone struggling with grief and loss.  This is certainly not a bad question at all.  After all, there are a myriad of resources on the issue, many of them having the potential to greatly encourage, describe expectations and provide helpful guidance in the midst of pain. Yet, it is also good for us to consider what books I ought to read as I consider helping those struggling with grief and loss.  In this post, we describe three resources that you might consider reading as you approach family and friends dealing with the pain of loss.

    Sermon Preview

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

On Sunday we will return to our long-term sermon series on the ‘Great Events in the History of Redemption.’ And more specifically, we will continue our study of the life of king David, Israel’s greatest king.

Our text will be 2 Samuel 11:1-27. And here we encounter a very dark episode in David’s life and reign as Israel’s king.

Of course, I’m referring to his sin against Bathsheba, and the horrible aftermath that ensued and eventually bought ruin to David’s family and kingdom.  And notice that I deliberately said ‘against’ Bathsheba and not ‘with’ her.  As we will see, David’s sin is often referred to as adultery, and it surely was. But, as the facts of the situation will reveal, this sin was even more complex and heinous than that!

On Sunday, we will begin our investigation of this terrible episode in David’s life. And as we do, we will learn some very valuable lessons about our own lives as followers of Christ our Lord, especially those lessons concerning temptation and sin.

New Adult Sunday School Class Starts This Week!

This Lord’s Day, we will begin a new Adult Sunday School Class on the topic of Spiritual Warfare. Sermon Preview

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

On Sunday we will complete our sermon series entitled “Fearfully and Wonderfully Made: Man In the Image of God.” And our subject will be “The Image of God Perfected.” Our focus will be upon a very familiar section of God’s Word, Romans 8:28-30. There, Paul says:

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.

This passage contains what is commonly referred to as ‘The Golden Chain of Salvation,’ for it reveals the sequence of events, brought about by God alone, that leads to our salvation in its fullest expression. You can see that it includes foreknowledge, predestination, calling, justification, and glorification. But what is most interesting is that Paul declares that all of this is linked to God’s final purpose for each of us, that of our conformity “to the image of His Son.”

We will probe the meaning of this great passage on Sunday, and see how it answers the basic question, ‘What is a human being?’

    Looking Ahead

Following our worship on Sunday, Carol and I will be departing for a week of vacation. Next Sunday, October 13, Rev. Jim Daughtry will be preaching for us in my absence. Please pray for Jim as he prepares to come and deliver God’s Word to us.

Also on Sunday October 13, our current Adult Sunday School class will conclude with a final lesson on the image of God and human sexuality.

Then, on Sunday October 20, the Session will be leading a new 10-week Adult Sunday School Class on the topic of Spiritual Warfare. Our textbook will be Spiritual Warfare: A Biblical and Balanced Perspective (Reformation Heritage Books, 2014), by Brian Borgman and Rob Ventura.

On that day I will also be resuming our long-term sermon series on ‘The Great Events in the History of Redemption.’ We will be continuing our study of the life of King David from 2 Samuel 11.

I look forward to seeing you on the Lord’s Day!

All my love and constant prayers,

    Mike

Come join us in helping with another Reformation Celebration on Sunday, October 27th from 4:30 to 7:30 pm as we focus on the life and legacy of John Knox, the Scottish reformer. Through hands on activities, games and fellowship, we hope to teach about this man’s bold conviction to stand for the Word of God while leading the Scottish Covenanters in staying faithful to the truths of Scripture. Our volunteer sign-up is LIVE. Click HERE and volunteer to man a “table.” Many of you did this last time, and it is very easy and fun. Amy Drown can provide some direction, but please go ahead and add your name to our volunteer list. Thanks in advance for your kingdom service. Soli Deo Gloria!
