    Sermon Preview:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

This coming Lord’s Day we look forward to Dr. Matthew Elliott’s second sermon on the life of the Old Testament character named Mephibosheth. I know you were all very encouraged and challenged by his message last week. And we also know that the Lord will bless His people richly once again as we take a second look at God’s magnificent grace at work in the life of this Old Testament man. Please be in fervent prayer for Matthew, and for the preaching of God’s Holy Word.

Thank you for praying for the meeting of the PCA General Assembly this week in Birmingham. We all enjoyed a rich time of fellowship together, and we did indeed sense God’s power and leadership among us. As I have previously indicated, the Session of CPC is planning a report to present to you regarding the decisions that were made by the Assembly, particularly those addressing the matters of controversy among us. We will soon announce a date for a Sunday night gathering for this report and for fellowship afterwards. Please continue to pray diligently for our denomination and for our Presbytery and churches.

Speaking of the Biblical and theological challenges confronting us as a denomination, let me also urge you to continue to study and meditate upon the Epistle of Jude. We will begin our journey through this one-page New Testament letter next Lord’s Day, July 3. There could not be a timelier message for our church that will guide and encourage us as we seek to be faithful to the Gospel, to the Scriptures, and to our Savior.

I love each of you so very much, and rejoice and glory in the Lord constantly because of you!

    See you Sunday,

    Mike

    Sermon Preview:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

Carol and I are looking forward to being back with you this coming Lord’s Day in worship! Thank you so very much for your kind prayers for us while we were away on vacation.

As we head into the summer, let me give you a quick look at what’s coming up in the next few weeks.

The Session has asked Dr. Matthew Elliott to preach for us the next two Sundays, June 19th and 26th. I will be leading worship and Communion. We are so excited for Matthew’s recent graduation from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and the completion of his PhD in Pastoral Theology. Over the next two sermons Matthew will take us on a tour of the two short accounts of the life of the Old Testament character named Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan. This Sunday, we will study the loving-kindness extended to Mephibosheth by King David from 2 Samuel 9. The message is entitled, “Is There Anyone Left That I May Show Him Kindness?” Please pray for Matthew as he delivers God’s Word to us.

Then on Sunday July 3 we will welcome Seth and Jessica Lewis to our worship service. As you know, they are our missionaries to Ireland where they are currently helping to plant a church in the city of Carrigtwohill. Seth will be giving us a report on their work.

Also on July 3, I will begin our summer preaching series on The Epistle of Jude. I hope that you have had (or will have) the opportunity to get familiar with this little letter penned by the brother of our Lord Jesus.

Finally, let me remind you to be in fervent prayer for the meeting of the General Assembly of the PCA next week in Birmingham. Please pray that the Lord will bless the PCA to be faithful to His Word and to contend courageously for the Gospel.

I love you all so dearly, and I can’t wait to see you on Sunday!

    Mike

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

Rev. Dieter Paulson, who has planted Redeemer PCA Church Scottsboro, will be preaching from 1 Corinthians 3:1-9 on “Believing in a Big God.”

Please lift up this dear brother in your prayers as he comes to minister God’s Word to our church family.

    Summer ‘Homework’

As I mentioned to you a couple of weeks ago, I will be preaching through the Epistle of Jude this summer. As we will discover, the message of this little book is a timely one for sure. I would encourage you to begin getting familiar with Jude by reading it several times in a couple of different translations of the Bible. Plus, you will also benefit from securing a good commentary. Let me suggest The Message of 2 Peter & Jude, by Dick Lucas and Christopher Green (The Bible Speaks Today Series, Leicester: Inter-Varsity Press, 1995).

Also, please continue to pray most fervently for the upcoming meeting of the General Assembly of the PCA (June 21-24 in Birmingham). Pray that our denomination will faithfully resist the temptation to compromise on the supreme authority of Holy Scripture, and will courageously uphold the ‘non-negotiables’ of the Christian faith that, as Jude says, have been “once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 1:3).

I love you all so very much, and I always have you on my heart and in my prayers,

    Mike

    Sermon Preview:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

In Acts 2:41-42 we find a simple description of the Church that was formed after Peter preached in Jerusalem at Pentecost:

41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls. 42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.

Embedded within these inspired verses are what we have come to refer to as ‘the means of grace.’ That is, we see three ways that the Holy Spirit initially bought new life to those who believed in Christ, and then sustained that new life over the course of time. They are, 1) the Word, 2) the Sacraments, and 3) prayer.

In the Westminster Larger Catechism, these three ‘means’ are further explained:

    Q. 154. What are the outward means whereby Christ communicates to us the benefits of his mediation?

    A. The outward and ordinary means whereby Christ communicates to his church the benefits of his mediation, are all his ordinances; especially the word, sacraments, and prayer; all which are made effectual to the elect for their salvation.

That the ‘means of grace’ are said to be “effectual to the elect for their salvation” indicates that these are the ways the Holy Spirit brings us to maturity in Christ, nourishes our souls, and testifies to us that we belong to our Lord, thus, providing divine comfort and the assurance in this life that we are redeemed.

On Sunday, we will explore this passage of Scripture and consider how the Word, the Sacraments, and prayer not only distinguish Christ’s Church, but also bring about her growth in holiness.

Sunday is our last day of Sunday School until September 11

Our Summer schedule begins next Sunday, May 29. There will be no Sunday School until we resume on September 11. Over the summer, we will have our Sunday morning fellowship time from 10:00-10:30 AM, followed by Worship at 10:30 AM each Lord’s Day.

I love you all and hope to see you on Sunday!
