Month: August 2024

  • Announcements – August 30, 2024

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This coming Lord’s Day we will complete our summer preaching series on ‘The Gracious Commands of the Gospel.’   My prayer all along has been that through these messages we would come to a deeper understanding of the vital link between our Lord’s grace in salvation and our walk in obedience to His will and Word.  On Sunday we will conclude our examination of the gracious command found in 1 Peter 2:21, that we should closely “follow” our Savior “in His steps,” especially His life of suffering on our behalf.
Our text will be 1 Peter 4:17-19 where the Apostle Peter links our afflictions with the wise and sovereign “will” of our Father, who is the “faithful Creator” (v. 19).  Here, Peter will offer us a two-fold exhortation in light of the truth that our Father in Heaven rules all things, even our experiences of suffering.  First, we must always “entrust our souls” to His wise and faithful care. Then, we must continue to serve His Kingdom by “doing good,” even in our afflictions.
    A Look Ahead
On September 8 at 9:15 AM, Sunday School resumes for the Fall semester.  As always, there will be classes for all ages.  Our Adults will be studying The Lord’s Prayer, and our main textbook will be The Prayer of Our Lord, by Dr. R. C. Sproul (Ligonier Ministries: 2009).  Be sure to secure your copy and plan on studying with us as we learn how to pray!
Also on September 8, we will resume our sermon series on the Prophecy of Ezekiel.  I will be preaching eleven messages from this astounding Old Testament book leading up to our celebration of Advent 2024 (beginning on December 1).  Let me encourage you to continue your reading of Ezekiel as we learn how his ancient message to the captive Israelites speaks so powerfully to our own time.
I love you all so very much,
    Mike

  • Announcements – August 23, 2024

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
There is a little saying we use from time-to-time that expresses how we feel when life seems to take us from one unpleasant experience to another: ‘I’ve been thrown from the frying pan into the fire.’
Well, believe it or not, there is actually some degree of Biblical justification for such a comment.  The Apostle Peter, in 1 Peter 4:12, tells us that we believers in Christ often find ourselves in the midst of a “fiery trial.”
As this designation suggests, afflictions and episodes of suffering often burn like hot coals, glowing red with intense heat and producing searing pain, either of soul, or body, or both!  And yet, as we’ve learned previously, we have each been “called” by our Heavenly Father for this very purpose, that we might “follow” closely in the “steps” of Jesus our “example” who “suffered” for our sins (1 Peter 2:21).
In our second of three messages on Peter’s gracious command to “follow” Jesus in suffering (1 Peter 2:21), we will consider what he teaches us in 1 Peter 4:12-13 this coming Lord’s Day.  In this passage we will identify and explore two additional exhortations regarding the reason and the manner in which we are to copy our Savior’s life, carefully stepping where He once walked.
First, Peter will exhort us not to “be surprised” when we find ourselves in the fires of suffering (v. 12). And he will also tell us why we are afflicted to begin with.
Then, he will urge us to “rejoice and be glad” at the privilege of fellowshipping with our Savior in His “sufferings” (v. 13).
What a joy it will be to immerse our minds and hearts in our Father’s Word this Sunday!
    I love you all,
    Mike

  • Announcements – August 16, 2024

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
As you know, in our Sunday morning sermons we’ve been considering some of the ‘Gracious Commands of the Gospel’ that are discovered in 1 Peter.  Over the next (and last) three weeks of this series we will probe one final, and quite surprising, command.
The nature of this particular exhortation, growing from the saving grace and mercy we have each received in Christ Jesus, is a bit difficult to comprehend.  This is why we will take three Sundays to examine it.
Our initial text for this command is found in 1 Peter 2:21-23.  Here, the Apostle Peter summons us to “follow” our Savior, our “example,” even to the point of placing our ‘feet’ in “His steps.”  Likely, there is nothing so far in these words that shocks or surprises anyone.
However, when we consider the wider context of this exhortation, we see its connection to suffering.  Peter says here that our Lord has left us an “example” of suffering in which we are to closely “follow” Him.  In fact, he makes this command even stronger when he says, “to this,” a life of affliction, “you have been called” (v. 21).
Later, in 1 Peter 4:1, the Apostle will put it this way: “Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking.”
Are we really commanded to suffer?  Has our Lord actually ordered us to “follow” closely His “steps,” those that led to His agony and death?  And if so, what does this mean?
Well, I have a feeling that you now understand why we need to travel slowly and prayerfully down this road.  Of all of the ‘Gracious Commands’ that we find in the New Testament, this one will be the most challenging.
Let us pray that we will hear, understand, and receive our Lord’s Word as we gather to worship Him on Sunday.
I love you all so very much,
    Mike

  • Announcements – August 9, 2024

My Beloved Ones in Christ Jesus,
You’ve likely heard someone say to another person, normally in the midst of a conflict, ‘Stop being such a baby!’  To be honest (and to my shame!), I’ve been told that very thing more than once in my life. In such a context, being a ‘baby’ is not a good thing.
It is also true that in reference to our lives as believers, being like a baby is likewise frowned upon, given the many New Testament exhortations to grow in Christian maturity.
However, there is a sense in which being a baby is not only a good thing, it is essential for us as Christians!
In 1 Peter 2:1-3, the Apostle Peter sets forth this most puzzling truth:  In order to “grow up into salvation,” we must be like “newborn infants.”  It appears, then, that there is a situation when being such a baby is actually commanded of us!
As we continue our sermon series this Lord’s Day on ‘The Gracious Commands of the Gospel,’ we will examine Peter’s perplexing exhortation to be like babies as we “long for the pure spiritual milk” (v.2).
I can’t wait to gather with you before our gracious Heavenly Father on Sunday, not only to worship Him, but to probe the wonders and mysteries of His blessed Word!
You are my joy and my delight, and I love you all so dearly,
    Mike

  • Announcements – August 2, 2024

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
One of the great joys of parenthood (and grandparenthood!) is watching the development of our children as they learn how to walk.  That’s the way we always speak of it . . .they ‘learn’ to walk.  But to use this language seems to imply that someone is teaching them.  Yet, we all know that our little ones, if they are healthy, just do it. They first roll over. Then they crawl.  Then they stand.  And then comes the very first step, and they are off walking all over the place to our great delight or consternation!
Strictly speaking, however, no one really ‘teaches’ them to do this.  Our babies don’t attend walking classes, or watch instructional videos, or read manuals on the subject.  There is something designed into them by our Heavenly Father that prompts them to move, to progress towards that first step.
This coming Lord’s Day, we will consider something else that just happens to us, that is, to Christians.  Having been redeemed and given a new nature, it comes naturally to us as new creations in Christ Jesus.  The Apostle Paul once put it this way:
Now concerning brotherly love you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another” (1 Thessalonians 4:9).
All who are in Christ have already been taught to practice brotherly love.  The ‘teaching,’ conducted by our Father as He deposited His Spirit within us, was accomplished when we received a new heart in the miracle of regeneration.    Now, we just need to do it!
This is why the Apostle Peter, in 1 Peter 1:22, commands all God-taught believers to “love one another earnestly from a pure heart.”   We know how to do this.  We’ve graduated from our Lord’s school.  The desire and the ability to love stirs us to move just like our Father’s design for our children’s bodies makes them roll, wiggle, and eventually stand and walk.
We just need to put love into practice!
Our text for Sunday’s message will come from 1 Peter 1:22-23, and we will address the next ‘Gracious Command of the Gospel’ that calls us to do what we already know how to do–to love each other deeply and energetically!
I love you all so much,
    Mike
