Announcements and Order of Worship – May 31 2019

Sermon Preview

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This coming Lord’s Day, and again on June 9, we will welcome Rev. Jim Daughtry to our pulpit. Carol and I will be away on vacation through June 15, and while we are away Jim will be preaching a two-part series of messages on John 1:1-18 entitled ‘Behold Your God.’

Sunday’s sermon will come from John 1:1-5. Certainly, this is one of the most incredible passages in the Bible as it revels to us the full deity and sovereign power of our Savior, who is here called “the Word” (v. 1). Please be in prayer for Jim as he preaches for us the next two Sundays.

As I indicated last week, on Sunday June 16 we will begin our summer preaching series on ‘The Parables of Jesus.’ If you would like to do some personal study on the parables this summer, let me recommend two very good books for you:

Simon Kistemaker, The Parables: Understanding the Stories Jesus Told. Baker Books, 1980.

David Wenham, The Parables of Jesus. Inter-Varsity Press, 1989.

Thank you for your kind prayers for us while we are away, and I look forward to seeing you in a couple of weeks!

All my love for you always,

Mike

Announcements:

Summer Schedule: Christ Pres is on Summer Schedule, which means Sunday School and regular weekly activities are on hiatus. Our weekly time of fellowship begins at 10 AM, with worship beginning at 10:30 AM. Regular weekly activities resume September 3 and Sunday School resumes September 8.

HPRC: We are partnering with the Huntsville Pregnancy Resource Center to offer support for their ministry to families in Huntsville. On Mother’s Day we will have information available to determine how you can be involved at the Welcome desk. You can also stop by and pick up a baby bottle to deposit your pocket change (dollars and checks also accepted) every day to collect funds for the center. The bottle can be returned every Sunday in May in the Narthex with the final collection date on Father’s Day. This would make a great project for your children to be involved in, too. Watch for details this summer on an upcoming baby shower to gather baby supplies for the center to help the new mothers. Contact Christina Bagdazian, 256.812.2442, with any questions.

Psummer Psalms: Everyone in the congregation is invited to memorize one entire Psalm this summer, then join us for a recitation at the church, followed by ice cream, Sunday, Aug 11, 4:30pm. “How sweet are your words to my taste…” Psalm 119:103  Recitation can be individual, or together in a group or family. We had a great group last year–young and old sharing God’s word out loud and with conviction. If interested, email darondrown@gmail.com for periodic encouragement and accountability.

Senior Fellows: On Tuesday, June 4 at 9:00 AM the Senior Fellows will enjoy breakfast, fellowship and a devotional at the Church. Guests are welcome. Both Senior Fellows teams will serve at the Downtown Rescue Mission. Team B will serve on Tuesday, June 4. Team A will serve on Friday, June 14. Each team will meet at 11:15 AM and start feeding at 11:30 AM. Carpools will leave the church at 10:30. On Friday, June 21 at 7:00 PM (show starts at 7:30) the Senior Fellows will attend the Burritt on the Mountain City Lights & Stars Concert to see the In the Mood Band (Richard Bagdazian). Buy tickets on line at BurrittOnTheMountain.com). The address is 3101 Burritt Drive. Carpools will leave the church at 6:30 PM.

VBS: VBS registration will be live on June 12. We still need volunteers, so please see Ashley Turnbull to sign up to help!

Nursery: Baby nursery volunteers are needed for the summer semester. Please click HERE to sign up for 1-2 Sundays over the course of the summer. Our babies love our member volunteers!

Greeting Ministry: I wanted to make you aware of an opportunity to support the work and worship of the church.  As the church has grown, we have noticed the need to expand and organize our greeting ministry on Sunday mornings.  It is a significant and tangible opportunity to welcome visitors and members each Sunday morning.  Though in a different context, we often overlook the fact that Paul regularly greeted the churches in his letters as well as encouraged Christ’s disciples to greet one another. I wanted to invite you to serve in this way, offering up 30 minutes on a Sunday morning to open doors, hand out bulletins, direct to visitors according to their needs, and simply welcome people to worship.  Members at all stages and stations of life are encouraged to serve.  For couples, it is a unique opportunity to serve your local church together. If you are interested, please navigate to the sign-up form (link below) for opportunities to serve during the summer months of June, July and August.  You are certainly welcome to sign up for multiple Sundays if you desire.  Upon signing up, you will receive a brief informational on ‘what to do.’  The sign-up form will generate a reminder email for you two days before the Sunday you are scheduled to serve.

In Him,
Matthew K Elliott
