Sermon Preview

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

This coming Sunday our sermon text will come from 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14. It is especially timely that we consider this passage as we approach a national holiday that annually reminds us that human history has been one of perpetual war.

If you get familiar with the historical setting of this letter, you will find that conflict (spiritual war), trouble, coming tribulations, and the threat of greater hostilities against the Church loom large on the horizon. Surely the first-century saints in the little Thessalonian Church were terribly alarmed, both by what they were experiencing and by the future troubles that Paul had promised were on the way (1 Thess. 1:6; 2:14; 2 Thess. 1:4-5; 2:1-12).

It is this very thing that we have in common with our first-century Christian brethren. We also know a lot about anxiety and fear.  And we are all very familiar with the persistent disquietude of soul that seems to plague us, particularly in light of the conflicts and hostilities that greet us with every sunrise.

In response to this, the Apostle Paul supplies some concrete help in navigating through such times as ours, and doing so with hope and peace. We encounter his inspired assistance in the words of verses 13-14:

But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

There is enormous help here for all troubled and anxious hearts! I can’t wait to discover it with you this Lord’s Day!

No Sunday School Until September

Just a reminder that we are now on our Summer Sunday School Break. There will be No Sunday School Until September 8. In the meantime, there will be a Morning Fellowship Time at 10:00 AM, followed by Worship at 10:30 AM each Sunday.

Looking Ahead Into the Summer

Carol and I will be away on vacation from June 1 through June 15. In my absence, Rev. Jim Daughtry will be preaching for us on Sunday June 2 and Sunday June 9.

Upon my return to the pulpit on June 16, we will begin a summer preaching series on ‘The Parables of Jesus.’ The first sermon in this series will be based upon our Lord’s words in Matthew 13:10-17, where He explains to the Disciples why He teaches in parables. Then, we will study eleven of our Lord’s parables as recorded in Matthew and Luke.

I pray that you will have a most blessed weekend, and I can’t wait to come before our King with you this Lord’s Day!

All my love always,

Mike

Announcements:

HPRC: We are partnering with the Huntsville Pregnancy Resource Center to offer support for their ministry to families in Huntsville. On Mother’s Day we will have information available to determine how you can be involved at the Welcome desk. You can also stop by and pick up a baby bottle to deposit your pocket change (dollars and checks also accepted) every day to collect funds for the center. The bottle can be returned every Sunday in May in the Narthex with the final collection date on Father’s Day. This would make a great project for your children to be involved in, too. Watch for details this summer on an upcoming baby shower to gather baby supplies for the center to help the new mothers. Contact Christina Bagdazian, 256.812.2442, with any questions.

Psummer Psalms: Everyone in the congregation is invited to memorize one entire Psalm this summer, then join us for a recitation at the church, followed by ice cream, Sunday, Aug 11, 4:30pm. “How sweet are your words to my taste…” Psalm 119:103  Recitation can be individual, or together in a group or family. We had a great group last year–young and old sharing God’s word out loud and with conviction. If interested, email darondrown@gmail.com for periodic encouragement and accountability.

Nursery: Baby nursery volunteers are needed for the summer semester. Please click HERE to sign up for 1-2 Sundays over the course of the summer. Our babies love our member volunteers!

Greeting Ministry: I wanted to make you aware of an opportunity to support the work and worship of the church.  As the church has grown, we have noticed the need to expand and organize our greeting ministry on Sunday mornings.  It is a significant and tangible opportunity to welcome visitors and members each Sunday morning.  Though in a different context, we often overlook the fact that Paul regularly greeted the churches in his letters as well as encouraged Christ’s disciples to greet one another. I wanted to invite you to serve in this way, offering up 30 minutes on a Sunday morning to open doors, hand out bulletins, direct to visitors according to their needs, and simply welcome people to worship.  Members at all stages and stations of life are encouraged to serve.  For couples, it is a unique opportunity to serve your local church together. If you are interested, please navigate to the sign-up form (link below) for opportunities to serve during the summer months of June, July and August.  You are certainly welcome to sign up for multiple Sundays if you desire.  Upon signing up, you will receive a brief informational on ‘what to do.’  The sign-up form will generate a reminder email for you two days before the Sunday you are scheduled to serve.
