    Sermon Preview:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

First, just a reminder that everyone is invited to the Picnic tonight at 5:30 pm at the church house. No worries if you didn’t RSVP – everyone is welcome! There will be plenty of BBQ, brisket, sides, drinks, and sweets! We look forward to a great time of fellowship together!

Then, on Sunday in Worship our sermon will come from 1 Peter 1:14-16. This will be our fifth message on ‘The Church: The People of God.’ We will be considering the Church as a ‘Holy People.’

More specifically, we will be seeking to understand why Christians are so frequently called “saints” in the New Testament (see 1 Cor. 1:2 for one example), and what the Apostle Peter means when he says, “but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct” (1 Pet. 1:15).

Also this week in our Adult Sunday School Class on ‘The Fundamentals of the Christian Faith,’ we will be continuing our examination of Protestant Liberalism, the characteristics that define it, and its relationship to the rise of theological Progressivism.

Your Session believes that this is one of the most important topics we’ve ever covered in Sunday School as it relates directly to the challenges that virtually every Christian denomination is presently facing, including our own. I hope you will join us this week for study and discussion!

I love you all, and pray for you always!

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!”–Psalm 100:1
My Dear Ones in the Lord Jesus Christ,
Next to Psalm 23, Psalm 100 may be one of the more well-known chapters in the Psalter.  Its five simple verses are easy to memorize, and perhaps you have already committed them to memory.  We typically recall the first line, verse 1, when we sing in worship together.  There are many among us who are blessed with the ability to sing, to hit the right notes at the right time, and to make the music of corporate worship a little like heaven. Then there are the rest of us who, like me, just sound out that “joyful noise” the best we can.
But what if I told you that this first line in the Psalm really isn’t about those who can’t sing, or is even depicting the gathered community of believers in worship at all.   It’s much, much bigger than this!
The New American Standard translation reads this way: “Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth.”  The single Hebrew word rendered “shout” in the NASB, and “make a joyful noise” in the English Standard Version, is an “homage-shout” one would make “to a king” (Derek Kidner, Psalms 73-150, p. 388).    The same word appears earlier in Psalm 98:4.  And notice that in both cases it is addressed to “all the earth.”
What’s really going on here is that the unnamed author of this Psalm is claiming the whole world for the Lord God!  The entire “earth” is brought under the Divine command to acknowledge the Kingship of Yahweh!  This theme appears with remarkable frequency in the Psalms.  Let me give you but a few examples:
The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein” (24:1).
Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him!” (33:8).
For the Lord, the Most High, is to be feared, a great king over all the earth” (47:2).
Shout for joy to God, all the earth” (66:1).
O kingdoms of the earth, sing to God; sing praises to the Lord” (68:32).
Praise the Lord from the earth” (148:7).
It is only beginning with verse 2 that the focus of the Psalm turns specifically to those whom the Lord has redeemed, forgiven, and clothed with garments of salvation, and invited into the very Holy of Holies: “Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise!” (v. 4).
So what does all of this mean?
In the first place, as we come to another Monday and the beginning of a new week, we find blessed encouragement in the fact that our Lord does indeed reign over “all the earth!”  This is always a wonderful thing to be reminded of as we awaken and start off on another day of life and work in ‘the city of man.’  Our God has complete sovereignty over every square inch of the world, and the whole universe!  All of creation is subject to His reign, and all people everywhere are accountable to Him and  are under the authority of His Word!   And eventually, all of creation, including every person who has ever lived, believer and unbeliever alike, will verbally acknowledge His reign though His Eternal Son.  As Paul puts it:
so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:10-11).
What could be more comforting to us than knowing this!
But there is another most encouraging aspect of this Psalm as well!
Those who have tasted of Yahweh’s infinite mercy and kindness in the Lord Jesus Christ are now liberated to live in this world with joy, peace, and perfect security.  If our God does reign over all creation, then we who belong to Him could not be more blessed nor secure, even in a world that is aflame in rebellion against Him.
This is why the psalmist reminds us that we, His beloved, are “His people, and the sheep of His pasture” (v. 3).  It is we, those saved by the blood and righteousness of the Son, who are able to come with thanksgiving into His presence (v. 4), knowing that, “the Lord is good; His steadfast love endures forever, and His faithfulness to all generations” (v. 5).
The One who rules all creation is the very One whose love, faithfulness, and grace always flows endlessly down from heaven into our lives here on this earth.  Our Savior is the King!  We are His beloved “sheep”!  In this world, which is ever under His command (even when it seems most chaotic), we are watched over with His eternal eyes and ever-attentive ears, and always embraced with His heart of infinite and unrelenting love!  He is “good” (v. 5) to us every second, every day, always and forever!
Let these words encourage you today!  Meditate upon your Lord’s Kingship.  Remember His persistent goodness to you who are His most loved “sheep.”  Trust fully in His “steadfast love” and perfect “faithfulness.”  And as you go about your day today, sing His praises, even if you can only make a little noise!
I love you all with all my heart!
    Mike

    Sermon Preview:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This Sunday we will continue our sermon series on ‘The Church: The People of God.’ Our text will be taken from Revelation 1:4-6 and 1 Peter 2:5-9. In these passages we will discover that the Church is a ‘Priestly People.’

Many of you are perhaps familiar with the doctrine of ‘The Priesthood of All Believers.’ This was one of the key theological points of emphasis at the time of the Protestant Reformation. It is a rich Biblical doctrine that will help us to better appreciate who we are as the Church which our Savior has established.

Also on Sunday, it will be our special joy during Worship to hear a Missions Report from Noah and Karleigh Stephens, our Missionaries to Thailand. We look forward to meeting them in person and learning more about their work, and about ways that we might pray for them more specifically.

I will be a wonderful day of Worship, and I can’t wait to see you there!

All my love and prayers for you always,

    Mike

  • Monday Encouragement

Oh sing to the Lord a new song”–Psalm 96:1
My Brothers and Sisters in Christ our King,
In the 150 Psalms, we discover the exhortation to sing over 60 times.  And what is in view in these commands is singing that is directed to the Lord and King of our salvation.
Of course, we’d expect as much in Israel’s official ‘worship book,’ since we know that the expression of our love and adoration for God by means of song is essential to worship.  Those redeemed by our gracious God in both testaments were and always will be a singing people when they gather together! In fact, this simple point is proven very easily by reflection on the last book Holy Scripture where the Apostle John describes the Church in glory as singing in the presence of the Lord forever (Rev. 14:3; 15:3).  What’s intriguing here in Psalm 96:1, however, is that the saints of God are summoned to sing “a new song” right now, daily even, and not simply while gathered in wordship.
As we reflect upon this simple line from verse 1 on this new Monday, I want to speak about the personal and daily application of this exhortation.
The use of the word “new” would surely suggest that there is, or was, an ‘old’ song that we must not sing anymore.  Something “new” should flow continually from our lips, and should replace whatever was there before.  So, what could this “new song” be? And where does it come from? What are its lyrics? And what is the ‘old’ one it replaces?
Perhaps you’ve greeted a family member or friend with the standard ‘How you doing?’ and they answered, ‘Same old song and dance.’  What they mean by this is that nothing has changed about their lives, as far as they can see.  It is, then, a cry (or song) of resignation.  To use the words of Ecclesiastes, it is one of surrender to the perpetual “vanity “of life (Ecc. 1:14).  Life moves on, many times unpleasantly.  And as a popular idiom expresses it, ‘Stuff happens’ (which is usually followed by, ‘Get over it!’).
All over our world at this very moment, people are ‘singing.’ While they may not be literally singing, there is for sure some kind of a ‘melody’ turning over in their hearts.  There is a ‘song,’ an arrangement of thoughts and words, bouncing around in the brain that reflects their outlook on life.  The ‘lyrics’ of such ‘songs’ are often hopeless, vain, vulgar, angry, bitter, full of malice towards others, complaints about this or that, and general negativity in response to life as it meets us on this side of Eden.   And, as you know so well, these inner songs of futility often leak out of the soul and into the mouth where they are sounded aloud for all to hear. If you but stop and listen just for a moment, you can hear our whole world singing away, crying out with bitter, often curse-laden, expressions of pain and sorrow, all caused by humanity’s guilt and estrangement from God.
These, then, are the ‘old songs’ that we all have sung.  And, if we are honest, they may well be the lyrics we’ve been singing lately, even as followers of Jesus.
While the temptation surely exists for all believers to revert to such songs of emptiness (and we are all guilty of such ‘singing’), the author of Psalm 96 calls upon us to fight back by singing something blessedly “new.”
Thankfully, we get real help with this from some of the other places in the Psalms where we are told to sing to the Lord.   Especially enlightening is Psalm 40:3–
He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God.”
    There’s the answer!
The “new song” sounded by those whom the Lord has saved, and is ever transforming, comes from Him directly!  It is His special gift to those whom He has loved, graciously favored, flooded with His saving mercies, and indwelt by His Spirit. The ‘lyrics’ consists of praises, words of adoration, expressions of gratitude, and the exaltation of His glorious attributes.  These “new” lyrics are to replace the old ones that reek with the odor of this lost world and of unredeemed hearts, those souls that have never been transformed by Divine mercy and delivered from the vanity of this life.
No, my Beloved!  We sing the songs of those who have been redeemed!  We sing “songs of loudest praise.” Each of us who have been rescued and restored by amazing grace can now sound out these blessed words: “I will sing of my Redeemer and his wondrous love to me; on the cruel cross he suffered, from the curse to set me free.”
These Divinely given words are to replace all of the old tunes that characterized us before we were found by Jesus. And all the day long, every day, the melodious praises of our Savior are to flow from our mouths as expressions of our new heart!
So, let me encourage you to sing today!  But don’t be tricked into singing the ‘Same old song and dance.’  In those inevitable moments of weakness that will afflict all of us, lift your eyes to your Lord and Redeemer.  Behold His love, His grace, His goodness, His glory, His greatness, and His unfathomable kindness toward you in Christ Jesus.  Then, sing away!
Today, and each day that will follow, you’ve got a brand new song that needs to be performed not only for your Lord, but for this lost world that only knows the ‘oldies.’
I love you all so much, and my heart is filled with praise for you!
    Mike

    Sermon Preview:

    Beloved Ones in Christ Jesus,

On this day, we are especially mindful of our Savior’s death for our sins. It was on a Friday that Jesus was nailed to the cross, and then died shortly thereafter and was placed in the tomb. His death, however, was neither a martyrdom nor a murder, but a freely given sacrifice for our sins.

Tonight at 6:00 PM we will worship together and focus upon the cross of our Savior.

As we have done in the past on Good Friday, we will travel together through various Scripture passages and Christian hymns that explain to us the meaning of the death of the Son of God. Then, we will look briefly at the inspired words of Romans 6:3 where we learn the amazing fact that we also died with Jesus that Friday afternoon so long ago.

What could this mean that we’ve been “baptized into His death” (v. 3)?

Then, on Easter Sunday, we will gather to remember and celebrate the bodily resurrection of our Lord and King. Once again we will turn to Paul’s words in Romans 6 where, in verses 4-5, we discover that we not only died with Jesus, but we have also been raised from the dead with Him!

What could this mean that “as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life” (v. 4)?

I hope to see you all tonight and on Easter Sunday!

You are loved fervently and payed for constantly,

    Mike

Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!”– Psalm 95:6.

My Beloved Family in Christ Jesus our Lord,

For more than two decades now, one of the most famous American TV shows has been Survivor (it is currently in its 43rd season!). I have never watched this show, but I do understand the premise. A group of contestants is placed in a remote location with very few supplies, and they are forced to deal with all of the daunting challenges and deprivations until only one remains, the ‘survivor.’

Each episode chronicles the creative, and even devious, ways that the contestants fend for themselves under the most extreme conditions. What’s clear is that, given such dire circumstances, one cannot remain passive and hope to win. You’ve got to get busy saving yourself! Such extreme danger demands action! You snooze, you lose!

Long ago, the Israelites were encamped in the wilderness during the days of Moses, enduring their own version of Survivor. That dry and dusty place presented them with many challenges, the most basic of which was the need for water.

Exodus 17:2-3 provides us with the inspired account of what happened:

Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?” But the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?”

As you can see, it was not a pleasant experience for either Moses or the nation under his charge. What’s remarkable is that Moses even survived the wrath of the thirsty and terribly frustrated people (no pun intended)! In fact, verse 4 says as much:

So Moses cried to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me.”

While the people’s complaints were aimed immediately at Moses, this sinful response to their thirst was actually an act of treason against God. It was at that place, “Massah,” aka “Meribah,” that the covenant people put Yahweh to the test (v. 7).

In Psalm 95, the anonymous author of this hymn refers to that Old Testament episode of Survivor found in Exodus 17. In verses 8-10 he reveals the real problem with the Israelites that day in the wilderness. They hardened their hearts against the Lord, they refused to trust in His provision despite all that He had previously done for them, and they were exposed as those who did not know the ways of the Lord their God. As a result, that sinful generation of Israelites did not enter God’s “rest” (v.11). They died in the wilderness. They did not survive to see the Promised Land.

While there is surely a warning here for us as we walk with Christ our Lord, there is also a great word of encouragement for us on this new Monday. Perhaps we can state it this way. What is your natural inclination in times of need, distress, or emergency, when you’re trying to survive? Mine is to get busy, to make something happen, to figure a way out, to actively respond to the situation. When confronted with a threatening state of affairs, our pulse quickens, our minds shift into hyper drive, and sweat drips from our brow as we frenetically move about in emergency mode.

As I write these words the image of Barney Fife from the old Andy Griffith TV show comes to mind. I can see Barney, Andy’s rather incompetent but thoroughly loveable deputy, fumbling and fidgeting uncontrollably as he tries to put his one bullet in his revolver when the bad guy shows up in Mayberry to rob the local bank. However comical this image is, I often see myself in a similar mode when my life, or my world, seems to be coming apart.

Perhaps you share that sensation, that need to make something happen, that impatience that leads either to questioning the goodness and wisdom of the Lord, or discounting Him altogether and taking matters into your own hands.

    But let’s once more ponder those key words found here in Psalm 95:6–“worship . . . bow down . . . kneel . . . .”

The Old Testament Israelites, languishing there in the wilderness, reacted to their dire situation by acting like survivors who had no one to depend on except themselves. In other words, they failed to “rest” in the Lord in that moment of need and danger, and thereby forfeited the greater “rest” of Zion. What they should have done was “worship,” “bow down,” and “kneel” before the “Maker” of heaven and earth, their “great God” and exalted “King” (vv. 2-5).

It’s true that the world in which we live and serve our Savior is still aflame in its rebellion against our Maker. All creation continues to groan under the incalculable weight of human guilt. Nations still rise up against nations, and wars, famines, and disasters are on each day’s agenda until Jesus comes again. Yet, we who belong to Jesus are not cast in the role of survivors! It’s not up to us to fix our situation in this world. Our Father has promised to provide all that we need for life and godliness. There is no need to panic, to become paralyzed by fear or necessity. There is only cause to rest! To trust! To hope! To fall down and worship the One who never fails and is never late in delivering His chosen people!

What will you do today in the face of your needs, fears, anxieties, and emergencies? Fidget, fumble around with frenzied intensity, acting like a mere survivor? Or will you stop, drop, and worship with humble dependence upon your all-sufficient Maker and King?

I love you all so much, and pray that you will know the blessed “rest” of Zion even today!

    Sermon Preview:

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

There was an old joke about the Church making its way around the seminary when I was a student back in the early 1980’s. It went something like this:

A young man awakens on a Sunday morning. He’s not in a very good mood. He calls out to his mother and says, ‘Mom, I don’t want to go to church today.’ After some silence, ‘But you must,’ came the answer from down the hall. ‘But mom, I don’t feel good,’ he replied. With that, his mom ratcheted up her strategy and said, ‘But darling, Jesus wants you to go to church today.’

Unpersuaded, the boy retorted, ‘But I don’t like church! I don’t like the music! I don’t like the all the long prayers, and all that sitting and standing and sitting again! And I really don’t like the people there! They are mean and they call me names, and I’ve just had my fill of them!’

Then came the final salvo from his mon: ‘But son, you have to go to church toady . . . you’re the pastor!’

Well, perhaps we’ve all experienced similar feelings about the Church from time to time. But that silly story does strike an important nerve, prompting serious and prayerful reflection upon some of the very real questions and concerns being raised about the Body of Christ today.

As you might know, some ‘experts’ have actually gone so far as to declare the death of the local Church. In their view, there is no need for local Churches like ours, with membership rolls and weekly gatherings in person for worship, instruction, and fellowship. The Church has been killed by technology, by its own cultural and spiritual slide into irrelevance, and by massive scandals and the apparently ubiquitous moral shortcomings of Church leaders. Christians simply don’t need the Church in order to be good and faithful believers in Christ, or so the claim goes.

But is this true? Has the Church reached the end of her life-span and usefulness? Do we really need to ‘go to Church’ anymore?

In light of such questions, we must reflect very deeply upon what God’s Word says about this body called the ‘Church.’

Beginning this coming Lord’ Day, we are going to take an eight-week trip through the Scriptures to discover what the Church is, where the Church came from, why the Church exists, how a real Church can be recognized.

We will begin our study on Sunday with the inspired words of the Apostle Peter found in 1 Peter 2:9-10. There we will discover the origin and identity of the Church.

What a great joy it will be to worship together, and I can’t wait to see you all!

I love you so very much,

    Mike

  • Monday Encouragement

Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!”–Psalm 90:17

My Beloved Ones in Christ Jesus our Lord,

Perhaps you were just a bit surprised (maybe alarmed!) yesterday in worship by the words of the Athanasian Creed which we confessed together at the beginning of our service. This ancient Creed of the early Christian Church (produced in the late fifth century AD) is largely known and appreciated for its language setting forth the orthodox doctrine of the Trinity, particularly as it relates to the Person of Christ. But what likely took you off guard was the line about those who shall escape God’s judgment and be admitted to heaven:

And they that have done good shall go into life everlasting and they that have done evil into everlasting fire.

On first glance, what the Creed seems to be suggesting is that on the Day of Judgment, it shall be our good works which bring us into the eternal presence of God in heaven. And if this is the case, then why have true and faithful New Testament Churches used this Creed in Lord’s Day worship for the last fifteen-hundred years? After all, isn’t this the exact opposite of what we believe about our works?

Well, let me first say that all of the Creeds used by the Church through the centuries (the Apostles’, Nicene, Chalcedonian, and Athanasian) are summaries of what Scripture teaches. No Creed says everything that can be said about any Biblical or theological topic. They were produced to be accompanied by preaching and exposition, as well as to serve as guides for pastors as they bring instruction to their flocks from the pages of Scripture.

But with regard to this Creed and its statements about good works, we need to remember something that Jesus once said. In Matthew 25, our Lord teaches that on the Day of His return, at the Last Judgment, it is only those who are “righteous” who will gain entrance into “eternal life” (v. 46). These righteous ones, as Jesus makes clear, have done the works that God requires (vv. 31-40). However, those who have not performed these works, the unrighteous, shall be “cursed” (v. 41) and cast into “eternal fire” (vv. 41) and “eternal punishment” (v. 46).

So, you can see that the Athanasian Creed has, indeed, faithfully preserved the very language of our Lord Jesus.

As we ponder these words from the Creed, then, we should also consider what our Lord’s brother James wrote concerning this same subject:

What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?” (James 2:14).

So what’s going on here, not only with the Creed, but with Jesus and His brother?

The answer is that our Lord (and James) was being true to the eternal plan of salvation. You see, that plan has always been ‘salvation by works.’ Now, this is certainly a shocking thing to assert, but if you think about it you’ll see what is intended by such a claim.

The requirement for entrance in to eternal life is perfect righteousness. Or we might say, it is the perfect and perpetual performance of good works that rise to the standard of God’s own spotless holiness. All that one needs to do in order to be saved is obey God’s Law with unspoiled purity at every point! Of course, this makes it certain that there will only be one human who is in heaven, our Lord Jesus Himself!

Yet, as we read the Epistles the fuller picture comes into view. Most notably it is Paul who sets forth the doctrine of justification by faith (see Romans 4-5 especially). What he tells us is that we sinners are saved by God’s grace alone, through faith alone, in the perfect works and righteousness of Christ alone. We are, then, saved by works, but the works which save us are those performed by Christ! They become ours only by His grace through faith in Him.

So, when Jesus says in Matthew 25 that only those righteous ones who do such good works will inherit eternal life, He means that it is only sinners like you and me, who have no righteousness or good works to offer the Father, but who trust in the good works and righteousness of His Son, who shall be saved! On the Day of Judgment, all of Christ’s righteousness will count for me and for you! We know this is the fact because the authorized interpreters of Jesus (and of the Old Testament too!), the Apostles who penned the New Testament Epistles, tell us so.

All of this brings us around to our encouragement for this new Monday.

Psalm 90:17 is telling us that it is our gracious and loving Father, the One who has saved us and who has empowered us by His Spirit, who establishes the work of our hands, and He does so by His “favor,” or grace. This is an Old Testament way of saying what Paul wrote to the Philippians:

for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure” (Philippians 2:13).

The justifying grace that has saved us is a grace that also slowly but surely enables us to do the works that bring pleasure and glory to our Father. These works do not save, for that has been fully accomplished in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. But these works of ours, that the Father receives as if Christ has performed them, are the blessed evidence that we have been favored and forever changed by His redeeming mercy and love. Each day, as we depend upon the strength that He supplies through the Spirit, He establishes our works of love and service (Romans 8:4). We never serve Him in the strength of our flesh, but only in the power of His resurrection!

Take courage! The Father is at work in you today! He has bestowed His favor upon you, and is establishing the work of your feeble and tired hands! Your works of service, which are yet stained with sin, are fully accepted by Him in Christ! He will use you for His glory! He will enable you to serve Him with both zeal and faithfulness! And He will always be pleased with you as He views your life through the lens of Christ’s beauty and perfection!

    Saved by works indeed!

I love you all so dearly!

    Mike

    Sermon Preview:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

This Lord’s Day, we will bring our series of messages from the Epistle to the Hebrews to a close for now as we consider the words of Hebrews 12:28-29. In this section of his letter, the author reminds us of the fact that all who are in Christ have received an unshakable kingdom! In radiant contrast to all the shadowy symbols and signs of the Old Covenant, those who have received Christ and the fullness of the New Covenant are the beneficiaries of those eternal blessings that are to be found and experienced in the “heavenly“Jerusalem, the “city of the living God”!

On Sunday, we will probe deeply into the beauty and majesty of this immovable kingdom. I hope that you can take some time over the weekend to meditate upon the words of Hebrews 12:28-13:18 in preparation for our worship and our message from the Scriptures.

Perhaps the Most Important Sunday School Class in Our History

While I don’t want to be guilty of overusing superlatives, I truly believe that our new Adult Sunday School Class that begins this coming Sunday may well be the most important one we’ve ever offered.

Your Session wants to spend some time with you discussing the future of our Church in terms of our relationship to the PCA. As we have been telling you for some time now, we (the Churches of the PCA) are currently embroiled in a controversy over some of the critical doctrines of our faith, truths that we believe are essential and non-negotiable. Your Session is deeply concerned about the theological declension that has been occurring in the PCA for many years, and we want to speak to you very frankly about these matters.

In light of all of this, our Adult Class will focus on the topic of ‘The Fundamentals of the Faith.’ We will examine what these ‘fundamentals’ are, why they are essential, how they led to the formation of the PCA in 1973, and how our denomination has since drifted from them.

We believe it is essential that you join us for this eight-week class. We not only want you to be fully informed about these issues, but we also want to hear from you, and address your concerns and questions as well.

Below you’ll find the outline for our first class this Sunday. Please print it and bring it with you this Lord’s Day. We will meet at 9:30 AM in the Worship Center.

I love you all so much, and always rejoice with you and because of you!

    • How did the PCA arrive at its current place, theologically speaking?
    • What are the current theological issues/conditions/decisions in the PCA that concern the Session of CPC?
    • In light of the Session’s alarms about the current status of the PCA, what is the wisest course of action for the members of CPC to prayerfully consider? That is, how can we remain faithful to Christ our Lord and ‘the fundamentals of the faith,’ and “contend” for “the faith” as commanded by Scripture?

Introduction to the Challenge of Maintaining Doctrinal Fidelity

Examples from the early New Testament Church are in abundance:

The ‘doctrinal slide’ is always a grave threat in every generation. Things tend to fall apart:

There is always a need for doctrinal refinement and reformation, as well as on-going reformation in personal Christian devotion and behavior:

This reality, that of the persistent danger of doctrinal declension, comports with the warnings of Christ and the Apostles:

To stand faithfully against the powerful tides of theological drift, the Christian Church (and local Churches like ours) must embrace some doctrinal ‘non-negotiables’ that she is willing to fight and die for:

Ours is a generation of unprecedented doctrinal danger (given our technology particularly, and societal forces more generally):

Yet, it is a most exciting time to be a Christian and to seek to maintain a faithful New Testament Church and witness in the world:
