Month: June 2023

  • Announcements – June 30, 2023

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
Another of the unusual questions that Jesus raised during His earthly ministry is the one we find recorded in Matthew 9:4. Jesus asked, “Why do you think evil in your hearts?
The rather baffling nature of this question seems obvious enough.  Our Lord would appear to be suggesting that we think with our hearts rather than with our minds or our brains.  And besides this, there is the very solid implication that Jesus knows such evil thoughts that bounce around within each of us.  So in order to make sense of this, we will have to consider how the Scripture as a whole describes the relationship between our hearts and minds.
But the focus of the whole episode (see vv. 1-8) is squarely upon “Why” this is so.
Why do we all think such awful things at times? Why do even the strongest and most dedicated of the Lord’s servants have flashes of the vilest scenes in their minds, not to mention the presence of words, contemplated actions, and attitudes that would be most embarrassing if exposed to others?
This coming Lord’s Day, we will allow this probing question raised long ago by our Savior to rest upon our souls.  And, surely enough, we will be blessed in ways we cannot even imagine as we come under the life-giving influence of our Great Shepherd’s voice!
I love each of you so very much!!
    Mike

    Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
As we have been announcing, it is this Sunday that we welcome Dr. Steve and Rita Williams to our Church. They serve as our PCA missionaries to New Zealand, and Steve will be giving us a report on their work during our worship service.
You will also have a wonderful opportunity to meet them before worship from 10:00 to 10:30 AM in the Narthex. Let me invite you to come to our ‘Coffee With Our Missionaries’ and greet Steve and Rita and learn more about how you can pray for and support them.
Our sermon this Lord’s Day will be taken from Matthew 8:26 where we encounter another one of our Savior’s unusual questions.  The familiar setting for the question is found in verses 23-27. It is on the stormy Sea of Galilee that Jesus asked the disciples, “Why are you afraid?
I love you all and look forward eagerly to Sunday!

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

Have you ever gotten a little particle of dust, or some other kind of debris, stuck in your eye?  It happens to me virtually each time I mow our yard.  And it’s so aggravating, and painful!

There have been several occasions when I’ve had to summon Carol for her assistance in getting rid of it.  Sometimes you can’t even see it, but you know it’s there for sure!  On such occasions, I am thankful that my dear wife has a steady hand, a soft touch, and clear vision!  She has never even once come to assist me in my ophthalmological distress with a hammer and a screwdriver!  It takes patience, tenderness, and profound sensitivity to help someone in such a condition.

Well, Jesus our Lord spoke of this exact situation in Matthew 7:1-5.  And in the midst of His lesson on spiritual “eye” problems, He raised another of His unusual questions, and it’s aimed at all those who are His disciples:

Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?” (7:3).

Our message this Sunday will explore this convicting question.  Let’s pray fervently that we can ‘see’ why He raised it and what it teaches us!

Coffee With Our Missionaries Next Sunday!

Don’t forget that next Lord’s Day, June 25, we will have a coffee-fellowship with Rev. Steve and Rita Williams, our missionaries to New Zealand.  Please come and meet them at 10:00 AM in the Narthex!

I love you all so much!

    Mike

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
This coming Sunday, we will begin our summer preaching series on the subject of “The Unusual Questions that Jesus Asked.”
The four Gospels have left us with an impressive list of questions Jesus raised, both to His friends and to His foes, throughout His earthly sojourn.  A study of these questions will reveal much about our Savior, and even more about what Christian discipleship entails.
Our first message will come from Matthew 5:46 where our Lord asks His disciples, “Do not even the tax collectors do the same?”   As you get ready for worship this Lord’s Day, take a moment to examine the context of this question in verses 43-48.
    Some Items for Prayer
Let me mention three matters of prayer for you.
First is for our Vacation Bible School that begins this coming Monday, June 12.  Each day, from Monday through Thursday, our covenant children will gather to study God’s Word.  Please pray fervently for our teachers, helpers, and our little ones.
Next week is also the annual meeting of the PCA’s General Assembly (in Memphis this year).  Let us seek the Lord’s blessing and His clear leadership on behalf of the many commissioners who will come together to worship and conduct the sacred business of our denomination.  As you know, there are many critical decisions ahead for the PCA that will determine the course for our future. We need our Father’s wisdom and grace in order to remain faithful to Him and His Word.
Finally, on Sunday June 25, we will be honored to have Rev. Steve and Rita Williams with us in worship.  As you know, Steve and Rita serve as PCA missionaries to New Zealand. During our worship service, we will hear a report on their work and have a time of special prayer for them.   You will also have the opportunity to greet and speak with them before and after worship.  I would encourage you to come at 10:00 AM and meet them in the Narthex during our time of fellowship.
I love you all so very much, and I pray for you always,
    Mike

My Beloved Ones in Christ Jesus,

This coming Lord’s Day, we will look once again at the words of Jesus as recorded in Luke 12:1-7.  You will recall that in this episode, our Savior is teaching the disciples how they are to serve Him faithfully, especially in seasons of conflict and adversity.  We have identified three main lessons, the first two we considered last week:

Be very wary of phony, hypocritical spiritual leaders (vv. 1-3)

Make sure you fear the right person (vv. 4-5)

Rest in your Father’s great love and providential care (vv. 6-7)

In verses 6-7, Jesus provides us with two very simple illustrations of our Father’s care for us.  You can see that it involves “sparrows” and the “hairs” on our heads.

As we probe these words together on Sunday, we will discover the most wonderful things about the love, power, and wisdom of the One who has saved us by the blood of His Son.  And, oddly enough, we shall learn that one sure way to make our vision of our Father bigger is to consider the small things!

Before I go, I want to pass on a link to a very good post from one of our faithful PCA pastors, Rev. Nick Batzig.  Nick serves as the senior pastor of Church Creek PCA in Charleston, SC and is an associate editor for Ligonier Ministries.  I think you’ll be blessed by his words, especially as we enter the month of June (which, as you know, has been tragically turned into a month long celebration of the worst kind of human depravity).
