Month: August 2023

  • Announcements – August 25, 2023

My Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus,
Each week as we gather for worship before Our Lord, we focus upon His death for our sins.  In fact, the vicarious, atoning death of Jesus for sinners like us is the pervasive theme and motive of our worship, adoration, gratitude, and our service.
Like all of the great truths of the Gospel, this one is also subject to becoming less amazing over time as we are continually exposed to it.  Perhaps we could say that there is always the danger of our becoming desensitized to such Biblical doctrines.
This propensity that we all share, to become less amazed and impressed over time, is at the heart of the question that we will consider this Lord’s Day.  We will return to a very familiar scene; the betrayal and arrest of Jesus, which took place near the Mount of Olives in the Garden of Gethsemane.  We will examine this remarkable episode from the perspective set forth by the Apostle Matthew in Matthew 26:47-56.
The Lord’s question for our study is found in verse 53: “Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?”
As you prepare for Sunday, be sure to read the other Gospel accounts of this same event as recorded in Mark 14:43-52, Luke 22:47-51, and John 18:1-11.
I love you all with all my heart!
    Mike

My Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This coming Lord’s Day we will take our third and final look at Savior’s convicting question set forth in the words of Matthew 19:4. Our focus will be upon what this question says about human sexuality and marriage.
As we have observed previously, the question posed by our Lord that day takes us into the very heart of all that is under vigorous debate in our world today.  The claims of Jesus, recorded for us in these verses, address directly the most critical matters of all.  Here is God’s authoritative Word on human gender, the gift of sexual intimacy, and the Divine institution and glorious purpose for marriage.
I hope you will pray fervently for the proclamation of our Lord’s Word as we gather before Him this Sunday in worship and adoration.  Pray that the Holy Spirit will empower both the preaching and the hearing of the Word, and that we will have our minds renewed and our hearts reestablished in an ever deepening love for our King!
You are my joy, and I love you more than I could ever express,
    Mike

    Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
As we gather before our Lord this coming Sunday for worship, we will once again consider our Savior’s question that is recorded for us in Matthew 19:4
Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female?
So far we have discovered that in this question, initially aimed at the Pharisees, there is a word from Jesus . . .
on the written Word of God
    on creation
    on humanity
    on human sexuality
    on marriage
Obviously, this passage, and the words of our Savior set forth here, touches the very epicenter of the current controversy over human sexuality, gender, and the meaning of marriage.  And, as a consequence, it is essential that we understand the full depth of our Lord’s teaching.
This Lord’s Day, we will examine the final three of these subjects that are inherent in the unusual question that Jesus asked that day.
I love you all with all my heart,
    Mike

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I trust that, like me, you have been spiritually nourished and challenged by our Sunday morning study of the many interesting questions that our Lord raised during His earthly ministry.  As we have examined the many interrogatory sayings of our Savior, we have discovered that there is a depth to the ‘red letters’ in our Bibles that, just perhaps, we have not fully recognized before.
My suspicion is that we will again be pleasantly surprised this coming Lord’s Day we begin an investigation of the words recorded in Matthew 19:1-9.  Placed within the drama depicted by Matthew (yet another encounter between Jesus and the Pharisees) is nothing short of a bombshell question raised by Jesus.  Without sounding unnecessarily dramatic, this may well be the most fundamental, sweeping, and controversial question that Jesus ever asked. In fact, I might even suggest that this one question touches the most significant issue of our day, and exposes the very epicenter of the spiritual and moral inferno that is raging before our eyes.  I believe that what we will discover in Matthew 19:4 is so very relevant and fundamental that we will spend two weeks examining these simple, yet massively weighty words of the Savior.
Let me encourage you to do a little homework before Sunday and take time to get familiar with the episode found in Matthew 19:1-9.  Then, let’s all pray that the Spirit of God will empower and bless the preaching and hearing of our Lord’s Holy Word.
I love you all so very much, and I find my greatest delight in serving our Lord with you!
    Mike
